Thistlestar stepped into the apprentice den, his steps slow and silent, careful not to wake the other apprentices from their deep slumber. He watched with quiet pride, noting the heavily sleepy bodies of young cats in the rather small and confining den. His gaze glazed over the multi-colored pelts until it stopped at one particularly bright, fiery red pelt. Heavy guilt clouded the leader’s mind as he took in the sleeping body of his new apprentice. It had been a few days since the ceremony, but far too long to begin training. With the lack of prey in Springclan due to the harshness of leaf-bare, Thistlestar was busy joining in hunting patrol everyday since, leaving no time for him to tend to his apprentice. He hoped that the push back in training had not discouraged the newly appointed apprentice in anyway.
Thistlestar’s gaze softened as he made his way forward, stopping at the foot of the moss bed before gently nudging the sleeping apprentice. “Autumnpaw.” He spoke softly, but his deep voice was still rather loud, vibrating heavy against his dust colored chest.
Autumnpaw jerked awake, startled by the voice of her mentor. She relaxed when she realized he was just waking her. She let out a yawn and then suddenly brightened up as if she had just remembered she was an apprentice. Were they finally going out today? She shot to her paws, her amber eyes round with excitement, "Are we doing some training today?"
Thistlestar smirked at the sight of the spirited apprentice. It took all of the leader's inner power to hold back a chuckle. "Yes we are." Thistlestar murmured quietly, nodding off to the entrance of the den, still careful to remain quiet out of respect for the other apprentices. He made his way out of the den, his eyes darting around the camp before landing on the fresh kill pile. "Let's eat something before we head out for the day."
Autumnpaw followed Thistlestar out of the den, excitement pulsing through her. When her mentor and leader suggested they eat, she felt a small bit of disappointment. She wasn't even that hungry. She wanted to go train but she knew she needed to eat to get her energy. She scampered over to the pile and licked her lips as her eyes fell upon the mound. The morning patrol must have brought in some prey because the warm, fresh aroma of the prey kissed her nose. Now, the hard part. What did she want to eat? After careful contemplation, she finally chose a mouse. "Did you want to share this?" She asked Thistlestar through a mouthful of fur.
Thistlestar let out a breathy chuckle, shaking his head at the apprentice's offer. "Eat up as much of that mouse as you can, we have a long day today." Thistlestar spoke as he grabbed the nearest fresh kill to him, a young rabbit that was pretty small. "I'd like to give you a tour of Springclan Territories before we start any specific training." The leader took a bit of his rabbit, his gaze remaining on the eager apprentice with a small hint of curiosity. "What do you think?"
Autumnpaw nodded and settled down to eat her meal. She took an enormous bite out of her mouse, trying to eat as quickly as she could so they could go out sooner. "Oh yeah! Will we get to go to the borders?" She asked with enthusiasm, her voice muffled due to a mouth full of mouse.
" We will." Thistlestar's voice was kind and thoughtful as he watched the young cat rip through her mouse quickly, heavy anticipation radiating through every swallow. "Let's try not to choke to death on prey before we do." There was sternness to the leader's words, but at the same time, his expression was gentle. "There is too much to do today and having to explain the death of my apprentice by choking on bits of mouse is not something I would like to add to that list."
Autumnpaw gave a little laugh, trying to hold the food in her mouth as she laughed. She nodded and swallowed quickly. It didn't take long before she had finished her mouse. Although, she did slow down after Thistlestar warned her about choking. Once she had finished, she threw out her scraps and met back up with Thistlestar. "Do you think we will see any cats from other clans?" She asked, feeling excited just by talking about it. It would be so cool to see another clan patrolling. Would they get into a fight? What if the other clan was stealing prey? She had to dig her claws into the ground to keep herself from bursting with excitement. Even though she had been an apprentice for a few sunrises, she hadn't made the effort to go out of camp. She didn't know the territory and was afraid of being lost. So this was her first time being out and she couldn't wait to see the world beyond the camp walls.
Thistlestar chewed through his rabbit rather quickly largely due to it's small frame. There wasn't much to eat, but the leader wasn't one to eat much in the mornings anyways. "Who knows, we might run into some Summerclan cats, maybe even Fallclan. " Thistlestar spoke in earnest, smirking at the visible excitement on the apprentice's expression. Though seeing other cats patrolling borders wasn't necessarily uncommon, it was far and few. "I want to show you the staple landmarks in Springclan." He meowed thoughtfully, finishing up his rabbit in one last quick motion, tossing aside the scraps following his apprentice. "Knowing where everything is at will help you better navigate the territory when you are allowed to go off on your own without me."
Autumnpaw curled her tail in excitement, "okay! That sounds fun! I really want to go to the Fallclan border! I want to see if I can get a glimpse of my father!" Her tone was cheery but after she had said that, sadness painted a frown on her face.
Thistestar's tattered ear twitched at the apprentices words. He had almost forgotten that the young cat was only half-clan born. Though many would say Thistlestar had very traditional views on clan life, his stance on new comers and half-clan cats were vastly nontraditional and modern. It didn't make a difference in him if a cat was clan-born, half-clan, ex-loner, everyone deserved a chance to prove themselves, it was one of his firmest beliefs.
"I haven't seen Foxfoot in a while." The leader remarked thoughtfully, offering a small smile to the young cat "I can't promise anything, but we can certainly try to keep an eye out for him; who knows, it might be a lucky day today." He offered Autumnpaw a wink, a rarity for the Springclan leader who rarely partook in casual and light-hearted playful gestures.
"Let's get a start then." The leader didn't wait for the apprentice, making his way towards to clan entrance.
Autumnpaw's frown turned into a grin when Thistlestar told her that it was a possibility she could see her father but he did say that he hadn't seen Foxfoot in quite some time. Hopefully nothing bad had happened to him. He would have followed Fawnheart to Springclan if it weren't for her other siblings who had chosen to stay in Fallclan. She knew Foxfoot didn't want to abandon the kits left in Fallclan so he had stayed to take care of them until they were old enough to be apprentices or warriors. However, with everything that has happened, she wasn't even sure Foxfoot was still there or still alive. Maybe she would see one of her siblings. She hadn't seen any of them since she moved to Springclan. She hoped now that she was an apprentice, she would be able to see them on patrols and at gatherings.
With new hope in the apprentice's heart, she bounded after Thistlestar with a spring in her step. When they arrived out of camp, Autumnpaw's jaws dropped. "Wow! I didn't know the world was so big!" She scanned her surroundings in wonder with round, amber eyes. The fox colored somali she-cat couldn't believe her eyes. This was amazing! Suddenly, she saw something enormous out of the corner of her eye. When she turned to see, she almost jumped out of her fur. A few fox-lengths away stood a large beast with horns growing like branches out of it's head. It had a long snout and small beady eyes. It was tall and stood much higher than any creature she had seen before. She noticed that it didn't have a tail either. Or well, not much of one. When it startled, it turned and bounced away like a giant rabbit, making a crashing sound through the leaves with it's pointy feet. Autumnpaw leaped back as it bounded away, her heart racing. "What in Starclan's name was that?" Her eyes were wide but not out of wonder, out of fear. That thing was massive.
Thistlestar watched the apprentice's expression grow bright in awe and shock as she took in the world around them. The sight brought pleasant memories of his own first time leaving Springclan and he couldn't help but purr quietly. He was so excited after his first day of training, he couldn't run fast enough back to his mother to tell her about his day. The memory of his mother brought a heavy wave of melancholy in him as he thought of the pretty she-cat before pushing past the memories to refocus on his apprentice. A moment in the corner of his eyes caught his attention and he turned before his apprentice took notice, finding the sight of lone buck roaming ahead, grazing on the bark of the tree closest to him. He chuckled deeply as Autumnpaw observed fearfully, his tail reaching out to touch her shoulder softly "Have no fear, that is called a Deer." He explained quietly, thoughtful enough not to want to spook the creature away. "They travel in and out of Springclan to feast on the plants and bark of the trees, but more so in leaf-bare when food is scarce." Thistlestar dropped his head to his apprentice's level, his gaze tight on the buck ahead "They are harmless and run away if we get too close." He paused for a moment before a smirk grew across his muzzle "Rumors of the fearless and powerful pack of Springclan warriors have made deer weary and fearful of our presence, that is why they take grate care to give us our space."
So that's what a deer looks like! she thought, remembering the stories she had heard about them. Her own mother was named after a young deer but she didn't realize how big they were. Her ear twitched when Thistlestar bent down to tell her about why deer were afraid of them. "Really?" Her voice was amazed as if she couldnt believe a couple of brave warriors ran up to one of those things. "They were really brave, then!" She gave Thistlestar a sideways glance, "were you one of those warriors, Thistlestar?"
Thistlestar chuckled deeply at the apprentice's inquiry, unable to hold back a wide smile "No, these were Springclan warriors of the past." He remarked calmly, thinking quickly on his feet to continue the story he made to make the apprentice feel much better about the sight of the foreign creature. "We come from a long line of powerful warriors." He pressed on, carefully guiding the apprentice away from the direction of the deer, his steps careful and quiet as not to spook the deer. "Our ancestors made great strides to create the life we have today. It is our job to maintain the traditions and hard work that those before us created."
"What does it mean for you to become a Warrior Autumnpaw?" The question was sudden and thought provoking and one Thistlestar's own mentor asked him as a young apprentice. Speaking the words of his previous mentor made the leader feel warmth with pride.
Autumnpaw followed Thistlestar more slowly, her ears perked in interest at the lesson about their ancestors. A feeling of pride flowed through her veins as she thought back on the blood she carried but then that pride faded as she thought about her mixed blood. All of the Springclan warriors sounded so awesome but she wasn't full Springclan. She was mixed with Fallclan. How could she represent what her ancestors built when she was mixed? And not only that, she was also the daughter of a medicine cat. Cats still frown upon it and they seemed not to trust her because she wasn't born into Springclan.
She was snapped from her thoughts as Thistlestar's question hit her ears. What does it mean for you to become a warrior? The question rang through her mind over and over before she responded. "Everything" she spoke, confidently. "I don't want cats to look at me and see me as a daughter of a medicine cat or mixed clan blood. I want them to see me as the warrior that is going to make a difference. I don't want to be just a warrior. I want to be the warrior. I want to be a Trusted." She looked at Thistlestar with seriousness, holding his gaze with her own intense amber eyes.
Thistlestar's sharp green gaze brightened as the young apprentice spoke, a hint of a smile growing at his edges as he watched the young she-cat go on passionately. Pride grew as he listened on. He held onto the young she-cat's gaze for a while, noting her unwavering intensity. "I don't doubt you can do that and more Autumnpaw." His voice was gentle but firm as he acknowledge the apprentice's vision with confidence. "Half-clan, kitty-pet born or clan-converted rouge, anyone can chart their life in any direction they can dream of." Thistlestar turned his vision back towards the woods ahead, noting the Stepping Stones that were coming in the distance. The smell of rushing water in the active river began to grow stronger as the two proceeded forward. "If we were limited to that of our blood, I would never have been a Leader myself." He added with a hint of seriousness. Many cat's often forgot that the leader himself was only half-clan born. His own mother never revealed who his real father was for the sake of saving his only surviving son the fully maltreatment and judgement a half-clan born cat would receive. With hard work and perseverance though, Thistlestar proved himself from a young age prompting those who doubted him to see his skills rather than his unknown lineage. To this day, the leader rarely heard a remark of his own parentage making it uncommon knowledge for the younger generations.
Pride flowed within her as Thistlestar told her that no matter her blood, she could grow to do marvelous things and that was what she wanted. She was so relieved that Thistlestar was so understanding. She could have been stuck with a mentor that hated her for where she came from but this tom seemed to think of it as a strong foundation. Something to grow on and prove others wrong. Yeah, she was half Fallclan but she was determined to be the best Springclan warrior the mountain clans have ever seen.
Her eyes grew wide when her mentor mentioned he was a half clan born as well. "Really? What other clan do you have in you?" She asked curiously, feeling much better that even a leader was half clan.
" I don't know." Thistlestar spoke calmly. The leader's words were accepting and peaceful despite the shock factor the admission would create. He was always aware of his status since kit-hood. He was teased for it, his mother frowned upon and his potential criticized. "My mother never spoke about my father. She felt that ignorance would be less painful than knowing the truth." He looked down at the she-cat as the two finally made it to the stepping stones, pausing to take in the tranquility of scene before him. The stinging memories of the past faded with the sounds of the babbling river and he looked down at the apprentice "You'll never be able to hide from the stares, they will always see you as only half, but it is up to you to fill in the rest with your example."
Autumnpaw listened closely to what he had to say, her ears perked. She wished cats weren't so judgemental. "I guess you showed them, then, huh?" She responded with a smile. "Your a leader" the way she had said leader was with great admiration.
