Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Sagebristle jumped as Sunpaw tumbled into her and away, before settling back down, keeping her eyes trained firmly on the fireflies and no one else. She could sense Doefreckle beside her after a moment, but she wouldn't look at him, despite her surprise at his words. Very few, if any cats, had ever apologized to her before. Rarely did she deserve it, but still... it was nice to hear.
"S'not a problem," she said after a moment, quietly. "I've said far worse." The Loyal Guard member felt just as conflicted about being here, about seeing the way they played and lived and had their own lives. As cruel as she came off, she wasn't heartless, and she resented being here and subjected these Summerclan cats to Nightclan rule. But it was her job, and Aspenstar was one of the few cats to ever acknowledge Sagebristle's worth. So she did her job. It didn't mean she didn't recognize some semblance of similar trauma between herself and Doefreckle, though. "They sure do make a sickening pair," she muttered, referencing Howlingheart and Sunpaw, but her voice was far more wistful than mocking.
Sunpetal stopped and turned to glimpse the flower Sunpaw pointed out, her thoughts veiled by the soft smile she offered. "It is marigold," she confirmed, beckoning the younger cat closer. "Come here and I'll show you where to snip it off at. See these little nodes.." As Sunpaw joined her, she went off into an explanation of how to harvest the plant and collect the seeds, then set what they gathered to the side. "We can come back and get it once we find the borage and watermint. Birdie showed you what those looked like before, right?"

Sunpaw nodded excitedly, glad she could help. "Papa come over here!" she called out brightly, as Sunpetal showed her how to snip off the little plant. She could remember Vulturemalice talking about the other herbs Sunpetal had mentioned. She had always been surprised and delighted by how Vulturemalice could smell a herb from a meadow away. She gave Sunpetal an excited nod.
With her own bitty claws, she yanked a flower out. Marigold was so pretty, she thought happily, as she began her work.
(a few more days before we close this thread out guys!)
"Good job, Sunpaw," and there was nothing but earnesty glowing in her voice. Sunpetal melded back into the moment to praise her friend and clanmate, moving to place a veil of cobwebs across the fruits of Sunpaw's labor. "Come on, let's keep going." She glanced back at where Doefreckle and Sagebristle were still bathed by the twinkling glow, thankful for the opportunity it gave them to carry on without their escort. So far, she'd noticed the mixed feelings about their little troop, but try as she might- and she didn't try very hard- she struggled to stomach the NightClan she-cat's presence. Sagebristle had been the one to impede her escape, after all, on that last fateful night.
She moved on ahead towards the sound of running water, guiding her through the dark.
S'not a problem; I've said far worse. "Like that you were gonna break my other paw?" he asked with a soft, crooked little grin. "It'd be a shorter list to say who hadn't said that at some point or another." He grew quieter a moment later, turning his head back to the apprentice and her adopted father, shrinking into himself slightly until he looked smaller than before. "You're just a soldier," Doefreckle went on quietly, his eyes still on Sunpaw and Howlingheart through the shifting veil of fireflies. "You do what you're told." He didn't know if he really believed that, if he could wave off all the atrocities Sagebristle had attached her name to just by being here, if he could ignore the certainty that he wouldn't do the same thing in her position. As self-serving as he often was, he knew he'd rather die. Or he hoped he would. That small fragment of doubt made him squirm, made him sick. But there was that small part of him who knew he'd been training for - dreaming of - the same position she was now in when he was an apprentice. Maybe back then he would have done all these things too, when he thought violence and honour were more admirable than compassion and love.
They sure do make a sickening pair. Doefreckle smiled, gaze following Sunpaw when she leapt up at the fireflies. "They do," he replied softly, and there was more sad, quiet warmth in his voice than wistfulness. Unknown to one another, they were like bookends, approaching the same trauma from the opposite directions: a father who missed out on his children, a child who missed out on her father. When Sunpaw hurried off and he realised Sunpetal was leading them on through the dark, Doe looked over his shoulder, staying where he was for another few moments, before rising and remaining at Sagebristle's side. They followed more slowly in Sunpetal's pawsteps. A little way along the path, Doe's pink nose twitched at the smell of borage and he drifted off to the undergrowth spilling over the earthen track, crouching to gently scrape away the soil to get to the roots. Pulling the whole plant out, with healing leaves intact and soil raining down off the roots, he held it softly in his jaws and limped back to Sagebristle. "I assume these are all going back to Pinesimmer," he mumbled quietly around the stem, "and then on to NightClan. It's a cruel law, to keep cats in need from medicine just to keep up the pretence that SummerClan has something Aspenstar needs." There was nothing accusing in his voice, nothing judgemental; it was just quiet truth. She didn't need them; she just had to pretend there was a reason beyond the fact she'd wanted it. "NightClan has never been short of herbs."
Holding Sagebristle's gaze for a heartbeat longer, Doe looked away and limped on after Sunpetal with the borage in his jaws.
"That's two of the three," Sagebristle said loudly, addressing the entire patrol. "Find that last herb you're looking for and we'll go back." Quite intentionally, she avoided responding to Doefreckle's last comment, though her amber eyes had held his for several moments. Her command had gotten snippier in the aftermath of his revelation, mostly because of her own confusion about what she was doing here, what she wanted, and why she felt guilty about... all of this.
As they walked on, she kept her distance, watching the dirt under her paws as she tried to think about what to do.

Sunpaw now had a mouth full of flowers, as she trotted over to the others, unaware of their conversations and totally oblivious to the feelings of everyone around her, just as usual. "What did you guys find?" she asked, almost spitting flowers as she peered at Doefreckle with curious eyes.
"Borage," Doe replied, calm and happy, around the mouthful of leaves. The star-shaped blue flowers were wilted from frost. "Those marigolds would look pretty on you - you should ask Sunpetal to help you place some in your fur if we can spare any." It was a quiet jab at Sagebristle. "Come on," he nudged the apprentice gently along, limping after her with the borage in his jaws, "she's probably already found the watermint." He didn't look at the NightClan guard as he left her. He had no ill feeling left towards her, even felt a faint glimmer of kinship; he just wanted her to wake up.
Doe brushed through the ferns after Sunpaw, following the sound of running water, and joined Sunpetal beside the stream. "See it?" he asked the apprentice softly, gesturing with his nose towards the mint growing on the damp bank; there were a few old, browning blooms left bobbing in the flow of the water rocking against the stems. "You'll be the finest herb collector SummerClan has ever seen," he purred, looking down and smiling at her through the soft darkness. He hoped his voice didn't sound as tired and heavy as his heart felt. He just wanted to go back to his nest beside Shadedsun and blink miserably at the den wall until he drifted off for a few aching minutes, before his paw or his own empty grief woke him again.
"It looks like we've got everything we set out to get," Sunpetal murmured, as if unaware of Doefreckle to her left and Sunpaw to her right. She gently scrounged together some to take back with them, then nodded to each member of her patrol- other than Sagebristle, who still received a fleeting glare- and backed away from the bank into the night on the other side of them.
They passed back through that glowing meadow just as the fireflies were beginning to disperse, though a few still flickered by and buzzed against the cats' ears, earning an occasional bat from even the sullen Sunpetal. She hesitated at the camp entrance before pushing through it. "Pile everything here," she instructed, watching as one of the shadows gained sentience and began to saunter towards them.
Phantomfox inspected the pile disinterestedly, shuffling the herbs under a harsh paw. "Sagebristle, you'll be returning to NightClan to deliver the majority of these to Aspenstar. The rest will remain here for Pinesimmer to...do nothing with," he grunted, then dismissed them all.
(feel free to continue rping in this thread but the herb collecting is finished <3)
Sagebristle nodded, taking the herbs she was to deliver and watching as Phantomfox took the rest to Pinesimmer. After a moment, she turned away, discreetly splitting the pile she'd been given in two and shoving half of it at the nearest cat, who happened to be Sunpetal. "Take those to Vulturemalice. If you ever mention this to anyone else, I'll tear your ears in half," she grumbled, taking the much reduced delivery back into her mouth.
There was nothing more to be said, so she set off, heading back to Nightclan to make her assigned delivery.
Surprise crossed her features, taken aback by Sagebristle's actions. "I... uh..." She fumbled, the words logdged in her throat as she regarded the russet guard uncertainly. There was still a present dislike and distrust, but gratitude was glowing beneath it, barely distinguishable. "Thanks. It's the least you can do," she retorted, but it lacked intensity, the Garden Keeper holding Sagebristle's gaze momentarily before she grabbed the offerings and moved off in the opposite direction.
