Crouched low against the forest floor, Shieldheart prowled slowly toward an unsuspecting squirrel. The creature was idly chewing on a nut with its back facing him. The warrior's mouth salivated at its plump body as he imagined biting into the meat there. Out of all of the prey he'd caught this morning, this was the one he'd have for himself. Before he could launch himself at the squirrel though, the crack of a twig in the distance had the rodent scurrying up the nearest tree. Shieldheart swore as he pushed off the ground, but he knew he'd lost his chance.
He scowled as he turned away from the high branches of the tree and in the direction the noise had come from. The scent of a FallClan cat reached his nose, but he couldn't quite pin which clanmate it belonged to. An apprentice maybe? He shrugged and started walking through the bushes to get to them. Didn't matter who it was, he'd still chew their ear off for this.
WHEN HE HAS LOST ALL HOPE, ALL OBJECT IN LIFE, MAN BECOMES A MONSTER IN HIS MISERY
It hadn't taken Darlingpaw long to decide she wouldn't be cooped up in camp all day long, bored in the crowded space and waiting for some cat to annoy her and so she slipped through the entrance and wondered deep into Fallclan territory, her ever present scowl plastered on her face. She had no intentions of hunting or being productive and instead had gathered a small pile of twigs, laying with her belly against the ground she slowly began to break each twig in half, a satisfying crack ringing out each time. The thought of her activity possibly disturbing anyone out hunting had crossed her mind, but it only gave her more reason to continue, crack... crack... Once each of her twigs was broken in two she began to snap them again until her small pile had grown larger.

There was no need to follow a scent trail with a rhythm of cracking twigs much more noticeable. The first one, he'd thought might have been an accident, but now it was obvious this was all done on purpose. But why? When Shieldheart stepped into the occupied clearing, the fur along his spine was bristling. His green eyes lasered in on the she-cat sitting next to her pile of twigs and he faltered. He recognized the apprentice as Darlingpaw, what with her scarred pelt, and he was overwhelmed with pity. But then, another twig snapped, and so did he.
"You trying to scare off all the prey in FallClan or what?" he bit out.

She heard his footsteps before she caught his scent, a smirk replacing her scowl as Shieldheart stepped into her clearing, without looking up she swiveled her ears toward him as he snapped at her. Her eyes still on the ground she thought for a moment, lifting another twig and letting it bend between her paws until it snapped.
"Well, I was hoping to reach the forest clans, but so long as I've manged to scare everything I suppose that fine." There was not a trace of guilt or apology in her voice, in fact one could say she was rather pleased that she had angered the warrior.

Shieldheart's tail lashed at her relaxed tone, but his lips were starting to quirk into a grin. Oh, he was frustrated. Always seemed to be, but he wasn't the most serious of guys either. The gal had spunk, he had to give her that. But she wasn't getting off easy. Not for ruining a perfectly good meal.
He walked up to her in the same way he always carried himself--with heavy steps as if he had the weight or muscle to back it up. His eyes were still hardened, but there was now a glint of amusement in them too. He didn't bother to hide this since Darlingpaw had yet to meet his gaze. "Well, ya ain't scaring me," he said with a click of his tongue. "Shouldn't you be training or something, Darling?" He chuckled a little at the petname, feeling pretty proud of himself.
WHEN HE HAS LOST ALL HOPE, ALL OBJECT IN LIFE, MAN BECOMES A MONSTER IN HIS MISERY
At last she lifted her gaze, her blue eyes glittering angrily snapped to meet his. Darling? Who does this over sized fuzzball think he is?! The thought raged through her like ocean waves on a stormy night, he obviously didn't know much about her, though no body did. Only a select few had any idea of the horror she and her siblings had gone through, everyone else simply saw the scars that marred her coat.
"You aren't worth my time to try and scare, why don't you bug off and see if you can catch something." Just as the words left her mouth, she lifted her hind leg and brought it crashing down onto another twig, the force of the pressure breaking it apart and causing one final CRACK to bellow out. In the distance the call of alarmed birds followed, most likely retreating back to the safety of the trees, her eyes never once leaving the warriors.

The anger in Darlingpaw's eyes caught him by surprise. This wouldn't be the first time he'd been on the receiving end of a she-cat's wrath, but he couldn't think of why he'd deserve it in this situation. She was the one that had disturbed his hunting... The abrupt crack that followed her words was a clear signal for him to leave, but he wouldn't give her that pleasure. Grinning, albeit a little forced, he cocked his head to the side. "Hey, now! What's got your whiskers in a bunch?"
He paused for a moment in mock deliberation, then lit up with a "sudden" idea. "One of these twigs give ya a sliver or something?" Then, stepping into her personal space, Shieldheart made to push the branches closest to her away. "Just another reason why you shouldn't be playing with em."
WHEN HE HAS LOST ALL HOPE, ALL OBJECT IN LIFE, MAN BECOMES A MONSTER IN HIS MISERY
He still wasn't getting it, the fun of disturbing his outing had vanished and now she just wanted him to leave; she thought that he was doing just that as his paws began to move but then why was he getting closer to her instead of farther away? Too close, he was too close, his words falling on now deaf ears, she could only hear a hazy ringing.
"Stop!" She cried out, her earlier anger laced tone shaking. She pulled herself backwards to put space between them but her legs gave way beneath her and she collapsed to the ground, her blue eyes screwed shut as her body quivered. Darlingpaw worked hard to keep distance between herself and others to avoid this situation and for moons everything had been fine. She kept her eyes shut tight but could still feel how close Sheldheart was standing, clips of her past began to flash in her mind, the scars on her pelt burning at the memories. How pitiful she must look now.

Shieldheart froze as the apprentice shrieked and fell back. His muscles tensed and his paws became rooted to the ground. In the back of his mind he knew he should create more space between them, but his brain wasn't working right and his body wasn't responding. He didn't know that she would react in such a way, but he was only messing around. He hadn't meant to upset her so much and he found no pride in doing so. Regret was bubbling up inside him, rising in his throat, and making it hard to breathe. His mouth opened and he choked out the only thing he could think to say, "I'm sorry." If Swordstrike was here, he'd know what to do to make this better. The empath probably would've managed to avoid this whole fiasco, but this was Shieldheart, and he was no good at handling things like this. All he could do was blame himself.
WHEN HE HAS LOST ALL HOPE, ALL OBJECT IN LIFE, MAN BECOMES A MONSTER IN HIS MISERY
Darlingpaw let out a gasp as if she had been holding her breath, her chest felt tight and every muscle in her body like stone. The ringing in her ears was still present but through it she made out the sound of Shieldhearts voice. I'm sorry. She knew she had to snap out of this, it hadn't been this bad before. Mustering whatever strength she could the apprentice began to slowly crawl backwards, dragging her belly across the ground as she did.
It was obvious that the warrior meant her no harm, deep down she knew that or else he would have already done something, but her mind and heart were at war, fighting on opposing sides. Unscrewing her ocean blue eyes she let them flutter open at last but did not let them meet his. "Stay there." her voice shook with an almost pleading tone, a sound no one had heard from her before to match perfectly with a side of her he was the first to witness.

He couldn't seem to look away from her as she dragged herself back a ways. It was as if he'd struck her from the way the apprentice was acting, and Shieldheart desperately wanted to know why. His pale green eyes darted around her form, but an answer didn't jump out at him. Nothing even stood out to him besides the scars. The scars! His breath hitched, realizing that the she-cat had so many, so young. Whatever had given them to her might have something to do with her reaction now. I'm such an idiot.
"Okay," he breathed, relieved to hear her voice and see her eyes. She wasn't looking at him though and that made him avert his eyes too. "Okay, I can do that." The tremble to Darlingpaw's words made him feel nauseous, and he clenched his jaw so hard it was painful.
WHEN HE HAS LOST ALL HOPE, ALL OBJECT IN LIFE, MAN BECOMES A MONSTER IN HIS MISERY
She was starting to regain her composure, with the distance between them returned and his compliance to remain in place, Darlingpaws muscles began to relax. A ragged but airy breath flowed out and she lifted her intense blue gaze to meet eyes, the fear that had been there an just a moment ago now faded. "What kind of a mouse-brained-" Despite the shake still in her voice she planned fully on yelling and berating the warrior, but the look currently distorting his features shoved the words right back down her throat. "Whats wrong with your face?" He didn't get hurt, so why...?

He heard Darlingpaw's reprimanding tone, and his gaze burned holes into the ground. It didn't matter that he was a warrior and she an apprentice. Whatever she had to say, he deserved to hear. A memory of his dad's scolding flashed in his mind, but he dragged himself back so he could listen to her. But she wasn't yelling now. In fact, she sounded confused. His eyes slowly lifted to meet hers and he didn't like the expression he found. Forcing his features to harden and morph back into his normal scowl, he shook his head. "Nothing. You okay?" he asked. His scared, breathy voice was marvelously long gone and replaced with his natural voice --gruff and almost angry sounding. But if he was angry, it was only at himself.
WHEN HE HAS LOST ALL HOPE, ALL OBJECT IN LIFE, MAN BECOMES A MONSTER IN HIS MISERY
Her mouth opened again but nothing came out, when was the last time someone had asked if she was okay? "I'm fine, don't worry about me, I'm used to it." She slowly lifted her body, planting her paws to the ground in an attempt to stand, her legs were still trembling a little but they managed to hold her weight. The whirlwind of emotions rocketing through her didn't seem to be calming, she was angry about what happened, embarrassed that someone has seen it, and even slightly afraid that the warrior may use it against her or tell the clan what he had seen. "You wont tell anyone will you?" She lowered her gaze, unable to meet his eyes. It was yet another side of her that she never let out.

"Well, that depends. If you're used to whatever just happened, then it must it happen a lot, right?" He asked with a concerned scowl. He couldn't see how the reaction Darlingpaw had to him was in any way healthy, and being as insensitive as he sometimes was, failed to understand why someone might want to overcome such things alone. "Does Amberbird know?" Maybe if she was already receiving some kind of treatment, he could let everything go...
When he has lost all hope, all object in life, man becomes a monster in his misery.
Darlingpaws ears pulled back against her head, couldn't he just agree and leave it at that. "Amberbird knows what he needs to know and nothing more." The medicine cat had still been an apprentice training when her and her siblings were brought to the clan so of course he had been informed of their past, but that was it. "You now knowing is already too much, as long as I don't drop my guard i'm usually fine." It was a great explanation as to why she didn't get on well with, well anyone. "It looks worse than it is, you really shouldn't think to much into it." Why was it she kept talking to him, letting her wall slip as if she had lost complete control of it.
Her eyes suddenly hardened and her shoulders squared. "I swear if you tell Amberbird even a sliver of what has happened today, i'll make sure you don't get a good nights sleep for as long as I am alive!" Of course she resorted to threats to try and keep the warrior silent.

Shieldheart's face screwed up at the threat for an instant before his expression took on a more cautionary look. "Now, hold on a second! I'm only trying to help," he said, and that was the truth. It was in his nature to want to protect others, and he gave his best effort to do that every time he could. Now was no exception. Maybe they'd had a rough first impression, but that didn't change anything. If possible, scaring her the way he did only made him want to help out more. "I get that you want to keep this stuff to yourself and just deal, okay? And you can pretend like it's nothing, but I'm not buying it. I'm not going to look the other way on this one."
When he has lost all hope, all object in life, man becomes a monster in his misery.
"No one asked for your help." She whispered the words, still loud enough though for Shieldheart to hear them. After shuffling her paws for a moment she decided to take a seat, her blue eyes trained on the tom just in case he mad any attempt to move closer to her. "You're as bad as Crownglass, daft tom doesn't know when to give up." Before now it had been easy for her to escape the attention of other, whether it be by scaring them off or by being so relentlessly stubborn they grew angry and annoyed and gave up. It seemed that her mentor, Crownglass wasn't the only overly determined feline in Fallclan when it came to getting on Darlingpaws nerves, now it seemed Shieldheart fell into that category as well. "Why are you so keen on trying to 'help' me? It wont matter in the end anyway."
Post by Flurryofstars on Aug 21, 2020 0:53:11 GMT -5
Even if Darlingpaw didn't appreciate Crownglass's determination to help her, it made Shieldheart feel better that he wasn't the only one trying. The apprentice seemed very stubborn and rude, and some cats would walk away from a lot less. He decided not to answer her first question because the why behind his actions was never something he liked to think about. "And if I don't help you? I just walk away right now and act like this never happened. Would that matter?" he sighed. "Just let me try." Then after a pause, he brightened up to add, "I won't tell anyone else."
Her ears flattened against her skull, her threat had pretty much failed and now he was threatening her even if it hadn't been his intention to do so. "It wouldnt matter to me if you walked away, but I feel like you know that already." She paused and took a breath weighing what few options she had. "You know this is blackmail right? You're using something personal that you know I want kept hidden, so I'm just supposed to accept it or I get burnt." This really had become quite the mess for her, she wanted to refuse but she knew she couldn't if it meant keeping his mouth closed.
With a final glare in his direction she nodded. "I wont stop you, but dont expect me to treat you any different when we are around others. I dont trust promises, and honestly I dont have much reason to trust you, you said you wont tell anyone so I'll go along with it for now but if I find out you've blabbed to some cat dont show up in front of me again." Her tone was serious, she had little room in her life for wishy washy, she wouldnt tolerate a liar. With all of that said she got back to her paws and looked at the ground before drawing a line in the dirt with one of her claws, taking two steps back from it and sitting down again. "That's as close as you can get, and dont sneak up on me, ever." She couldn't risk what happened earlier happening again if she was going to let him play his game in trying to 'help her.
