(If you want to do a darker story arch I could have Ratnest slip in some Primal Instinct combat moves during training or be more rough with Greypaw. Or they can have a normal mentor apprentice bond, whatever you would like! ^-^) Whitemuzzle
Ratnest's life had drastically changed in the past moons. Before he was a part of the murderous Primal Instinct gang hunted down by Renegade Regime for his killing spree. Now he had found his true love with Flamingstar and was a devoted warrior of NightClan. Life had become so domestic lately that he had been given an apprentice to train. He had an apprentice back in Primal Instinct once, but NightClan's training was vastly different from Primal Instinct's. Every combat technique was far more honorable with less rage and more grace.
Striding through the entrance of the apprentices den he gently nudged Greypaw awake. Ratnest was a smallish tom like Greypaw. He had spiky black fur that definitely looked like a rat nest and two scars. One scar ran along his shoulder and the other looked deep, almost branded into him that ran between where his head met his neck. But most notably was his half white face, it looked like a half moon. It was well known that he was let into NightClan by Flamingstar and even more well known that Bleakwind had mockingly called him Ratnest when he first arrived making the name stick.

(How about we do something a little edgier than regular training but I'd like them to have a good bond together too.)
Greypaw was excited he finally had a mentor but his happiness was tempered by the fact it was Ratsnest. He had heard rumors about the leader's mate and not were all good. He seemed alright now but what if the stories he heard about him were true? Would he, himself, eventually turn out to be a feared, dark warrior because of Ratsnest's training? A part of him shivered at the thought but another part was thrilled. He fell asleep in his new nest with dreams of greatness but a dark shadow seemed to follow him around.
"Huh?" he mewed as he felt a paw nudging him. But then the fog of sleep started to lift from his mind when he saw Ratsnest standing beside him. "Oh! I'm ready," he whispered as he rose to his feet. His mouth gaped in a wide yawn putting to question the veracity of his statement.
(Yeah that sounds great! I'm going to infer Ratnest already gave Greypaw a tour of the territory so I'm going to just start off with them training, but if you're not okay with that just let me know and I'll change directions!)
Ratnest let out a soft huff of laughter at how easily Greypaw could get up. Then again this was nothing like how he was trained as a kid. Usually when a cat became six moons old in the Regime they were moved to their desired aspiration, some forcing them to get up far before dawn, working more than sleeping. Here though everything was so much more relaxed, it felt like a gentler environment, one that maybe he wouldn't have made so many mistakes in.
"Good evening Greypaw," He said before leading the apprentice out into camp.
He had a small suspicion that Flamingstar gave him an apprentice to test his fatherly skills with her upcoming litter. That alone was motivation enough for him to want to succeed.
"I was thinking we could go work on some combat out in the field. I bet it'll also aid you in hunting too," Ratnest said confidently.

(It's fine )
"Good evening," Greypaw replied. When he heard that this evening's instruction would be battle training, it snapped the last vestiges of sleepiness out of him. "Really? That sounds great!" Since he had a smaller build than many toms his own age, he wanted to know how to defend himself. It seemed he usually lost the play battles in the nursery with kits his own age. The larger kits almost always seemed to pin him down easily. Perhaps Ratnest, since he's on the smaller side, would know some methods and tricks to compensate for lack of size. "I can't wait to learn!"
"Of course," Ratnest said confidently, "Our neighboring clans are maniacs, you need to know how to stand your ground and intimidate because if you don't they will." He said, his fur spiking up at the thought of outsiders. He still remembered when his leader in Primal Instinct forced him to walk back with Foxbane and face his execution in SunClan. In fairness, it hadn't been for nothing, he had intentionally made DayClan suspect that SunClan had turned on them. He did it for Flamingstar and NightClan.
"Especially when DayClan and SunClan team up on us all the time, none of it is fair," He explained as they began to near the training field, "That's why I need to teach you extensive combat moves. They don't play fair so you need to know how to adapt with who your opponent is. Is that part making sense so far?"

"Yes, I think so. It sounds reasonable," Greypaw replied. He for one didn't want to be pushed around anymore, not that he was bullied or anything. That was not the case. Overall life in the nursery had been pleasant. He was just tired of not knowing how to defeat opponents larger than he was.
"Since DayClan and SunClan help each other, are we friends with MoonClan?" It made sense in his mind that this might be the case.
"No," Ratnest replied sternly, "NightClan doesn't need anyone's help. We don't need to suck up to a clan like DayClan does after they get bullied. When we get bullied we bite back. You also need to promise to never trust a SunClan cat. They take prisoners and brainwash them into their clans, I hear the ones that don't behave are used as fighting targets for the higher ups to train with," He said with disgust.
"Now the most important thing I'm going to teach you is how to sweep the legs out from a cat. We're low to the ground, which makes this move much easier for us with the right training. You'll need to slide your leg comfortable across all limbs with enough force to knock a cat down. This takes balance and core strength so we'll go back to this move throughout your training until you perfect it. Making a cat lose balance and striking fast as a viper will be the best move I will teach you," He promised.

Greypaw was horrified to hear how heartless the SunClan cats were. How could any cat treat another like that? "No, I'll never trust any SunClan cat," he replied earnestly, placing his right paw over his heart. "Ever." He was proud of his NightClan heritage, especially how they stick up for themselves.
He listened intently as Ratnest explained the battle move. Excitement coursed through him as he imagined being able to perform such an awesome sounding move. And it's the best battle move and he'd be learning it first! He especially liked the part about 'striking fast as a viper'. Vipers were feared and they were deadly. "Please show me," he mewed eagerly, eyes gleaming. "I want to learn!"
"I'm glad," Ratnest said listening to Greypaw. Nothing would tear down his world more if something happened to his apprentice especially if it was with SunClan. He lived in Primal Instinct, but at least they never psychologically manipulated or tried to cover their corruption. Being a neighbor to SunClan was nothing short of despicable.
"Okay so I'm going to do a mock demonstration of how to knock someone off their feet," Ratnest said.
Stepping closer to Greypaw he continued, "I'm going to very slowly drag my paw across your leg and you'll just move your paws out of the way as I do so. This will be a slow motion movement to show you how the move is supposed to look," He explained.
Ratnest lowered himself, it was almost a hunters crouch the way he stayed just above the grass line, yet remained incredibly low. He moved his back leg underneath himself for support before sweeping the leg closest to Greypaw across his legs very slowly in order to not actually forced his apprentice down to the ground. That wouldn't be useful if he couldn't see the movement.
After Ratnest swept his leg past all of Greypaw's legs he stood up fully, "Alright, that's the move, so how about you try to imitate it, be as rough as you need to. This isn't an attack with claws after all so I can take it."
(You can reply and then my next reply could be mid training to where Greypaw's gotten the handle on the move and then Ratnest is trying to teach him to be more ruthless? Sorry I love time skips so much. We don't have to time skip if you don't want to though, we could just continue the thread xD)

(Time skipping is fine )
Greypaw watched with intense interest as Ratnest demonstrated the move. He moved his feet out of the way slowly, matching the speed of his mentor. "Wow! I can see how that could really work," he meowed. He felt energized by his excitement.
Then he tried the move slowly at first copying what Ratnest did. He was careful to keep his claws retracted although he instinctively wanted to extend them. Then each additional time he tried the move he went faster. It was difficult at first to keep his balance but by the time he stopped, he felt he was getting better at not toppling over.

Ratnest locked eyes with Greypaw, it was another training session, lately Greypaw had been getting the hang of the move. However he wanted to be sure Greypaw could react even if his opponent was quick on their paws. Treating it like a real battle Ratnest was quick on his paws as he hurled himself at Greypaw with a lightning speed. In real battle no one was going to be easy on him, so although this training was difficult he wanted to test that Greypaw was ready for battle should one happen.

Greypaw was surprised at the speed of Ratnest's attack. It didn't give him time at all to plan a counter move. He simply reacted by dropping low and trying to sidestep but he wasn't fast enough. He felt his mentor make contact and then he was rolled to the ground. Chagrined, he continued the roll until he was up on his feet again facing Ratnest. Crouching, he narrowed his eyes as he waited for his next attack.
Ratnest came at him, his tail lashing to the left in sync as his claws lashed out from his right front leg. He did this as he closed in on the apprentice to prevent any quick move Greypaw could use from going unscathed. The tails movement was so in the heat of battle it would be difficult to process if that was a tail or a paw. Finally as he came into range of Greypaw, Ratnest went low, tackling into Greypaw's stomach and throwing the apprentice onto the ground. His paw, slipping around the back of Greypaw's head to prevent his head from smacking on the ground. "Normally the force of this move from grabbing the lower part of a cat leaves them stunned. This gives enough time for a killing blow." He said it so casually like it were any other battle move he had taught Greypaw. He had taught him how to fight, but killing hadn't really been a topic until now.

The trick worked. Greypaw's eyes were attracted to his mentor's tail as he flicked it to the left so that he missed the attack from the right paw. Instantly he found himself on the ground with Ratnest on top of him. He understood how this attack could stun a cat. He would have been if his mentor hadn't cushioned his head. But the next words stunned him where the attack hadn't. He had believed killing enemies like foxes or badgers was fine but other cats? Was that alright? Suddenly he became aware how vulnerable a position he was in and how easy it would have been for an enemy to kill him. He was glad it was Ratnest and not some enemy who had attacked him. "I see," he meowed. "But is it alright to kill another cat?"
"Of course," Ratnest said with confidence, but his tone was darker, "Warriors don't have to kill to win a battle, but they still can and should. Before when I was the worst version of myself in the Regime everyone hesitated to kill me. But I hadn't hesitated to kill their family. They should have killed me because I hadn't learned my lesson and I did my horrible things. Not everyone deserves to live, remember that. Because if you believe otherwise it will haunt your heart when you do have to kill someone," He promised him.
Ratnest stepped off of his apprentice, "I'd like you to tackle me using the same move, if you can't stop my head from slamming on the ground, that's fine. Remember to unbalance the lower end of the cat so that their front legs and head collapse to the ground first."

"Oh, okay," Greypaw said as he pulled himself up from the ground. His mind was on what Ratnest had just said about killing other cats. Perhaps it wasn't always a bad thing to kill another cat. Like he said, some cats don't deserve to live. But what about his mentor? He just stated that he, himself, should have been killed. But if he had been, he wouldn't be his mentor right now. Greypaw looked up to his mentor with a type of awe toward his warrior prowess and hoped to emulate him one day. If the Regime had killed him, he'd never have had the privilege of knowing Ratnest. How awful would that have been!
He backed up a few steps and watched Ratnest. "But how, in the heat of battle, do you know if a cat deserves to live or not?" Then he added quickly, "I want to be a great warrior like you. I want to be the best I can be to help defend NightClan from all enemies. If that includes killing, well..." His voice trailed off. He wanted to say he was willing to do so but he just couldn't just now. Maybe later he could.
"There are worse things than death Greypaw," Ratnest said a bit too sternly, before breathing harshly out of nose as he rubbed the side of his face in thought, "I come from the Revolution Groups, they play by a different set of rules and soon enough you're going to realize that the worlds changing. Remember when the Revolution Groups used to be the only ones who didn't follow the warrior code? Now SunClan and MoonClan don't either. When every clan followed the same code that they don't have to kill there was less carnage. Now look at how things operate, they dragged me from my home and wanted to publicly execute me in front of their clan. You shouldn't live in a world like this and if the world was even remotely safe I'd lie to you and say you didn't have to kill. But it's not safe and you're going to go out in a battle field someday and fight some unfair battles so you can either learn to play dirty or play by the rules and see where that gets you. That's the cold reality and I'm sorry that's the one we're living in, but it's the truth," Ratnest promised his apprentice.

"Wow, I never realized that before," Greypaw replied. No one had ever told him the things Ratnest just did. Of course he knew vaguely about the stuff cats did outside of NightClan but he had never heard how really bad things were in those places. "It sounds like we in NightClan are the only cats with our heads on straight. I don't understand how others could live the way they do." He looked up into the sky then back down again at his mentor. "Alright then, if that's what I have to do to survive in this world, teach me how to kill." A cold shiver ran down his spine as he spoke those words but he figured he'd better learn to do this if he would stand a chance of living in this deadly world.
Greypaw took a step backward as he prepared himself for the attack he had just been shown, trying to remember everything Ratnest had done. He flicked his tail to the left and simultaneously lashed out with his right paw as he lunged toward his mentor. He came in low like he was shown.
"Good," Ratnest said, backing up naturally, noting the toms good form, "You have the strength now, go low and with all your force tackle me with everything you have in you, don't go easy, I need to know you're able to do this."

"Okay," Greypaw meowed feeling a little funny at attacking his mentor at full force. "If you say so." He took a deep breath and plunged right into his attack. He came in low just as he was told and crashed hard into Ratnest. Please StarClan, don't let me hurt him.
