Jetfire waited until the other cats had slowly filtered out of the medicine cat den, leaving just her and Ghostcrown alone. She had been wanting to talk with him, but this wasn't the kind of conversation that could be had with others listening in. The weight of knowing about Firetooth's feelings for had been weighing heavily upon her shoulders, the last thing she wanted to do was to hurt Ghostcrown. Even if she knew that a romantic relationship between them wasn't in the cards, the last thing she wanted to do was hurt the tom whom had lost his daughter to save her and her kits. He had been so kind to her, and this felt like she was betraying him and the sacrifices he had made for her. The last time they had spoken, they had agreed that neither of them were ready to be in a relationship, but she had always thought that after the kits were born they would be together "Ghostcrown... there is something that I need to tell you" her words were soft as she tried to figure out how to say them Cleaver
The jet black tom lay beside his friend, his head resting on his paws as he watched the other cats leave. It was strange to be alone with her again. Not that they hadn't spent time with just the two of them, but it was always just a few minutes here and there while other cats were passing through, and usually his brother was only a few steps away. She always had other cats around... not that he minded. Ghostcrown was glad to see she had cats here that cared about her. It made him feel a little less guilty when he spent time away from her and with his family. She had her family now, and he had his, and they had agreed that for the best. That was how things would stay. At least... at least, that was the plan, until she gave birth.
Ghostcrown lifted his head at her words and met her gaze cautiously. He had an inkling of what this conversation was about, though he wasn't sure where it was headed.
"Yes?" He asked softly, his voice catching in his throat. He coughed to clear it, it had been too long since he'd last spoken and tried again. "You can tell me anything, Jetfire."

Jetfire stayed quiet for several moments trying to figure out how to tell him what was dancing on her tongue. She didn't want to hurt him, and had been dreading this moment. Ghostcrown had done so much for her, and she couldn't help but feel like by acknowledging how she felt when she was with Firetooth was like taking everything he had given her and stomping on it. She took in a deep breathe "If only it was that easy..." she looked own at her kits still trying hard to figure out how to say this without sounding like a complete jerk
"I just don't know how to tell you this after everything you have done for me and my kits..." if fGhostcrown hadn't stepped there was no doubt in her mind that she and her kit would be dead "but you told me to be honest with you, I'm just afraid that this is going to hurt you and you have already done so much for me. I owe you so much, and..." her breath hitched for a moment "Ghostcrown... I have feelings for Firetooth... I know he is your brother, and that he is a medicine, cat, and that I shouldn't, but I do... I can't really explain it, and im not even sure what it is that I am feeling, but I can't deny that there is somehing there. When he is by my side I just... I know I'm safe, and he makes me laugh... and" she felt heat rising to her cheeks, as she watched his face for his reaction
Ghostcrown sighed, but he was smiling a little too. For once in his life, he was prepared, and he reached out to rest his paw over hers.
“I know,” he told her gently, “or at least, I had a feeling. I saw during your kitting how he felt about you, I think I knew before he did, and I thought you might feel the same. I’m really happy for you, Jetfire. You deserve to be happy.”

Well that wasn't what she had been expecting... Hurt, anger, sadness, but happiness? At first she doubted his words, but looking upon his face she knew that what he said was true. Despite everything, he was happy for her, but before she could think the words came tumbling out "and so do you" even if she knew that she had feelings for someone else, she didn't want Ghostcrown to be miserable. He had given her and her family so much and she wanted him to be happy to. He had lost his daughter, for a girl who couldn't even return his affections.
He leaned forward and rested his chin on the top of her head, holding her close to him.
“I will be,” he promised her huskily, “I will be.”
He was working on it. He was trying so hard to fix his family and find his own happiness.
Ghostcrown shifted so his forehead rested against hers, sensing this might be the last time they would be so close, reluctant to let go. She was so close and so warm, and nothing that had happened could ever make him regret helping her now.
He leaned back and smiled at her again, his eyes glistening. Why did this feel like a goodbye?

"Me to, even if its not how we expected it" Jetfire smiled a little, even though that smile didn't quite meet her eyes
The tension she had been holding in shoulders seemed to release as she relaxed back into her nest, the stress of holding onto this having been lifted. Ghostcrown being one of the last things standing between giving in and admitting aloud what she already knew in her heart. There was nothing to stop her now from pursuing these emotions that she felt when she was with Firetooth.
Ghostcrown hesitated, then ventured, “I’m glad it happened this way.”
He didn’t want to be cruel. But he needed her to know he was okay with how things played out. He thought a lot about this the last few days, ever since she had given birth.
“I don’t know how I feel about you Jetfire, but I know how Firetooth feels. The way he loves you... I could never get in the way of that. You’ll be happier with him than you would be with me.”
He struggled to find the right words. Did he sound too self-pitying? Ghostcrown didn’t want to upset her, he didn’t want to play the victim, to seem upset that she hasn’t chosen him. He earnestly believed that Firetooth felt a love for her that he couldn’t match.

Jetfire nodded slowly, glad that he understood while at the same time feeling guilt for finding happiness at the cost of his
This conversation hadn't turned out how she thought it would, but she was happy. She had Ghostcrown's blessing to be with his brother, and it seemed like he was on his own path to finding happiness "I won't forget everything you have done for me... " she paused waiting a few moments to collect her thoughts "Even though our paths seem to be diverging, I am glad that we will still be family after all is said and done"
“It’ll be fun to have a sister again,” he agreed with a smile. He had lost so many. “As long as you don’t get in the way of me teasing Firetooth, you’ll always be welcome.”
It had been so long since Ghostcrown had shown his joking side, he realized. Not since SunClan. But now that things were looking up, now that Jetfire was recovering, maybe he would feel relaxed enough again to hassle his brother.

It’ll be fun to have a sister again
Why did those words sound so right? It was like the final piece of the puzzle being put into place. She had struggled for so long on figuring out their relationship, and it explained why mate never quite seemed right even though she cared so deeply for Ghostcrown. She blinked, brother... She liked the sound of that. "I wouldn't dream of it...." she felt her cheeks grow hot.. besides Firetooth was hot when he was angry.
"Good. Good," Ghostcrown repeated. And it was. She was his family, and that was all he needed. They weren't meant to be mates, and he was okay with that, he really was. He needed to focus on his kittens now. He had broken their hearts and betrayed them, and maybe he would never live that down, but he had to try. This was his one and only chance to be a good parent. Helping raise her kits would never be the same; not because he wasn't their true father, but because they would always remind him of his first failure.
He shook off the thought as he stood up and reached back down to touch noses with her. "You should get some sleep, sister," he murmured, "you must be tired."

She slowly nodded in agreement, her head falling on her paws "You should rest to" soon her eyes were closed feeling safe, and happy that the fears she had held onto for so long were quelled. It wasn't long until she was in a deep sleep, his sides rising and falling
