Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. "Squirrel's good," Stalkerjaw quipped as he began to follow behind Honeycomb, falling into a comfortable silence as she led them through the woods to the stream. Hearing her comment he also lifted his nose to the air, catching the familiar scents of prey in the area. Mice and Voles were common this time of year, which was a relief; he had more experience catching smaller prey than birds or rabbits. At least he wouldn't make a fool of himself in front of his new...friend? Was that what this was? He glanced over at the she-cat, uncertain. It had been a long time since he last had called someone that.

The honey colored she cat nodded at Stalkerjaw's comment. Too bad I didn't catch that other squirrel, she thought. She enjoyed being in this tom's company. It had been sometime since she she had hunted with another cat while not being on an official hunting patrol. It was kind of nice. Then the smells turn her thoughts back to the matter at hand - hunting. There were too many good scents here for her to pass up. Choosing one left by a vole, she stealthily made her way to the water's edge.
Stalkerjaw was honestly impressed by how quickly his hunting partner had picked up a scent and went off to catch it. It took the bulky tom slightly longer to pinpoint a specific prey to track, hunting really wasn't his strong point, and he did his nest to croutch down and slowly stalk over to a nearby tree hollow, where he assumed that mice had made their winter home. Every so often he would glance back in the direction of Honeycomb, curious to see how she was faring. Having a grey pelt meant that he stuck out just a bit more than other cats in this environment, so he ducked down inbetween some bushes to help hide himself as he patiently waited.

A quick glance over her shoulder told Honeycomb that Stalkerjaw was exploring a tree hollow. Then she turned her attention back to her own hunt. Finding that she really wanted to catch this vole more than she normally would on another hunt gave her pause to think. Why was this catch so important? Then the answer came to her suddenly and unexpectedly. She wanted to impress Stalkerjaw! It surprised her but it was the truth. She shook her head to clear her thoughts and to refocus on her hunt. It wasn't long before she had made her catch and she went back with the vole dangling from her mouth to where she and the tom had parted.
As Stalkerjaw crouched there behind the bush, it suddenly occurred to him why he disliked hunting so much; he hated waiting. It seemed like he had been sitting there forever, watching a tree hollow with absolutely no signs of life. His paws itched to get moving again, but the tom forced himself to remain still. What would Honeycomb think if he flaked out of the hunt now? There was a clan that depended on them, after all. As he was pondering this, an unexpected squeaking snapped him out of his thoughts. There, cautious emerging from the hollow, was a large mouse. Finally! The creature sniffed the air for a few seconds, before slowly stepping away from the shelter of the tree towards the grass. That was his moment to strike. Without thinking, Stalkerjaw leaped out, digging his claws into the prey before it could think about running. But unfortunately, the heavy warrior miscalculated his pounce and slammed head-first into the tree trunk.

Upon hearing a noise, Honeycomb turned to see Stalkerjaw hitting his head against a tree. Dropping her prey, she ran over to him. "Are you alright?" she asked, her voice heavy with concern. What could have happened? she wondered. Did he slip? Sometimes these areas have slippery moss growing around them. Perhaps that's what happened, she reasoned. Some cats have twisted their paws because of the slickness of the moss.
"Ughhhhh," Stalkerjaw groaned as he rubbed his free paw over his face, and attempted to get back up on his feet. "I'm...okay," he responded with a sigh, shaking his head in the hopes of regaining his barings. Why did the world look like it was spinning? Where there always two trees over there? His eyes glanced down at the half-crushed mouse still in his claw, and released it, letting the kill fall to the ground with a soft 'blump'. "I...overjumped," he admitted, refusing to meet Honeycomb's gaze in embarassment. "At least I caught the mouse, though."
