Tuskblood entered the cleared-out hollow that made up one of Summerclan's training zones with her chin high and gaze expectant. Her and Pebblefur had been tasked with gearing up a batch of apprentices for their futures as warriors. Some of them were young, others had a few moons of experience already. Her own apprentice, Crimsonpaw, was a part of this new group. She had great plans to utilizing the formidable tom. He would set a good example for the young ones.
Her plumy black tail twitched impatiently as she waited for the tots to arrive. "Crimsonpaw, Aspenpaw, Fiercepaw, Angelpaw, and Patchpaw." She repeated their names out loud, trying to memorize them before they arrived. It would be difficult to keep up with so many balls of post-kitten fluff. However, this was how her old stronghold prepared their trainees so she knew it was possible.
Pebblefur followed Tuskblood, her calico fur illuminating in the daylight. Though her gaze was soft, she was clearly trying to hide the anxiety within their depths. This was a lot of apprentices to train and she had never trained so many at one time. She was grateful to have Tuskblood along with her though. She was sure the two of them would make a good team. "What do you think we should train them first?" she asked Tuskblood. She wondered if a trip around the territory was necessary since some of them already had some training.

Crimsonpaw came bounding into the hollow, excited at the prospect of training with four other apprentices. At first he didn't really like this new idea of group training and sharing his personal mentor with other apprentices, part of him even now still resented it, but the newness of this kind of training intrigued him. "Hi!" he meowed to Tuskblood and Pebblefur. "What're we going to do first?" He hoped it was going to be something fun. The last thing he wanted to do was traipse around the territory that he'd already seen with a bunch of green apprentices.

Tuskblood thought about it for a moment. Hunting or battling? It was difficult to choose which one would benefit the pairs more. In the strongholds, they learned both at once because their prey was a bit larger than mice and squirrels. "Let's do both hunting and battling today." She decided with a gruff nod. Her eyes flicked to Crimsonpaw and she beckoned the tom forward with her tail. "Would you like to help teach while learning, young one?" She questioned him with a curious look. It would be a good time to teach him how to be a leader and a follower.
Pebblefur nodded in agreement to Tuskblood's decision. Then smiled when she asked the young tom if he wanted to help teach. That would be a good lesson for him. For all of them, really. But what good would that do if all of them were leaders? Perhaps they would learn from Crimsonpaw how to be a good team leader. Whatever Tuskblood's plan was, she trusted the deputy. She had more experience than Pebblefur ever would. But Pebblefur was there to help in any way she could. She would rather have Tuskblood take the lead on this but she would help out whenever Tuskblood asked or whenever she thought she needed to step in.
She snapped her attention back to the present and waited for Crimsonpaw to give his answer to the deputy. Lucky apprentice. She was sure most of the other apprentices would be jealous. She knew she would be.

"Sure!" Crimsonpaw answered eagerly. He was pleased he was singled out among the other apprentices. "I'd be happy to." He moved over to Tuskblood and stood next to her. "Just let me know what you want me to do." Then he added to Pebblefur, "Tuskblood's a really good mentor. I've learned a lot already." His eyes wandered over to the entrance to the training hollow. When are the others going to arrive?

"I am," Crimsonpaw agreed. He felt privileged to have been given to the deputy to be trained. But now this group thing was different. He still wasn't convinced it would be better than the old arrangement. Maybe it was because he had to share his mentor with four other apprentices. But there was nothing he could do to change the situation. "Did you have an apprentice before the change in the way we train?" he asked Pebblefur.
"Actually, no" She admitted to the apprentice, but she didn't seem to be upset about it. "I'm honored to train so many apprentice's at once without having experience with one of my own."

Crimsonpaw wondered if Pebblefur would have liked an apprentice of her own but refrained from asking her. "You just might find you'll have your paws full," he laughed. "I'd think just one of us would be trouble enough." He looked around and voiced the concern foremost in his mind. "Aren't the others coming?"

Tuskblood's whiskers twitched irritably as the time continued to pass. "They will have to work in the heat of the day, then." She growled. A part of her was proud that Crimsonpaw had arrived on time, but she felt no sympathy for the others. She turned her gaze on Pebblefur and nodded. "Crimsonpaw has been a good apprentice. He learns quickly and has a strong sense of responsibility. I figured him helping could hone his leadership skills. If you have any ideas or advice for him or the others, feel free to chip in. I can sometimes overstep." Her rough voice was respectful as she addressed the warrior. To her, Pebblefur worked just as hard to become a skilled warrior and could pass down plenty of knowledge to the young ones.
Patchpaw drifted into the clearing, her tail and head down. "I'm sorry, Tuskblood and Pebblefur." She started, ears burning with shame. Truthfully, the nightmares had grown stronger each night and she accidentally lost track of time. Not to mention, her mother's passing had taken quite the toll on the formerly-cheerful apprentice.
Pebblefur dipped her head respectfully to Tuskblood, "Thank you, Tuskblood." Her ears perked as Patchpaw padded up. She felt bad for the apprentice. She was going through a lot and she hoped the deputy would be easy on her. "No worries, Patchpaw. Glad to have you join us!" Pebblefur's voice was soft and cheery. A good mixture of happy and sympathetic. A voice that could lift spirits and make a cat feel good just by hearing it.

Tuskblood would usually reprimand an apprentice for showing up late, but given the circumstances she chose to let the gentler Pebblefur handle it. She gave a brisk nod to the apprentice before waving her tail to Crimsonpaw. "Why don't you two go ahead and start practicing. A little extra learning before the others get here will put you at an advantage. Crimsonpaw, why don't you show her some defense moves while Pebblefur and I watch?"
Patchpaw gave Pebblefur a grateful glance, glad that the warrior was understanding and that the deputy didn't scold her. "Oh, okay." She responded shyly then turned to face Crimsonpaw.

"Defense moves, right," the reddish apprentice meowed. He was so pleased from Tuskblood's praise that he could hardly think of any. "Um ... how about the counter move for the front paw strike?" It was one of the first attacks taught to apprentices. "Do you know that attack?" he asked Patchpaw.

"Sorry I'm late!" An apprentice practically the size of an average cat came running into the clearing, her long black fur disheveled and filled with feathers. She had been up since before the sun doing some hunting practice and had some difficulties with a bird in particular. "What should I do?" She asked, looking up at Tuskblood, her eyes shining with admiration. She was especially glad that the deputy had been made her mentor.

Crimsonpaw turned and scowled at the interruption. Figures she'd be late, he thought as he listened to her explanation to the two mentors. He turned his attention back to the apprentice he was working with, Patchpaw.

Tuskblood couldn't help but smile at her half-sister. However, she vowed not to treat her more favorably than the rest. "It's fine for today, but make sure you are early next time or you'll be in charge of gathering bedding." She snorted, flicking Fiercepaw on the ear with her tail. "Now, since we are still waiting on others, how about you partner with one of us. Pebblefur, what do you think?"
Patchpaw's muzzle twitch for a moment as she went over the moves she had learned before in her head. "Uh, I'm sorry...I don't think I remember it that well. Would you mind showing me?"

"Sure," Crimsonpaw meowed. He was happy to be able to show off what he already learned. "If the attack is coming at your head you can do this." He turned to the left swinging his right front paw across his body to the left. "Done correctly, the attacker will completely miss you and you'll score a scratch on their leg. See if you can do it." He quickly shot his paw out toward Patchpaw's head.

Firecepaw nodded obediently to her older half-sister and glowered at Crimsonpaw. She had noticed his scowl and now he acted as if he were better than the rest of them? Ridiculous. She remained quiet, however, and listened with a hint of annoyance. He wasn't the only one who had been training for a long time after all. "Sure, which one of you should I team up with?" She asked, looking between the two cats. She was already pebblefur's size but tuskblood was bigger than her.

Patchpaw's eyes widened, having zoned out for just a second. She hadn't been very aware of anything since her mother's death. She attempted to duck and swing her paw out like Crimsonpaw, but she lost her balance and nearly fell over. "Mouse-dung." She muttered as she regained her footing.
"How about you team up with me for now. Pebblefur could probably coach me on a few things also." She snorted and gave the other mentor a nod. It had been a while since she mock battled against someone smaller than her. Then again, most cats were smaller than her. Fiercepaw was actually larger than most of the others. It would be a good experience for her to battle against someone with the same struggles of a large frame.
