As the cobwebs were cut away, it revealed just how bad of a shape she was truely in. Without the extra passing of the cobwebs wound around her side, each rib clearly outlined covered by only a thing layer of taunt fur, her hip bone jutting upwards above the deep dip between the two bones. She had already been thin and sickly before the siege, the lack of food and herbs only making her condition worsen as her litter of kits took what little nutrients she had stored up for themselves when they suckled. It was going to take a long and difficult road to recovery and that was before Foretooth’s discovery. The queen winced, claws digging into the nest as he pressed along the scar that was weeping fluid but the stitches had held. Any touch in this area hurt, but her kits suckling constantly she had grown more used to the pain. Still the firm paws pressing was much worse than the pressure from the kits causeingnher to squeak slightly when he reached her womb where the kits had been pulled from.
Jetfire didn’t protest though, letting out the breathe she didn’t know she was holding when he was done and laying her head into the nest. Honestly the bandages had needed changed long ago, but with so many injured cats from the battle the newer cobwebs had gone to those bleeding out and on the verge of dying. The wound would need to be cleaned well in order prevent infection “No poppy seeds...” she murmmered “They are bad for the kits...” Bloodystar and Mountainsound had insisited that she stop taking anything for pain before being allowed to nurse them
Grumpykit snarled as the apprentice came near him, snapping to his paws and arching his back. "Don't touch me," he spat. Though Firetooth dismissed him, he didn't take his squinty eyes off of Freckledpaw.
Ghostcrown shuffled his paws as Firetooth began his examination and he was overwhelmed with relief to have another task to attend to.He wrapped up the dirty cobwebs into a ball and hurried out of the den with them.
Freckledpaw brushed off her mentors words, but cuaght glimpse of the smile that tugged at his lips, he was strange. Her eyes flickered back to Grumpykit as he lashed out at her for being so close and she stared at him for a moment, daring even to lean in a little despite his unwillingness to be near her. At least now she had an idea of what the squinty kits behaviour was like, that was on questioned answered but there were still so many left. "What a strange family." She muttered under her breath before tearing her gaze away from the little grump and rejoining Firetooth at Jetfires side. The apprentice followed his instructions and brought him the things he had requested, but she stopped when Jetfire told him she wouldnt take the poppy seeds. Her ginger freckled ears twitched as her paw hovered over the seeds and she looked at her mentor. "Are they bad for nursing kits?" She had no idea, it was one of the many things she was still learning after all.
"Thank you, Freckledpaw," Firetooth meowed when his apprentice brought the herbs; all of them exactly as he requested, which was impressive considering how much she had to immediately memorize. He finished chewing up the burdock leaves and gumweed, lightly spreading the paste along the length of the wound with his paw. It would sting a little, but would ultimately help seal the stitches together and speed up the healing process. Then, he carefully began wrapping the clean cobwebs around Jetfire's abdomen, tight enough to keep dirt out, but not too tight that it restricted movement or breathing. The Medicine Cat only paused in his bandaging when he overheard his apprentice and patient arguing over poppy seeds. "They're not usually recommended for nursing Queens, especially early on," he admitted. "But the kits are in the middle of weaning already, so there isn't much of a risk to them anymore. It should be fine, but if she insists, give her the borage seeds to help her provide enough milk, and fetch her some chamomile instead."

The queen winced, tensing as the mixture was applied to her wound. The area was really sensitive and it stung, but it wasn't unbearable. She nosed the poppy seeds aside, but ate the others as they were pushed towards her muzzle. It didn't take long for them to take affect, and almost as soon as her head hit her paws she fell asleep.
As soon as he finished bandaging the wound, Firetooth sat back, looking over the Queen one more time. He had been planning to sit and watch over Jetfire until she and the kits were all asleep, but luckily they all were exhausted anyway. After a brief moment of hesitation, he softly set his paw on her stomach again, his expression turning grave as he did so. "Freckledpaw," he meowed after a few seconds, careful to keep his voice down while his patient was resting. "Go fetch Ghostcrown, and both of you meet me in the Medicine Den." Lifting his paw, the ginger tabby stood up straight, pivoting around and striding out of the nursery towards his den.
Ghostcrown had a little trouble disposing of the webs, but once he was satisfied he headed back into the camp and lingered outside the entrance to the nursery. Should he go in? He was just taking up space, and he doubted she wanted to see him, but it felt wrong to just sit out here. He was saved from indecision when his brother strode out of the den, and he turned to Freckledpaw when she followed.
Freckledpaw nodded to her mentor and left the nursery, almost running into Ghostcrown as he lingered just outside. "Come with us." She said, flicking her tail before turning to follow Firetooth when he walked out behind her. The apprentice kept a gap between her and the two adults while they made their way to the medicine den. "So what is it you wanted to talk about?" She looked at her mentor curiously, it was obviously something he didnt want to say in front of Jetfire, but did that mean it was something bad?
Firetooth didn't respond to the inquiries of his brother or his apprentice, simply striding forward with a brief, silent motion of his tail for the two to follow. The ginger tom's expression was completely unreadable as the trio padded back across camp and into the Medicine Cat Den. He ducked his head down as he entered the dimly lit hollow, moving to the far back wall to give the others room to sit down in the slightly cramped space. For a moment, there was nothing but silence.
There was no doubt who the father was. There was no doubt he would be coming for them. That was the first solid thought that occurred to him: if Bloodystar was stubborn before, he would be relentless now.
His next thought was that Jetfire must be crushed. And if she wasn't... if she wasn't, he didn't know how to handle that, not after everything. If she wanted this...
Ghostcrown pushed the thought aside. "Does she know?" his voice was barely a whisper.
Firetooth avoided his gaze, unwilling to see the look of absolute shock that he knew was on his brother's face. "I highly doubt it," he admitted in a low, tired voice. "She isn't that far along. Between her wound and her apparent malnourishment, I'd be surprised if even Bloodystar knew about it; it took me actually placing my paw on her stomach to realize she was even pregnant." He squeezed his eyes shut, his mind racing. With Jetfire's condition being what it was, it would definitely be a difficult pregnancy. "I'll break the news to her tomorrow, after Freckledpaw and I give her current litter a full and proper check-up. I trust that you won't say anything to her before then."
"Let me tell her," he insisted without thinking. "She trusts me."
Does she still? He wasn't sure.
It made sense to Ghostcrown that the medicine cat should break the news. That was clear, logical sense: his brother knew how to handle this, he would smooth her grief easier than Ghostcrown could, and if she was happy about it, he would stay and help her then too. If she was proud of this litter, he doubted he was strong enough to stick around then and help her - just the thought made him long for a breath of clean air, and he stumbled a few steps back toward the den entrance. He trusted Firetooth, yet his mind was insistent that he should be there for her now, even after he royally screwed up before.
Firetooth raised a skeptical brow at his brother's sudden declaration, frowning. "Are you really sure you want to do that?" He asked with genuine concern in his meow, lifting his head to meet Ghostcrown's eyes with a stern, serious glare. "I have my doubts that she'll take the news well...but, perhaps it might be more believable for her to hear it from you. It depends on how far you're willing to see this through. You did it, you saved her. No cat would blame you if you walked away now, because it's not going to get any easier for either of you."
Ghostcrown swallowed hard, but he was already nodding again. "I didn't save her though, did I?" He was surprised by the bitterness in his tone. "Not soon enough. Now he's in her head, and she's expecting kits.. his kits, I'm sure. Saving her means helping her get through this."
He was still reeling from how this day started, and he was questioning whether he really wanted to do this... but he knew he had no choice. Jetfire was still his friend. If Firetooth had asked him this morning, maybe he would have been willing to step away, and that thought scared him now. She had betrayed him, and that hurt still burned, and he wasn't sure he would ever forget it. But she was still his friend, and after seeing all she had suffered in his absence, leaving her now was unimaginable.
His thoughts were in order now. He just wished he had more confidence that this choice wasn't going to backfire just as painfully as the last one.
He met Firetooth's gaze steadily. "I'll tell her."
