"Oh, I think I see," Graythorn meowed. He never saw this before in SummerClan but he had heard another medicine cat talking one time about an apprentice who refused to hunt in their clan. In fact it was the main reason that medicine cat chose the apprentice to be an MCA. Trying to make Sunpaw feel more at ease, Graythorn smiled at her. "Well, I'll tell you what," he began. "Since you feel that way I won't make you hunt. The other reason I wanted to teach you that skill was if for some reason you were away from camp and all alone, you'd know how to catch your own meal. And from what I just witnessed, I believe you can if you really wanted to." Actually for him it would be one less thing he'd have to teach her and that would make it easier for him. "How do you feel about fighting? It's another skill medicine cat apprentices learn too." He wondered if she didn't want to hunt she might not want to fight either. "But I'm not talking about going into battles. Medicine cats don't do that. What I mean is learning how to defend yourself."

She rubbed the remaining tears from her eyes, fiddling with her paws nervously. She smiled back, a small, cracked laugh escaping alongside it. She nodded in understanding, "M'sorry, Graythorn." She murmured, "But thank you." She felt a bit lighter knowing she wouldn't have to hunt.
"Fighting?" She repeated softly. She didn't agree with fighting, but she didn't want to disappoint anymore. "I can--I can try it?" She said uncertainly. "I probably won't do much good, though. . ."

"If your life is at stake, I'm sure you'll do well," Graythorn meowed. "Medicine cats only fight if their lives or someone else's is at risk. If the enemy is another cat, trying to talk things out is the first line of defense. But if you're facing a fox or a dog or maybe even a badger, that of course isn't an option. That's where you'll need to know how to defend yourself." He turned to show Sunpaw a scar down the right side of his back leg. "I got this scar while out gathering herbs with my mentor. A fox attacked us in the herb meadow and Dreamchaser was able to drive it off but not before it did this to me."
She tilted her head slightly, “I guess,” Sunpaw said quietly, as if contemplating if she would ever need this knowledge. “I understand, I just hope it never comes to that.” She huffed almost silently, eyeing the scar as Graythorn showed her. “That looks like it hurt,” she stared a few seconds longer. The most painful thing she had ever experienced was tripping and hurting her ankle, or getting a bee sting. She didn’t want to imagine having to face a fox.
”I’ll try my best to do this, Graythorn. I promise.” She beamed brighter now, more determined and hopeful than before.

"I know you will," Graythorn replied. "But that'll be a lesson for another day." He buried the mouse he caught so he could retrieve it on their way back. "The meadow's not far from here. I'm anxious to see how much the herbs are growing. It won't be long now when the warmer weather will be here to stay." He felt less grumpy than usual. Perhaps it's the prospect of Newleaf's coming. He decided to quiz Sunpaw as they walked. "So tell me what you'd do if a warrior comes to you with a small cut on their leg."
She kept her eyes off the prey, deciding instead to jump ahead of Graythorn as they walked. She was honestly glad to have to wait for battle training. Maybe she should ask another apprentice to help her get a head start.
As they walked, Sunpaw stopped at every possible interesting thing just to gawk at it, studying it intensely for a few moments before moving on and repeating the cycle. She thought for a moment about Graythorn’s question. “First I would. . . See if it’s infected, and see how bad it is,” she said, uncertainly, “than I would. . . uhm, put marigold on it?” She tried, seeing a faint mist of light orange. Though, she was glad to say, it was mixed with bits of purple as well.

"Actually after you inspect it, you should have them clean it first, or clean it yourself especially if it's hard to reach for the warrior, before you apply any marigold," Graythorn meowed. "Keeping cuts clean is very important. It helps to keep them from becoming infected." He had been watching Sunpaw as they walked and liked how she seemed inquisitive about nature. That was a good sign of an active mind. "And if it was infected, what would you do?"
“Oooh,” she said, slowing to walk beside Graythorn as he talked. Light purple coated her mind, mixing into a darker colour at her mentor’s voice. She watched it swirl in her vision for a few seconds. “I get it,” she repeated the information in her mind. “Well,” she tilted her head slightly, “I would clean it, of course, dress it, and wrap it. It would be best for the cat to stay close, right? So I can keep it clean.” She was rather hesitant, still, to give her answers, fearing they would be wrong. But getting things wrong was a part of learning, she reassured herself.

"Yes, that's right," Graythorn responded. "Also burdock root, chervil leaves, and horse tail can be used for infections." A cheerful bird sounded it's song high over their heads as they walked making the atmosphere a pleasant one. The gray tabby tom glanced upward briefly toward the source of the song then back at Sunpaw. "So, which one of those three I listed is best for rat bites?"
She nodded in understanding, caught off guard by the sudden bird. Her ears perked up, her vision immediately swimming with blue. A perfect, beautiful blue. She hummed along, glancing where the creature had flown off. "I wonder what it's singing in bird language?" She said, quickly returning to her humming. The song made her forget her worries, drowned her in a sea of happiness. But the good kind of drowning, one that made her paws light and her fur swirl. She didn't answer his question for a few minutes, nearly completely forgetting about it.
"Oh!" She thought for a moment, "Uhm, I'm not sure?" She didn't want to just guess, that might show that she didn't care. And she truly did; she cared very much.

Graythorn was irritated at first by Sunpaw's lack of concentration but he held his tongue. He didn't want to chase off yet another apprentice. Was she apprentice number four... or was it now five? He gave his shoulders an involuntary shrug as he walked. It didn't really matter now. He was determined to make her the last one, his permanent one. And wasn't he getting better at controlling his rough tongue? He smiled. Two seasons ago he would have bit off the head of a daydreaming apprentice. In fact he did. That's why he had so many previous apprentices. No one wanted to be trained by a surly mentor.
"Well to be honest I don't remember if I told you yet," Graythorn meowed. "But the correct answer is burdock root. It's chewed up and applied to the bite and it numbs it to the point that it deadens the pain. But sure you rinse your mouth out well after chewing it. If you don't, your mouth will go numb making it difficult to eat or talk."
