He chuckled. "I guess that's about right," he replied. He wasn't too sure whether he believed it or not, even if his sister did. "I think the reason why I'm here is because of that," he admitted, "I don't know whether I believe it or not but...I know my sister does. I guess the good thing about this place is that I don't think they're trading any lives the same way they did in the north." He left the rest of it unspoken.
Still, she was the mage, no? "Wouldn't you one day have to...I don't know, take over all of the spiritual stuff too?"
"One day, though my mother hasn't said anything about the spiritual side of things." Reynardine rolled out her shoulders, glancing away. "I'll have to ask if she even believes in it- or if the League is even picky about that sort of thing. I'm fine with sticking with healing, if that's what they want from me. That and a litter of kits, I suppose."

He seemed rather amused by Reynardine's words. "Healing and a litter of kits?" he chuckled, "is that what's required from a shaman? Or a mage? Seems a rather...strange sort of thing, don't you think?" The cats around this forest still struck him as different and odd at times; the customs they had here were so different from the north. Just ask Doefreckle; Hywel had assumed that leaders truly killed nine other cats for the sake of gaining extra lives of their own.
"Apparently," Reynardine said with a faint laugh. "I'm older than a typical Mage, and once my mother steps down or passes away I'll need to take over and train my own flesh and blood to succeed me. What a vicious cycle."
"Doesn't help that I don't know a single tom that I'd ask to help me out with that," she muttered, rolling her eyes. "I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, though. I don't understand the emphasis on bloodline and why I can't just pick one of the herb-oriented trainees to be the Mage."

He laughed at that. "Have you ever thought about being a mother?" he asked, almost in the teasing way a friend would ask someone whether they were seeing someone else. It was funny. As much as Rhiannon didn't want her own kits, and as much as he had become practically a father before he had ever taken any other role in life.
"Unfortunately I don't think I can help you with that," he chuckled apologetically, "you're a lovely cat I'm sure, but I just...don't swing that way." An amusement seemed to cross his eyes. "Maybe they think your bloodline has some prophetic powers or something. It'd explain how perceptive you are."
"Occasionally, but not seriously," Reynardine said with an embarrassed chuckle. "And I never considered having kits just so they could inherit my position. I've never even liked anyone like that... at all. I'm not sure which way I swing," she said in response to Hywel's own comment, giving him a conspiratorial smile.
"Maybe. I think mostly I just inherited the crazy- or grew up around it so I'm always on my toes. What about you? Do you ever want a family?"

Hywel grinned at that. It was always fun to meet another cat who was attracted to their own gender, and despite Reynardine not quite knowing, at least she was open to entertaining that idea. That was all that mattered, after all. He pondered the next question.
"To be honest, maybe I do," he admitted with a chuckle, "you'd think I'd be tired of it by now, especially after taking care of my sister all of my life but...to be honest, I have a soft spot for taking care of others sometimes. Not all the time or anything, but having my own kits might be nice, you know? To...I guess avoid the things I disliked about my father too."
"How would you? Would you adopt?" Reynardine's question lacked any judgment, instead holding only sincere curiosity. She was also wondering what happened to her, if she only liked she-cats- or nobody at all. How would the bloodline continue then? "You do know kits are a full time job, and not a thing to be taken care of only sometimes." The smile on her features was soft, and she stood, stretching out her forelegs.

He pondered at the question. "You know, I never really thought about it much," he chuckled, "perhaps a surrogate? Adoption would work too I suppose..." The tom chuckled at Reynardine's chiding. "Of course I do," he grinned, "I had to take care of Rhiannon since she was a kit, and gods, she was a handful let me tell you."
"Have you found anyone worth settling down with?" She questioned, sincerely interested in this romantic side of life that she'd only ever felt an academic curiosity in. How did other cats meet and get into relationships, anyway? How did you ever move past the friendship stage? How did you... well, know that you felt something for someone? The handful comment made her laugh lightly- she'd helped babysit her cousins sometimes, and she knew how energetic they could be. "I commend you for that, at least."

He felt his cheeks warm. "I guess...maybe?" he admitted sheepishly, as if embarrassed by all of this. It was a strange story after all, a league cat falling for a clan one. "I've been seeing this tom here and there," he replied with a shrug, as if it was nothing too serious, "he's from the clans but...he's nice. Really sweet, has the warmest chocolate eyes I've ever seen...he wasn't usually my type but...I guess there was just something about him, you know? Just this spark...and he made me feel warm, I guess. It's like...meeting someone and no matter how much time you get, it still doesn't feel like enough, you know?"
Well, Reynardine had certainly never felt that spark he was speaking of. It sounded nice, but completely foreign. "Hm," she said thoughtfully. "How often are you able to see him? Does he come out here or do you guys meet in the middle?" Logistically, how would a cross-clan relationship even work? The Loch had operated so differently from the League, and it all felt new to her still.

He shrugged, feeling the giddy way his heart beat faster whenever he thought of him. "He comes over sometimes, I go over to his at times. It's nice actually, SummerClan? I have to make sure I don't smell like a city cat when I go though, pretty sure they've noticed at this point, but we still go to the city a bit, more than staying in the forest. It's not exactly romantic when it's dark all over, you know?"
He gave her a sly grin. "So what are you looking for in a romantic partner?" he looked like he was scheming already, "maybe I should set you up on a blind date."
"Uh, a full set of teeth and a beating heart?" Reynardine said awkwardly, before laughing and turning her head to the side. "Honestly, I don't know. I like to get to know all sorts of cats, but I have zero clue who I'd like... like that, you know? It's never come quickly or naturally before." Though to be fair, her friends back at the Loch had been her family, and she had no deep friendships here.
"You can certainly try a blind date. I'd go on one, for your sake at least," Rey said, waving her tail. "Might be fun."

He laughed out loud. "Have you ever been interested in any other cat?" he blinked, "even just a crush when you were younger? Or...well, are there any cats around that you've found attractive at all? Come on Rey, there's gotta be more than just that. Do you like cats that are shy? Talkative? Give me more information so I can actually set this date up."
"I've never... had a crush, really." Reynardine said, whiskers twitching as she smiled. "I grew up mostly around family. Even here... some cats are nice, but the ones I'm closest to are you, a gay man, and my mother. Everyone else is just an acquaintance and I don't really feel any attraction to anyone I don't know."
Since she didn't have a concrete answer, she'd have to go off the abstract. "I think I'd like someone who isn't too arrogant. Not shy though. Somewhere... in between? Just down to earth, like you and me. I'm not terribly picky about looks."

He laughed. "I'm flattered, really," he grinned, giving her a cheeky wink, before shaking his head. Of course, he had felt the same. It had taken him a while to get into the thick of it back in the day, but Hywel wasn't the type to give up. "Okay okay," he chuckled, "I'll definitely be on the lookout for that. Toms only, or both?"
At the wink, she nudged his shoulder, laughing lightly. "Both is fine," Reynardine said. "I've never felt an aversion or an attraction to either, so I might as well cover all my bases."
At the sound of her mother in the other room, she cleared her throat. "I should probably get back to training," she admitted, looking a bit sheepish. "But I'm glad we could talk. You're one of the first cats in the League I feel comfortable calling a friend." Not a best friend, but certainly better than most of these cats.

He laughed. "That's good to know," he gave her a cheeky grin, "I'll definitely find you a nice girl or boy to date. I'd set you up with my sister but I'm pretty sure she'd try to kill the two of us first."
He nodded as she glanced back at the other room. "Is there anything I can help you with?" he offered. He had taken up plenty of her time, he might as well try and help her get back some of it. "It's pretty nice talking to you too," he admitted, "not a lot of people understand our...plight, I guess."
Reynardine grinned. "And hopefully I don't scare my potential suitor away."
The offer of help was a nice one, and she smiled gratefully at him. "You could go and collect some moss for me whenever you get a break. I wouldn't send you after herbs, since I can barely identify them myself. But moss would be good, if you can spare the time."
