Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
"I'll be back soon," Luckywillow promised his daughter. He carefully extracted her from between his shoulders and placed her back on the nursery floor. Then he left the den, listening to make sure she stayed put.
It had been a long and restless night for the warrior, and though the sun was shining bright today, he was still shivering at the slight wind blowing through the camp. He shifted from paw to paw as he surveyed the rest of the clan going about their duties. In his tired state, he wasn't sure if he would make a good hunter at all; he needed someone else by his side.
"Hey," he called in greeting to his clan, "uh-- I'm going to look for a rabbit for my kits. Will someone come with me?"
At the call of a voice, her eyes darted upwards. Meadoweyes had just been thinking about heading out of camp in order to search for a few herbs to add to the storage. They were running low on some things.
"I can come along.. If you don't mind me checking a few areas for some herbs, that is." Meadoweyes could hunt as well as any warrior there, but those things were no longer her duties. However, she would definitely try to catch something to bring back to the clan. It was nice having a medicine cat who could play both jobs if it were ever needed.
The cream tabby stared at her, surprised. She wanted to come with him? If he was hunting and she was searching for herbs, they wouldn't be much help for each other. The calculations turned behind his eyes before he made his decision. Rabbits liked to eat plants, and one might lurk by the herbs she wanted to gather; once he caught his prey, he might be able to help her locate what she needded.
"Thank you," Luckywillow agreed, dipping his head. "I'd like that."
The small siamese cat overheard the talk of an outing and lashed her tail side to side out of habit. A trip outside camp was exactly what the new warrior needed. A chance to stretch her legs and get a feel for the territory. A slice of anxiety cut through her, but she instantly swiped it aside with another lash of her tail and headed towards the two.
"I'll come, too," She mewed, turning her gaze to Luckywillow first, then to Meadoweyes. "I'm Lilacburn, by the way."
Meadoweyes could see the surprise flash along his face. It was something she'd have to get used to.. "I was a warrior, before, you know." She paused, blinking her violet eyes at him and offering a small smile. "I can hunt as well, Luckywillow. Don't worry." She then looked to Lilacburn. "I'm Meadoweyes, but I suppose you probably already know that." She seemed a little embarrassed. All the cats knew she was one of two of SwiftClan's new medicine cats. Meadoweyes had been a very 'background' type character, and the new need for her and her fellow medicine cat had been a sudden responsibility and had drawn a lot of attention towards her. The weight on her shoulders a bit unexpected, but she was hoping that her anxieties would settle soon.
Sometimes she found that it was almost expected that all she knew about was herbs and such now.
"Of course," he murmured quickly to Meadoweyes. He didn't mean to offend her, he was just surprised by the unexpected offer. Even if she could hunt, why would she choose to, when she had a new job? He flashed her a guilty smile before he turned to Lilacburn and nodded to her as well.
"That's great! I'm Luckywillow," he introduced. Already he could feel excitement fizzing through his paws. Their little patrol would catch a good meal in no time, he knew it. "Are you both ready to go?" Shifting to Meadoweyes, he added, "any particular place we should hunt to find the right herbs?"
She gave a small nod,"The forest would benefit all of us, I believe. I can find a few things there I need to add to the store, as well as finding prey hiding in the underbrush." She figured it would be the best bet for the entire patrol. There were several things she'd be able to gather as long as they were growing as she hoped. It was definitely expected that there would be chance of mice flittering about the roots of the trees.
Lilacburn jumped up at her response, eager to be on their way. Without waiting for another word she began stalking towards the camp's exit, her plume of a tail lashing behind her. The she-cat desperately needed a good hunt and a run through the forest. She looked back at the two with an ornery grin and took off in that direction.
Meadoweyes gave a smile in response and soon followed after the feline. She was glad for another to lead the way, because if she were leading she'd slow them down a lot. She figured she'd have to catch up here and there, as she'd likely be stopping in certain areas to search while they searched for prey likely a bit further down.
Luckywillow nodded, content with her choice, and turned to see Lilacburn already heading out. The cream tabby grinned and trotted after her, falling in step beside Meadoweyes and letting the warrior take the lead. It had been a while since he was last out here, and he took a deep breath, tasting the tantalizing scent of the land on the air. After the stuffy air of the nursery, it was a relief.
"What a nice day," he mewed aloud. The sun shone overhead, though the small breeze was a little chilly.
The fiery she-cat couldn't help but agree more, though she didn't speak it aloud. Instead she let the wind blow through her fur and felt freedom come with it. Lilacburn tried to keep close but not too close - perhaps just a few fox lengths ahead of the two. Her paws took her to where she knew the forest lay, and as the trees began to loom overhead she grinned. She'd always loved the forest. The siamese began to slow to a walk, waiting for the others so they could begin their walk through the woods in one group.
"Yes, it's peaceful." Meadoweyes responded, unable to contain her smile at that. She glanced at Lilacburn ahead, who was waiting on the pair. She waved her tail, managing to catch up with a decent steady trot. "It's so nice out, it's almost a shame we can't simply relax." She gave a light laugh, though she knew they all had reasons to be out there. And relaxing was not that reason.
"Someday... once we're elders," he guessed, equal parts amusement and envy. Some warriors had days off to relax, but Luckywillow couldn't remember the last time he'd even slept through the night uninterrupted. Living in this nursery with five young kittens was not an easy task and it was rare that any of them made it more than a few hours without waking him up. Instead, he snatched moments of sleep whenever he could and called it good enough.
Luckywillow stepped up beside them to enter the forest, his ears rising to an alert position. They were on the prowl for prey now, and his mind was set on finding a juicy rabbit.
"If we find enough prey, we can have the rest of the day off," he suggested, more to them than to himself.
Lilacburn flicked her ears as she listened to the others' conversation. Personally she didn't mind being out most day, even if it is duties. Roaming through the territory was her favorite thing to do. Nonetheless, she was keen on competitions, and decided to propose such. "How about we have a contest of sorts?" She inquired quietly, not wanting to scare any nearby prey.
Meadoweyes glanced at Luckywillow, but made no comment this time. She had much to do, and so little time to do these things, she felt. A slight sigh, but nothing more. She then found her eyes turning to Lilacburn, and her head tilted to the side curiously. "A contest?"
The she-cat nodded her head, turning her gaze to the medicine cat. "We see who can catch the most prey," She paused as she realized that perhaps Meadoweyes would prefer to gather her herbs instead, but carried on nonetheless. "If we spread out just a bit, maybe we can catch more faster, and then we can help you gather your herbs?" Lilacburn added at the end. She was aiming to scratch all their backs.
The cream-colored tom tilted his head to the side, considering the proposition. He was out here to find specific prey, not just catch anything -- but as long as someone caught a rabbit, did it matter who brought it down? He should bring back more prey for the rest of the clan, right? And a good competition would wake him up even more, keep him alert and excited to hunt.
"I'm in," Luckywillow replied eagerly, turning to Meadoweyes.
She smiled. "I will likely lose, as I am more focused on gathering my herbs, but I can do my best!" She promised the pair, her eyes bright and ready to participate with the others. It had been a definite adjustment going from being a loner, a warrior, a medicine cat. Her life had changed so much in the past few moons.
Lilacburn grinned at their affirmatives. Her paws were itching to dash away already. "Well, it is for fun... Mostly, anyway!" She added at the end, mischief glimmering in her eyes. Without much more hesitation she proclaimed, "Okay, go!" And made a hasty retreat towards her favorite hunting area, tail streaming behind her.
With Lilacburn already charging away, there was no time to waste. "Good luck," Luckywillow mewed to Meadoweyes; then, swiveling to the opposite direction of Lilacburn, he headed out as well.
He would take any prey, but a rabbit was his goal, so with that in mind he set off with his head tilted to the side and paws light on the ground, tasting the air for that distinctive scent. A fallen tree blocked his path, so he headed to the lower end and hopped up onto it, then started to climb carefully up the trunk.
