The aqua blue sky was a welcome sight for Fisherpaw in the early morning hours. It was just past sun-up and the morning patrols had just left. Last night his mentor told him to practice the battle moves he had learned first thing in the morning, so the rust colored tabby went over to a secluded area inside the camp to practice. There was still some snow piles around but mostly the ground was wet and soft from what had already melted. A vague smile lit his face as he thought about the grand battle that was waged inside the camp by most of the kits - the battle against the sky ants. That happened only two moons ago but now it seemed so far away. He was just a kit then with his head filled with kitten notions. Now he's a warrior apprentice, older and hopefully wiser. He struck out at the remains of a larger pile of snow using a technique he had just learned. Icy pieces of snow burst off and scattered on the ground.
(sorry for the wait, we've been moving to our new place this week!)
"Nicely done, Sir Fisher~"
Mornings weren't her favorite part of the day for sure, but there was some lighter quality to Sunpaw as she strolled out of Ratstar's den. True to form, she was taking her newfound freedom very seriously, which meant anyone in a mile radius of her could expect an earful from SummerClan's self-apoointed warden. The kits quaked in her presence; the warriors ignored her antics; and her denmates groaned at the sound of her approach. That's just how she liked it.
Still, after they were chosen by StarClan to defend SummerClan from the snow ants, which had been a success largely thanks to the two of them, Sunpaw had a soft spot for Fisherpaw. She wouldn't admit it-- especially not to him-- but she saw him as her equal, and he was one of the few to see past her thorny, abrasive exterior. She ambled across to him and shot a smug glare towards the carcasses scattered at his paws. "Looks like we kept SummerClan safe, after all. I haven't seen any more sky ants falling since the war.

"Oh, uh thanks, Queen Sunstar," Fisherpaw replied turning to face her. He was surprised at her sudden appearance. I should've been more aware of my surroundings! he mentally chided himself. If she was an enemy, she could've gotten the upper paw on him. He thought back to one of his first lessons he had with Lostelm. He had told him to always be alert no matter where he was. 'You can never know what danger might be lurking about.' But he soothed his thoughts with the fact was in his own camp at the time.
"Yes," he continued. "We fulfilled our mission successfully. Nothing left of the sky ants except for these dead piles of them. I thought I'd use them to practice the battle moves I've been learning." He flicked off some old snow that was still clinging to a leg. "So how's your training coming along? Haven't been able to talk to you much since we were promoted."
She took a seat beside him and wrapped her fluffy tail around her dainty white paws, listening to his report and observing as he continued to go through his battle moves. Sunpaw almost found herself jealous of the maneuvers. Becoming a garden keeper had been the obvious choice, between her mother's reputation as one of the best and how easily remembering flowers and herbs came to her, but she couldn't shake the ecstasy she felt when she had fought beside her denmates in the war. "StarClan must have been pleased with our success," she noted, trying to shake her thoughts, "We were promoted to apprentices right after! My pappy won't tell me anything, but between you and me I think he received a sign that it was time."
At the mention of training, her tail lashed. "Rosethorn is a..." She debated on what word would best describe her mentor, the clan's deputy, who Sunpaw had a notoriously rocky relationship with. Finally, she settled on, "good mentor, but I don't trust her, Fisherpaw. I think she's evil. Did you know she hates kits?" She had no proof for that claim, but it was the only explanation she could draw from Rosethorn's "snotty nose" comment she'd made all those moons ago, something Sunpaw still held a grudge over.

Fisherpaw nodded his agreement about StarClan being pleased with their efforts in the battle. He felt sure they had done well. Just look around, the sky ants were all slowly dissolving into the ground. And to even think that Ratstar may have received a sign about them made his heart soar! He stopped his practicing and looked at his friend. He didn't believe Sunpaw was really the way others perceived her. He thought that deep down inside her she was nice and concerned about the welfare of others. He guessed the bossy exterior she portrayed was something she felt she needed to hide behind. He wished the rest of the clan could see her the way she was with him.
He was going to say something but Sunpaw continued. And what he heard next shocked him. "Our deputy is evil and hates kits?" he asked in a hushed tone. He looked around to make sure they were alone. He had always seen Rosethorn as a good warrior. "What makes you think that?" Then suddenly a thought struck him causing him to narrow his eyes. "Has she done anything to hurt you?" His voice was a low hiss. He searched her body visually for any recent injuries.
She glowed under his concern, but otherwise Sunpaw's expression was carefully neutral other than the furtive glances she cast around them. "No, no, she hasn't hurt me, but it's just...the vibe I get. I don't think she's who everyone else thinks she is, and I'm worried about my pappy." Even though her information was faulty, there was still a very obvious, genuine concern the she-cat had for her father, who she really believed was being deceived. Besides, anyone who didn't like Sunpaw must have been psychotic in some respect (according to Sunpaw). "Maybe this was what StarClan was preparing us for?"

Fisherpaw's neck fur began to flatten back to normal when he heard Sunpaw tell him she wasn't hurt by Rosethorn but his thoughts were still reeling from her accusations. He could tell just by looking at her she was genuinely concerned for her father. This wasn't something she was making up. His happy, carefree attitude toward life was being challenged. This was a very serious charge against their deputy.
"You could be right," he replied thoughtfully. He had figured their prophecy with StarClan was fulfilled with the end of the war but was it only just the beginning? "But we'll have to make sure we have proof, good solid proof before we tell any cat what we're thinking. The last thing we need is to be kicked out of SummerClan for treason."
Fisherpaw raised a solid point that she hadn't even considered before, and Sunpaw's blue gaze widened fractionally. "You're right! Okay, okay, we'll need a plan but that will take some time to get ready. In the meantime, I want to be prepared." Suddenly, she looked very resolute and decided, and her next question came without hesitation. "Sir Fisher, will you teach me how to fight?" Most garden keeper apprentices were prepared with a basic understanding of how to defend themselves, but being paired up with the deputy left her with little opportunity to learn anything like that, given Rosethorn's pacifistic approach to conflict.

Great relief flooded over Fisherpaw when he heard Sunpaw wasn't planning on doing anything rash concerning Rosethorn. "I would be honored to teach you what I'm learning, Queen Sunstar," he replied with a dip of his head. "And as for your mentor, let's just keep a close eye on her for now, especially if she's around any kits." This suited him just fine. He'd watch the deputy whenever he could. Watching wouldn't get them into any trouble. He already felt his mood lightening.
"Okay, to start I'll show you what I was just practicing. It's called the front paw strike." Fisherpaw sliced downward on the same snow pile he had been attacking. "Strike fast then move out of the way."
She watched the sky ants carcasses scatter as Fisherpaw dealt them a devastating blow, jumping forward eagerly to try it herself. "Okay, I think I got it!" She steadied her paw and examined the snow in front of her, looking for any areas that stood out as a 'weak spot,' which is what she assumed warriors did to actual foes, but when she struck out at it, her paw only grazed the top of the snow. Nevertheless, as commited as she was to her attempt, Sunpaw threw herself to the side, unceremoniously ramming into Fisherpaw where he stood next to her. "Oof! Oh, oops," she laughed, a little winded from the impact. "I forgot you were on that side. How'd I do?"

"Not too bad for a first try," Fisherpaw said laughingly after he regained his footing. He wasn't expecting Sunpaw to jump toward him so she caught him by surprise. "Maybe you can develop that as a new variation and call it the 'front paw sideswipe attack'. It'll be good for when you're outnumbered." He gave her a playful shoulder shove. "This time, try it on me. It might be helpful if you had a real cat to attack instead of a pile of sky ants. Aim for my head but make sure you leave your claws sheathed."
Shaking off her fleeting feeling of embarrassment, she allowed herself to laugh along with him, but Fisherpaw's comment already had the gears turning in Sunpaw's head. "I should do that, but I would totally name it something way prettier like the 'Sun Beam Strike' so everyone knows I created it!" She'd be the talk of the clan if that were the case; a garden keeper-- apprentice, at that!-- who created her own variation of a battle move. She donned a concentrated, resolute expression, now more than ever determined to master everything Fisherpaw imparted to her. "Okay, I'm gonna try again," she said, sizing up her foe before lashing out at the side of his neck with her paw, this time more acutely aware of her surroundings as she dodged to the side.

Fisherpaw smiled at Sunpaw's name for her new battle move. It was so like her to want to take credit for some new, innovative thing. That name reminds me more of elders lazing in a beam of sunlight than an attack, he thought with amusement as he prepared himself for her next attack. This time she surprised him with a well aimed strike. "Good, that was better," he meowed. He was enjoying this role reversal of being a trainer instead of being trained. "Now I'll show you the defense against it. If the attack is coming at your neck or head you can do this." Fisherpaw turned to the left swinging his right front paw across his body to the left. "See? Just like that. If you do it just right, your enemy will completely miss and you'll leave a scratch on their leg they won't forget. Give it a try." He shot his front paw out toward the side of her head.
Her chest puffed out with pride when he congratulated her effort. Being a warrior didn't seem to hard after all! "Okay, move to the side and strike back," she reminded herself, carefully observing Fisherpaw's movements for the first sign of an attack. When his paw lashed out at her, she took a step back and then brought her own leg up to parry his strike. "Like that?" she asked after the fact, a bit more out of breath now that she was exerting more energy in their mock session.

"Hey! That's good," Fisherpaw replied after his paw was knocked away. "This is fun! You know, you're a natural at this. Maybe you should consider changing your training program to be a warrior instead of a Garden Keeper." He could see she was breathing harder now but if she kept up practicing, her strength would increase as well.
"You think so? I never considered being a warrior before really," she told him, looking a little introspective now. All her life, she'd felt like becoming a garden keeper was the obvious and most logical path for her to follow, between Poppymask's reputation and Sunpaw's own dislike for work, but she did really enjoy sparring with Fisherpaw. "You think I could be both? SummerClan's first garden warrior? I'd be the first and you would get extra honors for training me!"

A big smile spread across Fisherpaw's face as he contemplated Sunpaw's suggestion. "A garden warrior! And to think that we came up with the idea!" And the thought he'd receive special honors excited him as well. "Should we tell someone or keep this a secret?" He looked around to make sure they were still alone. If they told they might be made to stop. But if they were to keep training they could prove how valuable this idea really is. Besides, this was way too much fun to stop now.
"No!" It burst out far too quickly. Sunpaw clamped her jaws back shut to recompose herself, glancing around as well to ensure no one was around to steal their very new and unique idea. "No, we should keep practicing and then we can tell my Papi all about it when we're good and ready!" She waved her ginger-accented tail behind her wildly, nudging Fisherpaw toward the camp entrance. "Come on, let's go practice some more! I wanna get real good! And maybe I can teach you some garden keeper stuff."
Post by Whitemuzzle on Apr 7, 2021 18:46:36 GMT -5
"Okay, let's," Fisherpaw agreed. He didn't know what he'd do with garden keeper's information but he supposed it wouldn't hurt to know something about it. "Strength training is something I'm supposed to be working on now too. Lostelm says it's important. Even with lots of battle skills, it's often the cat with the most endurance who wins fights. Would you like to go on my run with me? He says it's the best way to build up strength and endurance."
Though usually Sunpaw would insist that ladies didn't run, she was committed to this plan of theirs-- and anyone who knew Sunpaw knew of her utterly tenacious soul. "Okay, I'll run with you," she agreed readily. "We'll have to take some breaks though, I'm not very good at running." Her form was inherited right from Poppymask and anyone could see that: with the same dense fur and stout physique, they were better suited to garden tending than chasing prey, but the long tangles were a dangerous trap for enemy claws. She smiled as she looked over at her friend, asking, "Where should we run to?"
