Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Orchiddrop smiled, drawn close to Crow again by the mention of their children. The rest of the afternoon was easy enough on the surface, though she wished she was able to be open with him again. When they returned to the nursery, back to their little swarm of children, Rosethorn glanced between the two of them, trying to deduce if anything had changed. Not seeing any significant shift, she sighed, and reached out, batting Firekit gently as he gnawed on her foot. "Why don't you tell the kits how mommy and daddy met?" She prompted, grinning down at her favorite nephew. "I'm sure they want to know how their parents fell in love."
Orchiddrop fought back the urge to give her sister a pointed look, since she knew the circumstances. But Cinderkit looked up at Crow eagerly, clearly wanting to hear the story.
Comforted by the knowledge that Orchiddrop was allowing herself a little more freedom, Crow trotted fractionally closer to her as they reentered camp, the barest hint of an amused grin fluttering across his face at Rosethorn's antics. It widened more at his son's determination, Firekit pouncing on one of his auntie's other paws, and then at Cinderkit's reverent hope. "You've been asking for the story again, little bird?" He nuzzled her affectionately in between her little gray ears, a fresh wave of love flooding through him. Orchiddrop wouldn't know of the many occasions he regaled the story of their romance to their starry-yed daughter as he usually took Cinderkit to one of the flower patches at the edge of camp, letting her lay among the daisies as she listened. "That's three days in a row now, but alright, I'll tell you again. Why don't you show mommy your story spot?" he encouraged gently, glancing up at the pretty white queen.
Crow was telling the story of them that frequently? Orchiddrop blinked in surprise, but smiled as Cinderkit bounded over to her, leading her out to her story spot in the flower patch. The other kits followed, settling themselves in disheveled rows as they looked expectantly at their parents.
Orchiddrop turned to Crow, her whiskers twitching. "Well, where do you usually start?" She asked. How much did he tell? How much should she tell? Did her kits ever need to know about Goldenshadow, or was that shame better left as a secret?
Following behind their procession across camp, he kept two of their sons in line, Firekit and Oceankit equally prone to distractions elsewhere. Once they were all comfortable, peppering the flower patch around their parents, Crow waved his tail to silence the chattering of the kittens before he addressed Orchiddrop. "First, I make sure everyone has their listening ears on." Mischievously, his muzzle was raised and his nose swept in a ticklish motion across her ear, grinning as she couldn't withhold giggles, then he drew himself back to scan the expectant pairs of eyes on him before he began.
"Once upon a time, there was a terrible fire that destroyed all it touched. Our young Crow found himself homeless, hopeless, and hungry, feeding only on the scraps left behind by more successful hunters. He knew nothing about the world or how to take care of himself, but still he carried on, despite the hunger in his belly that grew worse every time prey smelled the soot in his fur. He didn't know what was keeping him going until he met her," his eyes flittered to Orchiddrop, their depths swirling with the memory, "Orchidpaw, formerly Orchid. She was like the first ray of light you see when you wake up from a nightmare. She was newly apprenticed to this magical, fantasy clan called SummerClan, filled with cats that were filled with love and hope. Orchidpaw took pity on Crow and taught him the ways of a warrior so he could survive on his own. She saved him, and he owes her his life. But there was a hideous beast that wanted her all for himself, and he would stop at nothing until he got her. The beast tried all he could to separate Crow and Orchid until one day, overcome with madness, he cornered Crow. Crow was no match for a fight with someone like that...but Orchid was. She fought against the beast. She fought with the most powerful weapon there is: Love, and with love in her heart, she vanquished the beast and his hatred. She saved Crow again, and every day since he's known he is lucky to love her and for her to love him too."
He was sure Orchiddrop wouldn't see their story in the same light, but Crow did and that's what he wanted their children to see. Even if the events were altered for the sake of storytelling, had she ever asked him about that final night of Goldenshadow's reign of terror, he would insist that she was the true hero. Had it been just Crow battling Goldenshadow, it would have ended in a pathetic, easy loss; but the sight of her had empowered him, filled him with the strength of their love that he'd seen in her eyes. Orchiddrop had saved him, and it was only due to her that he even had a lick of skill to hold his own in the fight.
"Woah!" piped Firekit, gazing up at his mother who he saw in a new light. She was so powerful! "Mom is so strong and cool! I wanna be just like you, Momma!" He flailed his paws around in mock strikes at the air, imagining he was as strong a warrior as her.
Orchiddrop listened to the way Crow spoke to their children, softening as she heard their giggles. He was a natural at parenting, more fun and bright than her own gentle and protective style. The story he told was one she agreed with- to a point. But it would not do to tell her children how their mother had turned coward, had abandoned their father when she found out she was pregnant. So she let them believe the version of the story that painted her in a better light.
She leaned down, nosing Firekit's forehead gently. "You'll be far cooler than me- all of you will be. No matter what you do in life. And your father is not doing himself justice- he has fought plenty of his own beasts, and Orchid would not have survived her fight with the beast without his love." Even if she had been physically removed from him, the memories had kept her alive through those horrible months.
"Oceankit, you're named after the place where your father and I fell in love- a beautiful, glowing ocean. One day we'll take you there."
Firekit tilted his chin to press the crown of his head closer against his mother's gentle touch, a purr resonating throughout his lean frame. "I'll be the best," he insisted with a snooty look at the rest of his siblings, Crownedkit and Drizzlekit in particular. Their brothers were among the most competitive of the bunch, always striving harder and moving faster, and he wanted to outdo them, too.
Crow had stretched himself out sometime during his storytelling, and Cinderkit was cradled against him with a forepaw curled around her, no shortage of love to be found in how he tended to her ruffled pelt. "One day," he agreed, "when the little fireflies come back to the shore. When you're all older, we can take you to all the places your mother and I visited."
His remark was met with a chorus of cheers from the litter, all expressing their eagerness in their own unique ways.
