Foxstar was insane, and with that came a litter of kits who would be raised different from her last litters. There was no was there unspoken distance or neglect. No, she ensured that these kits were pampered, fawned over with love and given whatever their hearts desired... so long as they obeyed. The rules weren't hard, it was really only one: do anything she said without question. Disobedience was met with swift and harsh retribution, the kits prized things destroyed, taking herbs that made them feel terrible, psychological harm, though nothing physical was ever done, and the moment they cried, she spun it around that she was doing this because she loved them, because it was best for them.
SunClan may have stepped in, if Foxstar had not already ordered them to keep their paws off her children, and specifically, she'd made it clear to Skipstep and Littlebird, her Promised and the younger cat's Janus mate, that they were not to interfere in her parenting in the slightest, nor enlist anyone to try and do so.
So, all the kits knew was what they were told. Their mother loved them dearly, but she had to punish them if they were naughty. So long as they were good little boys and girls, everything was perfectly fine. If they hadn't been ordered by their parents to do something, then it wasn't wrong. The Code came secondary to Riverwolf and Foxstar's orders, and the words of others came dead last. They'd been instructed to find one of their parents if an order seemed dangerous, that the cat giving the instruction was trying to take them away from her.
They were to be raised as perfect little pawns, to not form attachments to the others in the clan, because everyone wanted to take them away from her. And Foxstar would be oh so sad about that.
Today, she'd taken the kits on an outing. The Priestess, Riverwolf, and their seven kits went to the lake, watching the gold-green leaves turns bright yellows, with oranges and reds thrown in on occasion. It was early, just after the Morning Prayer and breakfast, so the kits were all ready to play, and they'd been told to grab whatever toys or food they wanted to bring, because they'd be gone a good portion of the day.
For now, they'd been told they could go and play on the small beach around the cold, clear lake, but warned to stay within sight of their parents.
Neck craned high and elegant, the young kit strutted between his siblings. Festeringkit knew he was uniquely handsome out of his siblings and he had faith once day, when he was older, everyone else would agree with it. The other kits might mock him now, but when he was a warrior and all the she-cats hung on his paw, he'd laugh and show them all. If he was an awkward-looking kit with his thick short ropes of curly fur, making his body look twice as big but his legs and neck half as long, when he grew into it he'd become beautiful. Festeringkit knew it, so he looked after himself, and he practiced the graceful movements he'd need later on when everyone was watching him.
But, pausing, he glanced over at his other siblings with a frown. He had planned on practicing all day, so he hadn't grabbed any toys, but.... maybe that was a mistake. He really wanted to play. Maybe his siblings would let him use their toys?

Tinykit laid down the snake that she had found in the freshkill pile down with a huff. It was far larger than herself, and even though everyone had tried to get her to bring something smaller she had insisted upon bringing the new and interesting prey with her on the outing. It was rather heavy, and she had spent the long trek dragging the snake with a determination that most of her siblings lacked. Even when the long creature got tangle on some weeds, she had refused to allow either of her parents to assist in freeing it "Now I can enjoy it with a view" she meowed looking out over the lake, even though she was out of breathe

Castawaykit was one of the more eccentric siblings of the litter. He rather seemed to like twoleg things, and had somehow managed to get a hold of a scarf, tied in a knot around his neck with the edges dragging down, and a golden loop earring attached to one ear. It had hurt, initially, to pierce it, but it was fine now, and he loved knowing that the glittery object was on display for all to see. After all, the young cat fancied himself a pirate.
As it was, he'd come prepared. Using the ribbon scarf, he'd stored a few jingly ball toys and a toy mouse. In his jaws, he carried a few actual mice by their tails, figuring that would last him the day, though he had half a mind to try his paw at fishing. How he'd get that far out on the lake, he wasn't sure, but he could attempt to build a raft, he supposed.

Renegadekit had followed her parents and siblings quietly on the journey to the lake, her thick white and black pelt occassionally getting tangled when it brushed the growth, it was frustrating and she worked carefully each time to unknot it in a way that would cause the least damage to her coat. The small she-cat although quiet was a force to be reckoned with, her short fuesed temper always on the brink of surfacing.
When they had finally reached the lake she gave her pelt a shake and looked around at her siblings with blue eyes, wondering how it was she got stuck with them. "This is dumb." She hissed, stalking closer to the edge of the grass where it turned to sand. She had not wasted any effort in bringing a toy and the thought of dragging prey along with them seemed too tiring so she was empty pawed, who needed those things though when there was a world of unknown trinkets at their paws.

Burningkit was on the larger side of his siblings, bright orange like a flickering ember as he traveled through the undergrowth with his siblings. They were certainly a cast of characters, not that he knew any different. When his siblings found treasure, he generally took the rejects. Largely cause he liked them more than whatever stuff they were more interested in. His prize was a small crocheted pink headband with a sewn on bow that was thrown to the wayside and was probably meant for a twoleg child that he now got to wear around his neck. It was baggy now, not enough to where it dragged along the ground but enough to be noticeable, but he'd grow into it. It at least helped him carry the robin he had chosen from the fresh kill pile for this journey.
When they finally made it, he happily dropped the robin, the tension in his neck finally lessening. They all immediately went off to do their own thing and Burningkit was no different. He trekked along the edge of the beach, kicking some sand up as he wondered just how far he could go before getting scolded at. He paused when he felt something hard underneath him and dug it up, but it was only an empty shell and he tossed it behind him.
"Hey, Burningkit! Come make a raft with me!" Castawaykit bounded after his littermate, prey and toys temporarily forgotten. "I wanna catch a fish. You should help!" He suggested, sticking his tongue out at Renegadekit as he ran past. Killjoy.

Renegadekit glanced sideways as her brother ran past shouting to Burningkit, the quick flash of his tongue protruding out at her quieting him for only a moment. The she-cat rolled her eyes and for an instant felt the urge give him a good wack across the head, her small needle claws unsheathed and dug into the dirt but she remained where she was.
"I hope you fall in." She mumbled openly not caring who could hear, her voice was smooth a tempting melody that if used correctly could draw you in.

Burningkit was easy to convince, especially since he didn't really come out here with a plan or anything. Barely acknowledging his sister's grumblings, he spun on his heel and nodded, "Yeah, I wanna see what's on the other side of the lake." Orange eyes like fire stared out at the clear tranquility of the lake. Who knew what was waiting for them out there? Certainly not Burningkit, especially if he just sat here. "We'll need what, twigs and the like?"
"Twigs, vines, and something to either paddle with, or use to catch the wind." Castawaykit agreed with a short nod, already racing up and down the beach in search of sticks. Would this work? Probably not. But he was too young to care much about, or really even things about, the likelihood of it, so it didn't much matter.

Riverwolf watched the kits with pleased, but cautious eyes. They were precious to him and Foxstar and they couldn't afford one getting injured.
"That sounds like a lot of work." Leaguekit piped up, stalking up to the group of kittens, her flame-colored fur neatly groomed and sharp green eyes narrowed with judgement. "Can't we pick something more practical to do?" She had picked up a sophisticated kind of way of speaking from listening to her parent's conversations and was a natural temptress. Basically, she watched her mother and tried to copy everything she did.

Burningkit pulled himself up off the beach, rapidly approaching the treeline. For a large orange kitten, he wasn't awful at sneaking around but he was still a kit with no experience other than trying to avoid his parent's sharp gazes. At the line to the forest, twigs littered the ground and a few broke from underneath his weight. If they didn't, he tossed them backwards to fall onto the beach for Castawaykit to maybe find. Slipping past the barrier, a long vine almost tripped him up. Grabbing it, he hastily made his way back to the beach. "There's no fun in practicality though." He pointed out to his sister, dropping the vine.

Renegadekit growing tired of staring out at the water turned toward her siblings, she didn't understand the point of what they were doing but watching them fail could be fun. Her thick black and white coat which normally remained spotless was covered in leaves and burrs from the journey here and with each step she could feel them pulling at her coat, for now though she would let it be. Her white paws carried her to where Burningkit was blindly throwing the sticks he found, one of them just barley missing her as she stepped sideways out of its path. "So, what happens if you all get on this thing and it sinks? Unless you magically know how to swim." It was a serious question, but her concern was not for them, she wanted to see the raft sink.

"You always gotta have this negative thinking, huh Renegade?" Burningkit rolled his eyes, gathering all of his scattered sticks into one pile, "It if sinks, it sinks. We'll make it back to shore somehow. But it's better to believe it until that happens." He had no real reason to put all this blind faith into the raft, especially one just being thrown together for the heck of it, but he did. Far more positive, he was sure they'd be saved. But even if they weren't, he didn't mind. Maybe in death he'd finally be free from being under their mother's oppressive thumb.

"That would be kind of fun to watch." Leaguekit snorted with a contemptuous flick of her white-tipped tail. "With all that fur, you all would definitely sink. Ugh, and then we would have to save you. How annoying."
Festeringkit was getting tired of playing by himself, so the dirty rag of a kitten strolled over to join his siblings. "Try it anyway. If you're lucky, Mom will rescue you. If not, more prey for the rest of us," he mewed cheerfully.

Renegadekit looked from Leaguekit to Festeringkit a small smile curving her lips at their words, perhaps all her siblings weren't a bore after all. "Well I've been convinced, let's see how this goes." She moved a little closer and sat down to watch in Hopes that their project would end in disaster and chaos.

Tinykit rolled her eyes, keeping her distance from her siblings and their rather ridiculous ideas. A raft, really? She laid down and started tearing into the snake, her ears perked and listening to the conversation of those around her. "Papa, can you teach me how to hunt one of these? They are really good" she purred in amusement. Let them have their fun, she would have hers.

"Of course, my little goddess." Riverwolf purred, tapping his nose lightly on her head. "Anything you want to know, I will show you."
Leaguekit scoffed, flicking her tail dismissively at their antics before taking an interest in Tinykit's question. "You want to learn how to catch a snake?" She purred with a smirk. "You know it would probably eat you."

"It will not, not with poppa teaching me anyway" she beamed, glad that he was allowing this. Ever since she had saw the creature in the fresh kill pile she had already been trying to figure out the best ways to catch one on her own. She had already caught a small mouse, a feat that most kits couldn't claim.
