Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. "Y'know, for that I just might teach you the worst crouch," laughed Breezepaw. As revenge for her remark, and also to emphasize his following words, he pressed his paw into her side and gave a shove that would surely knock her out of her unbalanced stance. "You need to spread your paws further apart, and lean back onto your heels instead of forward on your toes. You want to feel like you're hovering, but you need to be able to spring forward and maneuver quickly, so you want to have a good balance."
His pelt may not have been as thick and as unruly as Fluffypaw's, but it wasn't far off in length. Even so, it seemed but an extension of his languid body as he swept into a crouch of his own, muscles taut beneath the ink-tinctured abyss of his striped coat. Each step he made in demonstration was precise, even, and unhurried, a new level of calm seeming to befall Breezepaw as he stalked through the field. He didn't blend any better than Fluffypaw, but in this moment, he was no more than a shadow in the grass.
Fluffypaw emitted a rather embarrassingly high-pitched yelp as she was unexpectedly shoved off her feet. "See, Shrikepaw would never do that to me," she complained, which was almost definitely false. She shut up quickly though, taking in Breezepaw's form with rapturous attention from where she lay in the grass, trying to commit every detail of it to memory.
She stepped to her feet, and dropped into a crouch a step behind Breezepaw, eyeing the way that he distributed his weight. Standing in a stationary crouch, she slowly shifted her weight around on her paws until she reached something that she thought felt almost like hovering. It wasn't quite on Breezepaw's level, but it was much improved from her first attempt.
"Good," he murmured with the swiftest of glances of his shoulder. "Now, stalk forward and see if you find it easier to balance. Your steps should be quieter now, too."
Overhead, the flutter of wings could be heard as a flock of doves decided to take roost among the flowers. He gestured to Fluffypaw to bring her attention to them and for her to take the lead in advancing on them. "Let's see how many we can catch, eh?" Breezepaw challenged her when she drew near.
Inept though she may be, Fluffypaw wasn't stupid, and although her first youthful instinct was to rather loudly shout that it was on while diving straight into the flock of birds ahead, she did not do that. She nodded to Breezepaw, silent as a stone, as she crept forward, ears pricked towards any possible rustle of feathers. Stepping slowly forward on her newly found balance, each step was careful, and with every step she paused for a moment to reevaluate her stance and make sure her weight was still balanced on each foot.
With a pang, she eyed the juiciest-looking dove of them all, far away in the center of the flock. Breezepaw could probably catch that one without even disturbing the rest, she thought inwardly. Taking a more realistic approach, Fluffypaw set her sights on the dove that had landed the closest to her. It looked a little scrawnier and a little older than most of the others, but hey, a bird was a bird right?
Never looking away, Fluffypaw focused, shifting on her paws in preparation, and then sprung - and felt her claws slice through soft feather and connect with flesh. Her teeth snapped down around the bird's neck, strangling its call almost before it opened its beak.
Before the ensuing scramble could commence, as the flock realized their attempt at a quiet break from their flight was not so quiet after all, a flash of ink-striped fur lunged by Fluffypaw on soundless paws, Breezepaw laying claim to the bird that was only a bit further than the one hanging now-deceased in his friend's maw. He dropped his prey and hazarded a second kill, leaping skyward after his airborne victim, but all he managed to take back to the earth with him was a mouthful of feathers. I didn't expect to get that anyway, he thought, though that thought was fleeting as he turned a tremendously proud expression towards Fluffypaw. "Thft wusf gr-"
A sneeze rocketed all the feathers from his mouth, and whichever ones were leftover were promptly spat out in a series of gags, assuring that if the chorus of squawks and fluttering wings didn't clear the area of other prey venturing from their nests, the prey most certainly was not coming back out now. "That was great!" He praised again, this time much more clearly. "Did it feel easier this time?" Was this what it was like to be a mentor? If so, the tom couldn't wait for the day he was a warrior entrusted with his own protege.
Fluffypaw barely had time to feel proud of herself before she looked at Breezepaw and promptly burst into uncontrollable laughter as he erupted in a violent sneeze. "Sneezepaw! That's it!" she declared, barely choking it out through the giggles. "That's your nickname. It even rhymes!" She paused, her giggles subsiding, mirth alive in her gaze - and then she caught site of a stray feather that had been launched into the sky from his violent sneeze drifting back down to earth and the laughter started all over again. "Y-yeah," she finally said, after several minutes of being a pure wall of laughter. "It was easier, that balance thing helped. Thanks, Sneezepaw," she snickered.
"Oh, shut up Muddypaw," Breezepaw said, lacking heat. He liked Smugpaw a bit better if you asked him, but Fluffypaw's roaring laughter affirmed that it was no longer up for debate so he resigned himself to the fate of living a double life as both Breezepaw and Sneezepaw. It was a little funny- not that he was ever going to admit that, stifling his own snickers. "C'mon, you're supposed to be teaching me next."
Fluffypaw's laughter was not appeased so easily. "Maybe your warrior name can be Breezesneeze," she giggled, her ribs beginning to ache from laughter. "Oh, I think I'll definitely have to suggest that to Flamingstar next time I see him," she said, nodding eagerly. "I don't think I need to teach you anything, you can just - just sneeze, and all the SunClan warriors will just be blown away," she said, thoroughly dissolving into laughter once again at the thought of Breezepaw vanquishing a whole battle party with one sneeze.
"They'll never see it coming," agreed Breezepaw. He would be hailed as a hero unheard of ever before, the champion who could fell an army without lifting a single one of his paws- and so what if he had to do it as Breezesneeze? Sneezystar didn't sound so bad if it came with the perks of fame and adulation. "I'll sneeze them away and you'll be camouflaged in the mud waiting to finish them off," he told Fluffypaw with a solemn, knowing nod.
