The blood was still fresh, creeping its way between the devils toes and painting the ground a sickly sort of brown as it bled into the dirt. Eyes, reminiscent of the unseeing pair belonging to the dead cat at his feet, watched the fleeing auburn tom. Tail lazily waving behind him he gave an empty hum, lips slowly curling in cruel amusement. The tinkling bell like laughter that escaped him was jarring in the silence that hung over them. Joyful in a scene that should only invoke horror. The 5 cats lingering at his back seemed unbothered, one carefully huddled away behind 3 sterner shapes. The outlier a shadow to the brown and white tabby that stood as their figurehead. The ghost ready to whisper in his ear.
“Voltaire, please go fetch the others. I think the little bird got enough of a head start.” His boyish tone, pleasant to the listener, would never be paired with the bloody figure who delivered the words. But that was often Cicero’s strength, unassuming as he was. The cruelty and viciousness wrapped within him were never unraveled to others view until it was much too late.
An angular shape peeled away from the three statues leaving only two to guard the hidden cloud of fur. Heading back the way they had come to rally the troops. Those swayed from long past by Cicero’s honeyed words, or gathered on their journey hear with promises of plentiful food and a time rich in chaos.
“The queen is dead! Long live the queen!” Cicero laughed as he set off, the 4 falling into step behind him.
His shadow scoffing, “and to think she was your daughter.”
“My little immoral blossom.” Cicero hummed in agreement, pitching his tone in anguish, and if his generals and mates didn’t know him so well they might buy the manufactured emotion.
“Her name was Eternalera or Eternalstar, whatever it was she was going by. “ Was the droll retort, sharp blue eyes cutting to Cicero’s shoulder to glare at it.
“The name doesn’t matter, dead as she is now.” Was Cicero’s playful response, eyes twinkling in glee, knowing he was pushing the others buttons; something he delighted in doing. “Now come along my heart, we have a clan to displace. It’ll be fun! We’ll all have a great time I’m sure!”
Cardinalheart had bolted as soon as Eternalstar had fallen. His paws carried him swiftly to the SpringClan camp, his eyes wide with horror. Cardinalheart scrambled to a stop once he was inside SpringClan's camp. Time seemed to stand still for him at the very moment. He wasn't sure what his next move was going to be, but he knew one thing; he was done running. He'd been running and dodging responsibility since Peachblush left but watching Eternalstar fall at the claws of her own father had jolted something awake inside of him, SpringClan was going to need a strong leader and he hoped he was up to the task. He glanced at the nursery where his own three kits lived and he wondered to himself how Cicero could kill his own daughter, he would never harm a single hair on any of his kits.
Fear. It was the next thing he felt, if anything he wanted to make sure his own kits were safe, a selfish thought, but his first thought, nonetheless.
"Eternalstar is dead!" he yowled out, interrupting the peace and quiet of the camp, he needed the warriors to rally now, Cicero was on his way here and he knew there was going to be a fight and they needed to be ready.
"Dead?" Zinfandel repeated dumbly, blinking baby blue eyes as he stared towards the panting deputy. A paw still raised, the words Eternalstar and dead in the same sentence sending him into a stupor. How could Eternalstar be dead, she always seemed unreachable, unwavering and untouchable. "Did you kill her?" Zinfandel asked, thinking that the only way the she-cat could possible be dead is if she let her guard down and someone she trusted betrayed her. But even that thought fled quickly; with the realization that Eternalstar trusted no one. All in all, the former rouge still wondered if perhaps Cardinalheart was going senile, and just being delusional.
Whitepaw had been thoroughly engrossed in his herbs, rare confidence in his quiet mutters listing off names and the ailments they could each cure. Maybe Fawnheart leaving hadn't been such a bad things. Even with Smokecloud to help, her absence had motivated him even further to catch up on the missed training early in his apprenticeship. An ear twitched at the yowling deputy, though for a moment he didn't quite comprehend the words spoken. He registered Eternalstar's name, and so automatically moved to gather up cobwebs in case she was injured. Something surely had to have happened for Cardinalheart to be yelling like that.
Then his head snapped towards the entrance, realization striking in the same moment that he heard Zinfandel's echoed question. Dead? No. No no no. She couldn't be dead. The bobtail shot to his paws, his first instinct forgotten as he bolted from his den. "Where is she?" he asked, mismatched eyes flashing between Cardinalheart and the camp entrance as though he expected the leader to walk into the clearing at any moment. She couldn't really be dead. It was impossible. Whitepaw refused to believe it.
The lynx point rolled his eyes, the tip of his tail giving a flick of annoyance at the response he got. He couldn't be worked up long, though. Too much else to worry about to get caught up on something he was far too familiar with. A familiar, only half teasing thought, 'You're lucky I like you,' rose in the back of his mind, a thought that he soon brushed away with a twitch of his ear. Once again, there were far more important matters at hand.
He cast one last glance back in the direction of the body, expression edged with something almost like disdain, before he focused back on Cicero with a faint grin on his face. "Oh, I'm sure it will be," he purred, eyes shifting towards the guarded fluffball for a moment as he wondered what Cicero's 'baby' would think about what was to happen. Long ago, he might've recoiled at the mention of displacing a group from their home, but he had stopped caring about such trivialities ever since he stopped playing babysitter. Throwing himself willingly into the madness of life at Cicero's side was so much easier than the mental gymnastics he imagined the softer tom was going through right now.
Cardinalheart glanced between Zinfandel and Whitepaw before speaking again, finally catching his breath. "No, I did not kill her." he replied firmly. "Cicero killed her out in the forest, he had several other cats with him, we were outnumbered and there was no way I could get her body back here safely." he responded. "But I have a feeling this isn't the last we will see of Cicero and his group, we need to be prepared to deal with them!" Cardinalheart stated.
Zinfandel opened his jaws to ask who Cicero was before he snapped them shut, processing the words. "Wait.. we're under attack?" He asked slowly, eyes flashing at the words and his eye immediately going towards the nursery, then towards the elders den. His whirled around to duck his head into the warriors den once more, "up up! we're under attack!" He shouted, knowing that would motivate them more than anything else would. Even it the treat wasn't visible yet.
Along the shadows slunk Mongrel, Eternalstar's dog, though the truth of the matter was about to be revealed. That Mongrel had always been under Cicero's control, keeping an eye on Eternalstar for him so when he decided to call in his favor Mongrel would be able to tell him where and how Eternalstar was doing and what she was up to. It was how Cicero had gotten her and Cardinalheart alone. Though his true colors were about to be revealed.
Cicero sighed, a put out noise as he turned a pout towards Caspian. "Your never sweet to me anymore darling." He waved his tail to lightly bat it against Caspian's nose. "All I want is some love and affection and you just give me those looks. Where did my sugar sweet baby go!" His dramatic ramblings painted a rather jaunty tone to their walk. The pace the tom set unhurried and unrushed. The Springclan cats could try and rally some defense but they had no clear leadership other than Cardinalheart, who hadn't stepped up to lead them in moons.
They would be caught flat-footed and unprepared whether he rushed there or took his time as he was now. "Voltaire, be a dear and hang back here with Ambrose won't you. I'll send someone to fetch you once it's all over. But you know how blood upsets him, and we can't have the poor thing becoming distressed on us. Not when today is going to be such a happy occasion!"
Smokecloud had been organizing the herb store while his apprentice practiced when he heard Cardinalheart making a ruckus out in camp. Whitepaw shot up to his paws and rushed out. Annoyed, Smokecloud followed the medicine cat apprentice out of the den. He saw Cardinalheart panting in the middle of camp, his eyes wide. Before he could ask what happened, he heard Zinfandel ask if he had killed Eternalstar. Eternalstar is dead? He thought, his heart sinking. What were they going to do now?
Leopardspot had been snoozing in the warrior den when Zinfandel yowled into the den that they were under attack. The bengal tom shot to his paws, his green eyes wide in alert. "What? Who is attacking? Primal Instinct? Winterclan?" He asked in a panicked voice, pushing passed Zinfandel and rushing out into the camp.
"Yes, and we need to be prepared." Cardinalheart responded to Zinfandel before turning his attention to Leopardspot who had just bolted out of the den. "Neither of them. Cicero and his band of rogues. I have no idea when they'll be here but I know we haven't seen the last of them." he responded. His brain was frantically trying to comprehend watching Eternalstar die and now having to take leadership and prepare the Clan for the upcoming battle that he knew was coming.
Dexter slunk out of the apprentice den and lazily stretched his spotted body. "I don't know who this Cicero is, but sounds like we can take 'em. Its a whole Clan against- what- one or two? Maybe three rogues? We got this." He hummed with a total lack of concern. Either he was stupid or gutsy, or maybe a little mix of both.
"Does that mean there is going to be a battle?" Smokecloud asked, speaking up. He must know so that he can be prepared.
Leopardspot wanted to relax at the thought of neither Winterclan or Primal Instinct were attacking but he felt even worse knowing that they were a bunch of rogues. Rogues didn't have battle techniques. They usually go for the kill.
Lightstep poked her head out of the nursery, keeping her tail wrapped around her children. "then we need to prepare for an attack!" She called to the cats. For Eternalstar, a cat who was so hyper paranoid and working her way into all of the inner workings of SpringClan, for her to be dead meant trouble. "Cardinalheart whichever way they're coming from we should get warriors there to be waiting for them." Lightstep said.
Inksplash was shocked that Eternalstar was actually dead, she glanced towards Mongrel she wondered how he was taking the news. "Mongrel! Eternalstar is dead!" she hissed moving towards him. "You've known her for a long time, do you know anything about Cicero? about what's coming?" She asked him in a hushed voice. Her mother had been very close to Mongrel, and Inksplash had come to trust him. Whether it was wise or not.
Pumpkinking had been taking a nap and snorted lifting his head looking around bewildered by the noise. "What's happening?" He asked with a yawn.
Dovekit cowered behind her mother, Lightstep, and peered out into the camp. "Whats going on?" She asked Lightstep, her eyes widening as she detected everyone's upsetting emotions.
Leopardspot took a step forward, "I'm willing to go face them, Cardinalheart."
"That's a good idea." Cardinalheart said, acknowledging Lightstep's idea before turning his gaze onto Leopardspot. "Thank you for offering. Just take a couple more Clanmates with you. I have no idea how many cats Cicero has under his control so if you are strongly outnumbered come back to camp at once and we will face them here." he instructed Leopardspot before turning his attention to Smokecloud. "Yes, prepare for battle."
________
Wolfspider turned his gaze onto Dexter. "We don't know how many rogues there are, likely more than two or three and when they band together they are dangerous."
__________
"I'll go with Leopardspot." Spottedfox offered, moving to stand nearer to her Clanmates. She wasn't afraid, in fact she was mildly amused with this whole scenario and interested to see how this whole thing would unfold.
Leopardspot dipped his head to Cardinalheart, "Yes, Cardinalheart." Then he turned his attention to his clanmates that had volunteered to go along. "Thank you." It was nice to see that his clanmates had his back.
Smokecloud sighed when Cardinalheart told him to prepare for battle. This was not going to end well and he knew it. "Okay Whitepaw, this is your chance to show your potential. This will be your first battle and we must prepare. Follow me" He told his apprentice as he headed for the den, pulling pawfuls of herbs out of the store that he had just organized. Though, he didn't seem upset to be messing up his work. "We will need wraps, cobwebs, Burdock Leaves, Gumweed, and Comfrey Root" He mewed, pulling out the herbs as he went through them. Then he tossed the Burdock Leaves and Comfrey Root to Whitepaw. "Here, chew these up and then wrap them in a leaf bundle. It saves us time to have them already chewed up into a poultice before a battle. Leave the Gumweed for later. Gumweed is to help seal the wounds so it is very sticky. We don't want to chew it now and allow it to collect dirt that could potentially cause infection to the wound."
Mongrel turned to Inksplash and tilted his head, some part of him still ached for the kindness that Softpelt had shown him. The forgiveness she had given to him even when he had essentially helped Eternalstar drive her from her home. It was this residual, perhaps love, that had him leaning close to Inksplash. "I suggest you might run Inksplash. Your mother already lost her home, she doesn't need to loose her children to."
"Knock knock!" Cicero called in greeting as he brought his rouges within range of Springclan's camp, slipping into its confines with nary a problem. The springclan cats still so disorganized and confused on what sort of threat they were facing that they left the way to camp completetly open. "Little bird! I thought we were having a grand old time, you, my daughter, and I. Then you just ran off. It's really hurt my feelings you know." He hummed, white toes painted red by the blood already shed and head cocked to the side as he gave Cardinalheart a soft smile.
He would almost be cute if he didn't look homicidal. Shadowed by the rouges behind him who's eyes glinted at the promise of chaos. But they would wait for Cicero's signal. As they always did.
Leopardspot bristled, "your not welcomed here." The spotted tom snarled at the rogue leader, his gaze flashing with hostility.
Jasper was among the band of rogues, his eyes narrowed as he scanned the Springclan cats. This might actually be fun if he was a true rogue at heart; watching Springclan fall and scatter like little ants. However, he had a kinder heart on the inside. He only chose to follow Cicero and do his bidding for the thought of this being a better life. How wrong he was. Though he had felt he couldnt escape from these wicked cats for the fear that Cicero may come after him for betrayal. Whether the evil tom would or not, he didn't know for sure but he didnt want to take the chance.
Cardinalheart spun to face Cicero, his auburn fur bristling and his claws unsheathed. They had no choice but to face Cicero and his band of rogues now, here in camp and he hoped they were ready. He refused to wait and see what Cicero's next move was. "SpringClan, attack!" he yowled as he lunged for Cicero, claws outstretched. He barreled into the tom and sunk his claws into his skin. He hoped for the sake of SpringClan he'd just made the right call, but what other call was there to make?
_____
Wolfspider darted towards the nursery once Cardinalheart called out the order to attack. Rogues had no code which meant they weren't above harming kits and queens, the nursery was going to need to be defended. He stood blocking the entrance, his eyes darting back and forth, daring a rogue to approach.
_______
Spottedfox's eyes glinted with excitement, finally a real battle! Without a moments hesitation she leaped into the fight launching herself into the first rogue she saw.
Leopardspot launched at Jasper, tussling with the tom.
Finchpaw looked at her mentor. She wasnt sure what to do. Should she fight? Or should she help protect the nursery?
Smokecloud heard the fight begin as battle cries split the air. "Oh no...quickly, Whitepaw! Chew those up into poultices, I will guard the den along with keeping an eye on anyone who is hurt. These rogues could come in and destroy all of our herbs."
Dexter almost shrunk when he watched the group of rogues begin to make havoc in his adopted home. While he didn't want to be scared, he couldn't help but shiver as he watched them slowly begin to take down their numbers. He tried to puff out his chest but ended up looking completely miserable. Why was he so scared?
Inksplash had been horrified when Mongrel told her to run... but then she saw the rogues.
There was no way they could fight them off, especially if Mongrel was telling her to run. She had been debating it. She'd lost her father and brother in this clan, and now her mother had left as well. She could plainly tell this could be SpringClan's destruction.
But Inksplash would not abandon her home without ensuring the safety of others.
Immediately as other SpringClan cats bristled and moved to join Cardinalheart to face Cicero, Inksplash drew to the shadows and hurried towards the nursery.
"Lightstep!" She whispered, startling the gray tabby queen. "Those rogues look really dangerous, we should get you and your kits to safety."
Lightstep bristled, about to spit a biting retort. She was so sick of not fighting. Cardinalheart not fighting for his true position as leader, and now her having to not fight to protect her home and family?
But she could see the logic in Inksplash's statement. These were rogues, they likely would not hesitate to harm her children. So immediately she picked up Cardinalkit and set him on her back the ginger tom kit shaking, having been unnerved seeing his father act frightened. Then Lightstep bent down to pick up Dovekit. "Take Shiningkit." She hissed to Inksplash. Lightstep's mind racing of places they could go to with her kits. Perhaps if she let Inksplash stash them somewhere safe and away they could return to fight off these rogues.
Pumpkinking stepped up to join Cardinalheart the ginger tom tensed.
