The happy-go-lucky tom was rarely seen with a frown on his face, but surely, this sort of situation warranted it. He could still remember the half-buried head, face staring blankly at him while the others looked upon it with either horror or a mild interest. He had assumed at first, it was just the two of his merry group, and then it had only been three. Him, Rhiannon, and Reynardine.
And now? There were more. They were certainly plenty more. He was unsure how many exactly there were, but all he knew was that he didn't trust any of them other than his sister...though, out of them all, he didn't exactly distrust Reynardine. She had been the most familiar of them all, and she didn't seem like the type to do harm, even if he found her rather...too observant. She made his skin prickle at the way she seemed to know more than the average cat.
So here he was, entering the mage's den with a bunch of leaves in his mouth. Lamb's ear, a plant he recognized from his journeys. A peace offering. "We...probably should talk," he spoke the moment he caught sight of the white she-cat. He didn't clarify, but it was clear from his eyes that they both knew exactly what they were talking about.
Reynardine looked surprised when Hywel entered her den, looking up from where she was sorting herbs, repeating their uses to herself in an attempt to memorize them. "Good afternoon," she said, glancing down once more before shuffling the herbs to the side with her paw. They hadn't spoken since that uncanny event a few weeks prior, and it still weighed on her mind.
It would be good to talk it through with someone who knew what it signified. "Thanks for the gift. Of course we can talk," she gestured for him to sit, moving the lamb's ear to the herb corner. "Are you hungry? I have a few pieces of fresh-kill available."

He still felt uncomfortable with Reynardine's all-knowing gaze on him, and even now, any cat from the loch weighed suspiciously on his mind, but out of all of them, she was the only one who ever indicated that she had a distaste for the barbarism of the northern cats. He had met Cross, and of course, the two younger cats, and the two siblings who he was certain didn't reveal who they truly were, but...she seemed to tell the truth, even if it wasn't everything.
Hywel didn't realize how hungry he was until she mentioned food and his stomach grumbled its complaint at that point. "Oh, yeah that'd be nice. I won't be taking food from your mouth, will I?" he glanced around, "and I'm not sure whether we should be speaking here or somewhere else. I'm not sure if the shaman's here or not." He had yet to meet the other cat after all, though his sister seemed fascinated by her role.
"Charlotte's out for the day and I've got plenty of food," Reynardine said, dismissing his concerns with a flick of her tail. With a faint smile, she rummaged through her pile, pulling out a rabbit that was large enough to split. She returned to Hywel's side, giving him a few feet of space so she didn't unnerve him too much, and pushed the rabbit towards him. "So... have you heard or seen anything else?" She asked quietly, more out of a solemn mood that a need to be discreet in their current location.

He nodded, standing there, shifting his weight from one paw to another as she arranged the space a little, only relaxing and sitting when she started to speak. Hywel's brow was furrowed, a worry seemed to be weighing on his mind as she asked her question. "No," he admitted, "it's...weird I guess. I thought it was just the three of us from the north, but it turns out we're a bigger party than I thought. Did you know about this? About any of this?"
Hywel wasn't sure how long Reynardine had been here, he had assumed that they arrived around the same time, but surely, she was a perceptive cat. Would she have noticed if they were followed? If they weren't alone? "Do you trust any of them?" he frowned. Do you trust me? "Anyone could've done this. It's too big of a coincidence to not be concerned."
"I didn't," Reynardine said honestly, letting Hywel take the first bite of the rabbit as she spoke. "I felt like something was off after I got here, but I didn't piece it together- this place is so different from home I thought it was just me being paranoid. And I don't... distrust anyone per say, I just don't necessarily trust them."
Reynardine took a bite of the prey, taking a moment to compose her thoughts. "Though I don't think you did it- or your sister- if that's any comfort to you. I'm not sure how much you trust me, but I didn't do it either."

His eyes searched hers for a moment. Hywel couldn't really say the same. He didn't trust anyone. It was almost a relief that Rey believed in his innocence, and he did too. Clearly he hadn't done it, but his sister? Surely she wouldn't, but there were times...well, he wasn't all too sure.
"There's nothing I can prove or disprove," he spoke, not agreeing nor disagreeing, "I don't know any of the others either, and it makes me wonder..."
He gave Reynardine a faint smile. "Did your parents ever tell you the story about the sluagh? The whole, if you're not careful they'll steal your souls sort of speech when you were a kit? I used to think they were just stories to scare us into staying inside, just like everything else but...I don't know. Sometimes I get a weird feeling that there's something else out there watching us, like all of this is planned, you know?"
"I have heard that story," Rey responded with a half-ghost of a smile, taking the prey and taking a bite as she listened. His words stirred something in her stomach, something that she'd rather have just ignored. But since they were talking about it...
"I get the same feeling, sometimes." The admission came with a quiet flick of her thin white tail. "I thought I came here by accident, by chance- but I can't deny now that somehow I felt pulled here. And to get here and find my estranged mother and a bunch of loch cats? I don't think it can all be an accident, as superstitious as I'm sounding right now."

He looked at her, truly looked at her with those wide blue eyes of his. It was strange, how she always seemed to say exactly what was on his mind. "I felt the same too," he admitted, before chuckling quietly, though the tone was clearly one of dry disbelief, "I don't know if I should be telling you this but...I thought we had just wandered out here and decided to stay, and just a couple of days ago, I realized everything was a lie. My sister–"
Hywel stopped himself. What was he doing, telling their business to someone that was almost a stranger? He didn't know why but despite his initial distrust of Reynardine, and his uneasy feeling about the way she seemed to just know what he was thinking, she was...easy to speak to. She seemed to understand.
Reynardine inclined her head slightly, acknowledging his pause. As much as the curious side of her yearned to find out what lie he was referring to, she figured it would come out in time if he didn't want to share it now. "What does your sister think about all of this?" She asked, pushing the prey back to Hywel once more.
Rhiannon may not have done it- or Rey didn't suspect her, at least- but there was something about Rhiannon's beliefs and goals that made her more difficult to understand than Hywel, at least at their first meeting. Reynardine was more wary of her.

He laughed, shaking his head. "At this point, I don't know what she thinks," he spoke almost a little bitterly, "apparently there's plenty I don't know about her. Like the fact that she had brought us here for a reason. I don't think I ended up here by accident, and I don't think she's the one who's killing all of these cats. She was never that kind of cat, but sometimes...sometimes I don't know what she thinks."
It was hard to admit, that the cat he had raised was a stranger to him at times. "It's like she knows what she wants and she'll tell me at times but...sometimes she isn't honest about it either. She told me this was just a temporary stop and now...now I don't know what to think. I guess I didn't imagine staying here for so long. Did you? You said you found your mother here. It must've been strange for you too."
"I didn't plan to stay here forever," Reynardine said quietly, mulling over his words. It must be hard, to feel distant from your sibling. She'd been the only one of her litter, but she'd always felt like she'd known her father's motives and thoughts- and her cousins' too, even if they didn't know hers.
"I also certainly didn't expect to find my mother. It's... odd. I never grew up with a hope of meeting her, and now I have and I don't quite know what to do with the information she's given me. Bermondsey is my uncle and I have other aunts and uncles out there somewhere- a whole side of my family tree I was unaware of before this. Combined with the events we witnessed and my training? It's... a lot. It feels like too much, sometimes." The mage glanced away as she made her confession, tail tip twitching.

He listened. It was funny how similar they seemed to be. Both wanderers, both from the north, and both ended up in a place they never meant to be. He couldn't imagine her situation either. Finding out you had a mother who abandoned you, how strange would that be? He frowned, thinking of his own experience. If his mother had survived and he had found her living out here in the wild, he wouldn't know how to react.
"Did you ever...wonder what having a mother was like back before?" he asked, wondering if he was being a little too forward, "it must've been different from how you imagined it." He had never imagined himself having a nephew or niece.
"Honestly, I didn't. I was happy with my dad, and I had plenty of aunts to serve as female role models. Even if they were off their rocker." Reynardine glanced back at Hywel, relaxing a little as he asked questions instead of judging her abilities. "I wondered sometimes about what she was like, but only in passing and only as an abstract concept."
Her pink nose twitched faintly. "Yeah, different's one word for it. Especially because we rarely discuss it- and when we do, it's like we're gossiping about someone else. There's no instant maternal connection or anything, even if she's nicer to me than she is to others. It's strange. Did you know your own parents?"

He nodded. "So why did you really leave?" he asked quietly, "if you were happy with your dad?" There was a strange look in his eyes, the baby blues seemed to look a little too intensely at Reynardine. He knew she had asked her question, but his family was one thing he found difficult to speak of. Rhiannon? Sure, he'd fawn over her like a doting brother even if he was angry at her right now. His parents? That had been off-topic for almost anyone. It wasn't something he spoke of ever, except for a few trusted souls.
Not to mention, there was a part of him that feared her reaction. After all, they were out there hunting for a murderer; if she knew of his sordid past, that he was willing to kill his father, wouldn't she assume the worst of him? Surely had he known that about someone else, he'd immediately point to them as the killer.
"He died," Reynardine said simply, eyes falling to the ground. "He got sicker and sicker and he eventually passed away. My cousin had just died in the yearly ceremony, and I couldn't process all the grief at once. I was never a true believer, so I ran." After a long moment of silence, her split-hued gaze rose again.
"And I ended up here," she said, cognizant that he hadn't answered her question but not pushing the matter. "Why did you two leave?"

His eyes mellowed in a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry, that must've been difficult to deal with," he replied quietly, looking at his paws. He didn't quite know how to answer it. To tell her the truth was to confess that there was a chance he was involved in all of this, and with how perceptive she was, there was a chance she'd think otherwise, but they were all already on thin ice. He didn't trust anyone to think the better of him these days. His dirty little secret was only for himself to hold.
"My sister was supposed to be next, but she doesn't know," he replied, the grave note upon his face showed how tired he truly was from all of this, "I wasn't meant to find out but...I overheard. They always thought she was bad luck since she was born on the devil's day...and took our mother away. She...I..." he stammered for a moment, before shaking his head. "It wasn't her fault that...our mother didn't make it, and it wasn't fair that she was being punished for...other things out of our control, so I took her and left."
He specifically left out the argument he had with his father quiet. That wasn't for acquaintances. It wasn't even for lovers at this point. That was need-to-know information.
"You made the right choice," Rey said quietly, watching him glance around as he tried to justify leaving. "And even if she wasn't next, I would never judge you for leaving." Didn't she know how oppressive the loch could feel? With the constant superstition and monitoring and worry that you could be next.
Reynardine wished she'd known her cousin was slated for the ceremony. "If I'd known about my cousin, I'd have done the same thing. How old were you two, when you left? I was already full grown."

He gave her a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes before it faded away as quickly as it came. "Yeah," he replied, "her father–" He hesitated. Surely mentioning it as her father and not his own must've been a strange thing to refer their parent. "Let's just say he had some power and wasn't exactly...pleasant," he responded with a grimace. More than just a little unpleasant, he thought darkly, that abusive asshole deserved what he got.
"I was almost two," he shrugged, "but she was barely six moons old...actually, maybe even younger. It was...a while ago." He chuckled. "It's been almost three years since I've gone, and yet it seems like just yesterday with all of this happening."
He glanced up to her again. "Did you ever believe in any of it?" he asked, blinking, "not...the killing or anything, but the fact that cats could live more than one lifetime? That a cat could live forever?"
Reynardine could put the pieces together well enough. She nodded along with his story. "You're older than me, then. I'm two now- but you must have wandered for a while, while I came straight here. And still our paths overlapped..." She mumbled, pushing the bones of the prey off to the side.
"And no, I've never believed it. Every cat I've seen die remained dead. I'm not saying it's impossible... just highly improbably. I know what they say about the clan leaders, but I'll believe it when I see it. What about you?"
