Aspenkit yawned and stretched in her nest, careful not to disturb her brother and sister. She looked to her mothers still sleeping form and blinked slowly, could she call this cat her mother? She had been born to her, but there was never a moment when the queen acted as if she had kits, even now she slept apart from the litter as if the thought of touching them disgusted her. Aspenkit let out a soft sigh and stood up, she didn't like to think about those things though she often did anyway. Her paws began to carry her to the nursery entrance when a low growl sounded from behind her and caused her to freeze.
Morningsnow stirred as Aspenkit began to walk away, she looked up her eyes glazed with sleep and let out a growl as she watched the she-kit leaving. "Where are you going? I didn't say you could leave." The white and ginger queen sat up, careful not to get too close to the two sleeping kits in front of her and held her eyes on Aspenkit as she froze only inches from the entrance.
“She’s old enough,” Littlefawn, the Den Father, interjected from his corner of the nursery, voice quietly authoritative despite his innate shyness; where mothers and kits were concerned, he knew his place and he wasn’t afraid to put his paw down, “she can leave if she wishes.” He’d been dozing uneasy, too anxious with his constant thoughts and uncomfortable in his own skin to properly sleep, and now he set Morningsnow with a warning look from the shadows. He had never approved of the way she treated her kits but he’d rarely stepped in, save for the occasional sweet word to the kits behind their mother’s back; now, he was exhausted enough to be bold to her face.
He rose to his paws to join Aspenkit at the entrance to the den and touched his paw gently to her side. “Go on,” he told her softly, casting a challenging look over his shoulder at her mother. “Have fun.”

Morningsnow let out a deep hiss as Littlefawns voice rang in her ears, how dare he. "They are not your kits, stay out of it!" She sent a glare in his direction and turned back to the kit. "Come here." Her voice was blunt and rage bubbled in her tone as she stood and watched waiting to see if Aspenkit would obey her her listen to the tom and continue on.
Aspenkit hadn't turned around as her mother spoke, too afraid to see the look on her face after being caught. With her ears flattened against her head and her legs now shaking she let out a tiny mew, Littlefawns sudden words caused her to shrink as he berated Morningsnow as she knew his interference would surely cause the queen to lash out at her later. Still she had not moved, the toms light touch to her side sent a shiver through her and she instinctively moved away before looking at him, fear raging through her differently colored eyes as she heard her mothers command to return to her. "I-i-i." She couldn't speak, she couldn't move, the fear that gripped her was too strong.
“No,” agreed the denkeeper, voice cold and calm; he still didn’t deign to turn around, speaking to her over his shoulder — she didn’t deserve the respect of being addressed head-on, “but all kits in the nursery are under my guardianship. I don’t think I need to remind you there are consequences for cruelty towards the youth; I’d hate to see anything come of this simply because you didn’t let your daughter out to play.” He smiled, the look more of a threat than anything he’d said.
He looked down at Aspenkit, heart chilly with sadness at the sight of her terror; he’d been just as frightened of his parents and a good deal of his decision to dedicate himself to the nursery had been the need to prevent any more kits from growing up afraid, and unloved, and unwanted. He raised his eyes back up to Morningsnow; this now felt personal. “Go on,” he urged again, voice gentle; he didn’t take his eyes off the kit’s mother, even as he forced a small, comforting smile for Aspenkit’s sake and took a protective step closer to her. “Nothing bad will happen to you. I promise.”

Morningsnow flattened her ears, it was obvious to most that she had never wanted kits and even more so that she was not the doting mother most were, but she had been raised the same and it made her stronger. She was thankful to her parents for making her this way, and she would not allow her kin to be any different. "They will grow up soft left to be tended to by cats like you." She hissed out the words and took a step closer, her lip curled back showing sharp white teeth.
Aspenkit could hear her mother move closer and for a moment she considered ending this and turning around to obey the she-cat, but Littlefawns words kept her in place. Could he really keep her safe from the harsh queen, was his promise one that could be kept. "I can't move... My p-paws wont work." Her voice was a whisper only Littlefawn could hear, her words unsteady as her legs beneath her. She kept her gaze locked on the tom, there was no way she could speak out against Morningsnow she knew that words would fail her if she tried and as much as she wanted to run as far from here as she could it was as if her paws had frozen like ice to the ground.
Littlefawn tilted his head and forced a sickly sweet smile. “Better soft than cruel,” he growled quietly, the smile fading to ice, and turned back to the kit beside him. “Yes, you can,” he replied gently, nudging Aspenkit softly again with his forepaw and meeting her petrified stare with a small, sombre nod. “One paw in front of the other, sweetling, come on.” When still she didn’t move, he let out a breath and crouched down to her height; in a whisper that only she could hear, he asked, “would you like me to carry you? There’s no shame in it.”

Aspenkit looked down at her paws for a moment, what she really wanted was to have her brother at her side, she angled her ears back in hopes they would have woken up with the commotion but all she heard was the constant deep breathing of sleep. Looking back up at Littlefawn the small she-cat shook her head, she didn't want her mother to see her being carried out. "I'll walk... but you will go with me wont you?" Her voice was quiet.
Morningsnow watched the two of them but remained where she was, her eyes burning. She had never really liked the tom who chose to spend his days in the nursery, and in this moment her dislike for him was only growing. "You have no right to question the way I raise these kits, they are not given luxuries so easily, they must be earned." She had removed the growl from her voice but her tone was still blunt and slightly harsh. She knew the consequences of treating kits cruelly, but in her mind she was not being entirely cruel.
Sorry, I had some computer troubles I'm all set now though!
Frostykit found himself racing to his sister's side when she called out that she couldn't walk. It had taken him a second, because he was trying to process the interaction between the older cats, but as soon as he realized what exactly was going on, his side was pressed against his sisters. "Even if he won't, then I will," he promised. "We can do this together! Like always, even if ma doesn't want us to," he promised, still pressed against her as to prove his support.

Aspenkits eyes grew wide as her brothers white pelt brushed hers, she visibly relaxed a little and looked at him with worry in her eyes. She relied so much on her brother and so when he wasn't there it was as if she were lost, unable to think straight, he was here now though and she would follow him. "Okay Frostykit, together." She half turned her gaze to Morningsnow, slowly, afraid that one look from the queen would burn a hole straight through her.
Morningsnow watched as Frostykit darted to his sister, ignoring the tension that filled the air, tension that was only growing stronger. She knew she couldn't do anything with Littlefawn hovering over her and the kits and so she sat down and watched them as they prepared to leave the nursery, the tom would not always be by there side and that's when she would punish them for disobeying her.
