"I'm glad you're so eager to learn about our territory," Firewind remarked. "It seems many apprentices find this part of their training boring but it's very important to know your territory well." He descended down from the cave and headed toward the hot springs.
As he walked he could feel the earth becoming warmer under his paws. "So as we travel you can tell me what you know about the warrior code." He was interested in seeing how much Giantpaw already knew.
Giantpaw half-listened to Firewind about good apprentice traits, but his mind was still on the cave. The tom threw a look back toward it over his shoulder, stumbling for a moment from not watching where he was going. He snapped his gaze forward again, looking over at the deputy to see if he'd noticed. If he had, perhaps he wasn't acknowledging it on purpose.
The two toms neared the hot springs. Giantpaw guessed it from the change in temperature of the ground. His attention was pulled back to his mentor as he was asked about the warrior code. "Well," he began, wondering if it was better to be truthful about his lack of knowledge or not. Giantpaw settled on yes because even if he didn't know, it certainly didn't make him an inferior cat. "I don't know the rules, Firewind. I just know that it's a bunch of stuff used to keep us in line."

"The Warrior Code isn't just a set of rules, it is our way of life. Following the Code will make you a better warrior," Firewind replied. The warm smell of the earth and water began to fill his senses. He was eager to visit the hot springs. They were a nice place to soothe tired paws. "I'll begin to teach them to you as we walk. The first Code is 'defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from other Clans, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle.' You'll meet cats from other clans at your first gathering so keep that one in mind."
"Oh, look. We're here." He padded over to a pool of water and stepped into the edge of it. The warm mud and water felt good on his feet. "Come on and give it a try. I know no other place like this one. All other waters are cold."
As they reached the water, Giantpaw took it all in with a wide-eyed gaze. His deputy stepping into the mud was a bit gross, but if Firewind was doing it, so could he. The apprentice walked forward and let his paws sink into the wet ground. It was pretty icky, and he yanked his paw back out, giving it a shake to knock off the muddy debris that clung. Still, the water felt much nicer than the ice cold stream they had crossed to get here.
"I don't expect to ever have a friend from another clan," Giantpaw said proudly before debating whether it was worth licking off the mud from between his toes. It would probably taste terrible, but the feeling of it caked on there was unpleasant. He absentmindedly added, "I bet you don't have any friends outside of NightClan either, Firewind."

"You're right, I don't," the orange tabby said as he washed the mud from his feet in the warm water. "But I do have several acquaintances from SunClan, MoonClan, and DayClan. While you shouldn't have friends in other clans, it is good to get to know a few other cats. You might be able to learn what their weaknesses might be by just listening to them talk. Some cats talk more than they should."
While it pleased him that Giantpaw wasn't planning on making friends, he still thought it would be good to caution him on a slightly different matter. "Be especially careful of your heart around strange she cats during gatherings. More than having friends in other clans, the biggest downfall especially among young cats is being attracted to cats outside our clan. If you want to chose a mate, be sure you chose one from NightClan. Cross-clan romances cause nothing but problems." It had never happened to him but he had witnessed first hand other cats' mistakes.
Giantpaw snorted at the mention of cross-clan dating. "That's disgusting," he said with a laugh. "Of course I would never do that. I don't even think it's possible for me to find an outsider attractive. I think the barest scent of another clan would be unsettling." Firewind's warning was strange to him. Were cross-clan relationships frequent enough that they had to be warned against? If Giantpaw had anything to say about it, he'd ensure NightClan fix that problem as soon as possible.

Firewind jumped nimbly out of the hot springs and wiped the remaining mud off his feet on some grass. "Well, I'm certainly glad to hear that," he replied. He did wonder however about the vehemence of Giantpaw's reply. Most young cats didn't feel that strongly against the cross-clan dating rule, some were even against the rule. At least I have an apprentice his a good head on his shoulders, he thought.
"Next stop is the SunClan border. We haven't had too many problems with them lately but they're buddy-buddy with DayClan, our biggest rival. Seems like they have patched up their relationship over the past few moons." He led the way southeast from the hot springs.
