Fisherpaw had been watching Sunpaw follow the scent of the hare. He too had smelled it when she had. A smile had been playing across his muzzle as he looked on waiting to see what would happen.
"That was very good first try," he said. "But catching rabbits is different from catching mice. When you stalk upon a mouse, you have to step so soft that you make no vibrations on the ground. A mouse can feel you coming before it hears you. But it's opposite for hares. With their big ears, they hear you first. And to tell you the truth, I haven't caught a rabbit myself yet although I've tried. They're the fastest ground animal we hunt. Often warriors hunt for them in teams but I haven't learned how to team hunt yet." He spied a pile of boulders sticking up from the ground and remembered hunting for mice there before. "Let's try over there. I know mice live in and around those rocks."
How did he know all this? Sunpaw expelled a sharp breath from her nostrils but followed after Fisherpaw, lifting her nose to scent the air. Sure enough, the aroma of warm mouse blood met her senses, her primal instinct beckoning her to close in. Though after sizing up the boulders and the crevices between them, she felt apprehension bubble up into her stomach. "How do I catch them in there?"

(No worries )
"You have to wait for them to come out," Fisherpaw replied. "I think that's the hardest part of hunting, the waiting." Moving a little to the right to be more downwind, he settled down to watch. It wasn't too long that he found his eyes wandering over to Sunpaw rather than the cracks in the boulders. Concentrate! he mentally chided himself as he turned his attention back to the boulders. His ears pricked at a scrabbling sound then he saw a nose and some whiskers peeking out. With a silent tip of his head, he indicated his find to Sunpaw. Then with a nod, he invited her stalk it.
Waiting was definitely going to be the hardest part of this exercise for Sunpaw, who was notoriously impatient. Even crouched beside Fisherpaw, eyes trained on the boulders for any signs of movement, her paws still fidgeted beneath her and her end of her tail was disturbing the dirt beneath it, and it felt like every nerve in her body was on fire. She was a little disheartened to see Fisherpaw glimpsed their prey first but his nod corrected her, refocusing her attention as she felt her heart start to pound; the pressure was on.
Shifting her paws so they carried her balance evenly and lifting her tail from where it rested, she moved forward. She didn't want to move to fast and risk spooking the mouse back into the safety of the rocks, but she knew not moving fast enough would be just as bad, so, preparing herself, she dropped into a crouch and propelled herself forward, hooking a claws into the creature and delivering a swift, killing blow. Rising up, she didn't move for a while, merely staring at her paws. "I did it," she whispered.

"That was great!" Fisherpaw announced as he came forward. Not only was he happy for Sunpaw, he was also pleased with himself. He was actually teaching someone else how to hunt. "Now you won't starve if get stuck somewhere by yourself. Your pounce was well timed and accurate," which was obvious because she caught the mouse. "You'll just have to work a little more on being completely still as you wait." He didn't say it for fear of discouraging her but he was concerned the mouse would feel the vibrations of her tail twitching on the ground. Apparently it hadn't otherwise it would have scampered to safety.
Sunpaw smiled radiantly as he congratulated her. "You're a good teacher," she returned in a moment of rare seriousness. "Do we have to bring it back to camp now or can we eat it ourselves?" She knew it was expected of them to bring their spoils back before indulging themselves, but, in true Sunpaw fashion, she selfishly didn't want to give up her first catch to an ungrateful kit to devour.
(do you wanna time skip them to warriors soon? c:)

(Sure!)
A moon had come and gone since Fisherpounce was made a warrior. It was a lazy Greenleaf day, the kind that was very warm and dry. Actually it was the kind of day that was custom made for napping and laying around. The young warrior had found a place outside the camp but near to the small stream that flowed close to the camp's entrance. Not having been assigned to any patrols this day, he was enjoying some much needed time off. The gently running water had lulled him to sleep while he was laying in the warm sunlight. But now the sun had moved causing it's rays to be partially blocked by a leafy tree. His redish brown coat was mottled with shade and sunlight. The coolness had awakened him so that now he laid staring at the lazily flowing stream. His thoughts turned back to the time he and Sunpetal had spent the day hunting and training together. A smile grew on his muzzle as he remembered her first catch and how proud she was of it. He wondered if she had hunted since that day. Then suddenly his thoughts were interrupted by a soft rustling sound.
Though they had not spent much time together lately, between Poppymask dropping her young siblings on her at a moment's notice and her curious absence, Sunpetal had certainly been honing the techniques Fisherpounce taught her that day back when they were apprentices; she sought out any available (and mostly willing) mentor. She was by no means a proficient warrior, but clanmates did catch her proudly striding back into camp with that day's kill hung from her lifted jaw, pristine eyes sparkling and demanding to be congratulated on her efforts. This validation became a routine for the clan, knowing they'd have to deal with her dramatics and alligator tears if they didn't live up to expectations, so things had been content lately for the fluffy princess.
Content was SO boring and overrated!
The rustling the young warrior heard would reveal itself as just a leaf prying away from its branch in the wind, but before it could flutter too far, two cinnamon paws slammed down on it, Sunpetal's head lowered so far down it nearly rested on them, and she grinned vibrantly at her friend. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, SOLDIER?" She laughed as his ears folded back, her volume dropping after her successful entrance. "You're getting complacent in your old age, Sir Fisher. Didn't even hear me coming," she tsked.

"Old age?!" Fisherpounce meowed indignantly. "I'm only a few weeks older than you." He tried not to show how startled he was by Sunpetal's explosive entrance. It was true, he had let down his guard so close to the camp but not many enemies ever ventured this close. If he had been by the main stream he would had been more careful. It took an effort to lay his fur down flat again. "And I did hear you coming, I just didn't expect you to be so loud."
Then he continued on by changing the subject intentionally. "I've noticed you bringing in nice catches from time to time. You must still be working on your hunting skills. How's it coming along for you?" Even though she nearly scared the fur off his skin, he was genuinely pleased to see her again.
"Don't they teach you warriors to always expect the unexpected?" Sunpetal teased merrily, plopping her haunches down and giving her immaculate pelt a couple of extra licks, fluffy tail resting on her hind paws. They were a little removed from camp, far enough that the clan's kits weren't a threat to their peace but close enough that the sound of their laughter was still present, tinkling in the background and lilting into the gentle birdsong.
As Fisherpounce mentioned her hunting, her shoulders set back a little straighter. "Oh, you've noticed?" She feigned arrogance, but she was truly pleased that her efforts were being noticed and recognized. She didn't need anyone to tell her how good she was getting, of course; it was just nice to hear. That's what Sunpetal told herself. "I've been hunting a lot," she confirmed, "and I've had a lot of help. You, Papi, Weevilspike, some others. I'll be ready for Papi to crown me SummerClan's first Garden Warrior soon, I think. How's warrior life? Is it as exciting as you imagined?"

Curling his tail around to cover his front paws, Fisherpounce smiled at Sunpetal's teasing. How he missed her being around all the time! He didn't feel as close to any other cat as he did to her.
"Well sometimes it is," he replied. "But most times it's just work. I enjoy hunting - that's exciting but patrolling our borders gets to be a bit boring. Sometimes I wish I can catch cat from another clan trespassing on our territory just to liven things up around here a bit." In reality he was concerned he'd lose his fighting edge if he wasn't in battles that often. "But what's this about 'Garden Warriors'?" He gave her a playful nudge on her shoulder. "I thought you weren't the fighting type, except against sky ants."

She listened to her friend's answer, something within it causing her expression to turn curious. "Why wait for the excitement?" She asked, as if it was the most illogical thing he'd ever said to her. As far as Sunpetal was concerned, she had a knack for keeping herself busy, be that by 'prettifying' the camp, 'warriorizing' herself, or being subjected to babysitting by her parents. "You should go out and find it. Or else you'll ger tired of doing the same old, same old every day," she nodded her head sagely, for a moment looking the image of Ratstar when he was advising someone, her expression softened and still, but she couldn't resist the sidelong, playfully insulting sneer from forming as she added, quite haughtily in that know-it-all manner of hers, "duh."
She snickered. "Really though, I don't want to see you burn out from being too bored. Who's going to be my trusty Knight when I become Queen Sunstar? Cinderpaw? She weighs a pound soaking wet! I'll get assassinated before my leadership even takes off," she enthused, dramatically falling over with a paw crossed over her eyes, lying utterly still until he spoke again, at which point she peeked from behind her paw. "Weeeell, no, I'm not too sure about fighting still, but I want to be the best at both. I want to be," her voice dropped, hushed and reverential, "legendary." She wanted to be Queen Sunstar, known not by her father's legacy but for her own, SummerClan's first Garden Warrior, anointed with StarClan's blessing. She wanted to shine.

Fisherpounce nodded his head as Sunpetal spoke about finding your own excitement. There was something about what she said. Perhaps he should look for it rather than just waiting around for it to come to him. But where? It was just then when she said 'duh'. Smiling, he shook his head and rolled his eyes. So much like the kit he had known.
"I'll always be your trusty knight," he replied sincerely. "I consider you my best friend, I always have." Maybe this was his way of finding some excitement. "So, what do we have to do to make you legendary? I'd like to help. It sounds like it would be a grand adventure."
Something about Fisherpounce's admittance made her feel warm, her cheeks reddening. "I guess you're pretty okay too," she joked as she regained her bearings, standing up and sobering for a moment. "Kidding~ You're my most favoritest friend too. Well, other than Bubbie, but I guess he doesn't count since he's family." Though, now that she thought about it, Fisherpounce was family too; they spent so much time together, her parents included him in their family outings, just like they used to do for Pikepaw before the tom chose to leave SummerClan.
She didn't dwell too long on this thought though, Sunpetal's attention snared by his next question. "Well, by honing my skills, of course! Come on, let's go do some training and maybe we can find some sneaky rogues to beat up."

That really felt so good to hear Sunpetal's admission of friendship to him. Fisherpounce knew it to be true but actually hearing it made it seem more real.
"Alright then," he meowed as he stretched out each hind leg in turn. "Let's check out our border to the southeast. I know that's probably the most likely place we'll find some rogues. I was on a border patrol there last week. We found signs that some cats had been nosing around but we didn't catch any then. Maybe we can catch them in the act this time, besides a trip to the ocean would be kinda fun." He liked going there and feeling the fresh ocean air ruffling his fur.
"Hmm, I suppose that's right," she agreed, albeit trying to herd the disdain out of her voice. One of the very few places to find Sunpetal would be near the ocean, specifically along the shoreline of it, due to how the sand littered her coat and made grooming a terrible, gritty, unpleasant experience! But it was also one of the closest areas to the rogue border, just a hop, skip, and a jump across the Thunderpath and they were practically in the wilds, noticeable by how abruptly the landscape changed from SummerClan's manicured meadows, decorated by flowers and seashells and feathers, to tangled, grabbing overgrowth.
Rather than let Fisherpounce notice her hesitance, she nudged his shoulder and slyly said, "You know, a little birdie once told me about how one Fisherkit once thought one of the rivers was the Southern Sea. Hilarious, isn't it?" Of course, there was something to be said for how Sunpetal still insisted that snow was actually millions of tiny, warmongering ants sent from the sky and she was chosen by StarClan to stop them, but that wasn't important! She bounded ahead of him, out of camp and into the territory, before Fisherpounce would be able to sputter a response, glancing over her shoulder mischievously.

Fisherpounce groaned inwardly and shook his head slowly as he saw Sunpetal streak away. Memories of that long ago day came flooding back. He and some other kits had sneaked out of the camp to go on adventure. Up until that time he hadn't seen any body of water larger than a puddle, so in his kit mind (and the other kits with him as well) thought the first stream they had come upon was the ocean they had heard so much about. That day seemed so long ago now. And truth be told, sometimes he wished for those carefree kit days again but he'd never admit that to any cat.
Soon he caught up to his friend and gave her a playful nip on her tail. "I can see you have been practicing," he meowed. "You're faster than you used to be and you seem to have more endurance too." He was impressed by Sunpetal's progress.
As they neared the border, a pair of eyes watched the two clan cats come rushing toward him. He gave an inward hiss and backed farther under the cover of the small bush he had slept under the past several nights.
She dashed ahead of him, the sound of his voice distant despite how close behind her he ran. Still, his praise instilled her with an even greater determination to do better, her strides widening and her tail streaming behind her. "Yeah? Well, how about a race? Whoever can--" she broke off to clear a branch, springing off it nimbly before glancing back at Fisherpounce, "Whoever gets to the Great Redwood first wins!"
Grown right where the Thunderpath ran through, monsters often had to crawl beneath its root system, but the trunk of the tree made for a safe passage across the path. She had no way of knowing that in racing towards it, she and Fisherpounce were running right into danger.

"You're on!" Fisherpounce replied enthusiastically as he put on a burst of speed. Now they were running neck and neck. He hadn't felt this good for a long time. The feel of the air rushing through his fur and the pounding of his paws in the earth only served to invigorate him.
The stranger saw that the two cats were running straight at him and figured he had been spotted. Even though there were two of them, he didn't want to be chased off this good hunting spot so he decided to hold his ground. He leaped out of his hiding place and landed mere fox-lengths from the speeding pair. Arching his back, the strange black cat hissed, "Go away or suffer the consequences!"
Cheered on by Fisherpounce's enthusiasm, Sunpetal channeled as much of her energy as she could into her feet, flying over the earth. She could hear her friend just a mouse-length away through the adrenalised rush, almost too blinded by the competition to see the shadow leap out in their path, but when she did she slammed her paws down in front of her, bowling herself over and laying dazed at the intruder's paws. His threat snapped her out of it, Sunpetal frozen to the spot. "Y-you should be here," she stammered helplessly.
