Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
She was not a known name, did not strike fear into cats hearts, no she was still just a boogeyman of cliche nature. There were those that knew she existed and feared her more for her home rather than for her own monstrous capabilities. She was not yet sure if she wanted them to fear her more personally yet though. There was merit in being a monster with no definition past being just yet another shadow to watch out for. From what Mother E'tani understood half of Vera's downfall lied in being too known. For casting a name that brought to much direct fear and caused others to strike out more viciously. Mother E'tani hoped to avoid that as long as possible, content for now with being a mere shade.
Her paws carried her across soft earth and she marveled at the life around them. It felt wrong for Sigmund and herself to be traversing it, as if they brought the rot of their own home just with their very presence. Placid expression showing nothing of her turbulent thoughts, as always being as forthcoming as a statue cut from marble. Sigmund trailed beside her and she hummed as she thought towards the part he would be playing in this charade. Hopefully he would be able to suitably master this new role, to tame back his normal overacting as an unhinged paranoid mess and bring it towards something a little more loveable. They needed for his part to played flawlessly, for if he failed at his task then half the insurance in this plot went lost.
Reaching the border of Summerclan she paused and decided they would wait rather than grossly trespass against the new leaders borders. So new her cats had only brought her the news recently, she doubted he had even settled yet. Probably still feeling lost and out of place in the leaders den and that is what they needed after all.
Doefreckle was feeling precisely all of those things. It felt so wrong to sleep in the leader’s den, like he was just a little apprentice that had crept in and stowed away, like Ravenstar was going to wander in any moment and tell him he didn’t belong there, that it had all been some cosmic joke, that he would never have a place in SummerClan, let alone as leader. He didn’t even have his new name yet – he was expected to lead his Clan, and, right now, there was nothing separating him from them: he still had just one life, he still had his warrior name, he was just… inadequate.
And so, he was wandering the territory, because it was one of his healthier coping mechanisms in a long, long list of far worse alternatives, and it was infinitely better than circling round and round in a nest that felt both too soft and too hard in a den that felt both too small and far too large. It was also better than pacing around the den, or lurking in the camp clearing and hoping someone would wake up and offer a distraction, or… really any of the things he’d been doing for the last few nights. The world around him was dark and quiet, the stars hidden behind thin, drifting clouds and the air sweet with wildflowers. Crickets chirped softly from the tall grass all around him.
He stopped and closed his eyes, raising his head to the night sky as he breathed in the cool air; he imagined he could feel it lacing through his veins and leaving flowers blooming in its wake. A twig snapped and he opened his eyes, glancing towards the woods and bowing his head as he peered into the darkness, taking a few prowling steps along the tree line. As his vision adjusted to the gloom, he could just make out two shapes sitting among the pine trees like ghouls. He opened his mouth to taste the air and caught a scent he’d only ever known from traces on the wind – Primal Instinct. Instinctive fear made his fur prickle. Every kit was raised on horror stories of the nightmare cats that lurked in the shadows, cats who tortured and killed for the sheer pleasure of it.
Licking his lips nervously, he took a step backwards, and then a step forward, and then stopped altogether at the meeting point of moonlight and shadows, one paw raised uncertainly in the air. The light of the moon washed over his fur, turning it silvery. “What—uh, I don’t mean to sound ungracious but… can I help you?”
Mother watched him, watched his hesitance and held back the sharp grin that wanted to curve across her features. She knew better, because where Sigmund overacted Mother was the foil that never reacted. It was there way, had been their way since she took him from where she found him stuck in a garbage can and didn't kill him in his sleep. "Are you Doefreckle?" She asked letting her tone hold just enough curiosity to keep him from spooking enough to run. The answer seemed rather obvious to her, a common warrior would likely catch there scent and flee rather than have the... audacity, to ask if they could help them.
Not that she had missed how he himself had likely considered it, but she supposed she couldn't fault him for being a fool then. Only the dumbest of cats would catch the scent of to league cats on their border and not consider running. She wondered if his decision to speak to them alone was pushed by some innate desire to prove himself; from her understanding clans cats cared about what their subordinates thought of them. Earned their positions through silly things like respect and personalities. Mother E'tani had earned her position by taking advantage of a dying cat Backing them into a corner and striking a one sided deal.
She didn't know where Marchosais had wandered off to, last she heard he was wandering the clan territories and seeing the sights. If needed she would send Elyon or Sigmund to kill him should he show signs of thinking of returning. Their deal prohibited his return for at-least another 6 moons should he care to return. "I'm Mother E'tani and this is Sigmund, we're here to talk to Doefreckle." She didn't name Sigmunds position because he wasn't here as her warden. He was here as a hunter she had brought along for simple company on a long journey.
Contrary to what Mother E'tani may have been thinking in her internal monologue, Doefreckle was only a little dumb - his main problem was that he was far too trusting, far too curious, and far too kind-hearted. Mix that in with an instinctive need to self-destruct and you got what was commonly deemed in polite society to be a total mess. "I'm, uh— yes, I—I'm Doe...freckle." He glanced around awkwardly, not entirely sure how he was meant to proceed; he'd never been one for chasing trespassers off his territory, but now that he was leader, he supposed that was more or less expected of him. At the same time, though, these were League cats, and there were two of them, and he... had a bad leg. The point is, the odds weren't good.
So, he forced a shaky smile that he hoped look at least a little hospitable and continued sheepishly, "I'm sorry, I'm a little confused. You're here to speak to me why, exactly? Not that I'm not delighted you've sought me out!" He added in a rush. "A little surprised, perhaps - I don't know you, so I'm, y'know, I'm," he let out an airy little laugh, "wondering just how you know me - but mostly delighted! Hi, Sigmund." He leaned to the side to smile at the... whatever they called warriors in the League... before returning his attention to Mother. Who he assumed was the leader. If she wasn't, this whole thing just got a whole lot more confusing. "So, you, uh, want to talk to me?" He sat down warily and gestured with his tail for them to approach. "You're not gonna murder me, are you? The ol' chat-and-kill? Spot of assassination in the moonlight?" He let out a nervous laugh that died in his throat. It didn't feel like much of a joke to him. "Sorry. What can I do for you?"
Sigmund's ears perked at the leader's greeting and the tom dipped his head respectfully. "Hi Doefreckle! Mother E'tani has told me a lot about you! I hope we can be very best friends!" The tom beamed a flashy smile. It was hard to believe the tom was a member of Primal Instinct, one of the most deadly groups living in the forest. The tom took one of his back legs and began to scratch at one of his usual balding spots. One eye closed as if he had found the spot of a life-time that itched constantly. It was obvious he was simply going to let Mother E'tani do all the talking. Not that he wasn't capable of speaking for himself, but simply because he had no idea what Mother E'tani exactly wanted out of Doefreckle himself. The nemesis had simply woke him up in the morning and told them they were traveling to Summerclan with no other explanation. Not that he assumed that Mother didn't have a plan. No, he was fully aware there was a plan in the works here. Mother E'tani needed Doefreckle, or rather soon to be Doestar.
