Softpelt couldn't believe that Fawnheart was gone.
Her best friend. The cat she'd worked tirelessly alongisde for so long was gone.
Softpelt's ears flattened against her head. Once again she was standing at that pool of water that reflected the night sky, StarClan glimmering above and making Softpelt swallow.
Was Fawnheart up there now too?
Knew the truth that Softpelt had hidden from her when she'd stepped down-
Softpelt splashed the water and turned away, sniffling as tears pricked her eyes.
"This wasn't what I wanted to happen." She whispered brokenly.
Was Fawnheart's life StarClan's punishment for not following their will?

Cursedheart had always enjoyed being on his own. He didn't like being bothered with everyone else, especially now when they were all weepy and distraught. The ginger tom had never been able to process his own emotions well, he was sure as hell that he couldn't handle his clanmate's emotions. It wasn't as if he didn't care that Fawnheart was gone, he was just as upset as everyone else. But as always, he swallowed those emotions and lashed out at those that tried to talk to him about it. All he knew for sure was that he needed to get out of the camp for a while.
He wasn't sure where he was going if he was honest with himself. Cursedheart was just aimlessly wandering around. He didn't mean to stumble upon Softpelt. In fact, he was about to turn on his paws and leave. But he twitched his ears at the words that fell from her lips.
"What are you talking about?" The fiery tabby asked gruffly, the question sounding more like a growl in his throat than anything else.
Softpelt jumped. "O-oh, I'm sorry I didn't realize anyone was around." She said nervously.
She laughed weakly. "I was just... wondering if... if maybe I shouldn't have stepped down," She said, the lie flowing once it came to her mind. "Poor Sakurapaw having to deal with the trauma of trying to save her dying mentor... If I'd still been apprentice I could've spared her that pain of having to watch Fawnheart die and feel helpless."
It was a sorry excuse for an excuse, as most cats had felt helpless anyways. Even Softpelt herself had felt helplessness and horror as she'd returned to camp to find her dear friend dead thanks to an adder bite.

Cursedheart had to fight the urge to roll his eyes. He had left the camp to get away from the weepy cats... now he had just run into one. But he couldn't walk away now. He may be brash but he wasn't rude. The ginger tabby flicked his ears as he lowered his head. He was certainly stuck now.
"Well... it's not like when you stepped down you knew this was going to happen right?" He grumbled, inching a bit closer to Softpelt before sitting down. "I mean... yea it sucks for Sakurapaw but I mean... if you really feel that badly why not help her? You know... get used to all of it."
Softpelt sighed, "No, no I didn't know this would happen." She admitted.
But she'd known it would likely displease StarClan and she couldn't help but wonder if this was the punishment...
But she pushed that aside she couldn't allow such thinking while in company. "I do intend to help Sakurapaw it's just..."
Her ears drooped. "Fawnheart was my best friend. She helped me return to SpringClan and I had many many moons working with her as her partner." Her whiskers twitched as she recalled how some of the medicine cats took to calling them a pair of mother hens with how they could be. "Losing her is a terrible blow and I just... I wish it had been different. I dunno, just... regret, I wish I'd had more time. Wish there was a way to save her. I know it's foolish to wish.... but I just do."
She wished if this was StarClan's punishment taht it had been her to suffer the consequences not Fawnheart.

The fiery tabby shifted his weight between his paws. Cursedheart couldn’t help but fidget. This was an uncomfortable situation, and he was never the best at comforting others. His bright orange eyes quickly glanced up at Softpelt before he started looking around at anything else. What was he even supposed to say to that? Was he supposed to say anything or was he supposed to let her keep talking?
“…Well… I mean… I guess that’s normal… to feel that way that is.” Cursedheart said quickly. “And… well I’m sorry you lost her… well that is I’m sorry you lost your best friend I mean you’re not the only… wait no… sorry.” The ginger tom quickly cleared his throat.
“In case you couldn’t tell… I really suck when it comes to this whole comfort thing…” He admitted sheepishly. “But… I get what you mean… about wishing things were different”
Softpelt shrugged. "I appreciate that you're trying." She assured Cursedheart, waving her tail dismissively. "You don't need to be good at it, sometimes just... a kind ear can be appreciated."
She frowned though when his words registered. "What do you wish could be different?" She asked. "Ah, if you don't mind my asking."
