The smile Autumnpaw offered the leader was contagious and the leader couldn't help but offer a smile himself. "I guess I did." He admitted sheepishly, pulling his flustered gaze away from the young she-cat. The passionate reaction was a large compliment to the leader who surprisingly didn't know how to handle praises. He took in the sight of the Stepping stones with great relief, clearing his throat before redirecting the apprentice to the stones. "This is the Stepping Stones." He spoke with his natural seriousness taking it's rightful place in his tone "Follow me, and please, be careful" The leader stepped forward, a dark paw reaching to a stone, gripping it well for a moment before reaching out for another stone and finally hopping fully on the stones, leaving the safety and comfort of the earth.
Autumnpaw eyed the stepping stones precariously before taking a hesitant step onto the first stone. It was smooth and slightly wet. Her heart pounded as she looked at the rushing water trickling between the stones. She gulped, her nerves making her shake. What would happen if she slipped and fell in? She took a deep breath and leaped to the second stone. Unfortunately, when she landed, her paw slipped on the smooth surface and unbalanced her, causing her tail to splash into the water. Her heart leaped into her throat as she felt herself slip. Luckily, she gripped onto the rock with her claws and managed to keep herself on. She stood there panting and shaking in fear. "I-I can't make it to the other side" she cried, staring down at the water, too afraid to move now that she had slipped.
The Springclan leader paused in his steps, looking back to watch as the young apprentice made her first steps across the slippery rocks. Initially, the she-cat did well, but onto her follow jump, Thistlestar watched as the apprentice slipped slightly. The leader spun effortlessly, strategically moving his body around to face the apprentice, the fur on the back of his neck rising as he watched the young she-cat regain her balance and keep herself up, despite the added weight to her tail thanks to it's small dip. The leader could see the sudden bright light of fear shine in her eyes.
"Look at me." Thistlestar commanded firmly, his words oddly calm and gentle. His green gaze locked onto herself, still and unwavering as he awaited her full attention before proceeding. "If you feel a certain way, you will act in the way that you feel." The deep voice remained calm and still, almost hypnotic. "If you say you can't do it, you won't."
"I know you don't feel like you can right now, but trust me when I say I know you can do it." The words were confident as the tom spoke on, a small smile growing at the edge's of the leader's dark pelted face. " The only thing to do to face your fears it go at it head on." He paused, letting the words sink. The fear in Autumnpaw's expression was still visible and the sight made the leader's expression soften. "If you can't find it in you to believe in yourself, use me, use me and my belief in you, because I do." He reassured firmly before turn back, his head craning back to watch the apprentice. "Follow my steps." He stepped strategically onto a new rock, one much flatter that the others, his step slow and calculated before he placed the rest of his weight and moved to the next rock, glancing back to see the apprentice's progress
Autumnpaw had closed her eyes until Thistlestar told her to look at him. She looked up and heard his words above the trickling of water. As much as she wanted to trust her leader, she was frozen in fear. That was until he began to demonstrate how she could cross the stones safely. Fighting back the Instinct to curl up and stay there until someone could grab her, she gathered up all the courage she had left and mimicked his steps. Her fur was bristling at this time but she pushed forward until she felt the soft, muddy bank beneath her paws.
Relief flooded over her and her fur flattened as she looked back at the stepping stones. Her fearful expression melted into a prideful one. "I did it!" She shouted, giving a small bounce of celebration. She swung her head to look at Thistlestar, her eyes wide in admiration. "Thank you, Thistlestar." She wanted to run up to him and press herself against him in gratitude but knew that, that particular behavior wasnt acceptable with the leader. Instead, she dipped her head politely.
Thistlestar stepped forward slowly, making his way thoughtfully across the steps as he watched the apprentice pushed through the fear, focused on his own steps and guidance until the two reached the safety of solid earth. He watched the apprentice with pride as the fear in her expression transformed into bright pride. He chuckled softly at the sight of the apprentice bowing, shaking his head slightly "No Autumnpaw, this victory is all yours." He spoke firmly, his gaze gentle and bright as he met his apprentice's gaze "You put your faith in me to guide you, but it was you who faced your fear head on, even when fear had you tightly in it's clutches." The words were confident and powerful at the leader spoke them, each word dripping in pride as he painted his perspective to the she-cat "You know, every warrior has fear." He pointed out "But what distinguishes a true warrior from the group is one's ability to discipline themselves to face their fears head on for the sake of their clan." His tail reached out, touching the she-cat's shoulder in a gentle but intentional manner "You are on the right track Autumnpaw."
Pride swelled inside her at his words of praise and grew even bigger when her mentor touched her shoulder and told her that she was on the right track to becoming a warrior. She beamed with pride and a bright grin stretched from ear to ear. The more time she spent with Thistlestar, the more she realized how much of an incredible leader he was. Then it struck her. He told her that all warriors have fear. Thistlestar was a warrior once. Surely there was no way he was afraid! "But, Thistlestar, your not afraid of anything! I want to be just as brave as you are!"
At the apprentice's words, Thistlestar couldn't help but chuckle, his head shaking slowly. "Far from it." He spoke earnestly, his tail flickering for the apprentice to follow as the two continued to make their way through the territory. " I'm scared of a lot of things." The leader's eyes shifted upwards towards the sky, looking at nothing in particular as he spoke "Being brave isn't about not being scared, it's about feeling scared but still doing the right thing, despite your fears."
Autumnpaw hung on to every word her mentor said as she followed him closely. He was so wise. She was surprised that he admitted to being afraid of things. How could someone so great and so brave be scared? She hoped she would be just like Thistlestar. He was always so kind and full of wisdom. "Wow...I hope that I always do the right thing when I'm scared." She responded, thinking into the future at the warrior she could become. "Thistlestar, can I ask you something?" Before he could answer her, she went on with the question. "What were you like when you were my age?"
Thistlestar smiled to himself, turning to look at the young she-cat "I have no doubt that you will. " The confidence in the leader's voice was natural and genuine because he truly believed it. In the little time he had gotten to know Autumnpaw, he could tell she had more than enough hope and goals in one flick of her tail than many cats his age. There was a part of him that wanted to badly to bottle that young spirit and protect it for her, but he knew the apprentice would grow and learn. He just hoped he could maintain as much as that spirit that he could.
The question was intriguing to the Leader. He was rarely asked such personal questions so bluntly. It was surprising, but the ability to answer it was easy. "Your age?" He repeated to himself, thinking back to the time when he first started his apprenticeship. "Well, I was long and scrawny." He started with a breathy chuckle " I was quiet. My mother always said I was shy and rarely spoke to anyone even as a kit, but she said I was always so determined in everything I did." He could hear his mother's voice as he spoke, rendering him to a moment of silence. The last time was saw her was when he was receiving his nine lives. An ache grew in his chest as he pictured the pretty Siamese, her blue eyes wide and bright with pride. "I wish I had been more social like you though." He admitted "I would have had a easier time making friends."
The compliment was received and Thistlestar laughed off the incoming embarrassment " It took a lot of time and work to get to where I am today Autumnpaw. Know that it is that way for all the great warriors we have had in the past and the ones we have now."
In that moment, the two stepped out from the edge of the forest to be greeted by the sight of a field, which was sparsely colored with partly blossoming flowers and greenery. The leader looked out with quiet pride before turning his gaze back down to his apprentice. "We've arrived to the Flower Meadow." He spoke up, turning back to the sight of the field again "In new-leaf, this place is beautiful and bright with different colors." He turned is head to the furthest point of the meadows, pointing his head over towards that direction "Just past that direction is Fallclan Borders, but it is a bit of a walk." He admitted "Do you think you'll be up for it?"
Her gaze widened as she took in the meadow. "Whoa..." she mewed in amazement under her breath, perking her ears. She peeled her gaze from the wide stretch of land and looked up at Thistlestar just as he asked her the question. "Yes!" She answered, puffing out her chest. She was excited to see the border and wondered if they would come across any Fallclan patrols. What if there was a fight? She hadn't had any training. She pushed the worry away and focused on the excitement of seeing new land.
The leader pressed on, walking along the edges of the blossoming field. "During New-Leaf, you'll see a lot more birds and mice here." He started, glancing out at the field, his gaze instinctively looking a for a trace of movement, but he blinked away, focusing instead on his apprentice and their tour. "When hunting, try not to disturb the plants here." He explained carefully "This is one of the main sources of our medicine cats' herbs, so we have to also be careful not to disrupt the herbs here."
Autumnpaw heard what her leader said but didn't answer. She bounded a head, sniffing through all the plants with her tail in the air. As she sniffed curiously, she had disturbed a flock of birds that were pecking on the ground for some seeds. They flew up in her face, forcing her to step back in surprise. Instinctively, she leaped up with impressive height and managed to hit one of the birds with her paw. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to catch it but ended up pulling one of it's feathers out. She sat on the ground, the feather in her paw. "I almost caught it!" She breathed in shock. "Did you see that, Thistlestar? I almost caught the bird!" She bounded back to her leader, the feather in her jaws.
Thistlestar watched as the apprentice advanced forward to the field, watching ahead as he noted the incoming flock of birds. He remained quiet, watching with playful curiosity to see if the apprentice would take notice. He noticed Autumnpaw's distracted appearance and expected the birds to take the apprentice completely by surprise. What the leader did not anticipate was the apprentice's quick rebound and ability to make a swift and nearly successful move towards the birds. Thistlestar's brows furrowed slightly in surprise as he watched the young she-cat launch herself into the sky, barley missing a bird as it made it's escape to the skies above.
Shocked rendered the leader speechless as Autumnpaw bounded up to his, bringing along with her her feathery prize. "I-I did see that." He spoke, stumbling slightly as he took in the apprentice with a widened gaze, look from the apprentice to the skies and back down to the apprentice in a moment of confusion. "I have to admit, I am quite impressed Autumnpaw." The leader spoke, his gaze softening as he took in his apprentice with thoughtful pride. "At you age, I could have never make a jump that high..." He pondered out-loud, his green gaze finding the skies again as he replayed the scene again.
Autumnpaw looked up at him, a wide smile spreading across her face. "Really?" She curled her tail happily, feeling proud that she had done something to impress her leader! She wanted to keep that feather forever!
Having been lost in his own memories, Thistlestar finally looked down to find a bright and wide smile across the apprentice's expression. The intensity of her content surprised the Springclan leader but he pushed back his own sudden urge to smile wide. There was something infectious about the apprentice's attitude, it was hard not to get swept away in her blatant emotions, but he knew he needed to have some sense of composure. The leader cleared his throat, swallowing the powerful need to grin like a idiot and offered a small smile instead "You definitely have the markings to be a talented hunter." He admitted easily, turning on his heels to continue their trek towards Fallclan border.
