Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Ghostcrown hesitated. They had searched the docks to no avail, and it was growing steadily darker around them. Meadoweyes was exhausted and injured. The odds they would find anything were low, and the safer decision was to head back to camp and regroup. They could send out a renewed search in the morning.
As the inky black tom turned and gazed out over the sea, he knew he couldn't leave. Not until they had exhausted every corner and searched under every stone. He had nearly lost his daughter once, and the days where he thought her dead had been bleak; he could not wish that terrible, all-encompassing guilty and agony on anyone else. As long as there was a chance they would find Mothkit, he would not let her mother suffer like that.
"You can go back and get your wounds treated," he murmured, "but I need to stay out here." He blinked at her -- she was welcome to stay with him, but he wouldn't ask that of her.
Meadoweyes understood the conflict that must have been going through the warrior's head. Her brows furrowed, and she shook her head. "No, Ghostcrown. I can't leave you out here alone." It would be wrong, but she also knew she couldn't keep on without rest. Her body hurt, and they'd been out there for hours.
"I just need to rest..." She muttered. Though, where, she was unsure.
Ghostcrown smiled at her gratefully, relieved he wouldn't have to do this alone. "Okay. We can find somewhere quiet, then take a break there and think," he suggested. The tom surveyed the area, then nodded to the pier. "Let's go sit on the end there. It looks peaceful."
The feline gave a not in agreement. She awaited for him to lead the way, her eyes glancing back at the cat who was still scrambling from the freezing water. She watched him shake out his coat, and gave a small huff. Served him right, she tried to warn him anyways.
Ghostcrown eyed the soaked tom and decided he wasn't a threat anymore. He led the way back along to the pier and out to the edge, where he curled his tail around his paws and stared out at sea.
Were they ever going to find the lost kitten?
"We'll rest just a little bit, then try some more," he mewed, quiet determination in his voice. "She's out here somewhere."
"Who is?" chirped a tiny kit's voice from behind them. Perched on the edge of a boat that was tied to the pier was a thick-furred gray-and-white kitten - the very one they were seeking.
Meadoweyes almost jumped out of her pelt. She spun around, wide-eyed. "We've been looking everywhere for you!!" she explained, then noticed the tie around her neck. "Did a two-leg do this??"
Ghostcrown gawked at Mothkit from behind Meadoweyes. She was here, alive, and safe! Safe, or at least uninjured. Ghostcrown glanced at the other warrior, worried, as he noticed the rope around the kit's neck.
"Aw. Do what?" Mothkit blinked at them both. She leaned forward against the restraints and the tugging reminded her of why she was here. "Oh. I thought I could fit," she admitted. She had tried to slip through the maze of rope to jump off of the boat and instead had tangled herself hopelessly.
Meadoweyes glanced back at Ghostcrown, her brows furrowing. "Should we.. .try to chew it off?" It was merely a suggestion, but the rope did seem a bit thick. She pressed her lips together. "Don't worry Mothkit, we will get you free. Then we are going to head home... you shouldn't ever run off like this again... The whole clan is worried sick about you!" She chastised the kitten, shaking her head as she went closer and began inspecting the rope.
“It’s worth a try,” he conceded. Ghostcrown stepped up and started to gnaw. His jaws ached within a minute and he was making no progress; with a sigh, he stepped away.
“We’ll get you out,” he murmured, resting his forehead against the kit’s.
"Nothing." She muttered in defeat. "What are we going to do..?" She turned to look at the kitten. Luckily, the kit didn't seem afraid. That was at least, a good sign. A panicked kit meant a panicked pair of cats trying to rescue the said kit.
Ghostcrown frowned, fighting against a wave of hopelessness. There had to be some way to rescue the kitten. He investigated the rope; tugged on it; chewed on it; tried to fit his paws into the loop; nothing was working. Finally he stared at it for a long, silent minute.
"You don't think..." he murmured.
The black warrior stepped forward and lifted one paw, then pressed on Mothkit's forehead. She squeaked, but he pushed harder, and her head popped! backward out of the rope loop. She was free!
Mothkit tumbled backward, then sprang to her paws. "Thanks!" she yipped, and tail held high, started to walk away from the warriors.
Meadoweyes turned to watch the tom experiment with ways to get the kit out it seemed... Once she was free, she couldn't help but giggle a little. That was... interesting to say in the least. Finally she waved her tail and gave quick look around. "Let's get you home, Mothkit. Everyone is worried sick about you." Her violet eyes shifted to Ghostcrown, and she offered a smile and murmured softly,"Good job."
Ghostcrown's eyes glowed with pride as they met Meadoweyes', and then he smiled back.
He opened his mouth to speak, but then he noticed Mothkit was definitely not waiting for them, and instead was trotting off on her own. The warrior rolled his eyes. "Wait up for us!" he called.
"CATCH ME!" Mothkit yowled back, and shot off across the dock.
The way his eyes shone struck something in Meadoweyes, his smile seemed genuinely thankful for a simple praise of being told he'd done a good job. Before she could say anything more, she had noticed him hesitate and his attention moved to Mothkit, who definitely didn't seem to be waiting on them. Shaking her head with a smile, she bounced forward to catch up to the kitten. "Better run Mothkit, I'm gonna get you!" No longer feeling the weight of the missing kit, she felt she could relax and let loose. It was also better not to put fear into the kitten as to how bad that situation could have been. They'd been lucky to get out this easy, and the adrenaline of finding Mothkit had made her forget about her injury for the moment.
Ghostcrown chuckled as she raced after the kitten and jogged to keep up with the pair.
"You can't get me!" Mothkit squealed. Her tail whipped back and forth as she hurried to escape the warrior, running at her full speed along the docks and back toward camp.
Meadoweyes lagged behind just a little. She knew as a kit, it was fun to think you were much faster than an adult. So she made herself just slightly slower, so as to provide her with more entertainment.
Mothkit was soon puffing for breath. She wanted to keep running, she was even faster than the warriors! She startled to stumble over her own paws in her haste and fell flat on her face.
"Oh dear." Meadoweyes found herself muttering softly as she rushed to the kitten's side. She carefully picked her up by her scruff, and gave a tiny laugh between her teeth. "Ofh-dearrr. Less gef ou back to teh clab. I'b carry ou." She mewed, though it was a bit hard to make out between the kitten fur in her mouth.
