[ for sure! I will shoot you an message with a few ideas ]
Blue listened to Funk intently as he described his theory behind the kittypet's death. Most of it didn't make a lot of sense to her, but she admired his passion, perhaps even a little jealous that he had found something he loved so much to dedicate his time. Blue's main goal in life was a simple one: surviving. Someone weak like her would not have been able to live long in the League long if she hadn't played her cards right. She was not sure if this little experience with her Nemesis had aided her in her goal, or taken her several steps back.
Blue's tail-tip twitched as Funk gave her her next instructions. While she regularly interacted with Internal and Foreign Affairs, she generally avoided the Punishment Division. Those cats could be impossible to reason with and were wholly unpredictable. It made sense that Funk would send her to find a cat from that district, though; if anything, they would love the sight of blood mixed with leaf litter. She was familiar with Lorelei, too; a beautiful she-cat, giant compared to Blue, with a sadistic streak like most of her league-mates. Finding her would be easily, and relatively painless... had Funk not used "We" instead of "You."
"Sure thing, I can find her," Blue said, emphasizing the I just a little. She stood up and stretched her achy shoulders, her back sounding off a muted pop as it realigned. She was quite skinny - her ribs were easy to count. Once she finished stretching, however, her lusterless pelt hid it well enough. She glanced back at Funk for a moment, then took her first step toward the Punishment Division's haunt, wondering if he was going to follow her or not.

"You can find her, sure. But did you retain anything I just said?" Lorelei would surely push off the risks as 'it's no fun if you don't worry about being killed by it', but Funk still found it in him to at least warn her. Plus, if she died too, they would at least know why. And he'd get to brag a little. So win-win-win. Not that he expected any of Senescence's kits to keel over that easily, they had the endurance of cockroaches and the viciousness of fire ants. At least they were on his side. He tilted his head and followed her slightly, a few paces behind as the grass cleaned his paws.
Blue felt her ears burn to be put on the spot. She may have not paid as close attention as Funk may have hoped, but her memory was one of her greatest strengths. She was confident she could at the very least paraphrase.
"Yes, Funk E'tan," she mewed, keeping her voice as evenly as possible, "Winter cherries cause multiple negative symptoms but does not induce vomiting, which of course makes it that much more deadly. You believe that your.. uh, poultice, confused the kittypet and led him to eat the cherry."
So, he had chosen to go with. Blue shouldn't have been surprised, especially since he very clearly told her he would. It was probably for the better. Blue knew the general places to look for Lorelei, but Funk would surely find her much faster. She fell back a few paces so that he was just a step ahead of her, but didn't bother cleaning the blood of her paws, knowing she'd be right back in the mess before long.

"I guess. Winter cherries aren't that common around here, so they easily could have confused them for something else. It's a possibility, though I think it's the most likely." Unfortunately for Funk, cat autopsies were still a new thing. Most would just see a dead cat and move on, rarely letting their curiosity get the better of them to examine. There was also a sort of taboo of messing with a corpse, but the Nemesis never cared much for social do's and do not's, especially those that got in the way of his research.
"But that wasn't a bad paraphrase, Blue. I'd like to keep a close eye on Lorelei, though. Even with all the warnings, she's still gonna do what she wants. And the effects of eating something that died from eating winter cherries isn't well documented." In his brief talks with Innocentia and Lorelei, they had experience little side effects from eating 'contaminated' meat, but it was better to be safe than sorry. And better to have an eye witness than not.
Finding Lorelei was much easier than finding her superior, she at least was tall enough to stand above most of the crowd. The calico had found a sunny spot to lay in on a lazy day.
Blue listened to Funk's lesson more closely this time, knowing now that she may be quizzed on it later; however, when the topic switched to Lorelei, her first reaction was a chuckle. She initially took this new assignment as a joke. The last thing she was expecting to be told was to play babysitter. However, Blue soon realized her leader was serious, and tried to recover with a cough. Luckily, Lorelei was now in sight, and Blue hurriedly approached the other she-cat.
"Lorelei," she meowed with a terse, no nonsense tone, "Funk E'tan has a mess that needs cleaned up, he said you're just the one of the job." The small black cat's impression of Lorelei had shifted slightly, but surely an established cat like herself wouldn't be too hard to handle, especially since they were more or less equal in rank and appeared relatively close in age.
The blood on Blue's paws was hard to see against her dark coat, but the scent of gastric acid still pervaded the small she-cat, surely heightened for Lorelei due to the proximately of Blue's paws to the other she-cat's head.

Lorelei didn't jump up right away, instead stretching her long limbs in the slab of sun. "Well, why don't you take care o-" She started, much too comfortable to move when she realized just what kind of mess the black she-cat meant and the smell of gastric acid hit her nose. She was so terse though, no fun. "Oh. I see. Why. What's the occasion?" She rolled over slightly, resting her head on her paws as Funk spoke.
He heard the chuckle from Blue, but chose to ignore it. For now. "Nothing special. Just a little treat. Though you may get sick."
"That's what you always say. Sucks the fun out of everything." The calico finally stood, almost a head above the Nemesis and probably more over Blue. Stretching, her pelt like blood and tar stuck to her skin, and she could only shake it out so much. "I take it your little science experiment is done? Great, then let's get a move on." She declared, suddenly darting from the pair and down the stairs just so she wouldn't end up sleeping again.
Blue was nearly dwarfed in comparison to Lorelei. The tufts on the tip of her ears barely reached the other she-cat's chest. It's not like Blue was freakishly tiny - she was about the same size as the average trainee - but Lorelei just made her feel smaller. It was annoying.
It also irked Blue that Lorelei seemed all to in-the-know about this dissection. It made her wonder if the reason she had been looped in as Funk's assistant to begin with was because Lorelei had been a no show. There was not exactly enough evidence to draw such a correlation... but it still gave Blue a bad taste in her mouth. She normally tried to keep a more open mind when meeting a new cat, and would probably scold herself for it later, but at the present she was just not in the mood.
"Watch it!" Blue hissed as Lorelei bounded past her, stepping aside as to not get trampled. As the calico disappeared around the corner, Blue smoothed her ruffled fur groomed her chest a moment before quietly padding after Lorelei... with a markedly faster pace than she had taken to get here.

Really, Lorelei knew nothing about the dissections Funk E'tan did. All she knew was that sometimes he needed someone cleaned up and Lorelei was a lot less busy than Innocentia and he always said she'd get sick but so far, she's only been once. The only reason Blue got dragged in was because she came across the Nemesis at a bad time. If the calico had noticed, she didn't care, happily drumming down the stairs and out of the estate. Opening her mouth to catch the fresh scent of blood, she made for the grove where the experiment had happened. "So what did you do?" She asked to no one in particular.
Funk, meanwhile, was satisfied with his work and would retire to his den or follow to watch the process. But a cat approached him with a question about herbs and he quickly forgot Blue, Lorelei and the splashes of acid on his pelt.
It took a few moments, but quickly Blue realized that Funk was not going to oversee the clean-up. She chastised herself for even assuming he was; that really would be babysitting. In fact, in hindsight, it was liberal it was of him to take her straight to Lorelei at all - he could have just told Blue to find Lorelei on her own and left it at that. As fearful as she was of him at the beginning of her encounter, however, the Nemesis had been more even-tempered and patient that she had expected him to be one-on-one. She wouldn't have admitted it, but she would miss his presence, just a little.
Since Blue had assumed Funk was coming, she had not left with Lorelei right away, and had quite a lot of catching up to do. She was naturally at a disadvantage - after all, one stride of Lorelei's equalled approximately two strides for Blue. Her body screaming in protest as she belted after the other she-cat, stumbling her way down the stairs and then out to the courtyard. By the time she had caught up with the calico, she was very winded, and probably would have gotten sick if she hadn't done so already. Blue was not a lazy cat but if she was too active she had a hard time keeping food down.
"Not much, I just helped break a few ribs," she mewed in response to Lorelei's question, breathing heavily, but doing her best not to look worn out, "It was definitely... messy. The first dissection I've ever been a part of, if you can believe it..."

"Really? How fun! That must have been a treat. Not something you get to do too often in Ambassadors, huh?" Lorelei chirped, her footsteps slowing slightly. More so she could prepare herself for the satisfaction rather than for Blue's comfort. But hey, two birds, one stone. For being a constant terror, Lorelei was rather relaxed and friendly compared to her clanmates. Though it also came with extreme childishness. She never really had a childhood, so this was the best the young she-cat could ask for. "Breaking ribs is hard though, I normally just brute force it, so good job. The mess is half the fun, in my opinion. There's something fascinating about how the body works. I'd envy the Pathologist and Resident if I had the patience for that kind of work." She beamed, rambling a bit as she tended to do.
"As much as we hate to miss out, we like to leave the messy tasks like that to you folks in Punishment," Blue replied with gentle sarcasm. She paused, then honestly added, "The ribs were a nightmare, I'll definitely be remembering them tomorrow morning, pretty sure a wrenched by shoulder a little..."
Despite the bad first impression, Blue was finding it easy to talk to Lorelei. She had a sort of impish disposition, but seemed nice enough, which was evident when she modified her pace to one more suitable for her smaller companion. Blue knew the calico was far from harmless, but decided she would let her guard down just a little bit.
Funk and Blue's bloody paw-prints were now in view, still wet against the crisp dying grass. The sweet reek of death grew stronger and stronger as the footsetps became darker and more visible. The kittypet's body lay just as it had been left, spreadeagle with cuts and other gore, half of its ribs in a disorganized pile on one side of its body, blood splashed atop its leafy bed. The smell was quite strong, pungent even, and was sure to encourage scavengers if left out much longer. Blue knew with certainty that she would not be eating any dinner tonight.
"So..." Blue began, not really sure where to start, having never disposed of a body, "I'll let you take the lead here."

"I guess that's fair. That's why we're in Punishment after all." Well, somewhat. Punishment was made for Lorelei, who jumped in the district as a trainee as soon as she arrived. She guessed most were there to feel powerful over someone since they have no control in their lives otherwise. Her, though, she was just here for the violence and the gore. So the more intense the smell of blood and acid became, the more her mouth watered. "They always are. I'm more used to breaking them from the outside and that's hard enough. Just stretch when you can, but don't overstretch. That'll make it worse." She rarely had to break ribs, most of the time a limb or two will get you all you want. The few times were neat though, but she always left with her ears ringing from the screams.
Blue was a tad sassy, but she seemed alright. Not that Lorelei overly paid attention to her tone. As the pair approached, she dragged her paws through the stained grass, letting it color her paws red. Odd eyes scanned the decrepit remains of the kittypet. Most of its organs were visible as they laid on their back, like making bloody angels in their blood. The smells of death, herbs, and metal polluted the air. She couldn't stop the grin from spreading across her face as she examined the ribs. They were taken out so neatly, she was impressed.
"That's fine. I got it from here. You know what I'm gonna do so look away if you want. I'll give you 5 seconds. 5....4....3...."
[ I started writing this yesterday but then my sister called me and begged me to help her write a cover letter... blame her for the delay! ]
"Go ahead. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help get this done as quickly as possible," Blue replied, cutting off the countdown at three, looking just past her companion but nowhere in particular, "I still have my patrol to finish, after all..."
Blue may trust Lorelei, but not quite enough to take her eyes off her; she would have to dismiss the calico's warning. She had already emptied her stomach, after all, and it's not like whatever the other cat was going to do could be much worse than what Funk had already done. Blue hoped so, at least. She had an idea of what was going to come next and was steeling herself against it. She hoped that adding urgency to the task would dissuade Lorelei just a little bit.
She turned her icy eyes to Lorelei's paws, which were somehow already dirty with blood even though she had not yet touched the corpse. The stains were especially bright against the whites of her fur. They almost looked like they were meant to be there, just a slightly deeper crimson patch to match the ginger pacthes she already had. Blue's own dark coloring hid the blood well, her paws only a shade darker than the rest of her pelt. She felt a small pang of jealousy to be so plain-looking compared to her companion. It was a strange emotion to have at the present, very much out of place. Blue felt a smirk form on her face. What a ridiculous day this had been, and it wasn't even over yet.

Gee, she wasn't gonna like jump on Blue's back. Especially when she had this nice grotesque treat in front of her. At this point, Lorelei would have figured that someone else picked up the slack on the patrol by now, not that she was overly concerned with whatever the other had been doing. Taking in the scent in front of her one last time, she got to work. Though it was anything but elegant. It was raw and disgusting, as she inhaled the flesh like air. Blood poured from her mouth, and she didn't bother to hide the disgusting sounds she made as she devoured the kittypet. Really, the taste was similar to most prey, what separated it was the taboo. Saying you were a cannibal always gave you a look, but there was something more to it. At least for Lorelei.
It was truly astonishing how fast she did this, but she always stopped for the most important part. The heart. It was where all the emotions were stored, where she could taste the true peak of what it means to exist, to feel. The cats she killed herself always had the sweetest hearts, but kittypet's were good too. All fat and full of blood. The squelch that followed would surely make even the most hardened hunters shudder. She was quickly awash in emotion. Most of the time, it was fear, panic, confusion. You know, all that good stuff. The strongest flavor was confusion, but she also felt bizarrely calm as she ate. Like she was truly found some inner peace in death.
The taste faded as she ate the last ventricle. Like she ate a thanksgiving feast, she sat up and sighed, a bloody burp echoed out from her gut. "Alright, let's go. Ribs should get to Elyon and we'll set this pelt out to dry. Let me take the head off real quick."
Blue had tried to watch, but it was not long before she turned her face downward. She should not have tried. Now all she had to focus on was the sound, which may have been worse. It did not sound any different than eating a rabbit, but knowing what was really happening was deeply unnerving. She did not feel bad for the kittypet, he had foolishly gotten himself killed, but watching someone chaotically tear into a corpse like that was just too much for her. Funk had done it for what she deemed a good reason, at was smart about it; the same could not be said for Lorelei..
Blue felt a gooey chill slowly seep between her toes as some partially coagulated blood pooled around her feet. She unconsciously flexed her toes into the ground, welcoming the chilling distraction. It was just blood but it was eerily beautiful, a black pool, smooth as a skipping stone, dark ruby red. The surface tension broke against her claws and flowed over her paws, triggering goosebumps, before seeping into the ground...
Lorelei's words pulled her back in the moment and she stood up, a little unsteady, very nearly losing her footing but recovering at the last second. "I can help hold the uh..." Her eyes skimmed the body, which looked like any carcass at this point, ".. shoulders down. Not sure how much help I'll be but I hate just sitting here while you do all the work."
Post by strawberrycupid on Nov 5, 2019 23:22:10 GMT -5
There was no need for reason or grace in Lorelei's world, just a good meal and a lot of blood. Any and all judgment could be held at her in the end days when nothing really mattered. For today, any thoughts that Blue or anyone had would roll off her like water. She was really happy with her work. While it appeared like any carcass, it was also unnaturally clean. The bones were in a discarded pile to the side, only small chunks of meat remained stuck to them of the fur. It almost looked like one of those bear rugs Lorelei saw the twolegs had. Though upside down and a lot bloodier.
Tanning wasn't really a cat thing, but if they had the stuff, they should use it. Least that's what Lorelei thought. It was almost sad seeing perfectly good bone and skin go to waste. When Blue finally spoke up, Lorelei already had her claws in the skin. The dark pool of blood soaked into the white pelt of the kittypet. "Sure, come up to the front." It would make things a little easier so she was grateful.
Blue had half-hoped to be ignored or dismissed, but it seems she had misread the situation a little. She hesitated for a second then approached the body. Well, she could not really call it a body anymore, it was mostly just bones and a pelt at this point - not even half as intimidating as it had been during the dissection. She put her paws down firmly against the red-and-white shoulders of the deceased, and looked back to Lorelei. She was the real scary one now, with blood and other small gorey bits peppered on her pelt, although Blue only noticed them because she was looking for them.
"OK, I'm ready." Blue had not looked at the kittypet's head and had no plans to change that any time soon. She just hoped that the head removal process would not be too terribly messy.

Lorelei's tongue swiped over her paw, the light taste of blood coating her tongue. Bracing that paw back down on the ground, she resumed the decapitation once Blue had her paws on the head. The calico hummed lightly, of no tune anyone would recognize. It didn't take her long to split the head from the rest of the body. It was a sad display. Once a thriving kittypet was now nothing more than a head and a pile of bones for its twolegs to find. Others would surely feel bad, but this was an every day treat for the League. With a flick of the wrist, the head went tumbling down into the brush, completely forgotten by Lorelei as she picked up the coat.
Blue felt a pang of sympathy for the poor kittypet as his head tumbled out of sight. The weather had been favorable today, not to hot, not too cold, perfect for exploring. Surely it had emboldened him, just as it often does her. His first mistake was venturing this direction. His second was being so naive as to assume that nature had provided him a quick snack; if it looked too good to be true, it probably was.
With the head gone, the pieces left behind were just that; pieces. Blue realized now that she should have had more of a reaction to the decapitation, but, instead, all she felt was extremely hollow, starting at her stomach and going straight to her skull. She let out her unintentionally held breath and removed her paws from the torso.
"You said the ribs go to Elyon?," Blue took some tall grass and deftly wrapped it around the ribs, so they would be easier to carry. Elyon was not so bad and would be easy to find, so she would be more than happy to deliver them. As for the pelt, well, Lorelei was the one that wanted it, so she could deal with it. She was already carrying it, after all. Now that it was so clean, Blue morbidly recognized how effective it might be to use for bedding especially during leaf-bare; however, a rabbit was unarguably a much better option.
Post by strawberrycupid on Nov 10, 2019 17:30:58 GMT -5
Rabbits were also a tad rarer to find in the territory. Lorelei watched Blue's eyes flash a variety of emotions she couldn't recognize. If Funk was still here, he would have pinpointed it easily and may have comforted her. But this was Lorelei, and her best comfort was to gently pat the smaller she-cat on the back with her tail. She was no stranger to horrors like this, but she knew several others would find themselves hollow at the sight. It was sad, awfully so. She gently moved her tail off Blue's back and climbed up one of the trees, laying the pelt against two branches that faced the sun. As the blood would dry, the calico hopped down and stood next to Blue. "Do you want some help?" Lorelei wasn't in the best shape, overly full and covered in blood and chunks. But her voice was warm, and the question was genuine.
