Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Roseshade waited on her challenged, sitting beside of her sister with their fur brushing. She couldn't say that she was surprised exactly, after all her title as the next witch had recently been announced. She was young, beautiful, and now had a high rank within the clan. She probably seemed like an ideal target for this sort of thing, especially for those looking for an easy way to climb up the ranks of WinterClan. However, they would soon learn that she was more than just a pretty face. Her sister had also been challenged, so she would need to deal with this quickly so that she could deal with her challenger as well "State your terms" (What she wants would depend on Robin's attitude)
The small tom watched unperturbed, his blue gaze hovering over the Witch. He had not spoken a single word to the she-cat before he challenged her, he had never interacted with the new member of their clan, and yet he had been the first and only warrior brave enough to offer a competition for her. Undersized, with keen eyes and his chalcedony rank crystal buried beneath feathery fur, he didn't size up as a good fighter against the muscular Roseshade, but he had another plan in mind.
He didn't take his eyes off of her as he replied, "I challenge Roseshade to a contest, and I wager my victory will mean our marriage. Our contest will be about bravery and endurance. There's a sea glass stone at the bottom of Jagged Falls. Find it before I do, and you'll win." The falls were known for their icy life-snatching abilities, too cold for any sane cat to venture into. But Robinring needed to see her courage. He needed to know.

Roseshade shrugged her shoulders, trying to play it off like the challenge hadn't bothered her but she couldn't hide the momentary flash of fear that was so quick it was easy to think one had imagined it. Brindlemist wouldn't have missed it though, nor the subtle signs of her own internal panic despite the calm face on the outside "Mmm, and how do I know that there really is a stone at the bottom of the falls?" she mused, the tip of her tail twitching slightly "Unless you have a reliable witness who watched the stone be placed, I must say it would be all to easy to cheat in such a challenge. Claim that the stone is at the bottom of the falls, only to retrieve it from the shore"
Rowanstrike hated the idea of these challenges and was glad no one wanted to challenge him, but when he'd been selected as witness for this one he'd been angered. The poor she-cat didn't even seem like she knew this tom and he wanted her paw in marriage? Seriously? Living in WinterClan had taken some getting used to, especially from his previous life style of a rogue, but still it was odd to have this festival of challenges and allow such things as fighting for ones paw in marriage. He'd didn't completely agree with the arranged marriages either but wisely kept his mouth shut about those. Hearing what the challenge was though, the tom couldn't hold his voice back. Anger raced through him, only increased by the looks on the two she-cat's faces. Without thinking of anything, especially consequences, the tom surged forward until he was face to face with the other tom. Before this, he'd been content to sit back and watch, let them figure it out themselves as it wasn't his life or his problem, but to ask someone to jump into the Jagged Falls was a suicide mission and he wouldn't stand for that. "I'll take on your challenge!" The large, muscular tom practically hissed the words straight into the face of Robinring.
Robinring allowed a tiny smile of approval to flicker across his face at Roseshade's question. Would he have cheated if he was given the opportunity? An interesting question, and one he was content to leave unanswered. "I understand your concern, however," he began, only to be cut off by Rowanstrike getting in his face.
The warrior couldn't control the irritated microexpressions that swept over him like a cloud, only to be smoothed away as the eerie stillness settled over him once again. His clear blue gaze met the warrior's evenly, moving for the first time away from the Witch. "I appreciate the offer, but my challenge was for the Witch. If you wish to challenge me, you'll have to do it later," he responded evenly, "and set your terms then."
He rose to his paws and side-stepped the warrior to make eye contact with the Witch once more. "We have witnesses that would surely nullify our contest if they believed I was dishonest, I'm even more certain of that now that I've seen their... tendencies." Robinring's gaze slid sideways to Rowanstrike, his emotions masked and unreadable. "Even so, I did not place the stone myself. I persuaded Emberbrand to throw it over the edge of the falls. If you have any doubts, you may speak to him to settle them."

Roseshade blinked "I have no more reason to believe in Emberbrand than I have to believe in you" the witch countered "So unless you can produce another stone to toss into the water I am afraid I will have to decline your challenge on grounds of cheating" she dipped her head to the tom who had stepped in to face her challenger for her "I appreciate you stepping in" she offered him a small smile "and while you can't make your own challenge, perhaps you can be my champion"
“Yet if I produce another stone, you will argue I can find them anywhere and still trick you,” he reasoned softly. “This stone is rare besides, another would not be found easily, but I cannot prove that. I don’t believe you’re craven, Roseshade, and I’m quite disappointed to find you acting so weak.” His eyes pried into her, searching for an explanation. “I find it difficult to accept you would place your fate in the paws of a tom like this, either, if it wasn’t absolutely necessary.”
There was faux disappointment in his eyes; still he attempted to lure her out. There was no reason for him to cheat on this challenge now, not when he could so easily rig another challenge, or choose one he would easily win. She must be more intelligent than that, so there must be something else at play, and he had a guess.

"Demanding a fair challenge isn't being craven Robinwing" she retorted, taking his insults in stride without missing a beat "Nor is it my problem that you are unable to provide proof of the legitimacy of your challenge, when you are the challenger. That is your burden to bare" she tilted her head slightly to the side as he continued on "I will take on your challenge when and if you can show that your challenge is worthy of me taking" To be honest she wasn't even sure if she would be allowed to back out of the challenge, so this way at least she had given him an impossible task to keep it from happening at all. She turned to Rowanstrike next "Though as much as I would enjoy watching the two of you fighting for my hand, it seems I will have take on this challenge myself if he is able to he is able to provide the proof in which I asked for" pao
Despite the frustration his words might convey, his tone was even and his expression remained fairly neutral throughout the whole event. Robinring was patient, and he had a clear handle on himself; this challenge was far from over despite her insistence. It was impossible to prove he wasn't cheating and everyone there knew it, but if he was persuasive enough, the pressure from the crowd would force her to bend to the slim risk and accept his proposal. At the very least, he suspected if she displayed enough cowardice, the clan would demand her forfeit of the challenge indicated her acceptance. If she backed out, she would be forced to become his mate anyway . . . though he was disgusted by the idea as much as she was.
"I will take on your challenge when and if you can show that your challenge is worthy of me taking, she insisted, and now the tom leaned forward, interested. Her refusal was one thing, her irrational excuse that he was a cheater was another, but this was something new. This was the weak point in her argument.
Offering the spectating warrior a single silencing look, Robinring was the next to speak.
"By accusing me of cheating without any evidence at all, you slight my honor, but I have let this pass. It is only natural in a challenge such as this that you want some security, and I am a simple warrior. As I said, I have already taken steps to assure you that this will be an equal fight. First, I was not the one to place the stone: as I said, Emberbrand volunteered to do it for me. He is a respected member of this clan with a pure bloodline, and I would think carefully about questioning his honor, as that would be a grave insult. Furthermore, this stone is quite remarkable: sea glass is difficult to find, so it will be distinctive, and easy for you to recognize even if you have not laid eyes on it before. If the stone is in the pool, one of us will find it; if it isn't, then neither of us will win, and you have nothing to fear. If I attempt to pull the stone from some hidden location instead, rest assured our noble witnesses will end the contest right there and declare you the victor. If they feel the need to send me to prison for such an offense, I would not object.
"I propose that, given the precautions I've already taken to make this a fair contest, it is no longer my obligation to promote this challenge. You have already told us that your concern stems not from my supposed tendency to cheat, but from your own lack of interest. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how 'worthy' you think this contest is of you; the challenge has been made, and if your personal feelings are your only inhibition, you have no standing to back out of it without becoming my mate. If you truly suspect me of dishonesty still, I suggest you procure some evidence to prove my guilt. Without proof, there is simply no argument to be made that I am cheating you."

Roseshade had to hold herself back from just walking off then and there. It was plain to see that the persistent tom was not going to give up quite as easily as she first assumed. None of the other toms even had the nerve to challenge her much less be so insistent "Then it seems we are at an impass. You can provide no proof that you haven't cheated nor have I any proof of your dishonesty" she paused, knowing full well that she was not going to five into his demands
"However the stakes of your challenge are high, and I refuse to participate in such an easily skewed challenge. It would be a shame should we go through with this challenge only to to have to void it later. These challenges are meant to be in good faith in the sight of the Gods, and I will not tarnish these challenges with such folly. If you truly wish to win my paw in marriage, than I suggest you come up with challenge that you won't insult the Gods" she paused, tilting her head "so what shall it be? Are you going to pick a fair challenge, or shall we go to Wintrystar and allow her to decide"
"As I've said," he regarded her calmly, "I've already made this challenge difficult to cheat in, and I have followed every rule of the challenges. I do not pretend to know the will of the gods, but I believe I have made every attempt to placate them." Robinring was slow but unyielding, and even if he had to claim ground inch by inch, a little each day, he would wear her arguments down until she could no longer disguise her baseless excuses.
"Wintrystar told us the challenges can be anything, and that the challenger decides," Robinring continued. "There is no reason for her to change her own rules now. Besides," his eyes cut into her, "would you not accuse me of cheating in any new challenge? If I demand a banal hunting contest instead, you will suspect me of hiding prey before we begin. Will you deny every challenge or only those you don't have an advantage in? Surely that form of cheating spits in the face of the gods and your fellow clanmates more than anything I have proposed. If you do not want to be my mate," he shrugged, "then beat me, and wager I will never speak to you again after."
Rowanstrike was furious at their talk, but he stood back. There was nothing he could do since the point had been made clear that Roseshade would have to take the challenge herself. But what he could do was watch Robinring with close inspection. Or...he could go get Wintrystar. Only problem, its like Robinring says, she wouldn't allow either of them to back out either but maybe with her there things would stay fair. Or Wintrystar could propose a different challenge? One that didn't involve the Jagged Falls before them. Just what should he do? By collecting Wintrystar he brings both of them up for question of refusing the challenge and trying to cheat, but by not getting her, the challenge still goes on as is. But even with getting her, the challenge may still go on and someone could die from being in the Jagged Falls' grasp.

"Then pick another challenge" she replied dryly, not intimidated by the tom's argument in the slightest, instead choosing to meet it head on "Wintrystar stated that you could choose your challenge, but it is well within my right to demand it to be within reason. I care not whom has the advantage, only that it is a fair challenge. You say that this is challenge that is difficult to cheat on, and yet I have already pointed out several ways in which it could be done. Your rebuttals to my arguments are flimsy at best, as you flounder around trying to prove that your challenge is a legitimate one"
The glint in her eyes growing darker, she wouldn't do this challenge of his.
“Your claims of cheating have less substance than my defense,” he answered with ease, not bothering to repeat himself this time. “This challenge is fair. Even if one of us proves to be a stranger swimmer, we don’t know where the stone has fallen; and I trust I am taking a greater risk than you are. You are a healer, you should be able to save your own life, and if you don’t you have another to spare.” The glint in her eyes only inspired a flicker of amusement in his. “Fighting, hunting, healing, these are not equal contests.”
CleaverJadieracer I'm giving you guys two weeks to get this wrapped up. If they're not they'll be officially ended in a draw with no winners, basically as though they never happened.
Wintrystar had come around to inspect the challenges. See what their conclusions were and how things were going. Stopping before the cats here, she spoke up, "tell me, have things been resolved yet?" She wouldn't stay long, but she would check in again and continue to do so until all the challenges were completed.

"Yes Wintrystar it has been resolved" Roseshade dipped her head to the leader and rose to her paws, turning her back on the tom who seemed far to determined to ensure that this went their way "Robinrings challenge will not be occurring, due to suspicion of cheating. If they would like to challenge me again later this evening to something worthy of my status as WinterClan's witch than so be it, but I will not have my reputation tarnished by such a disrespectful deceitful challenge" and with that she began to pad away not waiting or giving Robinring a chance to retort
Robingring watched her go through narrow eyes, his expression giving nothing away. When he looked back at the leader, he let a hint of frustration into his gaze.
"You're a busy cat, Wintrystar, and I should not waste your time," he began. "But Roseshade has chosen to insult my honor, and I would like the chance to defend it. Her suspicions are unfounded and without evidence; I respect her caution, but I have taken several precautions to assure her my contest is fair, as Rowanstrike can confirm. I have followed every rule you put in place." He didn't look toward the warrior once, he trusting he would behave himself. Rowanstrike may not like the challenge he had chosen, but he couldn't deny Robinring had made it as fair as possible and was speaking truthfully.
Gently, he added, "I am sure she did not intend to disrespect you by so blatantly flaunting your rules, but her baseless refusal to participate in the challenge puts us in a difficult position. What do you propose we do, Wintrystar?" They couldn't let her back out of the challenge with a consequence or at least a valid reason; then she was not only showing how little she cared for their leadership, but she was spitting in the face of the gods themselves.
Wintrystar narrowed her eyes, searching between each cat, "And what is this challenge?" She'd make her decision once she understood what was the challenge to be done. And if she saw it fit, then she'd allow it, but no cat could back out of the challenges. Not even the clan's Witch.
