Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
(SpotConsuela, since Dovewish left Lightstep's offered to help the medicine cats on a few occassions and had started sneaking poppy seeds from their plants, making Softpelt and Fawnheart assume animals were eating their crops they started stocking up more. But now Lightstep's desperate enough for the numbness and sleepiness poppy seeds grant that she's now gone so far to take from the stores)
Softpelt paused as she looked over the poppy seed supplies. There were a few seeds missing, she began to paw through some of the other neat little piles to check but yes, there were several poppy seeds missing from the supplies.
"Fawnheart?" Softpelt meowed turning to her fellow medicine cat. "Have you had to give any of the poppy seeds anyone recently? There's several missing." The fluffy white she cat said glancing at the pile again to count it once more to make sure she's right.
"I gave two to Finchwatcher yesterday but that's all that I can recall" Fawnheart responded with concern, coming up beside Softpelt to look at their inventory and see for herself.
Softpelt nodded. "Yes, yes, I remember that, but compared to the amount we had yesterday, including what you gave Finchwatcher, there's 4 missing," Softpelt meowed. "I know it's been unusual us having such a large stock of poppy seeds what with some creature eating them off our plants lately, but I don't understand where they could've gone..." The older fluffy white she cat meowed sounding distressed. "I certainly hope whatever's been making off with them in the territory hasn't somehow gotten into our den."
"I hope not either. We should also keep an eye on any cat looking more sleepy than usual. Especially kits. Poppy seeds are sweet and kits love things that taste sweet. Let's just hope no kits, or cats, are sneaking in and taking some as well." Fawnheart commented, unconvinced it was just some animal. "I don't see it being a creature, though. I haven't smelled any unusual scents or any signs of rubbishing. You'd think if it was an animal, it would leave the den pretty disasterous in search of the poppy seeds. Whatever or whoever is taking it, is knowing where it is."
A deep throat clearing interrupted the conversation as Thistlestar stood tall at the entrance of the medicine cat den. In his jaws, he carried two squirrels which danged by their tails. Thistlestar awaited the looks of both she-cats before stepping forward, dropping the warm bodies down near the medicine cats' feet, careful not to overstep into their domain, half out of respect and the other half out of personal discomfort. The potent scents of herbs always made the leader uneasy. It reminded him of illness and death.
Despite the morbid thoughts going through his head, the leader's expression was calm and collected. "I asked if anyone had seen either of you come out of your dens at all today and no one could recall seeing you two out for lunch." Thistlestar started with a small smile "I figured you guys were busy today and neglected your stomachs for duty, so I personally brought you food to eat." He nudged the corpses slightly before turning back to the medicine cats.
Softpelt had been about to respond to Fawnheart when she heard Thistlestar enter. "Oh, thank you Thistlestar," She meowed graciously dipping her head though her blue eyes had a worried look. "Thistlestar did any kits wander into the medicine cat den while Fawnheart and I were out earlier? Fawnheart was checking on some of the crops we're growing while I had to get some marigold for our stores. We're worried some cat may have gotten into our herbs."
Fawnheart's concerned expression melted into pure gratefulness. "Thistlestar, you are a life saver! I had forgotten how hungry I was! Thank you!" She purred, giving off her relief through her voice.
The responses from the she-cats caused a small smile to soften the leader's naturally stern features, but the smile left as quickly as it came as Softpelt's stranger inquiry materialized in the air around them.
"No, I went to visit myself for a short time shortly after you both left camp." He spoke up, puzzlement tinted his words as he spoke, staring back at both cats as he recounted "Most were napping away and the few that were still awake were playing in the Kitten arena, with a queen watching over them." He paused for a moment, thinking about the medicine cat's words "Why? Is there herbs missing that we should be concerned about?" He inquired, his tone growing serious as he took in the medicine cats' expressions, looking for any additional concern from them.
Softpelt sighed pawing the prey Thistlestar had brought close to her. "We've had cases of our poppy seeds getting plucked from the plants a lot lately, so we've been keeping our stores well stocked. And well, some are now gone, and neither Fawnheart or myself gave them to anyone."
Fawnheart's expression once again returned to being concerned. She let out a sigh. "Unfortunately, it is true. It's quite concerning. Luckily, poppy seeds aren't life threatening as long as several aren't being taken at once. But, its still nonetheless concerning that someone or something is taking our poppy seeds. Who know what they might take next? If it's some kits, we need to know immediately so that they aren't daring each other to take something more deadly." She recalled a time that she saved a kit from eating a death berry.
"Poppy seeds?..." The leader echoed under his breath, his mind racking through the few herbs he knew, but his memories failed him as he remained confused on the topic until Fawnheart spoke up. The leader's brows furrowed deeply with concern as he listened on. "I am sure it couldn't have been the kits, especially if the lot went missing today, but I will have a word with the queens to make sure of it." He meowed deeply, his gaze falling briefly to the ground in deep thought before proceeding "How long has it been since you notice the poppy seeds being plucked from our territory?"
Softpelt tilted her head thinking it over. "I'd say since the half moon it's been happening." She noted. "We were starting to run a little low and normally before we started seriously stockpiling Fawnheart and I would just take a warrior or apprentice with to help us gather herbs if we both couldn't go get herbs together. Fawnheart and I realized around then we weren't getting as many seeds as we should've and that's when it became apparent something was taking them."
Fawnheart nodded in agreement. "We've been very stingy about how many poppy seeds we give out because of this. It is beginning to become a problem. We will need to be stock piling soon. Within the next moon or so, green leaf will be coming to an end and we will have to begin stocking herbs for leafbare. We can't do so if herbs are being taken."
Thistlestar thought hard on the report being given to him, his mind wrapping around all the possibly situations that could branch from this issue. "If we are indeed in need of poppy seeds, I'll ask one of you to take a warrior and travel to Summerclan. If they would be so kind as to spare us some poppy seeds, enough to give you guys a comfortable supply until ours regrow. Let them know we can offer them herbs of our own or prey in exchange." He ordered thoughtfully, finding himself sighing internally with relief for the strong alliance that had been solidified with Summerclan over the past few moons. He was sure there would be no issue in the deal. "Find a new place to hide the poppy seeds for now." He spoke on, looking at Softpelt in particular "I can offer my own den for a temporary spot, at least until we can figure out who is taking the seeds."
Silence fell on Thistlestar as he thought deeply on the troubling situation. "We should investigate quietly on his matter." He added quietly, his gaze bouncing from each medicine cat. "We should start bu investigating those who have been assisting you in the past moon with herb collection, or at least those with the knowledge of the poppy seed supply we have in our territory as well as those who have recently been treated with poppy seeds."
"I suppose that's the best plan we've got. We appreciate your help, Thistlestar." Fawnheart responded, giving a polite dip of her head. Her concerned expression once again melted into relief. "I'm so glad that we have a solid plan. I wonder who would be willing to go with us to Summerclan territory."
Thistlestar gave a short nod to Fawnheart. "I trust you to pick a warrior that you would feel most comfortable traveling with." His graze trailed off for a moment in thought before returning to the medicine cat "I would ask that the Trusted and Viperstream remain here; They have done well to over see the patrols and I would like that streak to continue."
The leader turned back to Softpelt, a more concerning look crossing his expression "In the mean time, I think we need to question those who have been assisting you in collecting herbs in this past month, in particular, those who know where our Poppy seed is being grown and harvested from. Is there any names that are coming to mind, from what either of you remember?"
Softpelt winced. "Inksplash always is happy to help. I always like to offer cats a chance to I appreciate the company. For poppy seeds... I can recall going with a few apprentices, Firefly and some of his siblings before they were promoted.. but outside our families... Lightstep was a frequent assistant." Softpelt recalled.
“I’ll ask Inksplash... but My daughter knows better, as would Fawnheart’s kits.” Softpelt murmured. “And Lightstep is smart she’d know better too... am I perhaps forgetting someone?” The white she cats eyes narrowed as she tried to think.
