Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Wispycloud prodded the Red Guard's shoulder gently. It was midday but also a well established naptime for most cats. Of course, not all SummerClan citizens were lucky enough to take a nap while the sun was still out, and today Wispycloud and now Asher were among the unfortunate few.
"I found something... strange on my patrol. I didn't want to bother Ratstar or Dawnmemories with it, so I figured a good place to start would be you," She explained when she saw light reflect off his eyes, "Would you mind coming to take a look?"
Asher couldn't help but groan, especially after he was prodded awake. She even said his name wrong to make it worse. Of all of the Red Guard, you had to choose me, huh? My poor nap...it has to be something important, right? Blinking his tiredness away, he sat up and looked at who it was that woke him up. He let out a brief yawn as he rose to his paws. "Sure thing, BUT," he said, holding up a paw, "My name is Asher, not 'Aster'". That one letter difference made all the more annoying. "Anyway, what's up?"
"Oh right. Sorry about that," Wispycloud's ears flicked back when he corrected her for miss-saying the Red Guard's name. She almost asked Are you sure? because she'd only ever heard anyone call him Aster. Perhaps it was the Mandela Effect? After a few seconds of further pondering this she realized she was two seconds away from a full on tangent and there was a more pressing matter at hand.
"There's this... thing. It doesn't seem dangerous but I've never seen anything like it," The gray she-cat explained as she lead Asher toward the South Sea. It was a chilly day but Wispycloud didn't feel the cold one bit, her WinterClan ancestry was serving her well. In leaf-bare her pelt thickened up significantly and she looked soft and fluffy as a cloud, "Big and round, like a rock but light as air and bright as the sky. I can't make heads or tails of it."
"Hmm...I think I may have an idea of what you may be referring to," he spoke his thoughts aloud, a bad habit of his. If it was what he thought it was, when he was a kitty pet, the smaller twolegs would play outside with it often. He didn't understand the way they talked but their behavior showed they enjoyed it alot and got sad whenever it went missing. There was once a time when he played with it himself, but he didn't get nearly the same enjoyment they did, but it had its moments.
"When did you first notice it," he asked as he followed behind the she-cat.
"This morning I was on a hunting patrol with Alabastercharm and he pointed it out to me," Wispycloud explained as the sea came into sight. She looked up and down the shoreline for a few moments before seeing her target, a red-and-white beach ball, laying a few fox-lengths away from where she last saw it in the sand, "It's moved! Do you think it's alive? Or maybe it's like a leaf, but instead of falling from a tree, it fell from the sky."
She approached the ball nervously; tail almost between her legs, fur bristled, she was ready to take off at any moment, "Do you think I should touch it?" She whispered to Asher as she put her paw in position to do just that.
The tom couldn't help but chuckle at the question. So it was what he thought it was. "It's not alive but maybe the wind moved it. If I remember right, they're not heavy at all, even a kit could move it by themselves." As he got closer, he began to circle it. Nothing seemed to be strange about it, it was just like all the other balls the twolegs played with. "Feel free to touch it," he confirmed, "But don't unsheathe your claws or else it will pop."
"Wait, you've seen this before? Where?" Wispycloud hadn't really thought of it before, but Asher didn't have a Clan name. That was a strong indicator that the Red Guard member was not born in SummerClan. She wanted to ask him about his history but felt that it wasn't very polite to do, so the unspoken question remained in her eyes only. She turned her attention back to the beach ball. That's right. This enemy needed dealt with, that's why they were here.
Emboldened by Asher's confidence, Wispycloud gently put her paw against the beach ball. The second she touched it, it rolled away from her. The sudden movement caused her to let out a squeak and leap back... and right into Asher's side with enough force to knock him over should he not have anticipated it.
There wasn't anything for them to be worried about so he sat down and started to groom himself. "Yeah, in the past b-," he started to say in between licks, before he found himself tumbling over. "Hey, what was that for?!" he exclaimed, wincing as a dull pain throbbed in his side. He wasn't angry at all but more so caught off-guard by what happened. He slowly sat up and gave the she-cat an incredulous look. "Did it scare you," he asked with a light chuckle.
Wispycloud's fluffy gray pelt was like a magnet for debris; if you can find it on a beach, you'd find it in her pelt. Twigs, rocks, shells.. What was moments ago was a poised and proper she-cat now looked like an unruly rogue. After gathering her bearings she backed away from Asher and immediately began grooming her chest. It didn't take a genius to see that she was extremely embarrassed, "What do you think!?" She snapped between strokes, not meeting Asher's eye or even glancing at the beach ball, "It moves to fast for something so large! Are you sure it's safe?!" Wispycloud wasn't really scared of it anymore, but she'd pretend, it was easier than explained the real reason why she was suddenly so flustered.
"Of course I'm sure!" he retorted, "Would you like for me to show how harmless it is?" Wanting to prove his doubter wrong, he got up and approached the ball. With a bored look, he sat down, facing Wispycloud, and batted it toward her. As expected it went airborne and floated toward the she-cat. "See? Nothing bad happened, so you can stop being such a scaredy-cat."
Wispycloud let out a squeak of alarm and every single tuft of fur on her body stood on end. She was half SummerClan, sure, but also half WinterClan, and her present state really showed off the renowned fluff of her mountainous ancestors. On reflex she batted at the strange orb with all of her claws unsheathed and then backed away, careful not to stumble over Asher this time.
"Don't-- Don't do that!" She huffed as the ball quietly hissed, whatever air was left in it slowly releasing due to her savage attack. Wispycloud forced her fur flat for the second time, licked her chest for the second time and, embarrassed by her actions once again, looked away, "I think I killed it..."
Asher let out a sigh and shook his head as he watched the beach ball deflate. "You had to go and ruin the fun, didn't you? Of course you killed it, Wispycloud, you put a hole in it and all the air came out." Walking over to the corpse of the ball and prodded it before turning back toward the she-cat. "Oh well. I guess its time to go back now."
"Air...? Are you telling me there was a cloud in that thing!?" Wispycloud wasn't a dumb she-cat, but she was really struggling with the concept of what a beach ball was. Regardless, pretty much the moment that she expressed her confusion, she felt color rush to her cheeks and somehow just knew that this question made her look about as educated as a kit, "Actually, nevermind. Let's bury its body and then we may as well go on a proper patrol since we've already come out this far."
The tom sighed deeply. Asher came from a different background but he figured clan cats would have known something about at least some twoleg things like a beach ball. But, seeing her realize that her embarrassment was somewhat pleasing to see. Maybe he would have to share more of his kitty-pet knowledge with his clanmates so they're better informed.
"You caused it's death, you're responsible for it's burial. I'll wait for you over there." he said as he got up and moved closer to where the woods met the sand.
Wispycloud sort of wanted Asher to take the lead here, ya know, since he was the beach ball expert and all. Plus she wasn't exactly keen on touching it since last time it did it hissed and exploded. That being said, she was sure it was dead and Asher had confirmed it, so it wasn't like it was going to air up again and attack a second time. After a couple moments of hesitation, she hurriedly dug a hole and then buried the corpse of the twoleg relic.
"OK it's done," She said solemnly as she approached Asher, "I wonder just what kind of purpose it was supposed to serve... Hunting practice, perhaps? Sort of like moss balls for kits but... bigger..."
Asher shrugged. "Well, they can't do anything with that one now that you killed it," he said jokingly. "But I think I saw the smaller twolegs play with it few times outsides. I don't know what else they use it for." Turning toward the forest, he looked over his shoulder with an annoyed look. "Are you ready to go yet?" He still couldn't believe she dragged him all the way out here just to watch her pop a beach ball. He shook his head. Well, it wasn't all that bad; he wasn't doing anything anyways.
"I didn't mean to kill it! How was I supposed to know it was so weak that a single scratch would end its life? Not even a mouse or a fish is so easy to kill..." Wispycloud got defensive right away. One, she was still kind of embarrassed and Asher seemed to be rubbing it in and two, she thought Asher was kind of cute and hated that it was him of all cats to see her littler failure. The gray she-cat was usually so collected, too, she was really off her game, "... I don't understand how any kit, twoleg or feline, could be expected to play with a toy that is so fragile!"
He glanced back toward Wispycloud. It was rather amusing seeing her flustered like that, especially since he was only giving her a hard time. "Who knows why anyone does anything. Was there anything else you wanted to show me while were already out?" he asked Wispycloud. Although he may not have sounded like it, he didn't mind being with her.
"No... nothing notable. I just need to finish the rest of my patrol cross the League border and then we can go back to camp. It's been quiet lately so I am sure it won't take long. In fact, you can go on back without me if you want," Wispycloud didn't want him to leave but she was still embarrassed and perceived that she was likely annoying him, "Thanks for your help..."
Asher shook his head. "What kind of Red Guard would I be if I let you go off on your own? If anything, I can finish what you started and you can go on and head back to camp." he offered without any real hesitation. Realizing he taking his job a little too seriously, he shrugged. "I mean, we're already out so why not just finish out the patrol?"
