Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The pile of bodies was only growing larger. In the last two weeks alone, there had been multiple found and not found. The father of the apprentice, Sunrisekit, Duskveil, Maplevow. The list was growing large, larger than she could ever have imagined. She felt profoundly powerless about it; where the first death she had seen had made her deeply depressed, the latest string of disappearances and deaths took her agency away. How was she supposed to protect her clan if all she could do was sit back and watch them die.
The leader let out a sigh. She needed to get out of her head. If she didn't, Aspenstar was fully aware that it would send her spiralling into probably the third panic attack of the week. She wasn't interested in that, which meant she had to go do something, anything. All of her duties for the day had been done, her interviews complete, her tasks checked off the list, which meant that for the rest of the evening, she really needed to find something to do... but what? She thought about this as she stood by the entrance, debating if she should take another warrior along for the ride.
Larkspur didn't have any idea she'd been thrown into leadership in a clan that was destined to be cursed. The new deputy was stressed as well, feeling as though she was powerless to help keep the clan protected. She had recently taken out Mantisopera in attempts to gather more herbs for Cana's den, the fear of something terrible happening eating at her from the back of her mind. Every time she went into camp, she found herself counting warriors in hopes that everyone would be there as they were the night before. Since Maplevow's disappearance, she'd luckily seen all cats safe and accounted for.
In a very rushed decision, one that wouldn't have made sense before, Larkspur found herself padding to Aspenstar's den. She found comfort with her leader, and she was sure that the other cat wouldn't want to be alone. Not at a time like this. She knew there were logistics they'd need to speak on later-- such as the buddy system implementation, and no one younger than warriors going further than a certain point. Larkspur had been thinking about this over and over in her head, and it was slowly driving her insane.
When she reaches Aspenstar's den she finds herself almost nose to nose with her and she takes a startled step back, blushing under her fur. "Sorry Aspen, I didn't mean to run into you. Well, almost run into you. I was hoping to find you." She blinks, taking a breath to compose herself. She was still getting her feelings calmed to a point that when taken by surprise, she didn't fall into a blundering idiotic mess. "I was wondering if you'd like to come out with me for a bit? I'm not sure where yet exactly, but somewhere that isn't the inside of the caves."
Aspenstar was slightly surprised that Larkspur was the first person that she had interacted with; this had happened before, hadn't it? A faint splash of dejavu flicked across her gaze, although she shrugged off the apology. "No harm, no foul, right?"
She glanced over to her deputy with a faint smile. Part of her felt badly for the fact that Larkspur was being thrown into the thick of things, but as soon as she started to think about it, she realized that she, too, had been thrown right in. Aspenstar had survived, so so would Larkspur, right? She gave the other cat a once over. It seemed that she was in a similar physical state as the pale fawn colored she-cat: tired, stressed, half looking like she crawled out of a dumpster. If cats could have bags under their eyes, the duos would probably be rich and violet.
When Larkspur explained what she had come to her den for, Aspen's eyes lit up in amusement. "Is that a date?" she meowed in a tease, oblivious enough to her deputy's feelings that she didn't realize how close to home that was. Amusement glittered in her mismatched gaze at her own joke, before she offered a nod. "I've got nothing on my plate tonight," she then meowed, motioning for Larkspur to take the lead. "Tonight I'm all yours."
Larkspur gives a slight smile at Aspenstar's words, grateful the she-cat wasn't irritated or frustrated by getting nearly run over. That would be the last thing the clan needed, the deputy and leader out of commission due to an accidental concussion.
The black she-cat wasn't taking care of herself nearly as much as she should have, which was evident in the care of her fur. Usually, Larkspur was well put together, her long fur clean, without tangles, but for now it was disheveled, some areas sticking into crazy directions. She looked tired, and as though she'd aged moons. Once this was all taken care of, she'd go back to the bright eyed, bushy tailed deputy, but for now, the clan came before her self-care.
"I don't know, would you like it to be?" She challenges with a grin, unsure where the ease came from, considering for the most part she didn't have any of that aspect under control. "Let's go." The blue-eyed she-cat purrs, stepping from the leader's den and beginning through camp. She had no idea where they could go, so she just started walking. Although this was supposed to be a relaxing evening, there was no doubt she was still on edge, every little sound in the brush pricking her ears.
"What if I said I did?" she asked, although it was probably unclear whether or not she was teasing her deputy or not. Truthfully, it was a pretty even fifty-fifty split. Half of her was saying it in jest, the other part genuinely would have accepted the offer of a date from her. This was for two reasons. One, Larkspur was pretty and absolutely lovely in most ways. Two, Larkspur had made the mistake of being nice to her once, which was apparently Aspen's trigger to potentially acquire feelings she didn't want to. That's what had happened with Phantomfox. At least Larkspur didn't have a mate and a kid. Either way, though, Aspenstar had diverted the the ball right back into the black cat's corner.
She followed alongside her deputy as they walked, although she was at least half-convinced that there was no particular destination in mind. That was fine by her; she was more than willing to just do something that wasn't directly involved with the sudden destruction that was befalling her clan. Not that that was ever too far from her mind, but Aspenstar's therapist had suggested that she get out of her head sometimes. The destruction would be there after their walk, right?
"How have you been holding up?" she asked as they walked. "I'm sorry I haven't asked sooner, but I'm sure this has been a pretty god awful time for you to come into things, mm?"
"Then I suppose we'd just have to make it a date then." Her tail waves back and forth lazily as she jokes with her leader, though part of her was serious. Larkspur didn't understand where her feelings had come from, or why, but she figured acting on them would help considerably with her awkwardness around her leader when it came to matters outside of clan necessity.
Larkspur found herself headed towards the multi-falls. While yes, that was the most stereotypical place she could've taken anyone on a date, Larkspur also found it the easiest place to clear her mind. The falls were serene and the vegetation was soft underfoot; it was easy to forget troubles for a moment while looking over the running water. When the duo reaches their destination, she settles into a comfortable sitting position on a bed of moss.
Her blue eyes fixate on Aspenstar, a million thoughts running through her mind. Eventually she looks back to the falls. She sighs softly with a laugh. "Honestly, I'm more scared than anything." Larkspur finally admits. "I look around the camp and I find myself wondering who's next? And I can't shake that feeling." She frowns. "You don't have to apologize, Aspenstar. I couldn't imagine having to lead right now. I know you're new to leadership as well, and it hasn't been easy so far." She wasn't just saying this to be kind, she knew the last few months had been difficult for the clan. It felt that they couldn't catch a break. "Are you holding up?" she brings her gaze back to Aspenstar, gentle and concerned.
Aspenstar tilted her head for a moment, her whiskers twitching slightly in amusement. She wasn't sure how she had expected the she-cat to respond, but she wasn't sure that that had been her expectation. Leave it to the black cat to surprise her; very few did. "Then I guess it's a date," she confirmed with a wink, trying to lighten the mood as much as possible. The mood had been so heavy lately. It would be nice to, at least at some point that night, relax just a little bit, pretend the world wasn't caving in.
"So, this is where you think a lady wants to go on a date?" she meowd with a grin. "And you even found a soft spot to sit where we can watch the water. How romantic," she swooned teasingly, settling down next to her perhaps a little closer than she should have. Her interactions with Larkspur were always easy, and that was something she took for granted sometimes. Letting out a sigh, she turned her attention to the she-cat's more serious words.
Aspenstar's smile dropped and she let out another sigh. "I understand," she meowed with a tilt of her head. "I pray to StarClan each morning that I do not find another body at dusk." She shook her head slightly, as if trying to shake away a thought. "It won't go on forever, though. It can't." The words were surprisingly resolute; somehow, someway, NightClan would be okay.
After a moment, she blinked. "I appreciate your kind words. It's hard to cut myself some slack sometimes," she admitted with a shrug. It always had been. "It's been... hard, again, I think." She looked away from the deputy for the first time, her gaze settling into the distance. "It feels like things are out of control. Like there's nothing I can do to prevent us from plummetting..." She paused for a moment, her shoulders slumping slightly. "I know things have to get better, but what if they don't get better soon?"
"Oh, I'm sure this is where a lady would want to go on a date. That is, if you're calling yourself a lady." She teases Aspenstar, hoping the other cat knew she thought she was as ladylike as ever. "Only the best for m'lady." She grins, enjoying the close proximity between the two. Having someone else there was a comfort. The last few weeks had been filled to the brim with anxiety, having a friend to carry the weight would make this easier.
"Me too." her blue gaze saddens and softens. "I'm worried about the apprentices and the kittens. I'm sure this is a scary time for them too." She tilts her head in thought, before glancing over at Aspenstar. "You're rarely wrong." Larkspur meows. "So I hope you're right." Again, her gaze finds the water that rushes quickly through the falls, down into the river.
"You have me. We'll figure this out together." She says firmly, as though she believed it. Truthfully, she didn't know how much of the words she'd spoken that she believed, but she genuinely felt they would be okay with Aspenstar's leadership. Gently, the she-cat noses Aspenstar's shoulder. "You're not alone."
