The former WinterClan leader kept to the brush. His belly fur just missing the dried brown grass below his paws. The smell of winter was no longer on his dark brown pelt. Instead it was replaced by a comforting musk of forest and moss. He had been wondering the territories out of sight learning all he could. He had become quite skilled as sneaking around it seemed. Now as he neared the camp where he sensed his old flame he peered through the thicket with a sharp emerald gaze. No point in hiding now. If anything now was the time to be caught. She couldn't ignore him if he walked through her front door. Taking a single step out of the brush he froze as unexpected words met his pricked ears.
"Father?"
-----------------------------------------
Fernpaw was not expecting to see her father stepping through the brush so nonchalantly as if he was just as comfortable under the Sun god's gaze as he was walking on ice. The smaller version of the tom, her own mocha brown pelt pricking with a mixed sense of curiosity and danger. She had heard stories of this tom. despite the few meetings she had with him as a kit. She only knew what she had heard from her mother and rumors. Of his temper and build. Was he here to try to steal her and her brother away again? Somehow this didnt upset her. "Father?" she meowed without thinking. Watching as the larger brown tom froze with ears pricked and shifted his sharp emerald gaze onto her own.

"You shouldn't just run off like that Fernpaw" whined Lionpaw as he pushed straight through the underbrush instead of taking the time to walk around it. Even though he was just a newly appointed apprentice he was already of a similar size to his mother, and if his paws gave any indication he still had quite a bit of growing left to do. He looked like a larger and more rough replica of his mother. He was more muscular, and his fur thicker. As he emerged into the little clearing he looked from Leatherfern to Leatherpaw a confused expression crossing his face. The resemblance between to the two of them was to strong for anyone to deny, and who this cat standing before them was no mystery. This was Leatherfern, their father. He nervously walked forward, thorns and debris still clinging to his pelt "and you definitely shouldn't be talking with him" he to had heard the stories, and even though they hadn't been forbidden from seeing him they had been warned that he might try to weasel his way into their lives. Leatherfern might be their father, but Skipstep was their dad. Skipstep was the one who had helped raised them. The cat before him was a stranger in all but name.

"A bold statement from such a young cat." Pride seeped from Leatherferns pelt as he cast his bright gaze across his kits. Fernpaw being a near picture perfect replica of himself. He could see the cool collected nature in her eyes. And his son, a purr ignited in his chest, was a striking image of both Littlebird and Goldenstar. He dipped his head in greeting to each in turn before relaxing his muscular form. "Don't raise your fur at me child." He meowed his voice holding a ring of humor in it. "I am not here to sweep you away. The life of a rogue is no life for kits. I am here strictly to visit and speak with your mother."
Fernpaw glanced over her shoulder at her brother Lionpaw. She held a questioning glint in her own emerald gaze. Could they trust his words? It seemed so far he hadn't attempted anything more than crossing the border. Littlebird would want to know he was here though, especially considering Foxstar's current predicament.

"And what makes you think she wants to talk to you" he narrowed his eyes, his fur still bristling. He was a pacifist, but he loved his family. Leathernfern being here would only bring more heartache and drama into their lives, and he wanted no part in it. Honestly he was more hurt than angry. Leatherfern had been with so many she-cats since he had been with his mom. He hadn't learned about this until recently at a gathering, but he had half-siblings in many of the clans and there were probably more that he didn't know of. Everytime Littlebird had told them her story, she had stated that the two of them had been in love. If it had been real love, then he would have never acted like that. Sure his mom had taken Skipstep as a mate, but she didn't get with every tom that winked at her. Littlebird probably would want to know that he was here, but he wasn't about to let his father just roam around on SunClan's land. With a small huff he added "SunClan's lands are sacred, if you want to talk to her you should have waited at the border. You are not here to join the clan, so if you don't wait outside of our borders than we will have to chase you away" he didn't really think that the two of them could take on Leatherfern by themselves, but they would be honor bound to try.It was part of the sunclan code, and he had always tried to follow his mother's example

Fernpaw shuffled awkwardly in her spot looking at her fathers paws. Would she join her brother in running Leatherfern away? Her head told her she would but her heart told her she wouldn't. She had too many questions. She wanted to know this cat who's reflection she always saw staring back at her in puddles. It was something so profound she knew Lionpaw would never be able to understand. He looked like Littlebird. He didn't see a stranger when he lapped at water. "Maybe we should escort him. No point in chasing him back to the border only to turn around and bring him right back." she meowed, hoping the logic in her words would distract her brother from the hope hidden in her tone. She shifted her gaze to lock with her brothers. Maybe he would see the war she waged in her eyes.
Leatherfern could see now was no time to speak. While he had a cleaver quip ready for his son, his daughter seemed to have her own way of soothing the drift at least for now. He watched her manipulate the situation to make perfect logic and yet give her what he could see was her own agenda. Maybe there was still some hope for him and at least one of his kits. Though he knew as a father, he would never give up on proving himself worthy to Lionpaw. He wasn't all the stories had to say and much more than what littlebird, he was sure, had divulged about him.

"You know the rules Fernpaw" he replied sternly, before looking up at Leatherfern. It was like looking at a mountain of muscles, a mountain that had claws. The last thing he wanted to do was fight him, and yet that is what the SunCLan code called for. He could tell that Fernpaw wanted to spend more time with him before their mother got involved, but at the same time what she was suggesting was against the rules. He disliked breaking rules, but breaking his sister's heart seemed worse... "but if that is really what you want to do, then fine. However, you get to tell mom and dad that this whole thing was your idea. They are not going to be happy about us just leading him through the territory on our own" He was reluctant to agree, but at least he let her do his it might keep her out of trouble later. He knew his sister well, and the more something was forbidden, the more she would want to do it. If he didn't let them talk now, she would find a way later on.

She resisted the urge to purr. While she was pleased her brother and her had such a strong connection and understanding of one another she was equally aware there was no point in trying to fight off their father. He would easily pin them both and carry them back to littlebird by their scruffs. No matter how big they were he was a full grown tom with lives to spare. "Do you want to lead Lionpaw? I will pick up the rear." she meowed. Once more wanting to make it seem like she was giving her brother a chance to do a warriors task when in reality she really wanted room to speak to Leatherfern without seeming too eager.
Leatherfern watched them interact. It was like watching a well oiled machine. They seemed to be complete opposites and yet when they rubbed those differences together they did not create fire but more a cool water of understanding. Fascinating.

"I think he should walk between use. If memory serves he already knows the way" he raised one eyes skeptically, but didn't give either of them much of an option. He didn't trust Leatherfern, and didn't want to allow either of them out of his sight. If something happened to Fernpaw due to his decision he wouldn't be able to forgive himself. Besides he had his own questions for their father, though his intentions were not to get to know him, but to ease his own hurt. The biggest question on his mind was why? Why had Leatherfern been with so many other she-cats? Why hadn't Leatherfern joined SunClan to be with them? Why was he here now?

Fernpaw resisted a sigh and simply fell in place on Leatherfern's opposite side. While she didn't trust the dark tom either she could likely run faster than the burly tom. just like her speed outdid Lionpaw in races. She kept her pelt from brushing Leatherfern's. A breeze of space still left between them. She wasn't ready for that. She needed answers. But now she felt like here wasn't the place to ask. Maybe when it was time to leave, if the meeting went well enough, littlebird would allow her to escort him out of SunClan alone.
The short journey to the secluded camp where the high priestess rested was silent and felt like moons of padding in unison. She braced herself for any negative attention to assault the trio when they broke through the brush.
Skipstep was sitting beside Littlebird, relaxing and sharing a rabbit with her. Then his ears pricked at the sounds of paw steps and he lifted his head recognizing the scent of his kits. He let out a purr.
"Hey Fernpaw, Lion-" All good naturedness died when he laid eyes on Leatherfern. Instead cold fury turned his dark blue gaze to ice, and he was immediately on his paws and walking forwards, each pawstep resolute. "Fernpaw, Lionpaw go to your mother." He said firmly. Voice holding no room for argument. He wished he hadn't sent Jetclaw away. She would've been already on Leatherfern ready to rip him limb from limb in her righteous fury, allowing Skipstep the ability to get Lionpaw and Fernpaw away quickly.
As it were he had to get Lionpaw and Fernpaw away from Leatherfern before he could attack the tom and make him regret imposing on his family again.
"Did you forget what Foxstar told you the last time you barged in here and caused a disturbance." Skipstep said icily, putting emphasis on barged in and disturbance. The kits needed to learn that Leatherfern's presence was unwanted and unpleasant for all of them.

Fernpaw hesitated. One paw raised to obey the other firmly set feeling a primal urge to defend Leatherfern. Nonetheless she dipped her head and cast Leatherfern a blank glance before padding to lionpaw and brushing past him farther into the den. Her face was blank as she glanced at her mother.
Leatherfern remained cool and expressionless. He watched his kits walk into the darkness before flicking his emerald gaze back to Skipstep. The tom who played house with the love of his life. "Afternoon Skipstep. Nice to see you too."

Littlebird stiffened as the scent of Leatherfern reached her nose, mingled with that of her kits. The fur along her spine began to raise as she stood, assuming the worst. As the three of them entered into camp, a wave of relief washed over her that Lionpaw and Fernpaw seemed unhurt, as Skipstep told them to join her. As their children entered into her den behind them she stepped between the den and where Leatherfern now stood. SunClan cats began to emerge from all around them, hisses filling the air. It was only the presense of Lionpaw and Fernpaw that prevented Littlebird from allowing her warriors to engage him. She didn't want them to witness their father being ripped to shreds. She walked forward boldly intertwining her tail with Skipsteps, knowing that it would irritate Leatherfern. Her harsh golden gaze fell upon him "You are not welcome here, Leatherfern" the stern words echoed through SunClan's camp, as the warriors around them fell silent.

"Aw good to see you are well. Am I the last to know Littlebird? I felt a stirring and thought perhaps you were ill. Pregnancy wasn't quite what I expected though." he gave a coy grin. His face showing a willingness to play her game while his eyes examined her like a medicine cat fretting over a new patient. Worry glazing his emerald gaze as he looked at her. He knew she was pregnant. He was lying of course that he thought it was anything else. Yet the fear of how difficult her last pregnancy was urged him to lay his own eyes on her to be sure she was okay. Skipstep couldn't save her life if his kits were the eventual death of her. Only he could give her a life and he would protect the ones he had in case she needed them. Foxstar wasn't dead yet.
Fernpaw stared out from the darkness. She was frustrated with the treatment of her father. Was there no respect for the children? Yet she understood. She knew the rules and the laws set so strictly in SunClan. Yet her heart was more and more conflicted. Wait pregnancy? Her ear pricked. Were Littlebird and Skipstep expecting kits?
Skipstep glared at him. "The only thing risking to trouble her, is you Leatherfern." He said flatly. "You are not welcome here, you might have been the one to help donate your genetics to Littlebird's kits, but you are not their father." He looked back at the children, then he turned back to Leatherfern, and sneered. "That's all you do though, throw your genetics around to have plenty of children, and yet be a father to none. Much less a mate to any of the she cats you welcomed to your nest." He turned and nudged Littlebird gently in affection. "Whereas I've never left Littlebird, and never will. I am sworn to her till I die, unlike you who claims as such and yet acts quite the opposite. Your hypocrisy is unwanted."
Jetclaw came up by Lionpaw and Fernpaw, standing protectively near the den, teeth barred as she glared at Leatherfern. "Just say the word Littlebird, and I'll tear him limb from limb," The tan and black she cat practically shaking with the desire to rend into Leatherfern's flesh.

Even though her remained calm and collected, there was little doubt that he would feel the fury burning within her like a searing flame. If he had any clue how much damage he was doing, would he have acted the same? Did he realize that what he had just revealed to the clan could cause an even bigger rift? No the look on his face said it all. This was all to get a rise out of her, and she wouldn't give him the satisfaction"See him out" she ordered, turning away without a glance in his direction. He had done enough damage for one day, now it was time to try to contain it What he had just done would only put her in danger, but could very well tear sunclan apart if not handled in the right way. While kits were always welcome in the clan, many would fear her pregnancy. With Foxstar gone, she was the only leader that they had, and last time her pregnancy had almost killed her.
Jetclaw nodded and strode forwards, the tan and black she cat's head held high as she stepped up. "All right, turn and walk or I'm happy to enlist other warriors to help drag you." She said eyes gleaming a dark promise of how serious she was.
Skipstep sneered at Leatherfern, before turning and going back to Littlebird tail held high. His dominance clear as he pressed in close to Littlebird matching her step for step leaving his sister to deal with removing Leatherfern however she saw fit.

Leatherfern's eyes glinted as he willingly began to turn away. Only to look back over his broad shoulder at littlebird. Voice strong and loud. "You know you have painted a false image of me. Even to Skipstep. I think you owe him and your kits the truth Littlebird." he simply flicked his tail at Skipstep in a simple dismissive goodbye. His back bending as he turned his full form away and began to walk.
"Wait!" Fernpaw pressed past her Skipstep and Littlebird leaving Lionpaw back in the den. "I want to come along." she meowed her head high, shoulders back and her own emerald eyes glinting with a familiar light that shown many times in Leatherfern's own gaze.
The mocha tom stopped and swung his head around to meet his daughter's gaze. Before meeting Littlebirds an eyebrow raised. Would she disappoint her daughter and risk igniting that WinterClan fury that lay dormant so far under the sun god's influence? She was after all... the grand daughter of a tyrant and the daughter of two natural leaders.
Fernpaw turned those same emerald eyes onto her mother.
"Why in the Sun God's name would you want to go with him?!" Jetclaw gasped gaping at Fernpaw. "He's a menace! This is the third time he's come in and made a mess of our family's life! He barged in while your mother was at her weakest point, then he led an attack to try and steal you away from your mother, and now he's here again trying to hurt your mother. Your mother is going to have siblings for you! If you go with him you might never see them!"
Skipstep frowned at Fernpaw. Unsure what to say. "Why do you want to go with him?" He asked much more calmly than Jetclaw did. Though his voice was tight, and the glare he sent towards Leatherfern could melt mountains with it's heat. Though Jetclaw shook with her barely restrained rage and hatred, Skipstep's was turning supernova inside, his dislike for Leatherfern increasing ten fold.

Littlebird shook her head, walking forward and letting her tail to rest on her young shoulders "You have questions, its only natural" she paused looking over at Leatherfern with narrowed eyes, all to aware of the game he was playing. If she forbid Fernpaw from going now, she might just well loose her forever. As much as it pained her, she had little choice but to relent "You should go with him, escort him to the border. Singedwolf and Lionpaw will go with you" he was the one cat that she had no doubt about being able to defend her children, nor would he spread the words that were spoken between them. She didn't think Leatherstar would harm her physically, but we he said.... She feared what that might do to her relationship with her daughter. "When you return we will talk, all of us" she looked over to where Lionpaw stood, his fur fluffed out in utter disbelief. They were old enough to make their own decisions now, they were not the same kits that she could one hold with one paw. She turned her attention to Leatherstar "Best watch what you say and do around my daughter and son" she warned with a growl rumbling deep in her throat
