Sagekit was Nightclan's newest, and angriest, addition. Until now.
She should've been happy that another cat had been brought in. It would take the attention off her, off her embarrassing abandonment issues, off her being forced to sleep in a den with the babies when she was nearly old enough to be an apprentice. Still, Sagekit was an in a worse mood than usual today, and this new kit waltzing into the nursery and being asked to choose a nest to sleep in just set her off.
The rusty tabby she-kit scrambled to her feet, jerked out of her nap by the newcomer. "You can take anything on the other side of the den," she announced loudly, though he had not even looked in her direction yet. "Everything around me is off-limits." The annoyance in her honey-colored eyes was apparent, and she looked ready to fight, even though she was undersized and rather scrawny.

Yeesh, who spat in her breakfast? Moonkit raised a brow at the other angry little feline, glancing left, to all the other dens, before glancing back to her with a skeptical expression on his face. More often than not, he'd be polite, friendly, whatever others needed him to be, but it seemed like there was no getting around this one. She looked angry, even before he had done anything. What the hell was this cat's problem?
"–and who are you?" he frowned, looking merely confused, "I literally don't even know you. Not like I wanted to sleep near you anyway." A scoff left his mouth. What an entitled little brat, he thought. As if he wanted her snoring in his ear in the first place!
"Good! Then don't!" Sagekit said, stalking out of the den with no further pomp and circumstance.
Rosethorn looked over from where she was laying with Foxkit, who was fast asleep beside her. "That's Sagekit," she said, offering Moonkit a faint smile. "She's new, like you." The older feline knew what it was like to be new to this clan, and how difficult that could be. Still, it was hard to make excuses for Maia-Sagekit, now- when she was so antagonistic. "I've had to resist the urge to box her ears a few times. She's all bark and no bite, you'll learn to ignore her. I'm Rosethorn- you are?"

Moonkit rolled his eyes. Seriously, what was her problem? At Rosethorn's explanation, he looked up, his amber eyes both curious and skeptical. Was that her mother? If so, he couldn't possibly rant about how her kit was an ungrateful brat, could he? He shook his head slowly. "I'm sure she just had a bad day," he lied, keeping his own irritation at bay. Whatever, it wasn't like he'd see her much anyway; hopefully they'd just ignore each other and be on their merry way.
"My name's Ale–I mean, Moonkit," he spoke, almost letting his former name slip in. Right. He wasn't Aleksy anymore. Moonkit. That was what they had decided to call him when they first brought him back to camp. "I just arrived a few days ago...so...I'm not really sure about anything. I think someone mentioned a tour or something but I don't really know, it might take them a few days to you know, get everyting sorted, right?"
"No, she's like that most of the time. I've tried befriending her, and my son, Foxkit-" she nodded down at the sleeping orange cat- "has tried. She only joined a week or two ago, though she's been here for longer. It's a hard adjustment for her. I think she misses her father. She could be a little less abrasive, though." Rosethorn let out a shrug and a sigh, before smiling again at Moonkit.
"It's nice to meet you Moonkit. Welcome to Nightclan. I was new once too, so I know how confusing it can be. I'll bet Aspenstar is finding someone to take you on a tour."
That someone turned out to be Sagekit. Aspenstar had reminded her to play nice, and while it was probably a ploy on the leader's part to get her to make friends, she did technically owe the older she-cat, so she acquiesced.
Moonkit was sitting outside the nursery when she found him the next day, and the glare she gave him could've withered flowers. "Get off your lazy butt, Moonboy. We're going on a grand tour."

"Moonboy?" the young kitten snorted at the nickname Sagekit had given him, "okay Sagegirl, if you have eyes, you'd see that I'm not actually sitting on my lazy butt." The young tom had been standing, his fluffy tail swishing back and forth evenly. He wasn't the kind to get riled up even if his–for lack of a better word–companion was being a total...well, whatever that insult his father called female dogs was.
"So where are we going?" he ignored her bristly tone, "you're supposed to show me around, right?"
Sagekit ignored that stuff about him not sitting. It didn't really matter. She set off at a slow pace, feeling the dirt beneath her feet and once again missing the city. She had to clean herself so often out here. "Yeah, a tour of the camp. Like I said. Technically babies like you aren't supposed to leave camp. I get to train with Aspenstar twice a week though. Until I'm promoted to an apprentice."
Nevermind that they seemed to be around the exact same age, though Sagekit's malnutrition had left her growth slightly stunted. She wasn't a baby like the rest of them. "We just came from the nursery. That's the apprentice den, and the warrior's den, and the leader's den, and the elder's den, and the medicine healer whoever's den. There's the rock where we go if Aspenstar makes an announcement. That's where we go to 'make dirt', which is what they call it around here." The she-kit was tempted to end the tour there, but she could see Aspenstar watching from across the camp and was reminded of the admonition to 'play nice'.
"Do you have any questions, Moonboy?" she asked, turning back to him, half a degree less snippy than before.

"From what I remember, you still have a kit in your name too, so you're just as much a baby as I am," Moonkit pointed out, sounding bored of her already as he followed along. The whole rule about not leaving camp didn't seem to matter to him; he wasn't from here anyway, it wasn't like he was one of those other kits, born and raised in the comfort of some cute little den or whatever. A pang ached in his heart; he did miss his father at the end of the day, though the cat was probably long gone. It was safer here but that didn't mean anything to the young kitten.
His ears flicked as his even gaze traveled around, from the apprentice den to the warriors den and the other places. There was no way he was going to remember all of that, but hey, he had an idea of where things were at least. Oh, and at least he knew where to go pee. That was important.
"Uh yeah," he shrugged, "why in the world are there so many dens anyway? Why don't cats just...you know, sleep wherever they want?"
"You're free to think whatever you want. I'm no baby." Sagekit motioned towards the fresh kill pile. "I'm surprised you're weaned, but if you get hungry you can take food from there. Though I did get yelled at for taking too much." That was hardly her fault- she had been so hungry, and that elder who'd chastised her had been completely out of line.
His question was one she'd also asked. "Hell if I know," Sagekit said with a shrug. "If I were in charge, I'd let everyone sleep wherever. But when you stay you agree to follow these rules, no matter how dumb they are. We start training when we're six moons, and then we move up through the dens until we're warriors. If a softie like you can make it through warrior training, that is."

He rolled his eyes. "Sure," he replied disbelievingly. She was his age; if he was a baby, she certainly was. He had been eating normal food for moons now; it was nothing new. He wasn't some useless ball of fur anymore. He felt an ache in his chest. After all, if he wasn't useless, why did his father leave him here? He still didn't quite understand; the excitement and curiosity and assurance he had felt was starting to fade into...well, he wouldn't know. He had never felt this way before.
"You know, you talk a lot for someone who hasn't proved themselves yet either," he pointed out with a frown, "it's not like you've fought off a badger on your own or anything. I bet you couldn't survive out there in the wild for one night."
"Yeah, no duh I can't. I haven't even started my official training," Sagekit said with an eye roll. Did he think if she had the ability to survive outside this clan that she would still be here? "I'm just saying I have the most potential, and once I'm done kicking butt during training I'll be the best warrior in the entire clan. Better than you, better than Phantomfox, better than Aspenstar."
She had to be. If she was even slightly subpar... well, then she wouldn't have earned the right to be here. And she would not stay on charity. Sagekit was no one to be pitied. "Want to fight? I bet I could beat you now."

Moonkit laughed. "Well I've been out there before," he replied smugly. He hadn't survived a whole night on his own, per se. At the time, his father had been around–even if he wasn't in the den–and he had his cousin too. Still, this snarky kit was being annoying, and Moonkit wasn't going to let the opportunity pass to rein her in. "You've got some catching up to do before you get to that level; you're not even an apprentice yet."
Crouching down and lashing his tail, the kitten's bright eyes sparkled in mischief. "Come on then," he smirked, "I'll even let you get the first move."
Finally, an opportunity to let out some of this aggression. Sagekit sank into a crouch as well, her sharp amber eyes surveying her opponent. Aspenstar had taught her the basic stance, along with the hunting one, but they hadn't gotten to moves yet. Surely it wouldn't be that difficult, right?
Unfortunately, her urge to fight, to claw something, to prove herself, made her clumsy and overeager. Sagekit sprang forward, swiping very obviously at Moonkit's front legs.

As much as Moonkit talked big, he hadn't really learned to fight...yet. He was half expecting the other kit to be aggressive, to kick his butt, but when she landed a little too early and misjudged her jump, he couldn't help it. A laugh left his mouth as he took a step back, before swiping at her ear almost half-heartedly. It was clear he didn't see her as a threat.
"Should I let you try that again?" he teased, "I feel like it didn't go the way it was supposed to."
Sagekit’s ears flattened against her head, embarrassment and hurt flashing into her gaze before she could stop it. As soon as she realized that she had been bested and that her shame was showing, she shut it down, back to fury. “Screw you,” she snapped, tail lashing as she stepped away. “I’m still twice the cat you’ll ever be.”
With that parting phrase she turned on her heel, slipping back to the nursery in order to mask the angry stinging in the corner of her eyes.

Oh okay. He did not expect the other kit to get so upset over that. A frown appeared on Moonkit's face as Sagekit immediately turned tail. He opened his mouth, before closing it. Should he apologize? Should he say something to make it better? He had no idea; she didn't seem to want to hear it from him anyway.
Despite his own misgivings, he found himself trotting up to her still. "Hey, look, I didn't mean you weren't good," he spoke, excuses rolling off his tongue, "you just missed a little! Come on, I'm sure I'd be an even worse fighter than you!" He didn't mean it at all, but he hated the thought of other cats having a reason to hate him, after all.
Deep down, Sagekit knew she was being unreasonable. She knew that no one expected her to be a seasoned fighter at five moons old, and that Moonkit had probably just laughed at the silliness of a kit fight rather than directly at her. That knowledge caused her to stop, turning to him briefly, opening her mouth to say something before stopping.
But what was she supposed to say?
Hey, sorry about that, it's just that my dad abandoned me and I feel like everything is my fault, like maybe I'm not good enough. I have to prove myself, I have to be the best. If I'm not the best, I feel inadequate, and then my abandonment issues resurface. My anger is a reflex, a defense mechanism against letting myself feel the pain that's simmering in my bones.
Absolutely not. That was embarrassing. Besides, she could tell that he didn't mean the words he said, and that doubled her anger. "Listen here, Moonkit," she said, stepping closer, amber eyes alight with a visceral anger. "Don't ever lie to me. I can handle whatever you think of me. If you hate me, if you think I suck at fighting, fine. But lying is the one thing I won't ever stand again. Now please, please, leave me alone."

Yeesh, what was this kit's problem? A scowl appeared on the tom's face as he gave her a look over. "You're literally the most confusing cat I've ever met in my life," he snorted, "first you say you want to fight, and then you're backing down from it, and after you said you were going to be better than I ever will be...like seriously, what do you want from me?" He couldn't understand this other cat's train of thought; nothing really made sense with Sagekit anyway. All Moonkit really wanted to do was just get to know the place and maybe find a couple of other kits his age to play around with, at least for now. He wasn't obsessed with fighting or being angry or whatever Sagekit was.
He knew she wanted to be left alone but Moonkit was nothing if not persistent. "If you don't try again you're never going to get good at fighting," he pointed out.
"Good thing I'm not your pet project to understand. I don't want anything from you," she snapped. In truth, Sagekit didn't want to be understood. That meant vulnerability and owning up to the fact that she wasn't like the other kits. There had been no carefree childhood for her, no desire to play and frolic and befriend. She wanted that, but she didn't know how to relate to these clan cats.
"So what? You want to fight again?" She asked, faltering slightly in her confusion at his second comment. "You'll just laugh at me."

Despite all his supposed 'wisdom' from having lived much of his early kithood outside of the clan, he was still a kit, after all. A lash of his tail and the bright look in his eyes reflected his youth as he crouched down, as if ready to pounce, though in just as clumsy a way as any other kit. "You never know if you never try," he crowed. After all, he missed playing with another kit. After Evenie had gotten sick, three had turned to two and his father had gotten even more quiet, even more sullen than he already was, mumbling words of a curse that followed him for generations.
Sagekit was nothing like his sister, who even in her worst days, always seemed bright and kind and happy, but hey, any kit would do. With a playful growl, he jumped towards her, pawing at her tail and giving her back leg a nip.
