Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Sundial rested her head on her forepaws as she watched the sun go down. After a long and tiring day, she enjoyed nothing more than to sit above ground and watch; not a scout, not a mother, just a silent observer of nature. It was calming, but lately, it had not meant as much as it once had. She was… lonely. Her son was becoming a proud father, and she was glad for him, but she was becoming older and her chances of finding love were dwindling. She had it once, twice, but she had choose poorly, and now both toms she loved were gone. They had found someone else, but she had nothing - even friends that hadn't left her were scarce. She had her son and his family, but it wasn't the same as having her own.
"It's a beautiful day to be out is it not?" Mars had been out for a walk after finishing up his duties for the day. It was something he enjoyed really since, for a time, he had lived outside of the tunnels and away from the Regime. He sat down beside her after a moment. He had heard her sigh, but decided it might not be a good idea to pry. Instead, he just offered her one of his charming smiles. "Do you enjoy watching the sunset? I used to try and make it out of the tunnels most every night to watch it before I became Mercenary Superior."
"It is." Sundial turned her head slightly to see the Mercenary Superior, and offered him a warm, tired smile. "I do as well; ever since I was a tyke. When Father came to visit he'd always let us come up to the surface with him, until Mother got angry and made us go back down. I was spellbound from the start, though." She curled her tail around her paws. She didn't know Mars well, which was strange, given they were family now, though his sister Diana and her son Hurricane.
"I never got to go to the surface much honestly." He grinned, showing off white teeth as he did so. "My mother kept me very close to her for much of my tykehood. I suppose it was natural though. She didn't think I would ever be able to walk properly." He turned his attention back up to the sky. "She did always want to come out here though and some nights even I wouldn't mind sleeping under the stars." Of course he'd never abandon the Regime, but it would be nice to have a change of pace.
Couldn't walk properly? Sundial wasn't sure why, she couldn't think of any kit having that problem, but it had been a long time and she could easily have forgotten. "I don't know if I would be so bold. It seems dangerous to be so exposed... any predator could stumble upon you and take you on before you could even wake up properly." Shivering, her short coat puffed up a little at the thought.
"I was born with weak hind legs. I couldn't use them at all to start with. Mother worked with me for a very long time to help me walk. I was promoted late because of it even. Apollo, Diana, and Venus were all promoted ahead of me first to cadet and then to Soldier because I wanted to be a mercenary." He didn't mind sharing his past really. It had never really bothered him in the first place. "Well it depends on how you go about things. If you find cover and then make a nest, it's really not that bad sleeping above ground. It can get a bit cold sometimes honestly, but its still not that bad.
Sundial listened to his story. It did sound somewhat familiar; maybe she'd heard about him but hadn't put it all together until now. She nodded slowly, sympathetically, but with a touch of pride. It was a mark of the Regime's determination, as well as his own, that instead of giving up on him he'd been raised to a powerful Mercenary Superior. "I think I'd rather just spend my nights safe underground. Coming up to watch the stars and the sun is enough for me." It was warm and comfortable in her den, and even if she did not have someone to share her nest, the post was her family. She didn't feel quite as alone when they were around her.
Mars just chuckled as he kept his gaze trained on the sky. "Coming out here always makes it easy to clear my head though. At other times, I usually go talk to Venus. It does help to have someone you can talk to you know." He had looked back at her as he said this, but soon his gaze was on the sky again.
She looked away at his last comment, down toward her paws. "Yeah," she murmured, softer, "it is." Sundial was quiet for a few more moments. "I used to talk with Anthony. He didn't understand why I liked the surface so much, not really, but he would listen anyway." Her former mate had been a great cat - solid, dependable, kind, and a strong addition to the clan. Why couldn't she have kept him? He was perfect... and yet her chemistry with Mycroft had been irresistible, and when she'd birthed his kits it had been the end of her relationship with Anthony. She understood, though it pained her to know she had messed up so terribly.
Mars was silent for a moment as if he were contemplating his next response. He didn't know the full situation honestly so he didn't want to say something that might make things worse. Finally, he shook his head. "You know, sometimes I wonder why things happen the way they do. I wonder why good cats have to suffer while evil ones seem to prosper. I've always had so many questions and I've never really found the answers I need. I have learned one thing though. When the past is painful, make a better future for yourself." He offered her a kind smile. It was odd to think that he was repeating words his mother had said to him shortly before her death. She had wanted him to move on with his life, to become everything he wanted to be. He'd done just that even if he'd gotten lost on the way. "Even if it's hard, we have the rest of the Regime to fall back on. One of our best traits is that we help each other."
The words rang a sad truth in her mind. Her mate had done nothing wrong, but he had been the true victim of events, not herself. She hadn't been able to resist her own temptations, and had given in to her own selfish desires. And in truth, she didn't even know why. She should have been happy where she was, she had been happy, but then she had thrown it all away. Maybe there was her answer, then - he was too good, and she was a creature of chaos, as much as she preached order. As much as the thought comforted her, she knew it was never that simple, and her crime must run deeper than that.
Make a better future.
She looked up at him with a trace of a joyless mirth on her lips. "I think it's a little too late for that," she replied softly. Maybe Sundial was not old enough to be a Veteran yet, she had many moons left before then, but she felt like her soul had aged faster than her body, and it would expire first. The only future she could see was that of her family and her group, not herself.
"It's never to late to do better for yourself." After all, he had hit rock bottom before he had come back to the Regime and now he stood as the Commander. It was hard to believe considering the fact that he'd left like he had. Fjord had been kind enough to welcome him home and from then on out he had worked hard to prove himself. "It's not easy, but...Everyone can do better for themselves. All they have to do is try."
Wasn't it? It felt like it was too late - or that it should be. It didn't feel fair that she could ruin her own life with one bad choice after another, then still have a chance to redeem herself, while other cats suffered for no reason at all. She had to accept that her life was destroyed, because of her own actions; she couldn't accept that she could fix it, and it would all go away. It felt wrong to be given another chance to change things.
Quiet, she raised her gaze to the sky again. She had no answer for the Commander, but after a breath, she moved on.
"Are you sure about all this, Commander? How can you be so optimistic, after all the troubles we've had?"
"When I was young, someone told me something that has gotten me through many tough times. She told me that life was far to short to focus on your mistakes. Focus on the better parts of life and be happy." He let his tail rest on her shoulder. "We all make mistakes, but dwelling on them doesn't help. Learn from your mistakes and push forward. It's the only way to get through life." He had learned this the hard way. Then again that was how he learned just about anything. "If I had accepted my plot in life as a tyke and became a guider or a Raiser, I wouldn't be where I am today. You just have to be stubborn enough to make the change."
(Mars is starting to sound like a sage or something like that and he's far too young for that cx)
(wise child commander and confused middle-aged lady looking for help c'x)
For now, she allowed herself to be comforted by his touch and his words. She wasn't sure if they would provide lasting relief, but for now she didn't dwell on the future, just let him ease her worries. She breathed deeply, then exhaled and shook her head, looking over with a hint of amusement in her gaze. "You almost sound like one of the Veterans, Commander," she mrrowed. "Careful you don't let anyone else hear you're so wise, or they'll try and put you in the wrong den. You're still young, you're supposed to be concerned with getting into trouble and having a good time, not giving advice to someone like me."
"I've....I've lost a lot in my lifetime. It really makes you think about things you know. I wouldn't call myself wise or anything close to it. I'm really just repeating things I was told when I was younger." Of course most of it had been advice that his mother had given him when he was younger. He honestly hadn't expected to be repeating it now or really ever. "Although...I wouldn't mind spending some time in the Veteran's den. It is supposed to be warmer there than in other parts of the tunnels." Of course the last part was a joke, but the tunnels could actually get cold every now and then.
Sundial snorted affectionately. "Warmer doesn't mean warm, though. If you believe anything they say, it's still frosty as a nest made of snow - though I'm not sure how they'd know that, anyway." Veteran Watson had been a patient and kind guider for a long time, and he rarely complained, but once he was asked there was no easy way to make him stop. He was a talkative cat, given the chance, and perhaps prone to exaggerations.
"Well I suppose they've earned the right to complain if nothing else. After all they have served the Regime well and have earned their rest." Of course if the cadets had anything to say about that, he was sure they would have them cleaning their own bedding and fetching their own prey. "Perhaps I should have one of the cadets line their nests for the colder weather. It may be a bit easier on older bones." It was something he'd done for his father more than once before his passing and while he still complained he had seemed more comfortable at least.
Sundial could agree with that. If she lived that long, she didn't think she would be of the elders to complain much, but she'd still want to be respected and looked away in the same way they cared for their current veterans. Her head tilted to the side at the Commander's idea, curious. "They might appreciate that," she agreed. "You could ask the scout cadets to find soft material and the raiser cadets to work it into their nest, perhaps."
"That is a good idea. I'll have to see to that when we get back. It might make the colder seasons a bit more bearable for us all. No one likes a grumpy veteran after all. A sparkle of amusement lit his eyes as he said this. "I'll have Venus oversee the lining of the nests for now." He was still trying to decide on who the next raiser superior would be after all. Some had thought he would choose Venus, but his sister honestly wasn't a leader. She enjoyed her peaceful life just as it was so chances were he would be choosing someone else.
