It was just another night, same as any other.
Or at least, that was how it felt to Batchaser now, as the young tom found himself poised on a cool, mossy rock. His duty was simple enough, and more than familiar. He knew the Moors just as well as he knew himself, with the grass that nearly obscured his vision, even from this vantage point, rolling with every gentle breeze that swept over the expanse. Far above, the red moon shone down bathing everything in crimson and burgundy hues, and on this night, the shadows that surrounded the tom felt darker than they ordinarily would have.
But that didn’t bother the tom. No, not at all.
Instead, he could admit, he felt antsy. After making one more, wary sweep of his surroundings, he turned his gaze eastward, eyeing the distant treeline of the Marsh. The itch to hunt was strong, but the itch to stay put just so happened to be stronger.
Completely hidden in the tall grass a pair of amber eyes (though in this lighting they were nearly the color of blood) watched the chocolate tabby with interest. The way he held himself up, and how serious he looked was amusing to her but she dared not to laugh, not wanting to give herself away just yet. On nimble paws she carefully weaved her way through the tall grass, following the breeze so that the rustling grass did not alert him to her. She moved in a wide circle until she was behind him. Slowly and gracefully she crouched down lower in the tall grass, posed in a hunter's crouch. A soft smirk graced her expression as she watched her prey, who for the moment seemed blissfully unaware of her presence.

And blissfully unaware he truly was, his thoughts giving way to what he'd much rather be doing, instead of being concerned with his active duty. He was largely still, only his tail indicating any kind of unrest as it swished back and forth idly. He was wide open for her to strike.
The huntress watched him closely, waiting for any indication that he was aware of her. After several heartbeats it seemed as though he was still ripe for the taking. Slowly she began to creep towards the tom, shortening the distance between them. Once she felt confident she could land her attack, she sprang, aiming to land squarely on the tom's shoulders.

He became aware of the presence behind him one second too late. It was enough for him to tense before the collision, starting forward just as his assailant slammed into his back. He let out a surprised hiss, ungracefully tumbling off of the side of the rock and falling into the grass, stunned just briefly by the suddenness of the attack and the proximity of his attacker, giving her another brief opening as he tried to gain both his bearings and his wits.
Without giving him a second to recover she launched herself off the rock, landing on his exposed underbelly. Lucky for him her claws where sheathed or that would of made things a bit more unpleasant. Now facing his attacker he could be able to see the small black she cat as she stood on him. A purr of amusement rumbled in her chest. "What kind of guard lets his guard down?"

Most of the struggle present within him seemed to die down the moment she landed on him and spoke. He would blink, looking up at the dark she-cat, intimately aware of the fact that her paws were pressing into him- no claws, thankfully.
"The bored kind." He would respond, wariness leaking into his tone as he tried to place her. "Can't a sentry enjoy the breeze in peace?"
The amused look turned to confusion as she tilted her head slightly. "Sentry? I've been watching this particular group of cats for awhile now and I've never heard any of them refer to them selves as a sentry" she taunted in a matter-of-fact tone. "Besides, I was just helping you out, you looked a bit bored from where I was standing."

"Sentry, guard, lookout, same thing." He would look her over, or at least, as much as he could from his placement beneath her. "You're right, I was. And now I'm.. unbored. And it's more like from where you were hiding."
"Why, exactly, have you been watching 'this group of cats'?"
"Well then I'm glad to be of service!" she purred happily, leaning down to get a better look at him. "I was in the grass, obviously you're not as great a sentry as you thought huh?" After another moment she jumped off him taking a few steps away to give him space to get up.

"To be fair, I'm having something of an off night." Her decision to let him up seemed to put him a bit more at ease, as he rose and tried his best to shake the bit of dirt from his fur. "Any other, and I would've noticed you."
"I'm out here because of my duty.. But it is pretty boring." He would look her over once more, now that they could properly see each other, before turning and hopping back onto the rock.
"Is that what you tell yourself?" She asked taking a step closer to him. "I bet I can out fox you any day and you wouldn't notice. You haven't even noticed that I've been hanging around here until I jumped right on top of you." She paused looking around briefly at their surrounding before focusing her attention back on him. "Why are you by yourself anyway?"

"Is that a challenge? Because it definitely sounds like a challenge." He would step closer to her in return, puffing up just a bit haughtily despite his non-serious tone. "Like I said, it's been an off night."
"I was selected to keep watch of the Moore lands tonight. There are others relatively nearby," he would glance towards the northwest and east, "with more important posts."
"Do you want it to be a challenge? I'll gladly best you at it" she smirked. Her eyes followed the directions he gave and she offered him an unconvinced look in return. "Really? Why would they be guarding the moor? Are you expecting the cats to climb down from the mountains to attack you?"
"Is that what you call what that was a few minutes ago? taking me on?" Her amber eyes danced with amusement as she regarded him, she dared to get closer to him, standing on her hind legs with her forelegs leaning on the rock as she watched him. "Has it ever accord to you that the real danger could be right in front of you?"

"I'd call that you getting the drop on me, sure.." He would turn to look at her, meeting her gaze with amusement of his own. "But you're not going to get me like that again."
"I've been considering that, but you don't seem particularly deadly to me.. Yet."
"Aw, you don't think so?" a small frown settled on her lips as she watched him, for the first time tonight she looked rather... disappointed. "That's how I 'Got the drop on you, you know' you underestimate your opponent" she sighed. "Though I can't imagine why, nothing I've seen so far has been very impressing."

He would laugh, "Oh, so we're actually opponents? Because that'd definitely change things.. And technically, I didn't even realize I had an opponent, but I guess that's on me."
"What would impress you, Oh, Huntress of the Moor?"
At his laugh the amusement on her expression withered completely. In a quick moment she jumped, using her front paws to pull herself up she aimed to headbutt him right under the chin. "A real challenge would be a great start."
