He leaped forward with a snarl, catching his opponent in his forepaws. He rolled and slammed the other cat down, who cried out in distress as he nipped his throat and spilled a drop of blood. Sootpaw had one paw raised ready to strike when Kingkit let loose an ear-splitting caterwaul of agony. Startled, the apprentice stumbled back, and the fluffy white kitten sprang to his paws, sobbing in fear as he felt one paw to the pinprick of blood welling from his throat and fled toward the nursery. Sootpaw scowled after him. He wasn't supposed to just leave while they were training!

"What do you think you're doing to that poor kit?" a voice demanded from behind Sootpaw. "You can get into big trouble being so mean to kits." Pantherpaw moved in closer as she watched Kingkit scamper away hurriedly. "If he was bothering you, a simple cuff on his ears would discourage him." The black she cat looked with disapproval upon her fellow apprentice.
"Training." He raised his paw to study the drop of blood on the tip of his claw, then shook it off and slammed his paw back into the dust. Sootpaw glared bitterly after the kitten. He had just wanted to practice his training moves for a while, and then the weak, cowardly kitten had run off at the first attack! It wasn't fair, how was he supposed to get any better if nobody would help him?

"What?! Are you totally mouse-brained?!" Pantherpaw exclaimed in a hushed voice but in shocked surprise. "Battle training with a kit? You're very fortunate no one else saw you. You can get held back for moons for doing something like that." She looked around furtively to make sure no other cat was indeed around. Wanting to let Sootpaw know she wasn't a tattletale, she added, "Don't worry. I won't say anything about this." Her gaze went back to the nursery. Kingkit just might spill the beans however. That fact didn't need saying so she didn't mention it. In a calmer voice she asked, "Aren't you getting enough battle training with your mentor?"
Sootpaw shrugged his shoulders. "He wanted to," he responded. He wasn't too concerned about getting in trouble for it: they were just playing, that was all, he just wanted to play battle training training and show off some of his moves. Kingkit was just too wimpy. His claws flexed in frustration at Pantherpaw's other question and he shook his head. "No," he muttered. "Froststar is always busy." His kitten excitement at having a leader for a mentor had long faded when he realized they wouldn't spend every moment of their life training together like he wanted.

Pantherpaw just frowned in response to Kingkit's 'wanting to'. She said her piece on the matter and didn't want to sound like a nagging elder. "I can understand," she meowed addressing the training portion of their conversation. "Angelstar was my first mentor and we never trained." It wasn't until after the leader died and when she was assigned to a new mentor, her training really began. "I know it's frustrating." Just then the beginning of an idea struck her and as she thought about it, it grew. "I think I know a way to get some battling in and to do our clan a favor at the same time." She lowered her voice to make sure she wasn't over heard. "I heard Bonefang talking about a fox in the rabbit meadow just this morning. Apparently it got away with his catch. He's worried it'll eat up all our rabbits."
Sootpaw had never been invested in other cats, so he hadn't thought twice about Pantherpaw before this moment. He blinked once, surprised to hear she'd had a similar experience, then lashed his tail. Great; that just meant he was definitely going to have to find some other way to train. He didn't really care if Froststar was busy running the clan, he just wanted to learn something and go out on his own. His ears pricked as she lowered her voice and he tilted his head to the side. A fox? There was a rational voice inside of him that strongly advised against it, but it was quiet he ignored it like he always did, and puffed up his solid grey coat. "Let's go now!"

Excitement coursed through Pantherpaw from ears to tail tip. She felt her breath quicken and her heart begin to pound in her chest. Finally something thrilling and adventurous to do! "Alright!" she meowed as she took off toward the camp's exit. This sure beats helping her brother gather herbs or getting new bedding moss for the nursery or elder's den. She cast a glance at Sootpaw. This wasn't something she'd go off and do on her own. But with two cats together, they'd surly be able to handle a fox, right?
Sootpaw bounded after her, absolutely fearless. There wasn't a doubt in his mind about their actions. He was young, and still struggled with thinking ahead of the moment, or consider consequences or really anything rational; complex mental tasks just didn't suit him, and he never pushed himself to try and improve. Unless something was in front of his muzzle right at that moment, he probably wasn't going to think about it - unless it was his missing mentor, of course, whose lack of presence always spoke for itself.

After splashing through the small creek near the camp, Pantherpaw directed her steps toward the north and west where the stepping stones were located on the main stream. It wasn't a far run and she actually enjoyed the exercise. The feel of the wind in her fur, the pounding of her paws on the soft ground, and the presence of another clanmate running with her made her feel alive! "Bonefang said they were hunting near the stepping stones in the rabbit meadow," she informed Sootpaw.
Sootpaw didn't waste time appreciating his surroundings, though there was something comforting about the familiar track beneath his paws and his own steady, loping gait. They were surrounded by silence, but it was filled with noise as well; the skid of dirt beneath his paws, the wind in his ears, the chimes of critters surrounding them. It was peaceful, and it filled him with certainty. "I guess they like rabbit too." He shook out his dark gray coat and flexed his claws. "But those are our rabbits."

Sootpaw's words filled Pantherpaw with a righteous indignation. It was true! Those rabbits belonged to SummerClan not that fox. She felt her fur rise around her neck as she slowed to a stop at the stepping stones. Even here she could smell the faint odor of rabbit coming off the meadow on the other side of the stream. But that was it except for the familiar scent of SummerClan cats who have recently been here. "I can't smell any fox yet," she announced to Sootpaw. She hopped onto the first stepping stone to go across to the other side.
Sootpaw stopped behind her as she crossed the stones, lifting his muzzle and tasting the air. He couldn't detect fox either. He frowned, sniffing along the bank as well, but when he came up empty he just shrugged and started to carefully cross behind Pantherpaw. "I can't either. We must be too close to the water, it makes the scent go away," Sootpaw suggested. "Once we're past the stream we might have more luck."

Pantherpaw leaped off the last stone and onto the meadow. A light breeze was coming from the west and ruffled her mostly black fur. "I bet you're right," she replied, staring off across the meadow. A patch of tall grass caught her attention farther away from the stream. "I'll look over there," she announced. "It's as good a place as any to start." She made her way over to the grass and stooped over to smell a clump. "Hey!" she called. "I smell Bonefang's scent. He must have passed this way earlier this morning."
Sootpaw made it successfully across behind her and shook out his dark gray fur, proud of his balance. As she left, he went the other way, bounding confidently through the long grasses as they brushed at his side. He sniffed inside of a flower and sneezed, then backed off, shaking his head. He looked around for any visible traces of the fox, some blood or fur, when he heard her call. He turned eagerly back but didn't race toward her yet. "Great! Can you track him?"

"I... I think I can," Pantherpaw replied. She was fairly good at tracking prey but she never tracked a cat - and backwards to boot! All the prey she had followed so far was from behind, heading the same direction as they were going. This was different but she was willing to try even though she was unsure of her backtracking abilities. She scanned the area carefully and smelled other tufts of grass. Another cat scent! She was getting somewhere. "I can smell Lionesspaw too! They were hunting together. This way has got to lead us to the fox." She felt her excitement rise.
He bounded over to join her, bending his head and sniffing along the grass. He could faintly pick up the warrior's trail, but he kept wanting to double back and follow it the way he would prey. Sootpaw wasn't much of a tracker, he was usually too impatient and he wasn't good at noticing signs other than scent. He gave up and sat down, watching Pantherpaw work. When she found another trace, he stood up and trotted over to meet her again. "Great, maybe we're doing in the right direction!"

Looking back toward the stepping stones, Pantherpaw spoke her thoughts out loud. "Yes, we have to be .... because they came out of the meadow this way after they were attacked." She turned her head and looked in the other direction. "So they met the fox somewhere in that direction. Let's go." Feeling a little better about herself now that she had thought out the situation like figuring out a puzzle, she set forth. A few steps later she saw a drop of blood on a leaf attached to a bush then farther she spotted a couple other drops. "Look, a blood trail ... must have brushed their scratches against these leaves ..." She was so absorbed in her new findings what she failed to realize was their own scent was being borne away from them and to whatever might be lying in wait ahead of them.
"Whose blood is it? Fox, prey, or Lionesspaw and Bonefang?" Sootpaw kept close to her side and sniffed at the blood. It smelled like blood. Did prey blood even smell different than cat blood? It might taste different, but Sootpaw wasn't willing to try. He backed up and studied the bush, looking for some fur or any indication that the cats had been here.

The whole area had an underlying smell of rabbit because of the population that lived in the area so it was hard for Pantherpaw to tell if it was rabbit blood. "I ... I think it's Bonefang's," she replied. "His scent is stronger here." She kept moving farther into the meadow until she heard the sound of something coming fast from her right. She stopped and stood still until a rabbit came bolting across in front of her but several fox lengths away. It disappeared in the tall grass as fast as it came. Pantherpaw relaxed. "Oh, it was just a rabbit." Just then another sound came from the right and suddenly a red blur crossed in front of her following the rabbit.
