It was an unusually warm morning for Newleaf. The sun was just beginning to rise over the treetops as Skypaw came out of the apprentice's den. With each step, he stretched his legs out behind him. What a beautiful day! he thought while looking around the almost empty clearing. The early morning patrol had already left leaving only a few up and around. A gurgling sound from his stomach reminded Skypaw that he hadn't eaten since yesterday afternoon. He wasn't too hungry last night but now was a different matter entirely. I wonder what's left on the fresh kill pile? He walked over to see if there was anything left.
Lightkit was crouched low, peeking through the nursery opening. The camp was quiet, and near the fresh kill pile there was an apprentice. Lightkit knew this was her only chance before someone in the nursery woke up. She was going to have to act fast! The brown and cream kit checked behind her to make sure the other cats were in fact still sleeping and breathed in deep. She could do this. Three ... two ... one ... now! Lightkit gently passed through the entrance. She turned back again toward the tree she called home and held her breath. Quiet. Phew.
It was time for phase two. Intercepting the other cat. Lightkit looked around furtively in case a warrior around the camp was awake and watching her. Getting scolded was definitely not on her list of things to do today! Things appeared to be silent. It was now or never. If she wanted to get to know an apprentice without her mother monitoring her, telling her not to bother them....
The kit padded up to the apprentice and opened her mouth to speak. But, oh... what was his name again? She was going to have to learn these things since she would soon be joining the other apprentices! Sunpaw ... Spiderpaw ... No! That was it- Skypaw!
"Skypaw," she whispered, golden eyes once again glancing around as her voice broke the quiet of the morning. "Hi..."

A scrawny mouse dangling from one of Skypaw's claws dropped back down to the fresh kill pile as he turned to see who addressed him. His wrinkled nose, from inspecting the mouse, straightened back to normal when he saw a brown and cream colored kit standing near him. "Oh, uh, hi," he meowed, placing his right foot back on the ground. Even though he had been out of the nursery for only a moon, he couldn't recall her name but she knew his. She must have a sharp mind. "You're up early. Practicing for when you have to go on morning patrol?" She looked to him to be old enough to be an apprentice.
Lightkit felt slightly embarrassed. Here she was, sneaking out of her nursery to socialize while the apprentice in front of her was under the impression she was practicing for patrol! Maybe it wasn't very good of her to lie to someone ranked above her, but she couldn't help herself.
"Oh uh - yes, of course! You have to be alert when you go on patrol." Lightkit felt stupid. Of course this apprentice knew that. She kept babbling anyway, trying to save face. "And .. and I want to be the most alert out of all the cats. I want to protect the clan!"
Her voice was no longer at a whisper. She couldn't imagine getting into trouble while she was with Skypaw.
"I'll be an apprentice like you soon. They'll assign me my mentor at the next ceremony!" she added, tail flicking with excitement. "I'm going to train to be a warrior! Is that what you're training to be, Skypaw?"

A smile grew slowly on the gray and white patched tom as Lightkit mewed on. She must be nervous around me! The thought both pleased and disappointed him. It pleased him by making him feel important, important enough to make her uneasy to talk to him but on the other paw he really didn't want her to be nervous around him. And for another reason she was going to be his den mate soon.
"Yes, a warrior," Skypaw replied still smiling. "I'm not into flowers and smelly herbs like some cats are." He cast a quick glance over his shoulder to make sure Graythorn, the grumpy medicine cat, wasn't around to overhear him. The last thing he wanted to do today was to be assigned to help him gather herbs. He had done that before and once was enough. "Know what I heard?" He continued without waiting for Lightkit to reply. "The ceremony for this moon will be soon, maybe even tonight."

"Tonight!?" Lightkit jolted to the right, about to excitedly bound around the pile of dead prey before forcing herself to suddenly stop and be still. She plopped down instead, tail curling around her paws to keep them from moving. She was about to be an apprentice; she needed to act like it!
"I hope I get a good mentor. I hope they like to swim as much as I do!" Her eyes were practically glowing with excitement. "And then maybe, when I'm finally a warrior, they'll call me Lightfish because I can swim so well. Or maybe I'll be such a great fighter I'll be Lightclaw!"
Daydreaming about being a warrior was so frequent for Lightkit. She couldn't imagine being anything else! And it seemed like the tom in front of her couldn't either. Not into smelly herbs? This was someone she could look up to.
"Skypaw, who is your mentor? Maybe we can go on patrols together! And we can hunt together! I bet we could feed the whole clan all by ourselves."

Ah ha! Her name's Lightkit! Skypaw smiled again. Thanks! He noticed her excitement and fully expected her to dance around with glee but was surprised when she sat down instead. She must be more mature than I thought.
"Lemonspeckle," he said proudly. It was an honor to be trained by the deputy but it did have its downsides too. Like right now. Sometimes Lemonspeckle was too busy with his deputy job that he runs off on a patrol and forgets to train him. "But it's really up to them if we'll get to train together. And if we do it'll be later on in your training because you'll be learning the basic stuff first." He didn't have to say it but it was implied he was beyond that stage. But in reality he could use some improvement there but Lightkit needn't know that.
"So you like to swim? Did you know I swam in the ocean?" He was part of the ill-fated patrol that went exploring and stumbled upon the large body of water. A kit had died when he followed them. Skypaw still felt guilty about that.

Lightkit's eyes went wide. Lemonspeckle? That made the cat sitting in front of her seem so impressive! Of course Skypaw had already gone on to better things, like actually training. And silly her for assuming this apprentice would still be learning the basics when she got started.
She was pulled from her musings when she heard the word 'ocean'. Ocean?! He had swam there?
"No way! I love swimming! My mom taught me how. She says my legs are so strong. Watch!" Lightkit was thrilled to get to show off in front of the apprentice. The kit fell into a crouch and pushed off with her hind legs, propelling her body forward and over the fresh kill pile. Her tail didn't graze a single piece. Standing back up, the kitten once again curled her brown tail around her paws and watched the tom from across the pile.
She couldn't help but smile proudly. After a moment of pride, Lightkit added, "But you swam in the ocean? I don't think my legs are that strong yet. One day we'll swim together and maybe we can race!"
Lightkit was surprised with herself by the sudden feeling of competitiveness, but she hadn't intended to sound arrogant. The prospect of showing this apprentice her greatest talent was just an opportunity she couldn't pass up.

"You swim through dead mice and birds very well," Skypaw said with a laugh. "But you sure look like you'd be a natural in the water. Ratstar wants every cat to learn how to swim." He did feel a twang of guilt when Lightkit went on about his swim in the ocean. In reality is wasn't a swim per say. It was more of a tumble. He looked off in the distance as he recalled that experience. It was dark and he was looking out over the ocean for the first time ever. Waves were lapping over his feet on the shore when suddenly a large one engulfed him and sucked him in. He remembered the salt, the sand, the cold, the tumbling over and over, and the fear. Then just as quickly the wave deposited him back on the shore. He was never more relieved than he was then. But he did swim out to help Coalkit afterwards though. ....Coalkit ...
He realized he had zoned out but for how long? He gave his pelt a shake as if it would shake off his mood and his memories. "Uh, sorry about that." He put a smile back on his face to cover his feelings. "Hungry?" he asked indicating the fresh kill pile with his tail.
Lightkit watched Skypaw with a curious expression. For a moment there, the apprentice had seemed to zone out. Maybe she had bothered him with something she'd said?
She was about to try to break Skypaw out of his strange mood when he apparently did it himself. Lightkit watched as the tom gestured to the fresh kill pile and felt her stomach rumble in response. She wanted to eat with him, but perhaps her mother would smell the prey on her breath. Lightkit had stopped needing milk quite a while ago, but going back to her den with the scent of mouse caked into her fur would probably raise some questions about her whereabouts: aka, leaving the den without permission.
"I um... yeah, actually. I am a little hungry. But I think maybe I should wait for breakfast..." she drifted off, uncomfortably shifting. Lightkit didn't want the apprentice to realize she had sneaked out to come talk. Maybe one bite couldn't hurt?
"Actually," Lightkit changed the subject. "Were you okay just a moment ago? You seemed to be thinking about something really hard."
_ ;ooc; exciting!! also feel free to end the thread whenever you want, we don't have to drag it out too long! we could pick back up again later after the ceremony at some point, too. c:

Skypaw noticed Lightkit's unease. Maybe she's uncomfortable being around an apprentice when she's still a kit, he thought. It didn't bother him, especially since she'd be promoted soon anyway.
"It's okay if you'd rather wait for your family to eat," he meowed, ignoring her last question. He sighed thinking about his troubles. But he didn't want to be rude. Perhaps it would be good to talk to someone about what happened. "Actually," he began as he sat down next to the fresh kill pile. "I was remembering something that had happened that night at the beach. Something bad, really bad. Do you remember Coalkit, the kit that died last moon?"
- ooc -- If you're waiting to roleplay the ceremony, many of times they're not roleplayed out. If you want it to happen you should message Gidgetgal. She's the leader and one of her cats is Lightpaw's mentor. As for this thread, I'll rp here as long as you like. And we can always start a new one with Lightpaw as an apprentice.

Lightkit cocked her head. A moon ago, there had been something going on ... but if she was being honest, she hadn't been preoccupied with anything besides her own family. Regardless, she felt a hint of recognition when Skypaw mentioned the death of the kit.
"Coalkit?" she mused. "I think my mother told me not to ask questions. I didn't really play with him though."
Maybe she should feel ashamed that she didn't remember, but instead she felt curious as to what the death of Coalkit had to do with Skypaw's sudden change of mood. There was a sense of foreboding in the air. It was something Lightkit hadn't experienced before and something she wanted to not feel again.
The kit pushed a mouse from the edge of the pile closer to Skypaw, hoping to lighten the mood. Something told her though that food wasn't going brighten anyone's spirits.
"I interrupted you getting breakfast," she mumbled. "Sorry. Tell me about Coalkit?"
_ ooc; oh man, I accidentally refreshed the page in the middle of my reply. and ok yeah, when we get bored with this one, it would be fun to do one with Lightpaw as an apprentice, too

When Skypaw looked at the mouse offered to him, his stomach turned sour. His appetite was gone with the remembrance of what happened that night. "Thanks, but I'm not hungry anymore," he replied as he pushed the mouse back into the pile. He hadn't really talked to anyone about the night on the beach, not even the ones who were with him. So why now was he compelled to speak about it? Perhaps it was time to get it off his chest.
"Alright, sit right here," Skypaw began, indicating a spot in front of him with a swish of his tail. "Last moon, actually maybe a little bit longer, a bunch of us apprentices went exploring to the south. We were the ones who discovered the ocean was so close to our land. While we were looking around, a wave pulled me into the water. Luckily for me it spit me out back onto the beach. Right after I got my breath back we all heard a kit calling for help from the ocean. Me and another apprentice went back in to rescue Coalkit but he ... he didn't make it." A lump had formed in his throat so he had to pause before continuing. "He had snuck out and followed us. And I can't help but think he had seen my mishap and thought I was having fun so he tried to copy me. If we had never sneaked out of camp ourselves Coalkit would still be alive."
He hung his head and studied his paws. "So that's what happened," he finished.
-- ooc - I've done that before. It's such a pain especially when you've spent several minutes writing a reply. >.<
Lightkit gently padded forward and sat down where Skypaw had indicated. Even her own stomach was beginning to hurt with the dread that suddenly hung around them.
The kit listened patiently to Skypaw's story. Her hair stood up on end as the apprentice spoke, and when he paused, the silence in the air was palpable. When Skypaw began speaking again, Lightkit took a deep breath, realizing that she had been holding it the entire time.
"I had no idea." Lightkit watched the apprentice hang his head, and her stomach cramped for him. That was a lot of weight to carry around for someone almost as young as she was. Something else was bothering her. She had just snuck out of the nursery, and here Skypaw was lamenting the death of another kit who had died because of so many cats sneaking around. It was something Lightkit would no longer do now that she had seen the result. There was a vast difference between going to the center of camp and leaving the camp altogether, but there was some important wisdom here that the kit could recognize in the tone of Skypaw's voice.
Suddenly taken over with sad feeling, Lightkit stood up and knocked her head against Skypaw's chest, letting out a small purr.
"My mom does this when I'm feeling sad." Lightkit didn't consider the awkwardness of what she was doing, but the kitten was uncomfortable seeing someone older than her be so upset. Usually it was an older cat that consoled a younger one. She wanted Skypaw to pick his mood back up again. "I think that Coalkit is in Starclan right now, and there's no way he blames you. Try to cheer up, Skypaw. I'll bet he's watching you from the stars. Find a way to honor him."
That seemed like advice her mother would offer, and she was fairly certain similar words had left her mother's mouth. There was no way the kit could have come up with them all on her own. But Lightkit couldn't think of how Skypaw could heed this. It seemed to her that her advice was worthless if she couldn't think of an example of honoring Coalkit's memory herself. But maybe it wasn't her job to figure out and it wasn't her path to walk. The best she could do was offer one more head bump against Skypaw's chest.
Post by Whitemuzzle on Apr 22, 2020 16:23:37 GMT -5
Lightkit's genuine concern for him seemed to buoy his spirits even if just a little. And her head bumps into his chest comforted him as well. Gentle touches always had a way of doing just that. But what spoke volumes to Skypaw was the words she said. "Since when have kits become wiser than apprentices?" He was looking up again with a very slight smile on his face. "What you just said sounded like what an elder might say. Are you sure you're only six moons?" As he spoke, his heavy heart seemed to lighten a little but he knew more had to be done to alleviate it completely.
"Find a way to honor him," Skypaw repeated thoughtfully. "Find a way to honor him. But how? Can you help me think of something to do that would be appropriate?" He realized just then he was asking for advice from a kit but so what! Lightkit seemed to have an intelligent head on her shoulders and already in this brief time he was feeling bonds of friendship forming with her.
Lightkit sat back down and licked her paw, rubbing it over her ears so she didn’t have to meet Skypaw’s eyes. She was embarrassed that she’d copied her mother’s words now that she was being asked about them further. Now she felt the need to come up with a way to help the apprentice, not only to save face, but also to offer him a chance at peace. Walking around sad all the time seemed miserable, and the kit couldn’t imagine having to live like that.
“Well,” said Lightkit, placing her paw firmly back onto the ground. “If Coalkit followed you to the water, maybe every time you go to the ocean, you could find dark stones there and make a rock pile for him somewhere safe. It would be like every stone is Coalkit and you’re bringing him home.”
Lightkit felt suddenly nervous. Maybe her idea was dumb and the older cat would regret asking her something so important. A shrine did seem pretty dumb now that she thought about it, but the words had already left her mouth.
“Of course,” she continued, back to rambling. “An apprentice wouldn’t have time for something like that. I’m sure you are very busy!”
And how would a dumb rock pile help Skypaw feel better anyway? It would just force the apprentice to think about the kit every time. Lightkit had learned from her mother that some cats didn’t believe in Starclan. Lightkit wasn’t afraid of death or of losing her loved ones. She knew that one day they would all meet again in Starclan and swim and hunt together endlessly. But there was always a possibility Skypaw didn’t feel the same way she did. What then? She may have insulted him with her idea! The kit was sure she was overthinking it, but she had wanted to make a good impression and it seemed like that was slowly going downhill for her.
Post by Whitemuzzle on Apr 23, 2020 16:28:32 GMT -5
Skypaw mulled the idea over in his head for a moment before speaking. It's true he's been busy what with all the hunting and battle training he'd been learning but there was always sometime he had to himself even if it wasn't everyday. Her idea triggered other thoughts and he began to speak them out loud. "Not a bad idea. I can make the stone pile at the ocean near where Coalkit made his journey to StarClan. It shouldn't be too hard to add a couple of stones every time I visit the shore. By no time it'll become a nice sized monument to him and whenever I see it I would be reminded of him. I've been told that StarClan cats are kept alive by our memories." Then another thought crossed his mind. "Maybe some of the others with me that night might like to add stones to the pile too. Thank you for the idea, Lightkit." He gave her a friendly pat on her shoulder with his tail tip.
Feeling somewhat better, his stomach growled again. "Tell you what, I'm feeling hungry again. You sure you don't want to eat with me? There's plenty here." He pulled the mouse back out of the pile. "That vole doesn't look too bad." He gestured to it with his left paw. The other pieces of prey that was left wasn't too appetizing at least not too him. Especially the stiffening fish. Some cat could break a fang on that! Perhaps he should bury it when he was through. He prodded his mouse. At least his mouse wasn't too hard yet.
Lightkit felt relieved. Skypaw had listened to her. He liked her idea! The kit purred as the apprentice patted her shoulder with his tail.
As Skypaw gestured to a vole in the food pile, her stomach growled again. What was the harm in joining him? After her original guilt at sneaking out, maybe it would make her feel better to get scolded after all. When her mother smelled the prey on her, she would just be honest. And if she was being honest with herself as well, she just couldn't stand not eating any longer.
"Yeah, thanks." Lightkit hooked the vole toward her with a claw. Settling down to eat, she gave the kill a hesitant bite. Its juices flowed into her mouth, and she was about to dig in quicker when she looked up again at Skypaw, waiting on him to begin eating. "S'good." Her mouth was full of meat, but she didn't want to continue eating and be rude.
Post by Whitemuzzle on Apr 23, 2020 17:02:50 GMT -5
Skypaw laughed. "You must be hungrier than you let on," he meowed. "Go on and eat." He didn't want her to wait on him. He took a bite of the mouse and enjoyed the tang in his mouth. "I'll tell you one thing for sure, you'll be hungry after a long day of training." He turned the mouse over for another bite. "When you're an apprentice, you can always come to me with any question you might have." He tore off a second piece of meat and swallowed. "I won't guarantee I'll know the answer but you can ask me anyways!"
A dark gray tabby came over the the pile and gave it a sniff and pulled out a small sparrow. "Good thing you two got here when you did. Not much left but the morning hunting patrol should be back soon." Dustfeather smiled at his nephew then looked over at Lightkit. "I just heard. There's going to be a meeting tonight so all kits should be on their best behavior." He picked up his meal and walked away.
"See! I told ya!" Skypaw meowed. "I bet you'll be promoted." There was a big smile on his face. It's much better to smile than frown, he thought. So much better!
