Perhaps she should've been embarrassed by how much she was enjoying this, but it had been so long, since she had been the one to be taken care of rather than the other way round. There was a part of her that wondered what had happened to those kits she had left with Bermondsey, whether he truly did kill them, or perhaps left them somewhere else to die. She had been tempted to broach the topic with Charlotte but the thought of her daughter knowing she had siblings, siblings that weren't their father's, siblings that were most likely dead, terrified her. She didn't know what the shaman would think, whether she'd be furious at Safiya, for betraying Avi, for having kits when she had abandoned her first ones, or heartbroken the same way she was, that she might never see them again. The soothing touch of Eshek's grooming kept her emotions at bay, but it was still there, at the back of her mind.
She opted to focus on her story instead. Sympathy was written across Safiya's face as the other cat spoke of her brother. Gods, they were so similar. Two cats who had been pushed into situations too big for their minds to comprehend, too young to understand, too fast in their actions, and not fast enough in catching themselves before the disaster hit. The golden she-cat was silent for a few moments, before she spoke.
"I left Charlotte too," she spoke softly, "I thought she'd hate me after...after what I did. I didn't know how to raise her and Avi died so soon after and...I did something horrible after that. I couldn't stay and I thought she died because of me but...I know she's angry with me now, but she saved my life too, so somehow I think...I guess I think in the end there's a chance she'll forgive me for being a terrible mother, you know? Maybe your brother will forgive you too."
Safiya chuckled. "Just don't give them two-part names ever," she spoke, her voice holding the first sign of humour in them in a long while, "they're horrible. I think out of all the things my mother gave me, my full name might've been the worst...but at least I didn't have the worst name of our litter. Pretty sure the rest of them had it worse. She named my brother Daireanne-Grace. Can you imagine? It's probably why he was an absolute psychopath."
Safiya looked up to Eshek at her query, her copper eyes blinking slowly at the she-cat. "I haven't eaten much," she admitted, "I'm not sure i can hold much food in but...could we share?" She almost seemed a little shy as she asked.
Eshek smiled sorrowfully, trying to look happy and hopeful for her. Maybe things would work out fine for Safiya — she and her daughter were already talking, and she was in Charlotte’s workspace right now — and she hoped with all her heart they did; there was no selfishness, no jealousy, no resentment that Safiya might end up happy when she wouldn’t. But somehow she doubted that her story with Lorah would ever end with peace. “I hope so,” she replied in a low, gentle murmur that rumbled in her throat, closing her eyes again as she rasped her tongue between the golden she-cat’s ears. “After all this, you deserve an ending with your daughter in it.”
When Safiya spoke again, Eshek leaned her head back, neck arched, and watched her with a little smile, eyes lidded to calm slits. “Sounds like a pretentious little private school boy who’d drown puppies,” she replied in that same low rumble, coughing a little laugh. “Should be pretty — just sounds like an ass.”
Eshek met Safi’s shy gaze with a steady, maternal one, her eyes still hooded. “Of course,” she replied. “I hunt as well as a kit but—“ Pushing herself to her paws, she slunk over to the doorway and stood there for a moment, leaning against it lazily with a slumped, lounging sort of posture. Finally, she spotted a trainee. “HEY,” she snapped, like they’d done something worthy of the proxy’s torture. “Food. Here. Now.” The trainee unfroze from where they’d immediately hunkered down on the cobblestones, staring at Eshek with huge eyes and ears flattened against their head, and sprinted off up the steps, practically tripping over themselves in their hurry. While she was waiting, Eshek threw a lazy grin over her shoulder at Safiya, giving her a little wink.
After only a minute or two, the trainee sped back down to her — “FINALLY,” Eshek snapped just to scare them — and dropped three fat pigeons from the beams of the attic at her paws, panting. “Thank you, Jesus, took you long enough,” she greeted them rudely, snatching up the still-warm corpses and spinning around, her tail slapping the trainee across the cheek. They simpered a thank you and an apology and another thank you and raced off crying.
“Abuses of power my ass,” Eshek growled, laughing, as she sauntered lazily back to Safiya and dropped the pigeons in front of her. “Eat as much as you can. I’ll take the rest to Ber like the considerate wife I am.” Settling down in her former spot at Safiya’s side, she pushed one of the birds closer to her — “eat” — and wrinkled her nose at the commonness of the meal, prodding it a few times, before taking a bite. The second the hot blood flooded her jaws she felt better about it, comforted, like the blood was a childhood teddy bear.

Her chest felt an ache at Eshek's warm words, her face turning slightly pink at the well wishes. "You too," she murmured, "you and your brother deserve a happy ending." There was a genuine look of hope and sincerity in Safiya's eyes as she looked at Eshek, copper meeting blue for a moment too long, before she averted her gaze with a small smile, as Eshek continued on.
She giggled at her joke, a sound that seemed so strange in an environment like this. It had been a while since she had found anything worth laughing over, and in a way, she was almost grateful to be here right now, holding a conversation with a cat who wasn't angry at her or wanted her dead. "He was an ass," she pointed out, kneading the ground softly, "to be honest, all of my siblings are kind of assholes, but I guess you probably know that already."
As Eshek snapped at the trainee, Safiya almost jumped at the suddenness of it all, before feeling her ears warm up at that. Right. She didn't mean to be jumpy but frankly, she had been jumpy since forever now, it was hard to break out of that habit. Still, she felt her stomach grumble as the food came about, and while there was still that feeling of nausea she was holding back, she quickly decided that this meal was worth trying even if she couldn't hold it down.
She took a bite of the bird, before turning to Eshek. "So how did you and my brother meet?" she asked, "and what do you see in him anyway?" He was always so uptight, she didn't know what anyone saw in him if she was to be honest.
Eshek watched Safiya eat like a drill sergeant making sure their platoon licked the plates clean; when she got a few bites down, she leaned back slightly, pleased. "Mm - well, he showed up near DayClan one day, where I live sometimes, and so I bullied him, y'know? 'Cuz he's so easy to bully," her voice was a husky laugh, filled to the brim with fondness as her eyes wandered away and glazed slightly. "Then, I dunno, I made him give me a tour of their new territory, because they'd moved to the city - Christ knows why, it was a dump. Then I dragged him along to raid a gas station and eat sushi and kill ourselves on a shopping cart rollercoaster - oh, and then we threw a rager and he got high off his face on something some trainee gave him. And after that he couldn't get rid of me... and he hasn't even really tried."
She was quiet for a few moments, looking down at her paws. When she spoke again, her voice was a little more stripped back. "I dunno, I guess I just like... it's nice to have someone who's different, y'know? All my other friends," was Ber in the friend category anymore? "they're like me, they're nuts, they do crazy stunts and then go home like none of it happened and then we do it again the next day." She still wasn't looking at Safiya. "So it's just fun to have someone who questions it all - it makes it... more fun, in a way. And he cares about me, y'know? He's... constant. Like I can always come home and he'll give me a lecture and always be the same. 'Cuz he gets mad but he doesn't judge me. He could be so furious with me, but then if I tell him I need him he'll drop everything and be there." She trailed off. She'd never fully comprehend just how grateful she was to have him in her life...
Realising she was spilling her heart out about Safiya's brother, she let out a heavy, flustered laugh and wiped the corner of her eye with her paw, even though she wasn't crying; she felt as laid bare as if she had been and the feeling was confusing, both sneering, panicked disgust and relief. "I don't know what he sees in me. I'm a pain in the ass. I think it's just 'cuz no one else wants to hang out with him. I embarrass him so much, I dunno why he hasn't bitten my head off yet. He puts up with so much from me."

She snorted in amusement. Safiya clearly didn't see her brother in the same way Eshek did. Easy to bully? Was that what he was like? She had never been the type...though she knew he had been the irritated one of his own litter. She had been the runt despite being the second born; perhaps that was why she got along with him better than the rest of her siblings. The golden she-cat hadn't known that they had moved to the city, and she was grateful she was never drawn to there, but whatever they were doing, it seemed...interesting. She didn't know what a rager was, or a shopping cart rollercoaster, but it sounded...fun?
A giggle left her mouth. Funny that Ber was sticking around a self-proclaimed crazy when he was so damn afraid of it. "Maybe he thinks that by hanging out with you, you'll end up attracting all the crazy so they keep off of him," she mused, whiskers twitching in amusement, sort of like dragging someone outside with you so they get eaten by mosquitos instead, you know?" She supposed she couldn't say the same for herself. "Well I guess he's put up with the rest of us," she snorted, "and I guess in a way I'm probably just as crazy, just not in the same way as you are. He had to deal with the rest of our family, I doubt you seem like any different from the rest of us."
It was a weird roundabout way of calling Eshek family, but hey, it wasn't like Safiya had noticed it either.
