Opalpaw blinked slowly at his mentor's words. The little of hunting the apprentice knew was from his kit days, when he would chase after butterflies and dragonflies that came into Springclan camp, but nothing more threatening than that. Concern filled his mind as he began to wrap his mind around the idea of catching not only his first prey, but a rabbit of all creatures. From what he knew, rabbits were fast, one of the fastest prey found in Springclan. Though he was pretty fast himself, he wasn't too confident that he could beat a rabbit in a race. If his silence didn't give away his nervousness, the petrified expression on his face did.
"I can try." He finally spoke up, but his words were slightly shaky with nerves.
Viperstream's reassuring smile widened. "You can accomplish this, Opalpaw. I trust in you." For the most part, he taught himself to hunt as he grew up, but at least Opalpaw had more of head start when it came to that. "If it will make you feel any better, I will be nearby. But I will not help you." This was meant to be a learning lesson for him to boost his own self-confidence. Or at least the Deputy hoped it would. "Again, if you don't feel comfortable, we can move onto something else instead."
"No I can do it!" Opalpaw quickly spoke up, wincing at the sudden urge to defend himself. The emotions came out of no where and they were passionate and defensive. His ears fell flat against his head in shame of raising his voice, even if it wasn't too loud. "I want to try." He corrected himself, his tone more leveled and managed than before.
Viperstream nodded approval. Good...he's making progress. "Outstanding, Opalpaw. Let's make it happen then!" he boomed in an encouraging voice. The silver tom was relieved that his apprentice was willing to take on the challenge. He rose to his paws and started off deeper into the woods. "I'll be nearby," he said over his shoulder.
Opalpaw watched as his mentor exploded in a energy of excitement and encouragement before he started off into the forest. Opalpaw watched on quietly as he mentor disappeared into the forest, his paws planted firmly into the earth below him as he slowly began to process what was happening. He was on his own and he had to catch a rabbit before the end of the day, on his first day of training. The weight of the task grew heavily with deeper realization and a wave of panic filled the apprentice. How was he going to do this?
Once his mentor disappeared from his view, Opalpaw finally pressed on, his amber gaze wide as he took in the forest. Everything felt so much bigger and more intimidating without his mentor at his side. He swallowed hard as he ventured deeper into the forest, his ears flicking as it took in the sounds that suddenly broke through the forest. After a few, long minutes of venturing, a cracking in the distance caught his attention and he froze. His ear picked up the sound immediately and began to navigate on the direction of the noise. As soon as he did, Opalpaw crouched and slowly made his way in the under bush, his nose wrinkling as he fought to catch the scent of what ever made that rustling noise...
The small couldn't help but make noise as it searched for something to feed itself and its many young. Now wasn't the time to be stealthy; the rabbit had to find something quick, fast, and in a hurry or else risk being caught by a predator. For a brief moment, it stopped it's search to sniff the air for immediate danger. The air was clear of any suspicious smells. Continuing it's search, it remained oblivious to it's surroundings.
Viperstream climbed up a tree once he knew he was out of sight. From the height he was at, he would be able to observe his apprentice and drop down if Opalpaw got into a difficult situation. He doubted he would need to step in at any point but there was always that possibility. Jumping from branch to branch, he followed behind.
Opalpaw remained steady in his hunt, his amber eyes narrowed with deep focus. His moves were carefully and frankly too slow for the apprentice's taste. Concern riddled his mind as he made a quick glance around, worried about catching a glimpse of his mentor. Was he doing this right? Was he being too careful, too loud, too slow? He yearned for the guidance and criticism he would normally get from his mother, but for once in his young life, he was left on his own to figure it out.
In the midst of his inner storm, there was a soft crunching ahead. Opalpaw froze, taking in the sound and the direction of the source with a few moments of quiet before pushing forward. His noise wiggled slightly as he filled his senses with the scents in the air. His mouth tasted of dirt and dewy foliage, but in the maze of natural scent was the softest taste of rabbit. His expression lit up slightly as he picked up the pace, now hearing the soft crunching sound as he got closer. He was close, so close-
He stopped as he caught the sight of the rabbit in the distant. He felt his muscles tense with natural instinct as he prepared on his bck haunches to leap-
Just then, a gust of breeze flew up his back and towards the rabbit. The moment took the apprentice in surprise, making him flinch just long enough for the rabbit to catch his scent...
In that moment, a breeze swept by the rabbit, carrying with it the smell of a predator. Considering how strong the scent was, it was close. The rabbit instinctively knew what it needed to do. Stopping what it was doing, it bolted down towards the shrubbery, kicking up dirt and dead leaves as it flee toward its hole in the ground.
On his perch above the forest floor, Viperstream continued to watch, eager to see how his apprentice will adapt to the new situation as his element of surprise was lost.
Opalpaw eyes widened in realization. < No! > He thought as he broke in a sprint right as the rabbit began it's own run for safety. The red apprentice bursted loudly through the forest ground, attempting to catch up to the rabbit. He was so close as he started to gain traction, but as the rabbit aimed for a hole, Opalpaw began to kick up dirt harder behind him < Come on, come on! > He thought with wild panic. The lunged, reaching with a paw to just barley graze the rabbit hind before it disappeared into a hole in the ground. Opalpaw landed messily on his paws, gasping for air as he stood watching the hole in the ground. Disappointment framed his expression as he slowly looked around for his mentor, hoping he didn't just witness the apprentice's failure, but despite not catching a glimpse of the silver deputy, he was sure the cat was hidden around somewhere watching him none the less. He sighed, turning away from the hole to embark in a different direction, now with a new sense of caution...
Viperstream stifled a laugh as he watched Opalpaw, but it wasn't a laugh for his apprentice's failure, but rather it was because he was pleased by what he just saw. It didn't matter that he was unable to catch the rabbit, it was the effort the young one put into it. However, he still intended for him to catch one before they day's end.
Some time had passed, too much for the apprentice's taste and no sign or scent of a rabbit. Opalpaw felt the discouragement weigh heavy on his shoulders as he explored the Springclan territory aimlessly. He was lost too and he knew it. He had chosen to stray off the cat made trail to venture in hopes of finding a scent but nothing. Opalpaw glanced around the trees, secretly looking for a sign of his mentor all while searching for a rabbit. This assignment was harder than he had anticipated and frankly, he just wanted some guidance, but he was left with nothing but silence and a lonely forest.
As the weight grew on his shoulders, he suddenly picked up on a distant crunching. His expression lit with with renewed hope and joy and he found himself stalking his way in the direction of the noise, mentally hoping and praying to Starclan this was he was looking for...
Viperstream heard the noise and went on ahead of the apprentice to see what that it was that could have made it. There were many small creatures that inhabited SpringClan's forest so it could be any number of things. If it turned out to be something other than a rabbit, he would have to find a way to discreetly deter the apprentice from taking that route. But, as it turned out, it was just another rabbit. Sitting on his perch, he awaited Opalpaw's next move.
As the orange tom stepped forward into the forest, he found himself much more lighter on his paws, careful not to reveal his position and compromise his hunt. As he neared, his nose wiggled powerfully to get a scent. He hoped and prayed it was a scent of rabbit and much to his relief, the scent slowly took the form of rabbit. He smiled slightly but remained focus as his amber eyes peered intensely into the foliage until finally he caught the sight of a greyish pelt moving in the distance. He stopped fully, waiting as he felt a soft breeze graze his face. He was in the perfect position to sneak closer, down wind of his prey unlike his last attempt.
His steps were slow and careful, probably too much so, but the apprentice wanted to do everything he could to make sure he could complete the task given.
He was now at a close enough distance to make the leap. His muscles tensed as he prepared to jump as he watching the rabbit pick at the forest floor, distracted by the scent of some forest weeds. It was enough time for the apprentice to pounce-
The sounds of surprise and pain-filled squeaks echoed around Opalpaw for only a slight moment before he delivered the final, deadly bite which silenced the rabbit for good. He panted softly as he let the unresponsive body on the dirt floor below him. Waves of adrenaline continue to pulse through the apprentice as he stared in a mixture of awe and shock. He did it. He actually did it.
