Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Her oceanic blue eyes wandered through the rolling fields of wheat. They way that they moved in the gentle breeze of the early afternoon calmed and lulled her into some sense of peace. By definition, an ever fleeting peace. It would be easy to shatter this emotion in a million pieces, but why do it? Closing her eyes, the Bengal sighed and stopped for a moment to soak in the Sun's rays. The Huntress's painted body absorbed the winter light with amazing efficiency. The Bengal pattern on her coat almost concealed itself underneath the red and black spirals. The she-cat despised the stickiness that came with the paint, but she knew how to work through it. However, the she-cat did not have time to bask for long. The Huntress heard the wheat give to some weight not too far away. "Come out. You're surprising no one."
In the tall grass was an apprentice lying low, "I'm not hiding from you, I'm hiding from him," She whispered, her eyes directed to the sky. Visibly nothing was there, but the intruder could hear the sound of an owl nearby, "I went out on an evening patrol, got lost and... And now I'm being stalked by that big bird. You should stay low too and crawl on out of here, you're very lucky I'm in fear for my life or I'd shred your ears."
The Huntress turned her icy gaze to the sky. "An owl, hmm?" She said, hardly paying the last thing she said any mind. "I thought you were trained to deal with birds of prey." The Huntress waved her tail before she sat down and wrapped it around her paws. "Come over here, my friend. The owl dares not hunt both of us." The she-cat was well aware that owls rarely hunted anything beyond a kitten any way, but she had friends to make. Or manipulate. Either or.
Lilacpaw's eyes darted away, thinking for a moment. She didn't like the idea of trusting an outsider and this could be a bad move, but she had been in this bad situation for a while now. This could change the odds for her so she carefully, but quickly crept over to the strangers side. Her ears pinned back as she watched for signs of the owl, but it seemed the she-cat was right, it was looking less interested in them now. "I suppose you were correct," Lilacpaw said, not wanting to admit it, but what else could she really do except say thank-you? She definitely wasn't going to say that!
The Huntress watched the owl's silhouette disappear into the starry backdrop with a glimmer in her eyes. Birds of prey always intrigued her. Their intelligence never failed to amaze her. Perhaps the owls and the eagles had a society like they had theirs. Perhaps it was just as complex and intricate, or more so. She would never know, but the thought experiment instilled a kit-like wonder in her mind. She turned her gaze to the apprentice beside her. "I was. Owls are intelligent creatures. You've just got to out-think them and they will leave you alone."
"Ha wow, cool way of thinking and since you saved my life and all I think it's only generous to say that you have three seconds to start running to that border before I claw your ears off. You're still an invader after all, so get running," Lilacpaw said and quick as a whip she had already turned this conversation back to the hostility she desired to give her previously.
She heard her, but did not care for the apprentice's antics. She was infinitely better than her, so why listen. Curious of what else hid inside DayClan's territory, the Huntress shouldered past the apprentice. "Mind showing me what other wildlife you have here?" The Huntress hoped Lilacpaw would recognize that she did not want to fight and just go with it. If not, then she'd do it anyway, without an annoying tour guide. It was a win-win for the Huntress.
"Yes I do mind and even if I didn't care that you were here I will never give you a tour, that's effort and I don't care to get eaten by an owl. Now go, because I bite," Lilacpaw threatened, baring her teeth into a grin.
She looked over her shoulder. "All cats bite." She said, but exhaled a melodramatic sigh. "But, because you are so scary, I guess I'm going to have to take the long way around." She turned her back to the apprentice and headed for the bushes.
Lilacpaw groaned and followed after her, "Why are you even here and why are you so fascinated by an owl that can devour us?"
Lilacpaw's ears were flat, but pulled back at the slightest of noises, her green gaze searching for the sky for danger. It was like there was danger all around her, in the sky and right at her side considering she didn't know this cat at all or what their intentions were.
The Huntress slowed her pace to let the apprentice catch up. "I'm not at all fascinated by that owl, dear friend. They are quite common, mundane creatures for these parts. I'm sure you know of some more interesting animals, hmm?" She looked back and examined the apprentice. "I'm sure an expert of DayClan like you knows everything."
"Maybe you're confusing me for my sisters, but I'm not an Animal Whisperer like they are. I don't really know a lot or care a lot about our local wildlife populations," Lilacpaw said sarcastically, "Although there is this one kit back in camp who's really good with animals, I bet he'll grow up to be an Animal Whisperer. Anyways, I don't know, there's tadpoles? Are those hip enough for you?"
She paid no mind to her sarcasm. Lilacpaw was no one to her. It did not matter. "Hmmm, I'm afraid they're more mundane than owls, dear Lilac." Nor did she care for whatever suffixes the clans decided to append. It was just too many syllables to say. "What is your role then? What drives you to serve your Clan?" She paused. "Let me rephrase. What makes you worth the Clan's time?"
"I don't know, lately I've been thinking of moving out," Lilacpaw admitted, "I don't feel good enough to be here, or more I don't feel like anyone listens to me so I want to move far away. I love my family, but I don't know if I can stand being promoted to warrior and being made a Maverick. A Maverick is a lower rank for people who are mean and I'm definitely not nice, but I still care and all that," She said, mumbling towards the end, "Are you not a clan cat? Where are you from?"
The Huntress smiled and nodded as her walls cracked and crumbled. Lilacpaw had such a tough exterior, but she needed belonging. Too bad it would never come from her clanmates. "I am certainly no Clan cat. I never was, nor will I ever be. Where I come from, that is an interesting question." She slowed her pace to stop and wrapped her tail around her paws. "I was born during a complex time of transition for the League. Tell me, what have you heard about the New Order?"
"Nnn-no. Is that meant to be something important?" Lilacpaw asked walking beside her, but her fascination with the she-cat seemed to be turned up. She was more attentive with a part of herself wondering if this other place the she-cat was talking about was better suited for her than DayClan. She didn't recognize yet just how much she wanted to get out, she had family in DayClan, felt comfortable there, but she didn't have power, because no one had power in DayClan, they had friendship. But that didn't translate in Lilacpaw's head.
"No, not to you, but it shaped how I grew up. A leader name Vera E'tani rose to power in the League shortly before I was born. She was not League born, but came from a place far more brutal. SHe changed the League from the ground up, and made everyone fight for survival. There were regular fights to the death, public executions... anything to draw blood. Vera also proclaimed that the weakest in each litter was to be killed right after birth. It was painful, but the kit was sacrificed for a stronger League. I lived there right up until I became an apprentice." A sadness welled in her eyes, but what it was about remained unclear. Her eyes returned to meet the apprentice's. "The subsequent leaders softened the group again, but during her reign BrookClan was conquered, and multiple other clans were subjugated." She flicked her ears. "I grew up in the New Order's prime. I guess you could say I picked up on a few talents, like knowing when someone wants more from their life."
(Sorry for being slow, I'm graduating college in a few weeks so things have been kind of crazy)
"Wow, what a lady," Lilacpaw muttered, but she knew about Vera E'tani. She had banded together with WinterClan making Glowstar's own son betray her and just when all was bleak and the escape plan was nearly ruined the legendary DayClan warrior, Lionspirit The Righteous held off the league, sacrificing his life so that the entire clan could survive. But hearing a closer in depth story of what actually happened in the league made her heart twist. Did she want a leader like Vera that was so hung up about her clans success that she would destroy and kill any outliers? Or did she wanted a leader like Glowstar who went with the flow and sacrificed self image for heavenly peace? Lilacpaw was listening intensely to the story at this point, but when it stopped she had to blink twice and let out a purr even though her tone was angry, "Hey! I-I'm not that easy to read, I just literally told you, like you would have known if I hadn't. Besides the league sounds too intense for me, so I don't think that would be a good choice and wait so are you like a loner?"
The Huntress knew Lilacpaw would appreciate what Vera had done. The apprentice wanted more from her life and she did not even realize it. Lilacpaw did not seem like the mass-murdering type, so for what other reason would she be amazed by Vera's regin of terror? Perhaps it was just the contrast between DayClan and the League that baffled the apprentice, but any awe layed the groundwork for later. "Hmm, yes, you told me. But I know there is something else to it. A cat of your caliber wouldn't stay here without an anchor." She tilted her head to the side. "My suggestion: free yourself from whoever it is. My parents pushed me away from the League in their quarrels, and it was the best thing to ever happen to me. I lived without someone to hold me back for moons and moons. You know what you can do in that time?" The Huntress layed down and crossed her paws. "Perfect your craft. Become more of who you are, not what your Clan wants you to be. If you discover that you belong here after your travels, then return as the best soldier your Clan has ever seen." The Huntress gestured towards DayClan's camp. "You can't do all that here. "
Lilacpaw kneaded the ground with her paw, "But I don't know how to perfect being a warrior," She admitted before looking up at her, "You're cool, you know how to live on your own, but I just don't know how, I've tried and it doesn't work. I don't think I could leave just like that but... If you were willing to take me in and teach me how to be independent then maybe I can do this?" She said, she didn't look pleading so much as she was simply asking. She had lived in a clan structure her entire life, everything was highly social, to just live in the outskirts of that felt hauntingly frightening. But she also recognized that the Huntress was right, she wasn't going to find what she was looking for here even if she really wanted that to be true. "Maybe you could be my mentor?"
