Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
"I think you'd made a good Scout. Are you interested?"
It was the first thing Chim said after he sat Midgefly down beneath a quiet spruce. Blunt, perhaps, but this wasn't the first cat he approached about the new position, and he was tired of dancing around the issue. It was better to be direct and get this over with, regardless of how she answered him.
The ginger leader studied her closely as he awaited her reply. Truth be told, she was nearly a stranger to him. Other than passing in camp a few times, he hadn't interacted with her, but he sensed she was exactly what he was looking for.

"Me?" Midgefly responded, "like, me be an actual scout? Who does the scouting and... stuff? With the other scouts? That would be my new job?" Her mind, already prone to a jumping all over the place, seemed to spin and she didn't blink even once as she peered at her leader. Fuzzypeach, upon introducing himself awhile back, assured her that his best friend and leader was a sweet, kind soul but before this very moment Midgefly hadn't actually spoken to him.
That thought of ohmystarclan he's talking to me for the first time and its to make me a scout made her eyes bug out more but she said nothing else as her bright gaze burned into him.
"Yes, Midgefly," he replied with exaggerated patience. "You would be a Scout just like the rest of them. You would make pilons, stand guard, look for new camps, and so on. Does that interest you?"
He did not like how big her eyes were getting. If he got her too excited, would they pop out of her head and roll away?

She nodded, though it was a jerky and she didn't stop once she began. "Okay, okay... okay," Midgefly still with huge eyes and a jerky, strange nod, seemed to be at a loss for anything of substance to say, "that uh, well, I gotta be honest Chimerastar, that sounds great. Fun but also important so not, like, too much fun. Ya know?"
"Sure, Midgefly," he repeated. She was a little more excitable than he thought she would be, rough around the edges for sure, but he was growing used to that. His clan seemed to attract free spirits. That was unfortunate for him, he would have preferred to have some stoic types around, but (not that he would ever admit it) positive, upbeat cats were good for Chim. He had enough negativity in his own mind, he couldn't handle anyone else piling on.
"You can have fun as long as you get the job done, okay? I don't think it will be too hard." Not that anyone had tried this before to say for sure.

"Oh sure, yeah, you're right," she stopped nodding and finally blinked, trying to look very scout-like, "so, Chimerastar, um, or do I call you Chimmster like Fuzzypeach said? Anyway, Chimmster, when do I start? And uh... you know, what the heck is a pilon? Also, I'm hungry so before I get to scoutin' I'm gonna hunt me a mouse. Cool?"
She liked her leader, he was giving her responsibility and seemed very friendly, as promised by her friend. Midgefly was filled with a sudden and very strong desire to make him proud and help her adopted clan succeed. It was a big world and often she felt as though she and SwiftClan were very small indeed.
"Please never call me Chimmster," the leader meowed immediately. "It's Chim. Just Chim."
He looked around them once, then sighed and offered a small nod. "You're right. Let's hunt down something to eat; then we can talk about cairns." His stomach was rumbling softly: no less than usual, but he liked to eat more while they were traveling. He needed to keep his energy up, and sometimes they passed through bountiful lands.

"Uh huh," she replied, not listening what-so-ever, "got it, sir."
Hunting, shockingly, was something she excelled at. It calmed her mind and kept her grounded, something even she knew she desperately needed to do more. Knowing that hunting would probably make her easier to be around - because she wasn't completely lacking self-awareness - the she-cat bounced up and dashed off as soon as he gave her the okay.
Well, that was unexpected. He just hoped she heard what he said about hunting and wasn't chasing a butterfly.
Chim headed away from their meeting place, slipping past the spruce and deeper into the woods. Blackberry bushes and honeysuckle surrounded him; he checked beneath each shrub for signs of prey and found they were plentiful. It was harder to isolate which scent was fresh enough to track.

Midgefly, small and light on her paws, slipped through the spruce and ferns and soon found a squirrel rummaging around under a particularly narrow-trunked tree. Pausing, the she-cat made sure her paws were placed on the soft ground and not on any leaves or sticks, and then crouched, all her whirling mind converging to focus wholly on the squirrel. Soft paw-steps and narrowed eyes full of purpose were the last things the squirrel heard and saw before she took it down. It wasn't a mouse, she realized after, but Chim probably wouldn't mind. Tail high, she made her way back to their meeting spot.
He couldn't help feeling a little wistful as he prowled beneath the trees. If a river had been nearby, he could have caught something from there water to eat, but the sound of moving water had been distant for a few days now. They had found plenty of pools to drink from, but Chim had already decided he wouldn't settle the clan down again until they were near a river or lake he could swim in.
Interrupted by the cry of a bird up above, Chim tilted his head back to scowl at a hummingbird as it hovered before him. The fiery little bird dipping down toward him menacingly, perhaps defending its nest, but the warrior didn't feel very threatened. He fell into a crouch, eyeing it until it swooped closer; then he lunged up, sinking his claws through the feathers and dragging the struggling bird back down for a killing bite.
Chim headed back to the gathering spot to find Midgefly had already returned. He blinked once in surprise, then gave her an approving nod. He set his prey down at his paws and greeted her, "Good-looking catch."

"Thanks, Chimerastar! You, uh, did well too. That's a nice bird you got there. I gotta squirrel. Eh, don't know if I can eat it all though. Anywhoo," she stopped talking, reminding herself to shut up before she just started saying random words. So she sat down and unceremoniously dug into her squirrel, happy to note that it tasted as good as it looked.
Chim raised a brow but didn't respond to her. He settled down with his prey, waiting until she was silent and eating before he began.
"Now, we were going to talk about cairns." He had spent a while perfecting the idea with the help of the other traveling cats, and a few outsiders he trusted well. "You'll be in charge of building them in each territory we choose to settle in. A tall pile of rocks, two or three cats high if you can manage, built on a high point so that every cat can see it while they're exploring. Then, depending on what's nearby, you can mark the stones." Chim went on to explain how some plants could be woven between the stones, or dyes smeared over the stones, to signify different warnings.

"Okay cool, no problem," Midgefly meowed, having stuffed her mouth full of squirrel and managed to chew and swallow without choking and dying in front of her leader, "but is there a reason for these, what are they called, karens? Other than to be high and also to be made of rocks."
"Cairns. We need a way to warn everyone what's around them," he explained. "Cats can look up at the rocks nearby, and see the message. Then they'll know if there's a fox in the area, or a flood is coming, or the camp is being attacked or moved again."

"Oh, that's nice for them," Midgefly agreed, "but like, how will we know a flood is coming?" Personally these cairns seemed like a lot of work with little pay off. But hey, she wasn't the leader. Chim was and what he said went.
"Well, if you're paying attention, you should notice a lot of dark clouds and heavy rain. That'll be your first hint... when the mud turns into a river, that'll be another sign." Chim rolled his eyes. He thought it would be fairly obvious, sometimes you could sense a flash flood on the wind, but then again he had grown up in the water.

Midgefly felt the tiniest spark of impatience, StarClan Chimerastar could be obtuse at times! "So, we just gotta go and build a karen if it starts raining?" It seemed dangerous to her. She took another bite of squirrel and stared at Chim with exaggerated innocence.

"Dibs on the rocks that tells cats about the fox," Midgefly meowed, swallowing. "But you should get two cats on that because I've heard there is two foxes around here."
