Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Aspenstar blinked the sleep out of her eyes. She hadn't meant to doze off while waiting for the tom, but she supposed it wasn't surprising. Her sleeping schedule had been... irregular at best these days. At least she woke back up before the tom showed up, right? Still, she probably wasn't going to be able to fully wake hersef up before he came. That was an unfortunate reality, but a reality all the same. She let out a sigh, before scanning the side of the river. Wolfriot would show up any moment now, and she would take her night to get to know him a little better. His name had come up in the consideration for Loyal Guard, and as the Guard was composed of her closest confidants, she figured that she'd probably need to get to know the tom before making a final decision, right?
He bounded out of the shadows, bright eyed and bushy tailed. It was hard for the large, lanky tom not to be excited, though part of him was worried that Puddlepaw might have said something about their little adventure that would have upset the apprentice's mentor, that mentor being his Clan leader. It was only because Aspenstar had been away that he had taken the young tom out for a hunt.
Sending his pale amber gaze casting around the clearing, Wolfriot spotted the she-cat settled down in the grass, seeming to be comfortable in waiting on him. Hoping he wasn't too late, the large grey and white tabby trotted over, giving a dip of his head in a greeting. "Aspenstar," he rumbled, sending a small half-smile in her direction.
"Wolfriot," she greeted with a sleepy nod, a half smile of her own on her face. "I hear you were taking good care of my apprentice?" Puddlepaw had reported that the two had gone out together during her time with Larkspur and the SwiftClan leader. It had sort of surprised her; it wasn't often that normal warriors volunteered to do training sessions. "I appreciate that," she continued with a nod of her head. "I haven't had as much time with them as I would have liked to recently. It always impresses me when warriors are willing to pick up the slack." Her voice was earnest, and for just a moment, her half smile became a full smile, before falling again from her face.
The leader's mismatched eyes studied him closely. The two had not really had a chance to interact much yet, outside of the normal leader-warrior interactions of sending cats on patrol or assigning duties. "How have your other duties been lately? With all of the changes lately, I've been curious if things have been divided fairly?"
Wolfriot couldn't help but bask in his leaders praise, raising his chin slightly and soaking up her words. It wasn't every day he got complimented by a pretty she-cat, let alone be the she-cat was his Clan leader. Looking down to meet her eyes, he was unfocused for a moment, trying to gathering his thoughts. "Puddlepaw was fun to work him-work with," he got out, shaking his head for a moment to clear the fog. "It was fun, I enjoy training the young ones. Makes me feel like I'm doing more to give back to the Clan when I pass on what I know."
At her last question, a small frown appeared on his maw, his eyes narrowing slightly as he thought about his answer. But when he did answer, it was truthful. "I'm a good warrior, I'm able to adapt and do what I'm told. Change isn't foreign to me. All I want is to serve my Clan, and it's leader," he rumbled, turning his amber eyes back to her mismatched ones. "Though if it is ever something I disagree with, I will let my opinion be know."
Aspenstar was pleased with his answer, although he probably wouldn't know it, as not a single muscle in her face changed. "He's a sweet kid, and he tries hard," she meowed with a shrug. She could see him slowly growing into quite the warrior, although the doubtful little tom probably didn't think so himself. She then blinked. "Training is one of my favorite parts of the job," she then agreed, her gaze moving from the tom for a moment. "Something about passing on the knowledge that has been passed on for generations, mm?"
She then shifted, considering his response to her question. "The duty of the warrior is to question things when he feels it is necessary. Any good warrior resists the temptation to adhere to rules that are questionable, even when following those rules would be easier." Her guard did that more often than not; they moved as an independent unit that was fully willing to give the she-cat their full, unaltered opinions. It was part of the reason that she trusted that they would have her back; if they were willing to tell her up front, the chance that they went behind her back was small. Thinking about all of this, she tilted her head to the side, pondering.
After a moment, the leader let out a long sigh. "I might as well ask: are you aware of why you are here? I genuinely don't know how specific Phantomfox's instructions about our meeting were when he gave them to you, and I'd rather not beat around the bush if you know. If not, well, it's your lucky day, and I'll let you know what you've won," she meowed with a smirk at the end.
Thoughts of Puddlepaw flashed through Wolfriot's mind once more, his lips twitching up into a smile. Training a young cat to hunt and protect their Clan has to be one of the most rewarding things ever - even if it wasn't his responsibility. It almost made him want kits someday, little warriors of his own to love and shape.
At the lower tone of her voice, Aspenstar's stern words had sent his ears turning back, the frown on his lips reappearing. But Wolfriot understood what she said, though he would never know the burdens a leader would bear. He was a warrior through and through, following orders was in his blood, but he knew when to voice his opinion or not. It was whether he thought he would be heard that made his decide to speak or not.
The tabby tom remembered the swift order from the Captain of the Guard, having slightly been taken aback with his task to meet with the leader. At first he had been nervous, hoping that his taking out of Puddlepaw hadn't been an issue. Now he wasn't so sure of why he was here. "Uh..." he stammered out, shuffling his large paws nervously. Her smirk sent even more unease through him, the tip of his tail twitching.
The lleader let out a sigh. "Of course he didn't," she muttered to herself. She wasn't quiet about her occassional frustrations with her best friend. The interest in her eyes didn't change though, and her expression became relatively neutral.
"There's no reason to not come right out with it, then," she meowed with a blink of her dual-toned eyes. Her gaze was locked on him, watching every movement, taking in every change of emotion. Even when she was focused on a task at hand, Aspenstar was ever the observer. "With recent changes in leadership," she started, referring to her newly promoted deputy, "my Guard is running a bit short handed. I have two openings, and so far, I have three felines that have most captured my attention as felines who would be qualified for the role. You, Wolfriot, are one of them." Saying nothing more, the leader paused to let the tom react to the news.
[ before i develop an infatuation, and even then, is she plotted? ]
Wolfriot stared at his leader for a moment, slack jawed and eyes wide. Sure, being a part of the guard was something he had dreamed about, but he never thought it was going to be a possibility with all the more experienced warriors. Blinking rapidly, he shook his head and gave Aspenstar a slight nod. "I appreciate the opportunity, it's an honor to even be considered," he rumbled, though delight curled in his belly. Hopefully I don't mess whatever this is up, he though with a small twitch of his ears, raising his honey eyes back up to the she-cat. There was a small sparkle of a challenge in his eyes; Wolfriot was up for whatever she threw at him.
[ ok there's a running joke that everyone is in love with aspen (currently there are at least 3) bc everyone accidentally develops an infatuation with her LOLL she's my baby. to answer the actual question tho, it's kinda complicated. she's polyam, has ~*tension*~ with about everyone she's not related to LOLL so you can take that as you want ? she's got a complex web of relations, and he's more than welcome to join it, but she's not a 1 guy 1 gal kinda girl bc she's secretly a 1920s free love promoter ]
Aspenstar nodded at his response. "I am sure you will not make me regret considering you," she meowed with a flick of her ear and a half-smile. Although she was constantly saying lines like that, the small leader was more bark than bite. This wasn't to say that the leader was soft; Aspenstar was more than willing to take care of business, and she had an entire guard to assist her if she herself didn't want to get her paws dirty. Well, by guard she meant Phantomfox. He'd do any actual dirty work, while the others would run the errands she simply did not want to run. Amused by her own thought process, the leader's tail tip flicked back and forth.
"We have several things that we can do to test your aptitudes and allow me to get to know you better. I'll allow you to select whichever you think you will succeed best in. You can choose between physical, diplomatic and strategic challenges. These are both critical skills for the guard to have, and I'm curious about your baseline aptitudes." She then paused, letting out a slight chuckle. "I promise, once we get through all of this formal mumbo jumbo, I won't be so serious. This is just an unfortunate part of the job."
[ i love this. i can have fun with this. be prepared to be wooed at some point. also if there any any diplomatic things i need to know? i'm still trying to get up to date on everyhthing lol. i haven't been up on anything since the wiki site. also if youre a reader, he kinda a cassian from the court of thorns and roses series ]
At her comment his smile stretched full, canines flashing in the dim light. Wolfriot stretched up to his full height, silver tabby fur gleaming in the moonlight. His broad shoulders flexed, wide paws curling their claws into the ground. His tail arched over his back, the fur pluming like a large feather. "I'm up for anything," he promised, dipping his head back to her level. Despite the dip of his jaws, his honey eyes stayed level with her, sparking with excitement.
[ im excited LOL will do ! tbh im just as behind as anyone on diplomatic stuff so aspen is just genuinely oblivious most of the time LOL can't get into fights if you just ignore them ! ]
"I hope so," she mewed with a nod. When he stood to his full height, the leader nodded slightly to herself. He was certainly large enough to be of genuine value to her, which certainly was a start. She flicked her tail to signal he should follow her, before the small she-cat quickly took off without another word. Her speed was quick; not quite a run, but perhaps a light jog. Time was of the essence...
When Aspenstar slowed, the duo was at the triple waterfall, one of the most dangerous points in the territory. A large shape loomed on top of the highest fall, and Aspenstar let out a soft hmm. She had doubted that Larkspur would have enough time to set the course up all the way, but she was pleasantly surprised that her deputy did. "Here we are," she meowed with a nod. The moonlight made her pale furs look even lighter, almost ghastly. There was was an ephemeral beauty to the leader in the moonlight; her father once told her that that was how he knew that one day she would lead: she looked as if she belonged in the night.
"As I explained, you have three options." Her tail flicked back and forth. "They are as follows."
"If you believe that you will excel best in a physical challenge," the leader started, "your challenge is to fight me. Although this may seem like the easiest task," she took a moment to theatrically look down at herself, "remember that I was top of my class. There isn't a warrior in this clan that can best me; only a loyal guard member would be able to give me a run for my money." She smirked, before continuing.
"Your diplomatic challenge will be simple; you will have to de-escalate a situation using your best diplomacy." Although that didn't give him much detail on anything in particular, Aspenstar wasn't sure what else she could say about that one.
"And finally, the strategic test is the hardest, although I will give you extra points if you have the audacity to take it." She hoped he'd take her bait, but if she was Wolfriot, she might avoid her last option (no matter how much Aspen thought it was the most entertaining option). "If you look up the triple falls, you will see there is something on the edge. Your job will be to retrieve it for me without using the path to the top. You'll have to strategize the best way up, and the best way back down."
She let out another yawn before blinking. "The choice is yours."
[ if you've read the court of thorns and roses series, hes a total cassian btw, if not, that means hes a super loyal, headstrong jock that likes to let loose but is one of the most powerful when needed ]
As he kept pace beside her, Wolfriot nodded along as Aspenstar spoke. Each obstacle that she proposed seemed to be something that he could easily manage, except for the last one. As they came closer and closer to the falls, Wolfriot's steps faltered. He looked up the sheer, ragged face through narrowed eyes, his brow furrowed.
"So to prove myself, I just have to make it to that top of that?" the grey tabby asked with a flick of his tail, not taking his honey colored eyes from the top. "Do I need to retrieve anything, or just shout your name from the precipice?"
She nodded, her mismatched eyes shinining at the idea that this was the one he was going to pick. She could appreciate that he was willing to take on a challenge, especially one like this, where if he made one small mistep he could find himself in a world of struggle.
"I promise you that there is at least one path up the front of the falls that will get you to the top. I ensured that this would work earlier this evening, just to make sure I wasn't asking you to do the impossible, or sending you to your certain death. Your job will be to find that path across the ledges."
She then nodded again. "There is a small object at the top of the precipice. It is approximately the shape of a kitten. This activity seeks to simulate a search and rescue. You will need to retrieve for me the kitten sized object for your mission to be successful."
Rolling back onto his haunches, Wolfriot looked up the face of the waterfall, his honey eyes narrowed as he tried to find all the viable paths. Rocks jutted out at many different angles; some were covered in moss and lichen, other rocks were loose and seeming only to hang off to the face of the cliffs by the roots of the small plants growing on them. Nervousness flooded over the tom, but he kept his exterior steady as Aspenstar spoke, not wanting to let her know he was unsure.
"I think I know which way to go," he said in a husky voice, not tearing his gaze away from the rock face. Without another word, the grey tabby shot forward and climbed onto a boulder next to the rock wall and began his ascent.
Aspenstar nodded at him, before finding herself in a seated position as she watched. So far, so good; he seemed to be carefully considering the ways in which his weight would be impacted by the various steps. This showed that he could think quick on his paws, something that she definitely needed if he was to join her guard.
So far, he seemed to be doing alright. Wolfriot avoided the moss covered patches, knowing they would be slick, and tested his weight on any loose-looking stones before he put his full weight on them. He made the mistake of grabbing hold of a loose root, feeling it crumble and pull away from the cliff-face. With a snarl, he scrambled up before it pulled free, finding himself on a ledge about halfway up the cliff. The spray from the waterfall glistened on his pelt, alerting the tom how close he had come to the sheet of rushing water.
Had she misjudged the task that she had given to him? It was true that she couldn't guess quite how he would react to the conditions, but had she actually put him in more danger than she had thought? Watching him stumble, she found herself racing to the cliffside, ready to jump up if she needed to. "Hey, you don't have to keep going!" she called, completely unsure if the tom would take her offer or push through. "Don't get yourself killed over a silly task of mine, okay?"
Looking down at his leader, he flashed her a cocky smile and called down, "What are you talking about? I'm having the time of my life! Don't look away or you might miss me making it to the top!" Water glittered off of his fur, the sun shining and creating a halo of light around his silhouette. With a flash of a snarl, Wolfriot launched himself upward once more. After a moment of climbing, he felt the lip of the cliff. With a yowl of triumph, he hauled himself over the edge and stood atop the cliff, chest heaving as he fought for breath.
