To say that Jetfire had been going through a lot lately was an understatement. Not only had she lost most of the members of her family at that paws of Bloodyrondo, but now that she had been forced to marry the guy surely even those that remained probably hated her now as well. Her soul was now bound as one, to the very cat responsible for all of this.
She gazed out over the windswept sands from her perch, a small leaf bundle lying between her front paws. She could feel the kits in her stomach wiggling and kicking. She was nearly halfway through her first pregnancy, but she fully intended on it being her last. A tear slid down her cheek and she slowly unfolded the bundle to reveal its bright red contents. A mixture of herbs sure to help her accomplish her goal "I'm sorry little ones" she sobbed, her tail wrapping protectively over her swollen belly the tears come faster now faced with the choice she needed to make "You did nothing wrong, but I can't bring you into this war zone... It would be better for you to just go on peacefully to the isle now than to live a life full of suffering" she tried to convince herself that she was doing the right thing. The herbs she had prepared would make it painless for the kits she was carrying, although she would suffer for a while before passing on. Perhaps Bloodystar would suffer to...... Since their souls were now bound, he should feel every excruciating moment even if it didn't kill him
"You mom loves you" she continued, sobbing in between"I'm just not strong enough to do this on my own"
He was out on the hunt for feathers, moss, long strands of ivy, and anything else he could use as a toy. Ghostcrown loved his family dearly and he wanted them to have the best life. The clan was in turmoil but he didn't want their early lives to be destroyed because of it, so he sheltered them the best he could and fought against the inevitable. What would their mother say if she knew what the clan was like now? He hated to think she might take them away from him.
Though as he padded along the ridge in search of gifts, he caught sight of Jetfire, and he had to suppress a sigh. Maybe it was wrong of him to use his kits to get closer to her, and he couldn't deny he was doing that, but his heart went out to her suffering. Everything that was happening was centered around her family, but she was so isolated from all the others, he couldn't help reaching out. Ghostcrown always liked a challenge, and becoming her friend was one of the more difficult tricks he'd ever have to pull off.
Ghostcrown worked his way down toward her, his easy smile fading away as he heard her sobbing. His gaze darted quickly to the herbs by her paw and he swallowed hard. He wasn't a medicine cat and he couldn't identify the berries, but he could guess what they were for.
"Jetfire?" he called softly from behind her, keeping a long distance between them and approaching slowly. He didn't want to push her to make any choices she would regret. "I didn't expect to see you this far from camp, but what a beautiful view. I can see why you would want to come over here, it's peaceful."

The Sweet
Jetfire started at the red berries paste she had put together, sitting there in bright contrast to the deep green of the leaf that it lied upon. She couldn’t help but wonder if her blood would contrast the same way once she had eaten them. Death was a scary thing for, but the prospect of staying here any longer was far scarier. At least in death she knew what was waiting for her. She and her kits could live on the isle in peace, they would never know the cruelty of this life she would be bringing them into. She swallowed hard, trying to muster up the courage to take the herbs before her. Just one bite and it would all be over... perhaps she would even get to see her sister Satinlights again. This gave her peace with her decision, lowering her muzzle down toward the leaf. It was almost as if the kits inside of her knew what was about to happen. They began wiggling kicking furiously causing her to pause.... With a loud yowl, she pushed the bundle, watching as it tumbled down the rock leaving smears of red in it’s wake. She just couldn’t do it, these kits wanted to fight... they wanted to live. Her choices had been taken away from her, she couldn’t take away their choice.
Ghostcrown arrived just as she sent the bundle hurling into the sands below. At the sound of his voice she turned her head to face him. Her eyes were bloodshot, tears staining a path down her cheeks as they ran freely. Her sides quivering as she breathed, her paws trembling. Waves of guilt and horror washed over her, as her eyes landed on his face “Ghostcrown...” she choked managed to choke out through her constricted throat in between the sobs. He wasn’t supposed to have seen that, no one was. They were supposed to just find her body after she was gone.
Ghostcrown felt a rush of relief when the leaf rolled over the side of the cliff and out of reach. She wasn't out of danger yet - they were standing up on a ledge, and one wrong step was all it would take - but she had made her decision, and all he had to do was keep her from changing her mind.
But now that the immediate threat was out of the way, there was nothing to stop him from getting in closer. Ghostcrown closed the distance between them and brushed up against her side, positioning himself between her and the edge of the rocks. He held his cheek against hers, purring fierce and reassuring.
"Hey, hey," he murmured, "it's okay, you're okay. I'm here for you. You're not alone now. It's okay, you can let it all out."

That was all the permission that she needed, she buried her nose in his fur quickly soaking it with her tears squeezing her her eyes closed. She was shaking all over claws digging it into the stone so hard that she felt the snap and begin to ooze blood. She sobbed, tying to find words but they stay floating in her throat never quite able to make it out into the open air. What was she even supposed to say?
"I can't go back there" she sobbed, almost incoherently in a blur of words that came tumbling out all crashing into one another "I can't do this"
"Then we won't. We won't go back there, not until you're ready. I don't care how long it takes." He cradled her tight against his chest. Her paws were bleeding and he knew he should look at them, but he couldn't bring himself to let her go now, so he cuddled her and whispered fiercely into her ear.
"You can take an hour or a day or a moon. We'll find a den, a quiet corner where you can rest, and I'll keep Boodystar off your back. If you need to be alone, I'll make it happen. Whatever you need, we can figure it out." Escaping the High Priest was dangerous now more than ever. They had tied the knot, they were connected in more ways than one now, but if she needed to leave he wouldn't hesitate. Ghostcrown had sat by and watched her suffering, he had done nothing so his own family would be safe, but how could he stand by now and let this continue to happen?

Jetfire melted into his embrace, the will to fight fleeing her body. She tried to focus on the words that he whispered in her ears, the feeling of his heart beating under the soft fur of his chest as her paws as her bleeding paws intertwined with his fur as she tried to ignore the thoughts that bounced within her mind like wrecking balls breaking her down every time she thought she had finally found some peace within the swirling vortex of emotions
"Every time he touches me my skin crawls like it's covered in fleas, whenever he look at me I shudder and shake. The sound of his voice is enough to make me bristle"she paused unable to stop the words from coming now "My family hates me for being with him, my sister's won't even look at me. My mother didn't even say a single word when I went to prison to visit her, and dad didn't say anything but he is disappointed in me to... I thought the worst was over, that now that he had gotten what he wanted he would leave me alone, but now there is no escaping him. It doesn't matter how far I run or how hard I fight. His wretched soul is bound to mine... Doesn't that make me just as bad as him?"
"Bloodystar is your mate and the father of your kits, but that is everything he can claim," he swore. "Your connection doesn't mean you're anything like him, Jetfire. He made his own choices, and you aren't responsible for anything he's done. I'm sorry your family doesn't support you, but that's on them, not you. You made the best decision you could, and he trapped you into the rest."
Ghostcrown still didn't understand her relationship with the High Priest, not completely; he knew Bloodystar had chosen her for a reason and that he was the father of the litter she was expecting, so they must have had some feelings for each other, but then she didn't seem happy to become his mate. Had her perception of him changed after he imprisoned her family, or had something else been going on all that time?
He shook his head ever so slightly. "Jetfire, if he doesn't make you happy, you don't have to go back to him."

“You just don’t understand” she sobbed, pulling away with a sudden jerk. The truth danced along her tongue, only the consequences of Bloodystar finding out that she had revealed their secret holding her back “He can claim whatever he likes, it doesn’t make it the truth....” she trailed off sinking even deeper and starting to pull away from the only comfort she had found in many moons. She couldn’t tell him.... it would be putting him and his kits in danger, just him being here would be enough for Bloodystar to order his execution. She turned her back to him, her heart feeling like a wedge was being driven deeper into her heart. For a moment it had been so nice just to have him there, someone that cared. Someone that she could confide in... “but he isn’t and never will be their father... I’ll die first....” she looked of ledge of the rock thoughts of jumping over the edge filling her mind. Perhaps that would be an easier way to go... to just close her eyes and jump. Yet the images of her mother’s broken body after her fall kept her from acting on the thoughts even as the came to the forefront of her mind
“You day I don’t have to return to him, but what choice do I have? He holds the life of my entire family within his claws. I could try running away and being marked for death, but how many cats would suffer because of that decision? If I fight he has already told me exactly what he will do to me...” a shiver of utter horror made it’s way down her spine “ and if I don’t fight, my fate shall be even worse” she added glumly “This is my only way out that won’t end in my entire family being slaughtered or tortured... you say you want to help, if you really mean that than help me end my life... “ she was trembling tears falling one by one down her cheek
His brow furrowed as she pulled away from him, and as she looked over the edge, he felt a surge of renewed anxiety. What was she thinking about? He couldn't understand what she was talking about, he didn't know what truth she was referring to, but he did know that look in her eyes.
Ghostcrown eased between her and the edge once again, the movement precise and calm. He was here to help, he wanted nothing more than to take away all her suffering and set her free, but this wasn't the way and it never would be. On that point, he was firm: as long as he was here, she was not falling over the side of that cliff.
"He doesn't have to be involved in their lives at all, not if you don't want him to," he agreed readily. In the end, blood meant nothing, and the Priest had no right to be a part of her family if she didn't want him. He had cut his own father out of his life many moons ago, and he never regretted it. Ghostcrown had been lucky to find a new father figure after that, one of the noblest cats he had ever known, but not every cat would find a new family as he had. Her kits wouldn't need to; their mother had more than enough love for them, of that he was sure, even if their blood father was a monster.
He gently stroked her cheek with the back of his paw, her tears warm against his skin. "He's lying to you, Jetfire. He would never kill your family, it would mean losing all the leverage he has... and our clan isn't without compassion either, and we remember everything Littlestar did for us. If he hurts them too deeply, more than just imprisonment, he'll lose his power over the clan. They're already starting to turn on him. Bloodystar is a smart cat, but words are wind, and he won't follow through on any of his threats."
“He might not kill them, but there are things far worse than death" she wanted to take the paw that stroked her cheek and just hold it there, to stop time from moving forward even if just for a bit longer... "Please..."she pleaded gently placing her paws onto his "You don't know what he is capable of... The things that he has already done... The things he wants to do... " she almost stopped herself for what she said next, but she was already willing to die so what else was there to loose?
"Bloodystar isn't the father of these kits.. he is their uncle" she looked down at the ground unable to meet his gaze "Sorrowfularia is their real father, not that he would ever acknowledge that.... He strung me and my sister along, but when he found out that I was pregnant he rejected me and the kits that I am carrying. He denied everything in front of Silverfringe, and she believed every lying word that came out of his mouth. I was upset... but more importantly I was afraid of what my parents were going to think. You already know what happened when she found out that Satinlights was pregnant. It wouldn't have been the end of the world, but I couldn't face the disappointment in their eyes..." she seemed to be shutting down withdrawing inwards as the memories became more and more painful
"Bloodystar was the first to figure out that I was pregnant... he approached me asking how his brother was taking the news. When I told him what was going on he was so angry... I thought that if anyone would understand what I was facing it was him He offered...." she choked up trying to be able to continue talking but it was clear that it was really hurting her to even speak of it "He offered to claim the kits as is to save me and my family from the humiliation of a fatherless litter. He always seemed so gentle with the kits of the clan, and honestly I thought that having him help raise them wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. We both agreed that even though he would claim them, that we would tell my family that we were not a couple. That things just hadn't worked out between us and that he would take the brunt of my mother's wrath... I was such a fool to say yes..."
What happened next was rather self explanatory. How the rumors of Bloodystar being the father had spread, and how he had taken advantage of the situation "He began feeding me herbs saying they were to help with pregnancy and morning sickness, but really it was to force my milk to come in early... What he did to my mother... it wasn't a spur of the moment decision, he had been planning it for a long time thinking things through... I was just to blind to see it.. I should have seen it, I should have warned her... I could have stopped all of this, but I didn't" she broke down crying "Its all my fault all of it"
"I couldn't just leave my sibling's to his mercy. He is raising them to hate our parents and everything they stood for. At least if I nursed them I could tell them about all the good things she has done, and protect them as much as I could from what was going on... He used them against me... If I refused to marry him then he wasn't just going to take them from me... He was going to make them be the ones punish me, and I couldn't do that to them. I just couldn't. I have done everything hes asked of me, and he still isn't happy not until.." she shuddered shaking " I..he..." she tried to say the words but it felt like everything was crashing down on her "as soon as I give birth... he..." was there really anyway else to say this? "plans on getting me pregnant again..."
Ghostcrown had been through hell. He had been betrayed by the cat he trusted most, judged and looked down upon by his peers and his mentors, laughed at and spurned, he had watched his found family fall to pieces and lost his father, he had chosen to risk his life by staying in this clan with his kittens instead of leaving to find a happier home with the cats he had grown up with. He had suffered, he had overcome difficulties, and now that he was on the other side he realized that his struggles were minute. They had been challenges for him but compared to what Jetfire was going through, his tribulations had been nothing.
Only here he was, on the other side, and putting himself back into the middle of it all. This time, he reflected, he might not return so unscathed. Talking to her like he already had been was dangerous enough; he was putting his life on the line being here with her, but he knew if it came down to it, a few persuasive words might be enough to save his life. If he could convince Bloodystar he had meant well here, that he had tried to save her, he might be okay. But not if he continued down this path any further.
The mostly-black tomcat leaned back and studied her quietly. She looked so plain, so normal. What had she ever done to deserve all this heartbreak? Why should he be willing to die for her? He could walk away right now and keep himself safe. He had a family now. But they were nearly grown, and they would be apprentices soon enough, and then they wouldn't need him anymore. How could he sit here and let her suffer any longer?
She had trusted him. If Bloodystar knew what she had told him, Jetfire would be punished harshly. He closed his eyes and exhaled softly. Her tears were dried against his paw pad, but he still felt the warmth of their tracks.
"Okay," he said quietly, and he knew his heart was set. His time would be short now, he would need to make a few last arrangements so his family would be safe and looked after. Messages could be sent to SwiftClan to tell them of his demise. That wouldn't take long to organize after he was done here; he could buy himself enough time.
"Okay. Here's what I've got. Two options." Ghostcrown met her gaze. I'll take you away now, and we'll find somewhere safe he will never find you, never hurt you. I'll take you to my childhood home and make you the softest den to rest in; I'll send my brother to be your healer and help you give birth. Then I'll take a scrap of your fur, spill some of my own blood, and return to camp. I'll tell Bloodystar I killed you to end your suffering, and while we fight, I'll send an army of deserters and allies to free your family.
Or." Or. It hung in the air between them as he took a deep breath.
"Or, I'll go back to camp and I'll tell him exactly where you are and what you mean to do. I'll send him to this exact spot, and when he comes to fetch you, we'll corner him. Autumngossamer will help us curse him like she once did the Sun God, and we'll bring him to his knees and make sure he can never hurt anyone ever again."
Ghostcrown raised his chin and looked at her solemnly. Once, it had been rare to catch him being serious; now he felt incapable of humor. "Jetfire, I won't let you go back there. I will not let you die. You don't deserve what happened to you, you didn't ask for it, and I won't let him hurt you any longer. None of this is your fault, you made the best you could out of a bad situation. Who could ever fault you for looking for a little love? Look, Jetfire, I'm so incredibly sorry for everything that happened to you. I can't change your past, but I can change your future. Let me do this. Let me rescue you. Please."

Jetfire looked utterly defeated, her head hung low ears fallen back against her head, fresh tear stains under her blood shot eyes. Crumbling down like a wilted flower crushed under the weight of the world. Even now that the truth was out in the open, she braced herself for retribution. For Ghostcrown to turn on her too, or a cruel twist of fate to intervene. Each time she acted out in rebellion, it has been beaten out of smash, stepped on, and defeated. Just have the courage to face what had taken place, to cry out for help had taken what little strength remained of her.
"I can't ask you to do that..." she swallowed hard, but she didn't shut him down "You have a family of your own to think about. If you do this, Bloodystar won't stop until you are dead" He was her one glimmer of hope in all this, her only break in the constant torment that had become her new reality "I can't loose you to...."
Perfectkit's voice interrupted Ghostcrown and Jetfire's conversation and, moments later, the large silver-furred kit made his way over to the couple. He took strongly after Lionpride, at least, as far as his size went, and could easily pass as an apprentice. He padded right up to Jetfire and rubbed his head against hers in greeting, noticing the tears only when he felt dampness against his cheek when he drew away. He cocked his head in concern and shortly glared daggers at Ghostcrown, "What did you do to my sister?!"
Bloodystar was not far behind him, but remained silent, his expression glacial as he surveyed the scene. What stood out to him most of all was the bitter scent of deathberries and other dangerous herbs, and from there it didn't take a medicine cat to figure out what Jetfire had just tried to do. Her mouth did not seemed dyed by the poison, however and, had she actually consumed the berries by now, she would be showing symptoms. He let out a breath he had not realized he was holding. He knew Jetfire was depressed, but he had seriously underestimated her resolve. Bloodystar had almost lost her.

SunClan Warrior
The Sweet
Her heart seemed to stop, the sound of her little brother's voice reaching her ears. But it was the cat that followed behind him that sent a shudder down her spine. Her eyes fell to the ground, as she began to shut down and withdraw deep within herself. The light in her gaze extinguished.
What had Bloodystar overheard? Would he be able to figure out what had just transpired here? But more importantanly.. What would he do to Ghostcrown. Her words caught in her throat, unable to answer either of them.
Noting Jetfire's silence, Bloodystar turned his burning celadon eyes to the tom at her side, a new idea forming at the same time he spoke it, "Ghostcrown. Care to explain why you are trying to feed my wife death berries?"
Judge, jury, and executioner stood on that hill with them, but he wasn't afraid. The High Priest could scare him now. Ghostcrown had accepted his fate, and he felt immortal. He was going to die, and soon, but not today; he had already decided how he would fall, his mind was set, and he was not going to die like this. The knowledge of his impending death made him certain, calm, and not once did it occur to him that the High Priest may not be interested in adhering to his plan.
He looked resolutely into Jetfire's eyes, his support unwavering as he slowly turned to face Bloodystar. He stepped between the two of them, guarding her closely with his life. "I'm afraid you're mistaken," he told Bloodystar calmly. "The berries weren't for Jetfire at all, they were for you. I found them while I was out hunting and I thought you might be in need of more in your stores; I had no idea they were poisonous until I ran into Jetfire here. Thankfully, she recognized them and pushed them over the cliff edge."
"Strange, you've never collected herbs for me before... and we teach kits the difference between deathberries and literally any other berry at a young age. Perhaps you should spend the night next to my den so I can more closely monitor your health. Clearly something is very wrong for your common sense to abandon you so severely," Bloodystar was not buying this explanation in the slightest however he would let Ghostcrown get away with it. Judging by the way this tom looked at Jetfire and she him, Bloodystar could tell that they were close to one another, and what was that saying? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer? He turned his burning gaze away from Ghostcrown and back to the broken she-cat at his side, "Jetfire. We need to get back to camp, you now how restless the little ones get when you are gone for long."
“I’m sure you teach your kits very well, but I’m not from here,” he told him gently. “EarthClan has a cruel leader when I was growing up, and he did not care for herbs. I was never taught the difference between helpful plants and harmless ones. I would be honored to spend time near your den, though.”
He dipped his head slightly, respectful until the end. There were far worse punishments, and he wouldn’t mind the chance to keep an eye on Jetfire and her family.
"The cats of EarthClan must have had bees for brains if they failed to educate you on such a critical herb. No wonder they are no longer around today. I say good riddance, and Mistyrose would say natural selection," Bloodystar growled, padding right up to Ghostcrown but changing direction last second to prod Jetfire's side, hard enough that her whole body shook against Ghostcrown's, "I said we are leaving, Jetfire."
