Bluekit's prize possession bounced away from her over the thin skin of frost that had formed on top of the snow overnight, the carefully-formed moss-ball standing out starkly against the white canvas. And Bluekit gave chase with all of the enthusiasm of a kitten young and naive enough that her only purpose in life was to have as much fun as possible before the very idea of responsibility occurred to her, scrambling over the hardened snow with her paws splayed to offset the slipperiness of the frost. "C'mere, mossy," she enticed as her ball rolled beyond her reach, her bound turning into a leap, and that leap ending unceremoniously with her caving in the hardened shell of the frost and, with a distressed yelp as the cold cut through her fur, ending up in a tangle of short limbs in a snowy crater. Her flailing paw just barely managed to clip her moss-ball as she fell, succeeding only in sending it flying towards the nearest clanmate.

Bindingkit was watching some birds that were flitting around some treetops. It intrigued him that they could move about so easily in the air. He found himself wishing he could fly like they could. As he was intently looking upward, he was suddenly struck on the back of his head which exploded apart upon impact. "HEY!" he mewed loudly as he spun around to see who and what hit him. Pieces of moss littered the snow at his paws but he couldn't see the perpetrator. "Alright! Who threw this at me?"
Bluekit's feet flailed in the air like an upturned bug as she struggled to extract herself from the snow, too intent on her situation to notice what Blindingkit was accusing her of. When she finally managed to scramble back to her feet, she found herself presented with the sight of her favorite toy scattered into pieces on the ground. "Oh no!" she said in dismay, seemingly oblivious to the scraps of moss stuck to Blindingkit's head, which could have told her the whole story had she been more observant, as she turned her wide golden gaze upon him. "What happened? I was only stuck for a minute!"

After watching her extract herself from her predicament, Bindingkit asked, "You did this to me?" He moved closer to Bluekit but the snow was getting deeper the further he went so he slowed down his pace, stopping still a good distance away from her. He shook himself causing the rest of the moss scraps to spray on the snow. "Why?"
Bluekit gasped as yet more pieces of Mossy were rained down upon the snow. "I didn't do anything," she insisted. "I was just chasing after mossy, and then I fell over, and now it's all broken." She finally managed to extricate herself from the pile of snow, scrambling up to be level with Blindingkit. "How did it all end up on your head?"

"You threw it there!" Bindingkit huffed. Then as is common with the youthful mind, all was forgiven and the incident was replaced with an idea. "You know we can make another moss ball from a nest in the nursery and play with it!" He was in the mood for playing and was finished thinking about birds for now.
Bluekit was about to protest that she hadn't thrown anything, but that thought was whisked away as quickly as Blindingkit's mood. "Oh, that's a good idea!" she enthused, her tumble in the snow all but forgotten. "I just got a bunch of new moss in my nest, we could use some of that," she said, evidently having also forgotten that that new moss had been intended to replace the moss she had spent making her moss ball in the first place. Playtime was more important than sleep, anyway.

"That's great!" Bindingkit meowed. "Race ya there!" He took off running but didn't take into account their race track - snow! As he ran he felt as if he was running in slow motion. The snow was slippery for sure but his biggest problem was it's depth. Instead of being able to run straight out, he had to take big leaps that slowed his pace down considerably. Either running or leaping, he was determined to win.
"No fair, you didn't give a warning," she complained, but quickly left that worry behind as she bounded for the nursery, leaving behind miniature craters in the snow as she bunny-hopped her way level with Blindingkit. They were neck and neck, until a particularly stubborn patch of snow right before the nursery caused Bluekit to tumble head over heels for the second time that morning, although this time it played to her advantage as the extra momentum sent her careening straight into the side of nursery - ahead of Blindingkit. "Aha!" she said, scrambling to return to her feet and puffing out her chest as if the move had been intentional. "I win! Slowpoke!"

A frown creased his face. That's not supposed to happen! I'm destined to be a hero and heroes never lose. "I, uh, let you win," he said, in an attempt to save face. But maybe being a hero doesn't necessarily mean he'd win at everything, he thought as he walked into the den. Just maybe the important stuff.
A quick look around inside told him they were the only ones there. "Good," he mewed. "No one's here to scold us for taking moss. Which nest is yours?" He vaguely knew where Bluekit slept, somewhere on the other side of the nursery from his nest.
"It's this one," said Bluekit, who was lucky that there were no stray tails around for her to tread on as she somehow managed to step on everybody else's nest as she lead the way to hers. She presented proudly, with a dramatic swish of her tail, a small nest comprised mostly of older dried-out moss with a conspicuous patch of new green moss tacked on to the edge where a chunk had clearly been taken out earlier. "See, I have all this nice new moss here," she said. "I bet it'll be even bouncier than the one I made with the old stuff."

"You're right," Bindingkit mewed. "Fresh stuff is always better." He had tried one time to make a moss ball out of old bedding some apprentices dropped when cleaning the nursery. It was a disaster. "Once I tried to make one outta old stuff. It was all dry and crackly and wouldn't hold together."
(Your new avatar is great! I love the Aristocats!)
"Oh, yeah. You know, that's probably why mossy fell apart so easily," said Bluekit thoughtfully. She unceremoniously clawed a chunk of the new moss out of her nest, leaving behind an ugly crater with a few scraps of the new moss clinging for dear life to the edges of the old bedding. "This one'll be nice and strong!"
thank you! i also love it but every time i look at it my brain goes "doot doot doot" in time to her shaking her butt and it's mildly distracting. also i'm sorry for the amount of times i've used the word crater in this thread

"Yeah, that looks like it'll hold up good." Bindingkit eyed the hole Bluekit had made in her nest and then looked over toward his nest on the other side of the den. His had plenty of moss. He surely could spare a piece or two to help out his new friend. "Wait here." In a flash he ran over to his nest and took some moss out. His wasn't as fresh as Bluekit's moss but it wasn't ready to be thrown out yet either. He pushed the rest of the moss back together to cover the spot he had made. "Here put this in the hole you made. I want you to be comfortable tonight."

"Oh, thanks," purred Bluekit. "Last time I just curled up really tight until the apprentices brought me some new moss, it wasn't so bad. This'll be nicer though." Abandoning her moss ball project just long to roughly shove Blindingkit's moss into the hole she had created in her own nest, she returning to squishing the springy new moss in between her paw and the floor of the nursery, rolling it back and forth a few times to create a sphere. "Here! This is gonna be a good one!" she proclaimed proudly, nudging it over to Blindingkit for approval.

"It sure is!" Bindingkit meowed as he held it up and inspected it. The ball was neatly packed and was the perfect size for playing. "You really make a good moss ball." He gave it a little toss straight up and caught it between his front paws. The thought had occurred to him to play inside with the ball but then he thought better of it. "Let's go outside and play with it. We don't want it getting lost in all this bedding moss lying around." He gave the moss ball back to Bluekit and turned to leave the den.
"Good idea, we wouldn't want it to end up being just another lump in someone's nest," she said, and happily trotted outside after Blindingkit. Fluffing her pelt up around her to fend off the cold as the meager warmth of the empty nursery faded, Bluekit allowed Blindingkit to gain a few steps on her before she dropped the ball to the ground and batted it towards him. "Catch!" she said as the toy went hurtling towards him.

The toss was a little high so Bindingkit had to leap to make the catch. He caught the moss ball in his mouth but as he landed, he slid into a snowbank. Completely buried, he turned around and looked out the entrance he made in the snowbank. "Ha! My own private den!" he laughed before tossing the moss ball out the doorway he made.

"You look really comfortable in there, maybe we should ship you off to WinterClan," Bluekit teased. "I bet you'd fit right in!" As the ball came sailing back over her head, she stretched up on her hind legs to catch it and ended up toppling over onto her back in a puff of snow. Undiscouraged, she punted it back in the vague direction of Blindingkit without getting up to look where she was firing.

"No way!" Bindingkit mewed as he came out of the pile. He shook snow from his fur as the moss ball came speeding back but not quite in his direction. "Watch out!" he called urgently but was too late. The errant ball of moss struck Redflame squarely on the back of her head. "HEY! Who threw that at me?" she meowed as she turned looking for the guilty culprit.
Not wanting Bluekit to get in trouble, Bindingkit stepped forward. "I did, I'm sorry. It was an accident."
Redflame knew full well that Bindingkit didn't throw the moss because it hadn't come from his direction. "Come on now," she mewed inwardly smiling to herself. "I know you didn't throw it. It came from over there." She turned and faced Bluekit.
