For a kit who had been so eager to fight, Sagekit looked almost... frightened at the sudden playfulness of Moonkit. This was so entirely foreign to her, this idea of playing and being light-hearted and fun, that she was immediately on guard. Was there some alternative motive to this challenge? What if she looked stupid doing this? What if she didn't play right? Would she be outed for the youth-starved creature that she was?
Sagekit had no time to consider these terrifying thoughts, because Moonkit was jumping, pawing at her tail. His teeth connected with her back leg, not hard, but enough to startle her. She scampered a few feet away, dropping into a defensive crouch. When he came forward again, she tried to not overthink it, letting her instincts carry her into a low roll, pushing him away with her front paws.

Moonkit didn't seem to care, he was just excited to have a friend–though he wasn't sure he'd call Sagekit a friend necessarily–but with a laugh, he found himself pouncing once more, batting at Sagekit's shoulders as she rolled, pushing him off. A playful growl left his throat as he tried to tackle her once more.
"You'll never beat me!" he announced playfully, "I'm Moonstar, king of the...uh....city cats?" He had no idea what these cats played around as, but he could remember joking around with Evenie this way, pretending to be whatever kings and queens were in his father's stories.
Sagekit dodged his next tackle, feeling a faint boost in confidence as she did. His words, however, confused her. She hadn't spent much time around the other kits at all, nor did she grow up with siblings, so she'd assumed all they did was play fight. But he was... lying? "You're Moonkit," she pointed out, coming to a stop and looking at him in confusion.
"And I'm from the city, and there's no king where I'm from. Why are you lying?" Sagekit didn't seem upset, or concerned, just... utterly bewildered by his words.

Moonkit rolled his eyes. "Uh hello, have you ever played pretend?" he furrowed his brow. It wasn't like he was trying to be mean or anything. "–and my papa said there is! There's a group there, called....uh.....Pimal? Pimal something?" He wasn't sure, but he had heard the tom speak with the other cat...what was her name? Auntie Charlotte?
It didn't matter. "My papa said grampa used to be king of the city," he puffed out his chest. It was probably not accurate, but he didn't know better. They were just stories to him anyway. "Maybe one day I'll go back to the city and find the king myself! How did you get here from the city anyway?"
"P-pretend?" Sagekit asked, trying to understand the word in context. She'd never heard of Pimal whatever either... but maybe there were other cities. Her father had said as much. The memory of her father brought up a whole host of bad emotions, and she shook her head, apparently irked by his question.
"I walked, okay?" She said, ears flattening against her head. Her dad had walked with her, and then... then he had gone on alone, she supposed. As if she cared. "I don't know any cats in Pimal whatever. It was all solo cats in my city. I don't understand what pretend is. Lying? But play lying?"

He looked surprised. She had never heard of playing pretend? What kind of childhood did Sagekit have anyway? Weird. Not to mention, she was from the city...huh. "Maybe," he replied, though it was clear that he wasn't exactly sure what to believe, "did you walk with your dad? or mom? I came here with my papa...I think my sister was supposed to join us but she had to go away too."
His ears dropped slightly at the thought of Evenie elsewhere; he already missed her, even though she was always sick. He missed his dad too, and his mom even though he could barely remember what she looked like, having been so young when she left. Even Charlotte, who had been nice and told her plenty of stories.
His mood seemed to have dampened at that. He looked up to Sagekit again. "Yeah, I guess it's sort of like play lying," he replied, a little less enthusiastically than before, "you just...make a story, you know? Like the ones they tell us. Except they're not real and you can be anyone you want."
The question didn't make her quite as angry as it normally did- perhaps because she saw it coming. "I came with my dad," she said quickly glancing away. "And don't ask where he is now, because I don't know and I don't care. Good riddance." Thank the stars that Moonkit hadn't been here for her first few weeks, or he would've been a witness to the daily treks she had made to the border when she was still convinced that her father was coming back. Now she could pretend that she didn't care a wink.
Moonkit seemed a bit down, too, but Sagekit literally had no idea how to broach that topic, so she ignored it. "Play lying," she said, nodding after a minute. "Okay. I guess you're not a liar if you were just playing pretend. I'll be... captain of the loyal guard! Sageheart!" She sprang forward again, swatting at his feet in a burst of uncharacteristic playfulness.

He nodded. "Yeah, me too," he replied with a sigh, though he didn't seem to share the same sentiment as Sagekit did. He missed his sister. He missed his family. Of course, NightClan was nice too, and his new family seemed cool, but it just didn't feel the same. His papa told him to give it some time; he'd adjust like everyone else, but right now, it certainly didn't feel like it.
Still, Sagekit seemed less grumpy, and Moonkit's mood quickly shifted away from the longing and back into the kit-like playfulness. "That means we can go on a mission," he announced, "first mission is....uh.....climbing onto that rock there!" He pointed towards the rock leading to Aspenstar's den, "come on!"
Sagekit couldn't sense the same bitterness in him- more than anything, he just seemed sad- and she knew that he wouldn't be someone she could truly talk to about it. Not that she was open enough to even do that in the first place, but someone who didn't understand the fury that burned through her stomach wouldn't make a good confidant.
Whatever. She could still try this thing called playing, right? "I'll beat you to the top!" She called in response, bounding off towards the rock that led to the den. Sagekit started her scramble up the rock, needle-sharp claws finding purchase in the surface as she moved up the slope. She was quick, even if she was still clumsy, and she made short work of the rock. "Mission complete," Sagekit said, tail flicking in excitement.

Huh, Sagekit was fast. Perhaps he had been distracted, but he had barely realized that the other kit was already halfway up the rock before he started catching up, his strategy to leap from one protruding step to another rather than scramble up with his claws. It didn't matter, Sagekit's determination seemed to push her towards the top a couple of steps ahead of him.
"Okay, you win," he pouted as he moved towards the edge of the rock, his bright eyes widening. "Wow, look!" he pointed out, "you can see everything in camp from here!"
The thrill of winning, of beating Moonkit in the race, was so intense that she was distracted from the view for a minute by her desire to gloat. However, the tom-kit's redirection to the view mollified her, and she glanced out over the vista with bright eyes.
"I'll live up here when I'm captain of the loyal guard," she said, whiskers twitching. "And everyone will have to climb up here if they want to speak to me."

Amusement showed on Moonkit's face. "Oh really?" he purred, "not if I become captain of the loyal guard first!" As competitive as Sagekit was, Moonkit also had his own aspirations, and despite the other kit winning this race, he was undeterred from his own thoughts of becoming the best warrior NightClan had ever seen. It was his destiny! He was going to make his papa proud, even if Bermondsey wasn't here to see it anymore.
"You'll only be captain of the loyal guard first if I pass away," Sagekit said, suddenly determined to never be outdone in such a fashion. If this scraggly little kit could beat her in something as large as a title like that, what use was she to this clan? There was nobody she wanted to make proud, nobody she wanted approval from- rather, she wanted to force everyone to admit that she was valuable, that she was useful and strong and the best in Nightclan. "So good luck with that."

He rolled his eyes. Sagekit really took everything way too seriously. "Yeah yeah," he replied dismissively, "that's what they all say until I actually do it...so...." He gave the other kit a shrug. "Let's just say...may the best warrior win," he replied mischievously, before pawing at her tail again. Sagekit was just so easy to rile up. Moonkit almost found it fun.
"That's me. The best warrior is going to be me," Sagekit declared in a fierce tone, though the aggression wasn't exactly directed at Moonkit. It was more of a general proclamation than any sort of attack on her companion. "Sorry, but you won't even stand a chance." Suddenly tired of all this bragging and fighting and rock climbing, she flicked her tail.
"I'm going to take a nap," she declared, descending from the rock in quick, nimble bounds, landing on her feet at the bottom. "See ya around, Moonboy."

He snorted. "As if you would," he sneered back, "miss act-so-tough-but-I'd-never-survive-outside." Sagekit was the most confusing cat Moonkit had ever met. He didn't understand a single thing about that girl. With a roll of his eyes, he followed suite, descending down the rocks in a much more graceful way than his own ascension, taking one quick jump after another.
