"Hey Swiftpaw, haven't you heard?" When the apprentice exchange happened, Pineapplepaw immediately began "befriending" the new apprentices. Sure, they weren't gonna stay and it was more of her saying they were friends but that was not gonna stop her from getting them on her side and not Mintkit's. A cheeky smile adorned her face as she bumped into the other apprentice lightly. "I heard Princepaw is gonna be in the area to meet her fans. You have to come with me." Princepaw, Dayclan apprentice and notable heart throb, rarely had the time to come to the Mountain Clans and visit her other fans. Word had passed through the grapevine that she was making a series of special trips, and Fallclan was the first. How lucky. It quickly became news in the apprentice den, and Pineapplepaw was sure she wouldn't be the only one going. "You gotta come see her, she's so dreamy." Pineapplepaw wouldn't have given Swiftpaw the chance to say no anyway.
She resisted the urge to roll her eyes and shoo the other apprentice away from her. Ever since she'd joined the new clan the other apprentice had been hanging around her and the others, and it was getting under her skin; she was so peppy and bossy and she never seemed to get the hint that Swiftpaw wanted to be alone. She didn't want to leave her clan and go somewhere else, and she was impatiently waiting for her return to SwiftClan. The nomadic clan didn't care much about their apprentices, and she was left with a sense of freedom that was sorely lacking now.
But as much as she loathed to admit it only to herself, she couldn't drive away Pineapplepaw. It was lonely here without most of her family and it helped to have someone around, anyone, so she reluctantly stuck by the other apprentice for now. Even when she had more ridiculous notions like this. Why Swiftpaw would care about this Princepaw was beyond her, but it didn't look like she was getting out of it so easily either.
"How dreamy can she be?" Swiftpaw replied skeptically. "You really want to go to meet her? If you wanted to meet an apprentice, well, look around you. We're no different."

“Oh come on! You're only saying that cause you haven't met her!” Pineapplepaw nudged into her, the golden tabby purring as she continued. “Okay, like you all are cool and all. But none of you are Princepaw. No one's as charming. And that's not a drag, it's a fact we all have to live with.” For as much as Swiftpaw would complain, she was still walking with Pineapplepaw and that was all that mattered. “Besides, it's better to sneak out and do something else other than be with Grayjack, Annoyingbird and Bijou.”
Was that an insult? Swiftpaw twitched her ear. It didn't feel intentionally offensive, but still, Pineapplepaw had just openly admitted she wasn't very charming. Well... that wasn't news to Swiftpaw, charm and social skills had never been her strong suit, so she left the jibe slide for now.
"I suppose anything is better than spending more time with them," Swiftpaw allowed. "I thought my clanmates were a pain to deal with, but those three take it to a whole new level. My ears hurt listening to them sometimes." That was only a slight exaggeration: the constant bickering could be physically painful.

Was it an insult? Pineapplepaw wouldn't tell. She tended to talk without thinking it through, but they could almost be considered well crafted enough that she puts too much effort into it. Still, it wasn't a bad thing. Cause she also said she couldn't reach Princepaw's level of charm. And Pineapplepaw at least thought of herself as somewhat charming.
"Exactly. I don't know what Hystericstar was thinking. Those three make my squabbles with Icefrost, mentor, look like nothing." Really, she figured this was a way to get them and the apprentices away for a while. But still, she learned now that Icefrost would never be as much of a stick in the mud as Jayjack. "But you guys get to move around all the time. That seems nice. Better than being stuck in some no name place like here."
Swiftpaw scoffed. "He probably thought the same thing as Chimerastar: that he could just pretend the apprentices don't exist and they would take care of themselves. He just didn't count on getting as many of us as he did." Figures that she'd be sent to the other clan that didn't want to deal with their presence. It had worked out decently, she had Pineapplepaw now and at least that was something, but she couldn't help wondering what it was like to be in a real clan. Somewhere that was teaching their exchange apprentices, exposing them to their ways of life like they should be. Swiftpaw liked the freedom SwiftClan allowed her, but she wanted to try a structured life, just once.
"It's not," she admitted next, disgust creeping into her tone. "Don't get me wrong, it's nice seeing all of the different sights, but it's exhausting. As soon as you understand the territory, you move on somewhere else. It's a mess. I was looking forward to learning how to fish in our old territory, but we moved before we got the chance, and the pond is... gross."

"Pfft, exactly. It's like they don't care about us till we become warriors. What's their problem? Ugh. I heard Summerclan got swamped though. I bet Ratstar is actually doing something with them though." Pineapplepaw sighed as the pair climbed up the moor. "Eww, that sucks. I wish I could help, but I'm a terrible fisher. They had to pull me out of the river after a fish dragged me down. Just don't tell anyone you heard that. Oh, we're here." Pineapplepaw confessed, her paws like thunder as she ran down the hill. A small crowd had gathered at the bottom, just on the outside of where the Mountain Clans gathered.
Swiftpaw smiled. The thought of a fish - in her mind, a tiny minnow - dragging down the apprentice was hilarious. She heard it was common for cats to fall in, though she had never been given the chance. She was getting ready to tell Pineapplepaw that when they arrived at the gathering, and she stopped to look over the crowd of cats. She had expected only one or two cats would have come, not this many. Who was this Princepaw that she was so popular a crowd gathered around her?
"Which one is Princepaw?" she asked, glancing over at Pineapplepaw and taking a half-step back. "There's a lot of cats down there, it's looking pretty crowded. Why don't I stay up here while you go down?"
Post by strawberrycupid on Aug 3, 2020 23:58:49 GMT -5
Sure, Swiftpaw could think of it as a minnow. But apparently the one she went for was a salmon. And now she hasn't wanted to eat fish for a week. Which was hell cause she loved fish till now. "I feel for those fans that got stuck in Swift, it's quite a walk." Pineapplepaw purred, a smile on her face that said she didn't feel bad for them at all. When Swiftpaw suggested staying up, Pineapplepaw tsked and put a paw on her shoulder that threatened a shove. "Oh come on. If you stay up here, she'll call you down anyway. Besides, you'll miss out on your gift." In an act of grace, she let go before continuing her way down.
Princepaw, meanwhile, was in her element. She couldn't remember how long she spent preparing for this trip, weaving enough flower crowns and pendants to make any clan jealous. "Ah hello, my dear. Your smile is beautiful today. Why I'd walk through hell and back just for it to bless me again. ... what? all the way from Swiftclan? Ah, thank you so much, my princess. Here, a crown for you, though it pales in comparison to your beauty."
Swiftpaw sighed. If Pineapplepaw was right, staying up here would only draw unwanted attention, so she followed her friend down the hill and into the crowd below.
She kept her head down as they entered the group, marginally avoiding eye contact with anyone. All she needed to do was blend in and then last long enough to exhaust Pineapplepaw’s curiosity. It shouldn’t be too difficult; with the number of cats here to receive flower crowns, she doubted Princepaw would notice her either.

Even if Swiftpaw wished it, Princepaw was nothing if not observant. Her slow walk and greet around the circle finally led her to Pineapplepaw first. The golden tabby bounced on her toes as Princepaw came around.
"You've really drawn a crowd, haven't you?" Pineapplepaw purred, looking around at all the apprentices. Even if she was a fan, she couldn't help but be a little jealous of it.
"Hm? I suppose so. When looking at the stage from the audience, it's easy to think one is just a member of it instead of an individual. But when I look out, I see all of my princesses, each beautiful in their own right. An actor like me is nothing without the support of all of you." Princepaw purred, her gaze bouncing around to several of the other apprentices in the area. Some may say she got it from her grandmother, Glowstar, but she could look at you like you were the only one in the world. Even speaking to everyone here, it still felt like each word was directed at you specifically. Princepaw could make anyone feel special, and that was definitely a part of her charm.
"Oh stop. You're making me blush." Pineapplepaw looked away, only a hint of such a blush peeking through her golden fur. She purred to herself before looking back, almost awestruck with the other apprentice in front of her.
"I cannot help but tell the truth, Pineapplepaw," Princepaw said with a wink, quickly rifling through her bag before pulling out a pendant with a beautiful pink peony in the center. She gently placed it over Pineapplepaw's head before pulling it around her neck, so the peony sat between her neck and her shoulder. "Peonies mean bashful, or to wish for a happy life. I hope your life is as wonderful as you make mine. Might I ask who your friend is here?"
She knew she would have to meet Princepaw sooner or later, she was just hoping to delay it a while by hiding in the crowd. All hope of going unnoticed vanished when Pineapplepaw was spotted: there was no way her friend wasn't going to sell her out. She hadn't moved far from the other she-cat but took a few steps closer anyway, just as Princepaw finished fishing out the peony pendant. It was a strange gift; Swiftpaw had never seen anything like it. Maybe it was common in the other clans, but SwiftClan cats didn't have their own possessions, and there was no point for them to make gifts like flower crowns that they would have to carry from home to home.
Swiftpaw didn't have another chance to consider the pedant before Princepaw was asking about her. The black-and-white she-cat tilted her head back a little defiantly, feeling out of place here more than ever. "Swiftpaw, of SwiftClan." Sometimes she hated the way that made her sound - what kind of arrogant cat shared her name with her clan? Whoever heard of Sunpaw of SunClan? - but her mother had named the litter before the clan ever existed.
"You don't need to waste one of ... those," she gestured vaguely toward the bag of crowns and pendants, "on me. I'm just here to keep Pineapplepaw out of trouble."

“Hey. No you’re not.” Pineapplepaw was in too good of a mood to give Swiftpaw too much crap. She bumped her shoulder against the other apprentice’s, purring like a mad man. “She’s visiting Fall for the Apprentice Exchange.” She responded happily, though her tail was flicking around behind her.
“Ah well welcome to the mountain clans. It quite beautiful up here though it doesn’t compare to you, my rose.” Princepaw chirped, a couple of gasps lit up behind her but she payed them no heed. “Oh, but I have plenty. Please, at least let me give you one. Even if it's fleeting, I want it to enrich your life some like you do mine. Here." Compared to finding Pineapplepaw's, it took her less time to find one for Swiftpaw. And sure enough, she held to her word. Bright red roses had been plucked from thorns and weaved into softer pieces of grass to make a flower crown. Princepaw didn't ask again, placing the crown on Swiftpaw's head. "Roses. I needn't tell you what they mean. They are the purest flower of love, and I hope the memories of your time here will stick with you like mine will for you." Princepaw purred, winking at the two before heading off to the next section of cats.
"Oh. My. Starclan. You did not just get the red rose crown! That's insane. I'm so jealous." Pineapplepaw could barely keep her feet on the ground, her tone light and playful as she sat down again, peony necklace settling.
Swiftpaw arched a brow, not so easily swayed by flattery. Maybe the compliment would have meant more if she wasn't surrounded by a bunch of cats getting the exact same treatment. Were the others really so impressed by this? Princepaw was easy on the eyes and it was nice to be charmed, but the crowd was so offputting. Swiftpaw didn't enjoy being in large groups of cats, especially when they were all fawning over one simple apprentice.
Her eyes widened slightly at the sight of the crown. Without understanding why the other cats seemed so shocked by the display, she couldn't help admiring it. It was soft and beautiful, very light on her head. It was as pointless as the gifts she had given every other apprentice here, just plants bound together, just dead stems woven into an arrangement for her to waste her time carrying about. The flowers would shrivel up now that they weren't on the step, and if it fell off it would probably break. There was no practical reason for her to do anything with the crown except throw it in the river at the end of the night.
But it was hers. And to a cat that had nothing, not even a nest of her own (she shared with her brother), it meant something. Maybe it was going to fall apart eventually, but for now, it belonged to her alone.
Swiftpaw looked up to see Princepaw had already gone. "Thanks," she called briefly after her. Then she turned back to Pineapplepaw, frowning a little at her excitement. "What's the big deal? You got a flower necklace too."

Princepaw flicked her tail in response, but it might have been missed in the throng. She was almost done though, and then the real show could start.
"Oh, right. This is your first time. Keep forgetting." Pineapplepaw finally sat down, tongue sticking out the side of her mouth to emphasize the silliness. "True, and like every flower is unique and all that. But! Dayclan doesn't get roses that often, let alone red ones. Princepaw has to go out of her way to find those roses and make one, so it's a pretty big deal. The other girls who would get them were sometimes asked out on dates with Princepaw. Ooooh, I'm so excited for you. If she does, I'll need all the deets when you get back."
Swiftpaw snorted. "Don't get your hopes up. She doesn't want to go on a date with me, Pineapplepaw." The notion itself was ridiculous. She didn't even know about Princepaw before her, and she still wasn't convinced she wanted to be here. The crown was a nice gift, sure, but she could see through the thin attempt to shift her mood.
"She was probably trying to bribe me into showing some gratitude. She saw that I was new around here, and she thought that she could impress me into being as smitten as the rest of you. Maybe she thought it would look bad if I left here and told other cats she wasn't worth the hype. It was a political move."

"Hey, you never know." Pineapplepaw laughed, "That sounds more like something I would do than Princepaw. She's a lot more... honest, about her intentions." The yellow she-cat laughed and rubbed the back of her head awkwardly. She didn't really wanna tell Swiftpaw that Princepaw... was not the brightest crayon in the box. Not that it looked like they were gonna be waiting long. The last few cats filtered in and everyone began to settle down.
Swiftpaw doubted that, but her only answer was a skeptical look. "What do we do now? We've gotten our flowers." She fiddled with the rose crown, brushing her paw over it ever so lightly. It didn't look like the other cats were preparing to clear out, though; they were settling down for whatever came next, though she couldn't begin to guess. "Is she giving a speech?"

"Uh, sort of. Just sit and watch." Pineapplepaw lightly tapped Swiftpaw on the shoulder, though at one point got her face too. As the crowd quieted down, no one stepped forward to set the scene. This was truly a one cat show. Normally, Princepaw had a helper or two, but no one was committed to coming out to the mountain like she was.
"Good day to all my darlings, and welcome to my show. I'm Princepaw of Dayclan, and I cannot thank you for being here enough. Today, I'll be performing a classic; Romeo and Juliet." Loud applause erupted around her. You could swear she blushed, but she lifted a paw as everyone fell silent again. "I pray you'll enjoy the show from the bottom of your hearts. Even the smallest brush against your hearts is better than an eternity alone. Please enjoy."
What followed was a myriad of monologues. Really, most cats didn't know what the story was about. But they were set to cheer for whatever Princepaw said. Even in the bright light, a stark contrast to the scenes she played, it was easy to get wrapped up in her narration. Every word had its purpose, practiced, and eloquent. Princepaw owned the stage, moving around the group like water. When they pleaded their undying love, she could stare right through you, talk right to you. It was magical to where you could barely notice the time passing. That was the kind of performer Princepaw was.
"Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavory guide! Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on The dashing rocks thy sea-sick weary bark! Here's to my love!" Her voice was strong, barely a crack in it after the hours performing. She leaned down with a flourish, pretending to drink before lifting her head dramatically. "O, true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss, I die." And Princepaw fell over, and the silence held for a few moments before the whole crowd burst into tears.
The whole crowd burst into tears... except for Swiftpaw.
Well, maybe there were a few tears glistening in the corner of her eyes, but that was just because she was tired and her eyes were dry from watching the performance. She wiped them away with the back of her paw, adamant that the performance had not affected her so much. She had never seen anything like that before; no cat in her clan was so theatrical, most of their cats didn't have a drop of anything interesting enough to speak of.
"Okay, that was kind of impressive," she admitted gruffly to Pineapplepaw. "I can see why you like to come down here." By no means was she swept off her paws like everyone else here, but she could see the appeal.
