Darksonata had been aware of a young cad padding after him ever since the ceremonies, though he wasn't sure why they seemed so determined to follow him. It was rather annoying if he was being honest, especially for a cat who was used to being out of the lime light. He was content to stay in the shadows, but now the furball kept on showing up at the most inopportune times, like now.
He had been stalking a rabbit, and just as he was about to leap the annoying apprentice made a sound that alerted it to his presence. Instead of chasing the rabbit, he raced up with the apprentice with a cross look on his face "What?" it was a simplified version of what he really wanted to ask, but he wasn't used to speaking to anyone but his sister ѕнαdow✩
Silverpaw took an aborted step back, successfully intimidated. “Um- I- Well- Little- She- And- You-“
He stopped, swallowing, and his ears started to flatten against his head, cowed. He dipped his head. Before he could apologize, though, it was as though he was... possessed, by something or someone. Something far different than he was used to, a type of intoxicating rage that started from the deepest parts of his heart and rose.
He looked into Darksonata’s eyes with his own hard aquamarine gems. “Littlestar gave us the responsibility of selecting our mentors. I had thought you were a brave, successful, respectable, and proud enough warrior to have taken on the position without pouting and slinking away like a coward. Perhaps I was wrong?”

Darksonata looked at the frightened apprentice, as they stepped backwards stuttering at being confronted. Only the pure panic didn't last long, as the young cat pulled himself together long enough to actually answer his question with a coherent response. There was no anger on his face, only silence as Darksonata stared at the young cat's face after they had finished speaking. It was uncomfortable, his hard stare enough to make even the most experienced cats quake.
"That it?" he finally replied, turning away from the apprentice. His tail flicking the at on the shoulder as he began walking away. Neither encouraging nor discouraging the apprentice to come along. The apprentice had managed to hold their ground. Now would they pursue what they wanted?
Silverpaw floundered, half convinced the flick of the tom’s tail on his shoulder had actually been a killing blow and he was now trapped between the living and the dead. An itch on his forehead was confirmation enough of his existence, though, so he glanced behind himself, then forward after Darksonata. What now? How was he supposed to react to something like that? Swallowing, he continued to stare after him. If he kept going after a possibly useless path, wasting time that was precious for training, would he be rewarded for his determination or ridiculed for not being able to recognize a dead end when he saw one?
Doubt started to swirl in his mind. Maybe Darksonata wasn’t the brilliant warrior he’d thought him to be. Maybe that’s why he refused to outright accept him as an apprentice. He had never before heard of a warrior being insecure about their teaching prowess and whether they had the right stuff to ensure another clanmate’s survival, but... Surely it must be a thing. After all, if it was able to be thought of, it must exist.
The silver tom squared his shoulders. If Darksonata was insecure about training him, there was only one way to settle it: He would have to prove to the warrior that he was a great teacher, if a little unconventional. They’d have to get over the caveman behavior and he’d have to teach his own mentor how to use proper sentences instead of assuming one word answers meant soliloquies, but he had faith.
Silverpaw rolled his shoulders and padded after the tom.

It was time to see just what this apprentice was capable of.
One moment he was walking ahead, and the next it was almost as if he had disappeared. His long black pelt was no where to be seen, leaving the apprentice wondering where the warrior had gone. Knowing this area like the back of your paw had it's advantages after all. Having taken a tunnel hidden rather effectively under some brush, Darksonata continued on his journey to his favorite place. With a head start it wouldn't be a matter of catching him, but tracking his scent. He wove through the maze of tunnels until he arrived at the boneyard. Leaping up gracefully onto it's spine and strolling up, until he laid upon the creature's head.
One minute Darksonata was broodingly padding ahead of him, the next he was gone, as thought swept away by the breeze. Silverpaw froze, eyes widening a fraction, and turned in a circle, a familiar desperation — that of a kit having lost sight of his mother in an unfamiliar place — began to claw at his heart. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply, only to clear his mind and calm his rapidly beating heart, until he remembered: even in the dark, one could find their companion. There was a reason cats were given the sense of scent.
But... He’d never done it before. He’d never done anything before. Where kits had grown up playing pretend with one another and learning what they could from the apprentices, he’d been a loner, an outcast. Now he was being thrust into the thick of it, made to understand a technique he had no prior comprehension of.
It couldn’t be any different than when he found his mother through her scent. Everyone had their own unique trail, even Darksonata. But what was his scent?
Silverpaw shut his eyes tight, willing himself to focus over the roaring in his ears. If he remembered correctly... this tom, this wraith, was like an embodiment of tea leaves, smoke, and the barest hint of mint. It was an odd combination that one could find overbearing, but was faint enough that it instead had a sense of calm to it... if not for the tom’s personality or lack thereof.
Aquamarine eyes blinked open and narrowed. Alright, one step at a time.

The black tom had settled in and was quite comfortable on his perch. His long fluffy tail curled around his body, his eyes closing. Even though he seemed satiated and calm, his ears were perked forward listening for sounds of the approaching apprentice. There was only one way through that tunnel to end up here, and it made detecting the young cat's emergence so easy he could do it with his eyes closed.
He had been doing a pretty great job in navigating to the best of his ability despite the darkness that surrounded him. One can learn many things when thrust into the fray, and one thing Silverpaw learned was that his night sight was either damaged or simply not as great as others. By the time he found light, he was prepared to launch himself out of the pit and back into the day, which was exactly what he did–
And resulted in him slamming into the back of Darksonata. The apprentice fell back on his haunches and groaned, lifting a paw to rub at his head. "Ow."

Darksonata looked down at the young apprentice, silently shaking his head before taking a step back and motioning for the young cat to follow him. He leapt up onto the bone structure. This would be his second test. Did he have the balance and stamina to keep up?
