The warm sun shone down on Ravenmask's dark fur. This is the life! he thought as he contemplated his next move. Hunting alone wasn't his first choice, but it beats sitting around the camp doing nothing. He was standing where the small stream that flowed near the camp met the main stream that divided the territory in half. Across the stream was the rabbit meadow. A vagrant breeze brought with it the odor of the elusive creatures and it set his mouth to water. I think I'll hunt for rabbits, he thought as he turned north toward the stepping stones crossing.
“I’d help,” Doestar called from where he was lounging beside the stream, front paws dangling in the water; he couldn’t catch them, but he liked the feeling of the little fish flitting against his fur, “but rabbits are a little bit too speedy for me these days. I’ll cheer you on instead. Maybe frighten away all the prey in the area, but what’s life without a challenge?”
He smiled and rose to his paws, the fur of his toes wet and collecting dust as he limped over to the Red Guard warrior. “I don’t think we’ve properly spoken, by the way. Which, bit weird! I’m Doestar, your leader.” He let out a laugh, watching Ravenmask with a grin for a moment before looking out over the rabbit meadow. “How quick do you think you could catch one? What’s your record?”

The black and gray tom smiled. "I'm Ravenmask and I'm pleased to finally meet you too." He had wanted to speak to Doestar sooner but the opportunity never arose. Either he was out of the camp hunting or patrolling or Doestar's duties kept him busy and tied up. "To be truthful, I never timed myself hunting rabbits (or anything else for that matter) so I don't know how fast I am. But I can tell you this, I'm faster than the ones I caught!" He laughed a little at his joke before continuing. "But you still being somewhat new to our clan probably don't know many of our hunting techniques. You can, if you want, help me in the hunt. We have a method where one cat acts as a distraction or a flusher while the second cat actually does the catching. If you can get into place quietly then yowl really loud, you can do it. Want to know how?"
Doestar smiled crookedly at the tom, relieved beyond words that there was yet another cat in the Clan whose personality suited his. “Yowl really loud?” he echoed teasingly. “You clearly haven’t heard of the NightClan Apprentice Debacle Of I-Forget-The-Year — I got spooked by an owl and yowled so loud that all the birds abandoned their roosts and didn’t come back for a week. We didn’t eat anything but mice for days and, ha, lemme tell ya, no one wants to eat mice for that long. Not very happy, was my Clan. Wasn’t the most popular apprentice for a while.”
He let out a soft laugh. “Anyway, yes! I can do that. Just call me Sneaky McSneak — those rabbits won’t know what hit ‘em.” He kneaded at the earth and looked around excitedly. Beneath all the half-feigned bubbliness, he was genuinely touched that the warrior was willing to give his leader what amounted to a hunting lesson without looking down on him as lesser-than or strange. For a moment, just a moment, he felt warm, like he truly belonged, and he wanted to cry a little with gratitude. “Tell me where, what and how and I’m good to go. I’m ready. I’m so ready.”

Ravenmask had laughed at Doestar's apprentice story but wondered curiously at his comment about mice. A SummerClan cat could eat mice for days and not grow tired of them. Granted there's other prey in the territory but mice is a main staple of their diet.
He was gad his leader didn't take offense to his offer of showing him how SummerClan hunted for rabbits. He thought about that after he had told him but the words were out and can't be put back in his mouth again. "Okay then," the black and gray warrior said with a smile. "First we got to to find a rabbit. After that we need to position ourselves so that the rabbit is directly between us and be cross wind to it. They have good noses but even better hearing what with their big ears and all. Once we're in position, the flusher - that'll be you - will charge straight toward the rabbit and in line with me. If done correctly, and if the rabbit cooperates, it should run away from you and straight to me."
