Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Applekit had sat on the outside of the Medicine Den since they had gotten Melonkit back into camp and settled in his new nest. It had been days now. The first night, she was forced to go into the nursery to sleep. After that night, though, the others seemed to understand that it was her duty, no her responsibility to her brother, not to leave where he was being nursed back to health. As such, the tiny, nearly apprentice-aged kitten sat like a statue, although a tired statue. She hadn't spoken to anyone but her brother except for when she explained what had happened to their father. It was all her fault... Melonkit would probably never walk again, and it was all her fault.

A small calico kitten pushed her way through a few older apprentices crowding the way, casting them an annoyed look. They paid her little attention and went back to their game. She turned and spotted her sister sitting outside of the medicine cat looking worse for wear. She had yet to see her brother since he'd been hurt and shooed at every attempt. Applekit looked like she desperately needed some words of encouragement and a meal. She snagged a mouse from the fresh-kill pile and ran over to her. Setting it down in the dirt she plopped down next to her sister and leaned into her side a bit "You should eat something," Plumkiy announced, watching her with worry in her big amber eyes.
Applekit looked over to her sister, although she didn't say anything at first. It was hard to say anything, especially to her other litter mates. Did they know how at fault she was? She and that stupid other kitten... They never should have chased him up there... After a moment, the kitten blinked. "I'm not hungry," she meowed, although the words were barely audible. She hadn't eaten much of anything since Melonkit had arrived in the den, and she really wasn't planning to. She didn't deserve a meal, not after basically killing her brother.

"If you don't eat you won't be able to take care of melonkit, yknow." She had heard several versions of what happened from spying on various conversations throughout the camp. The only consistency in the stories was melonkits injury and that Applekit was there. She didn't know what happened but obviously her sister was extremely shaken up. "Eat, for melonkit, even if you arent hungry. We can share if you can't finish it." She nudged the mouse closer to her sister, hoping to entice her into at least a few bites if nothing else.
Applekit sighed slightly. Plumkit was probably right - if she wasted away completely, no one would be there for Melonkit that knew exactly what happened. She could still hear his scream of her name when he fell... She blinked away those thoughts, before glancing to her sister. "You're right..." she meowed, although her tone was definitely more defeatest than not defeatest. She took a bite, surprised at how much her mouth was watering. Suppose that was normal, though, wasn't it? "Have they been talking about it?" she asked, looking for the first time in days at her other clanmates. Did they all hate her?

Plumkit was a little surprised by how shaken up her sister was but she didn't say anything about it. The she-kit shook her head and followed Applekit's gaze. "There's been some talk, of course, but not a lot. Mostly everyone just wants Melonkit to get better. Including us. He'll be okay, Firetooth will do everything she can. Trust Melonkit, he's not going to give up easily." She reached over and gave her sister's ear a few comforting licks. She would be lying if she said she wasn't curious, Plumkit wanted to know what happened just as much as everyone else. Looking at the other kit's state though there was a piece of her that was afraid to ask, like maybe that would cause Applekit to fall apart completely.
Applekit blinked a few times. Although her sister's words provided her some comfort, it still wasn't enough. She wasn't sure that anything would ever be enough. They were about to be promoted soon, and Melonkit probably wouldn't walk again, and it was all just too much for her. She took another bite, tears welling in her eyes. "We shouldn't have chased him," she murmured, looking at the ground. "If we didn't chase him, he wouldn't have fallen." While this was true, of course the kitten couldn't possibly only blame herself, right? Not only was she not the only cat there, but Melonkit had been the one who ran up it himself. There were so many things the three of them could have done differently. "He's never going to walk again and it's going to be because we took the game too seriously. How do you live with something like that?"

Ah. That's what had her sister so down. It was more than just the accident and more than just witnessing it - she actually genuinely believed that it was her fault. "You just do. It's not your fault Applekit, I don't blame you. I doubt that Melonkit does either. That accident could have happened to anyone. Did you push him out of the tree wanting him to get hurt? No. It was a freak accident. There's nothing we can do but live with what happened. We just need to be here for Melonkit, even after we get promoted, okay?" She bumped the she-kit's shoulder with her nose gently. Nothing she said or did could truly make her sister feel better but she hoped that maybe with time she would come around and realize it was not her fault. It was nobody's fault.
She shifted uncomfortably, still unable to make eye contact with her sister. Despite Limekit's kindness, she couldn't quite bring herself to accept that it really had been an accident. She wasn't sure that she'd even be able to accept it if it came out of Melonkit's mouth himself, although she was quite sure her brother probably hated her and Jetkit. "Do you think Dad does, though?" It was a strange question. Applekit had been the reason that Peachblush and Pastelchaos got into a fight that left them not talking for days because she told her dad that Pastel had taken most of the litter on a dangerous trek to the precipice of a cliff. Turns out, Melonkit had been in far more danger just with Applekit than he had ever been with Pastelchaos. She then looked up slightly. "I don't know how to be there for him," she meowed quietly after a moment. "I've been outside the medicine den more than I haven't, but that doesn't make up for anything...."

"I don't think Dad blames you and I don't think he gets to decide, especially when he wasn't there. I think you just being present is being there for him. He needs you now more than ever and you're here. Have you talked to Melonkit to see how he feels about everything?" That would be the obvious solution, right? Plumkit wasn't entirely sure but it felt right to her, whatever that counted for. The kit wasn't exactly a guru and she could only hope that she was giving good advice and not screwing everything up.
