Equally surprised by the strange cat's appearance, Fisherpounce nearly ran into Sunpetal but he was able to leap to the right to avoid hitting her. "This is SummerClan territory!" he hissed after recovering his footing. "You're trespassing!" This is the first time he had ever truly confronted an enemy cat, even after all the border patrols he had been on so he felt a little nervous.
"This is my territory!" the black tom hissed. He had smelled the border markers when he came here two days ago and figured he might be confronted by some other cats. But this ground was too good to give up without a fight. "Last warning. Go away or else!" He slashed his claws toward Sunpetal nicking one of her ears.
Searing pain - probably the first time she'd ever been exposed to real pain and true danger - flared through her nerves, a thin trail of blood pooling into her golden fur. As he swung his claws at her a second time, Sunpetal had gathered her wits enough to scramble out of the way. She positioned herself slightly behind Fisherpoucne, her sapphire gaze wild and the sudden reality of this situation making her heart pound in her chest. She was all talk a few minutes ago but this? This was real. She wasn't confident enough in her budding skills to be comfortable trying to maneuver battle strategies when it actually mattered, so she echoed her friend's sentiment, "You can't be here! If you leave now, we won't tell anyone you were here and you'll have time to get away before a patrol finds you!"

"I'm not leaving now that I've found this good place," the black tom sneered. "If you want me to leave, you're going to have to make me." He eyed the pair warily as he lashed his tail wildly.
"There's two of us and only one of you," Fisherpounce replied as he took a protective stance between Sunpetal and the tom.
"Don't let that stop you, mouse-heart," the black tom hissed. Then unexpectedly he launched himself upon Fisherpounce and the two rolled around on the ground in a snarling mess of claws and teeth. The rogue figured if he could take out the tom, then the she-cat would be easier to scare away.
Fisherpounce fought hard as he tried to remember all he had learned about battling. Sometimes he found himself on top of the rogue but soon the positions would reverse and he was battling on his back. The third time he was on his back, he was able to use his hind legs and launch the rogue into the air. The black tom twisted and landed neatly on his feet facing Sunpetal. "NO!" he growled as he watched the rogue initiate another attack against his friend.
Watching Fisherpounce and the rogue fight, her confidence was peaking, rallied by her friend's bravery. That confidence proved to be thin, shattered just as soon as the intruder was facing her again, but this time she knew she could only rely on herself. "Get away," she snarled, ducking her head to avoid her other ear suffering the same fate as the first.
Sunpetal's strikes were uncoordinated and sloppy, but she kept them coming, swinging and lashing and clawing in some vicious dance that allowed her to gain ground on her foe, if only because she didn't give him an opportunity to retaliate. Something seemed to switch in her after a moment because she crouched, suddenly still, and then sprang at the tom, pushing him backwards into a briar patch he hadn't noticed she'd been guiding him closer to.

"RAY-OW!" the black tom hissed in anger and pain as he felt the thorns digging into his fur and flesh. He didn't count on these cats being so tough, especially the she-cat.
By now, Fisherpounce was standing next to Sunpetal with his fangs bared. "Go away and don't come back!" he hissed as he took a step towards the rogue.
The black tom tried to disengage himself from the briars in a dignified manner but failed miserably. "You can have this stinking piece of ground," he spat. "I'll go find a nicer place and I better not see you around there!" He turned with a huff and stalked off, away from their territory.
"Look at his butt!" Fisherpounce laughed. "It's full of thorns! I'll bet he won't be able to sit for a week! Good thinking pushing him into those briars. You didn't do too bad with your fighting. You sure you don't want to change and become a warrior?"
"Yeah, haha... Ha... Ha..." Sunpetal emitted a feeble laugh before she collapsed to the ground, her paws trembling. She had never experienced battle before other than her training sessions with Fisherpounce and Weevilspike, and now that the adrenaline was beginning to wear off, she felt her nerves buzzing erratically.

Fisherpounce looked at Sunpetal in alarm. "Did he hurt you bad?" What was I thinking? His heart sank as he tried to see what injuries she sustained in the fight. I'm responsible for leading her into this danger. I should've known better! "Where are you hurt?" His eyes were as round as twin moons.
"N-no, I'm not hurt." Was she? She wasn't sure, other than by the sting in her ear that was becoming more pronounced. Most of the blood had dried by now, but the wound itself was still raw and inflamed. "That was just... a lot," she admitted. Sunpetal took a few breaths to ground herself, focusing on the scents around them and feel of the breeze winding into her fur, before she tried to speak again, this time her voice more steady. "That was so crazy! We could have died, yeah? But we didn't, an- and we protected SummerClan!"

Relieved Sunpetal wasn't hurt badly, Fisherpounce let out a sigh of relief. "I really doubt our lives were ever in danger from that mange-pelt but you're right about one thing, we did protect SummerClan." He noticed a few areas stinging him and inspected his own pelt. There was one long scratch on his chest and another on his left flank. Then with his head bobbing up and down, he began to wash the larger wound on his chest. Pausing, he asked, "You still want to go to the shore?"
She wasn't convinced that they were totally out of death's reach but Sunpetal didn't say any more on it. "No, we can go another time. You should let me or Birdie look at that wound of yours," she mentioned, concerned gaze traveling to the gash he was cleaning. Every lick swiped away a scarlet stream but it was replenished in the breaths in between.

"It's not that bad," he said more hopefully than really knowing. But he moved in closer for Sunpetal to inspect it. "So, are you wanting to become Vulturemalice's apprentice now?" He noticed she had been hanging around the medicine den a bit more often but he figured she was just helping to keep his herb stores stocked. Maybe she did really want to become the first leader-medicine cat
Sunpetal shrugged. "Someone has to help him since he doesn't have one," she mumbled thoughtfully, rummaging in the brush for something she could use to dab away the blood from her friend's chest. "All the apprentices are kind of scared of him, but he's good and sweet and funny even if he comes off abrasive at first. He's part of my family now, you know? And all this healing business is easy when you spend your whole life which plants do what and which ones are better for weaving than stitching." She explained it as she rooted around for other herbs, returning with marigold and dry oak leaves that she promptly chewed into a salve and then applied to Fisherpounce's wound. "This will stop you from getting an infection, but you should check it often."

The herb mixture stung a bit when she placed it on his scratch and it had a funny smell but he didn't complain about it. "Thanks," he meowed. He had been joking about her becoming an apprentice again. He couldn't imagine that ever happening. "Sure, I will. You really know a lot about herbs and stuff. Do you think you'll be the head Garden-Keeper someday?" He thought about his own career path. One day perhaps he'd be chosen to join the Red Guard. "Let's get back."
"Being Head Garden Keeper means my Momma wouldn't be anymore," she reminded him, though she did long for the day she held a title of some esteem. Ratstar was, well, Ratstar and Poppymask was the clan's queen, simultaneously known for her skill and knowledge as a Garden Keeper and her tenure in the nursery; Sunpetal's worst nightmare was to never have a similar title as those.
She led their way back to camp, glancing nervously at every shadow as if a rogue would spring upon them again. She only relaxed once camp was in sight. "If we don't have another eventful day like this one, it'll be too soon," she remarked behind a slight laugh.

"That's true," he replied. "But someday she might grow tired of the position and step down." He didn't want to think of the other reason that vacancies happened and he wasn't going to mention it.
He was glad when the camp finally came into view. He could use a rest in his comfy nest inside the warriors den. "Even with the danger we faced, I thought it was kind of fun - in an adventure sort of way," Fisherpounce remarked. "I actually got to use the skills I learned in a real battle not just practice ones."
"Sure, if that's what you call fun." Sunpetal's mew was rife with chiding but there was no intensity to it. This warrior-style life was all new to her, but it's what Fisherpounce had trained for their whole lives. She could see the glee behind his exhaustion. "It was exciting," she admitted as they entered the den, flopping down into the nest she had that was sandwiched between Weevilspike and Poppymask's currently vacant one. "In a different way than hunting is. There's no danger in being a Garden Keeper, you know? Maybe for an apprentice who doesn't know the difference between holly and raspberries, but we don't train for this. Do you think that's why all of our leaders have been warriors?"

"Possibly," Fisherpounce mewed. "But then we haven't had the Garden-Keeper position for all that long... wait a minute," he paused as a thought came to him. "Rosethorn was deputy for a short while and she's a Garden-Keeper. But to be truly honest with you, I didn't think she was a good choice because of her nonresistance stance on things. What would happen to us if a warlord type leader ever confronted her? I could just see it now. 'Let's sit down and make daisy chains while we discuss you taking over our clan.'" He also remembered that he and Sunpetal had spied on her while she was deputy thinking she was a traitor. He was relieved she had stepped down on her own and that Crow had replaced her.
