Deputy, she still couldn't believe it. The ceremonies were over, the congratulations said, and most cats were beginning to retire for the evening. But Dawnmemories sat close to the freshkill pile, still processing everything. So much was about to change for her. Tomorrow she'd be organizing patrols, something she'd never imagined herself doing. The thoughts were most definitely going to keep her up tonight, so she decided to go for an evening walk. She stood and glanced around, hoping someone might offer to accompany her.
"Congratulations, deputy," he called as he fell in step beside her, his dark eyes amused as they met hers. "That's quite the honor. Are you sure you're up for the job? You'll be doing all of Ratstar's dirty work while he lazes around," he teased, his smile stretching into a full-blown cocky grin. Ragingspire had seen how lost she looked alone by the fresh-kill pile, and he was determined to cheer her up. It was an accomplishment to be chosen as deputy, and he wasn't going to let her forget that.

saw you replied and i was like "oh lawd here it come" and then it was my boi ragingspire <3
Dawnmemories managed a small laugh, "thank you, Ragingspire. I'm sure I'll survive, it's not Ratstar I'm nervous about." It was pretty much everyone else and one cat in particular, not that she was going to admit that. "I hope I'll loosen up about it," she added, voice betraying the depth of her nerves. She hadn't gone looking for this position and it still felt like a dream or a joke.
haha yeah, putting off soot/red happy reunion until the thread with ratstar is over cx
The bronze tom laughed knowingly. It wasn't difficult to guess who she was worried about; the tension between them was obvious after their patrol together. It was a miracle to him they hadn't shredded each other to pieces yet. "Yeah, I saw him go sulking off after the ceremony. How long until he comes back to camp, you think? I'd wager it'll be at least a day, he'll spend the night out there in the dirt." He patted her reassuringly with his tail. "Don't worry about it, you'll do a fine job. Ratstar would've have chosen you if he thought you'd screw it up."

"I didn't mean to upset him," she replied, sighing. "I didn't even expect to be chosen. He's done as much as I have, most cats have. That's why I feel undeserving." She'd looked for Sootstep in the crowd when it had been announced, it had been the only cat she'd looked for. It hadn't been surprising that he hadn't been there, but it had hurt her happiness. "We were just beginning to get along," she groaned, happy to be able to retreat from the clan and process her feelings. The territory felt much less stifling than camp and she let her paws steer them as they talked.
Ragingspire sighed, his smile slipping as he became more serious. "Look, deputy... I say this with all the love in the world, but you're being an idiot. You did nothing wrong, and you shouldn't let him get under your skin. That's his issue, not yours. You deserve this." The warrior looked usually grim. He may not know Dawnmemories that well, but he still wasn't going to let the trash warrior drag her down. "Why are you even wasting your time on him?"

lmao THE trash warrior, soot's new title
Dawnmemories paused, looking at Ragingspire as he spoke. She knew he was right, and she so badly wanted to shrug it off. But Sootstep had power over her, power to effect her moods more than she'd like. His opinion mattered to her. But Dawnmemories couldn't explain it, it made no sense. "I don't know," she replied honestly, ignoring the rush of defensiveness she felt for him. "it's always been like this. Even when we were kits, I just wanted Sootstep to be my friend. But he's always had quite a bit of animosity for me. Eventually it turned to rivalry and now we're like this, do we hate each other? Are we friends? I can't say."
"Maybe you should stop trying," he told her frankly, glancing sideways at her. "Look, maybe it's not my place to say, but stop wasting your efforts on him. If he's hated you since he was a kit he's not going to just change his mind, you know? Just let him be. There's always going to be a cat that hates you, but sometimes there's nothing you can do about it." Trying to add some levity to the discussion, he nudged her with his shoulder. "Guess how I know? Guess who hated me?"

Dawnmemories sighed, "its not like that. I don't follow him around desperately or anything, we were always pushed together. Pushed to compete, pushed to cooperate. Our entire lives we've been lumped together. I don't know why it started or why it continues. Since kithood, it's been Sootstep beside me. Neither one of us wanted it, either. That I can promise you." Their early frustration with all the patrols and training they'd been assigned to together had seemed to fade over time into just huffy resignation, but still their assignments continued. It occurred to her, suddenly, that if she wanted they'd never patrol together again. She was deputy now. She was the one making the patrols. The thought surprised her and the slight sadness she felt surprised her as well. Dawnmemories managed to pause her train of though, curious about Ragingspire's rival. "Could it have been Sootstep?" She asked, joking. "Really, I couldn't guess, you're pretty likable."
That was strange. He had never considered there was another cat pushing them together, but he couldn't imagine who would be doing it intentionally. Honestly, it would make more sense to him if they were just being a little overdramatic. "Oh, I know what you mean. I keep being pushed to patrol with the other warriors too. It's like man, we were just on patrol together last week, isn't there someone else in the clan? It's like I patrol with everyone once a moon." His whiskers twitched, and he laughed again. "No, but wouldn't it be a fun surprise if we shared a rival? But no, he's nowhere near my league. The first time I met my lovely Nemesis I was just a 'paw. My friend Crownglass was stuck in a tree after a fight with a fox, and I saved him. Ever since then Frostcloud hated me. Now, I know that makes it sound like she's jealous, but really she just loved me." Frostcloud had been the deputy when Sootstep and Dawnmemories were growing up -- and she'd been Sootstep's mentor.

"Frostcloud?" Dawnmemories ears pricked with interest, "like... Frostcloud, Frostcloud? Why on earth would she hate you over that? Or... love you?" She'd obviously known Frostcloud, mostly from kithood and her apprenticeship, and knew her only as a powerful, formidable cat and good mentor to Sootstep. It didn't make sense to her that she'd be to Ragingspire what Sootstep was to her. Though... it might explain where he learned such pettiness.
"Difference of opinion," he assured her with a grin. "She thought I was stuck up and entitled because my mother had babied me, which she wasn't that far off about," he admitted. Angelstar was a lovely mother and especially after his sister's death had been too generous with him. He was a rebellious young cat and he had been unstoppable. "She thought how I saved Crownglass was dangerous, but I only broke two of ribs, so honestly I consider it a victory. She knew I was a good fighter, though, and very fair."

Dawnmemories shook her head, absorbing the new information about her friend with surprise, "I had no idea you were ever like that. You seem remarkably well balanced." It was true. He'd seen her at her worst, right in the midst of her drama with Sootstep, and he'd always seemed assured and reasonable. That didn't seem like an overprotected brat that apparently breaks the ribs of cats he's rescuing.
Ragingspire smiled affectionately, glowing with warmth at her praise. "Well, sometimes we have to own up to our mistakes and do better," he said simply. "I was so angry, so far gone, I ran away from the clan and went on a journey with some other cats. Even they hated to have me around. And when I returned to the clan, I found out life went on without me. My little sister had a mate and a family of her own, my clan was dying, and my sister had... passed on. And I hadn't been there." Ragingspire swallowed, finding that even after all these moons, he still choked up to think of Dreamcatcher. "That was when I finally grew up."

Dawnmemories nodded, something in her eyes shone with understanding. Despite having been born and raised SummerClan, the she-cat felt as though she knew something about wandering. And about realizing life moves on without you. "You've rose up more nobly than most cats would," she assured him, voice warm with the conviction of it.
Ragingspire laughed a little, quietly. "You speak too soon. You barely know me." Some of his sadness was erased as he flashed her a grin. "Spend some more time with me and you'll change your mind."

"Hmm, I doubt spending time with you would change my mind, but we'll have to try it an see," Dawnmemories responded, surprising herself with her words. She didn't often plan to socialize, it wasn't really for her, but Ragingspire was nice and balanced and being around him made her feel more rational.
hmm, sounds like dawn MIGHT have a slight baby crush because ragingspire is normal around her xD
good because if they keep hanging out he might feel the same, just for the extra eventual heartbreak cx
Ragingspire glowed. "Just you wait, I'm going to change your entire worldview. After me, you'll look at every tom and think 'wow, he seems nice, is he secretly as terrible as Ragingspire?' The answer is no, by the way, nobody else is nearly as gorgeous as I am."

yeesss because dawn x soot were WAY too happy, so we gotta mix in some drama xDD
Dawnmemories laughed, shaking her head at him, "I'm not so sure you will, but you can try." Because she doubted he could be as terrible as he seemed to want to be. And perhaps a small part of her didn't want to believe another cat she liked was anything other than perfect.
"Oh, I will," he promised. Certainly, he wasn't as terrible as Sootstep, and the most terrible part of him was his rebellious streak and maybe his sense of humor. "We'll see. Another day. I'm done with you yet today... unless you have some place you need to be, deputy."
