"I didn't throw it at you, I threw it at Blindingkit," Bluekit insisted, scrambling to her feet only to find herself immediately in trouble. "Or, well, I thought I was throwing it at Blindingkit, but I couldn't see very well because I fell over, because Blindingkit threw it waaaaay over my head and I had to stretch up really tall to get it but then I lost my balance. Sorry, Redflame," she said.

The young warrior smiled at the kit. "That's okay," she mewed good-naturedly. "No harm done. It just startled me a little." She tossed the moss ball back to Bluekit. "You two are going to be apprentices soon, aren't you?"
Truth be told, Bluekit hadn't given that much thought to her impending apprenticeship and was probably not as eager to be out of the nursery as most of her denmates were. Apprenticeship would be new and exciting, she supposed, but she rather enjoyed her responsibility-free existence as it was. "Oh, yeah, I guess we will," said Bluekit, a horrifying thought occurring to her as she caught the mossball again and turned to Bindingkit. "Do you think they'll let us bring our mossball when we move into the apprentice's den?!"

The thought of being an apprentice excited Bindingkit. He knew he was destined for greatness and this was just another step toward fulfilling his destiny. "I hope so," he replied a bit uncertainly. "It's so fun to play with."
"Well, I don't know about that," Redflame said with some concern in her voice. "What would the other apprentices think about you two playing kit games? Besides, you'll probably be way too busy to even play with it. You'll have to spend much of your time training hard to become warriors... or garden keepers if that's what you want."
"I'm gonna be a warrior, the best one ever!" Bindingkit announced proudly. He was going to be SummerClan's greatest hero one day.
Bluekit frowned. Too busy to play? She couldn't imagine such a thing. But apprentice duties would be fun in their own way, right?
"I'm gonna be a garden keeper," she announced proudly as Bindingkit declared his own intentions. "I can be the best garden keeper while you're being the best warrior!"

Bindingkit couldn't imagine why any cat would want to be a garden keeper. Being a heroic warrior is where all the fun would be. But he wouldn't put her down by the decision she made. Doing so wouldn't be what a hero would do. "Okay!" he mewed. "We can both be the best at what we do! But can I ask why you want to be a garden keeper instead of a warrior? It would be so much fun if we could train together."
"I know both of you will do fine with your training," Redflame meowed. "I have to go on patrol now. You two have fun with your moss ball." She waved her tail in farewell before walking over to meet the rest of her patrol.

"Bye, Redflame!" Bluekit said as the warrior left them to their own devices.
"It would be fun to train together," Bluekit agreed, rethinking her choice for a second - but only for a second. "But the garden keepers are important too! And I'd rather take care of the herbs than fight," she admitted. Playfighting with her denmates was fun, but she couldn't imagine actually baring her claws to inflict pain on another cat, even one from another clan. "And we'll still be able to patrol together! Besides, I'd only be the second best warrior while you're around," she said.

Bindingkit's already big ego was stoked even further by Bluekit's compliment. His face beamed with delight. "You really think they'll let us patrol together?" he asked eagerly. "That'll be too cool! Maybe when no one's looking we can sneak off and play moss ball. Toss it to me!" he ran a few steps away in readiness for the throw. One thing still puzzled him though. He just couldn't understand why any cat would want to spend their life tending to plants. When he play fought with the other kits he felt so alive and energized. How could any cat feel otherwise? Maybe someday he'd understand.
"Oh, yes!" Bluekit nodded, already imagining ways that she could sneak out and meet Bindingkit for their games - after she completed her apprentice duties, of course. "Maybe we can stash it somewhere in the forest," she said, tossing the mossball up in the air and batting it towards Bindingkit.

"Yeah, good idea," Bindingkit mewed as he stretched up to catch the ball of moss. It landed neatly between his two front paws. "An' if anyone sees us we could just tell 'em we're sharpening our skills." He batted the ball back to Bluekit by kicking it with one of his hind feet.
"Yeah, totally," said Bluekit, keeping a careful eye on the mossball as it hurtled towards her and leaping up to swat it back, landing on her paws with a satisfied smile as she successfully sent it back to Bindingkit. "We can say we're working on our reflexes. That's good for hunting, right?"

"From what I've heard, good reflexes are important for everything," Bindingkit mewed, "hunting and fighting." The mossball had landed short so he had to run up to get it. "Do you know if you'll be taught how to hunt?" He gave the piece of moss a swift kick back to Bluekit. He only had a vague conception of what garden keepers did and that in itself was probably wrong.
"I think so, at least a little bit," said Bluekit, although truth be told she didn't really know that much about it either. Figuring out exactly which of the adults did what job hadn't been high on her priority list. "But maybe not," she said uncertainly, and was deep in thought racking her brains for information about what a garden keeper actually did when the moss ball smacked her in the face. "Maybe it'll be better if I don't have to use my reflexes that much," she giggled.
